Out of the ashes of Imperial China arose two new contenders to lead a reformed nation; the Chinese Nationalist Party, the Kuomintang, and the Chinese Communist Party. In 1927, the inevitable clash between these two political parties led to a bitter civil war that would last for 23 years, through World War II and into the Cold War period. The brutal struggle finally concluded when Communist forces captured Nanjing, capital of the Nationalist Republic of China, irrevocably altering the course of China’s future. Dr Michael Lynch sheds light on this cruel civil war that ultimately led to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

Communism - Books - Charles Bettelheim - Cultural Revolution and Indus...anges in Management and the Division of Labor 1975.jpg

It is Charles Bettelheim's contention here that the primary aim of the Cultural Revolutino in China was to begin the process of transforming the age-old patern of the division of labor, thus opening up a new chapter in the history of the human race. He reports his own first-hand observations and inquiries at a Peking textile factory, showing the ways in which workers have been increasingly drawn into the tasks of management. He also examines the planning system at its federal, provincial, and local levels, concentrating on the extent and modes of popular participation.

Communism - Books - Margaret Mead - Soviet Attitudes Toward Authority,...nary Approach to Problems of Soviet Character 1961.jpg

Margaret Mead (December 16, 1901 – November 15, 1978) was an American [[cultural anthropology|cultural anthropologist]], who was frequently a featured writer and speaker in the mass media throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

She was both a popularizer of the insights of anthropology into modern American and Western culture, and also a respected, if controversial, academic anthropologist. Her reports about the attitudes towards sex in South Pacific and Southeast Asian traditional cultures amply informed the 1960s sexual revolution. Mead was a champion of broadened sexual mores within a context of traditional western religious life.

An Anglican Christian, she played a considerable part in the drafting of the 1979 American Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

She was a recognizable figure in academia, usually wearing a distinctive cape and carrying a tall, forked walking stick.

Stephen C. Averill - Revolution in the Highlands, China's Jinggangshan Base Area (2005).jpg

This extensively researched and elegantly written study offers a fine-grained analysis of the origins of the Chinese communist revolution in the countryside. Building on decades of research in newly available sources and multiple trips to Jiangxi, Stephen Averill provides a definitive local perspective on the rise of a revolution that reshaped China and the world. A rich work of social history, it goes beyond conventional Mao-centered narrative to explore the social cleavages that enabled the revolution to grow and dramatically influenced the structure of conflict within the party itself. Posthumously published with an introduction by Joseph W. Esherick and Elizabeth J. Perry, this book will stand as a memorial to the remarkable scholarship of a pioneer researcher on the social history of the Chinese revolution. Students and scholars interested in modern China and in the social origins of revolution will find it essential reading.

Yuri N. Maltsev - Requiem for Marx (1993).jpg

After the fall of communism, and certainly after this wide-ranging demolition of Marxism by Austrian scholars, who can possibly defend Marxism? Plenty of people, many of them smart otherwise but uneducated in economics. This book is the antidote, covering the whole history of this nutty and dangerous system of thought
It begins by an alternatively hilarious and tragic introduction by the editor Yuri Maltsev. He describes in vivid detail life in the Soviet Union, which, he points out contrary to myth, was indeed an attempt to realize Marx's vision. Of course the system moved away from the strict doctrine, lest everyone in the country be reduced to the most primitive possible economic conditions. He describes a society in which nothing works, ethics and morals collapse, and absurdities abound in every aspect of daily life. It is a priceless first-hand account.
Next come sweeping essays by David Gordon and Hans-Hermann Hoppe that get into the guts of the Marxian system and show where it went wrong from both a philosophical and economic perspective. Hoppe in particular here shows how Marx took classical liberal doctrine on the state and misapplied it in ways that contradicted all logic and experience.
Gary North provides a devastating look at Marx the man, while Ralph Raico zeros in on the Marxian doctrine of class. Finally, and as a triumphant finish, Rothbard offers a wholesale revision of the basis of Marxism. It was not economics, he says. It was the longing for a universal upheaval to overthrow all things we know about the world and replace it with a crazed fantasy based secular/religious longings. Rothbard finds all this in the unknown writings of Marx and his post-millennial predecessors in the history of ideas.
This book made its first appearance in 1992, and has been out of print all these years. It is fantastic to have it back and available in this very affordable edition.

The opening of the former Soviet Union to the West over the past three years has made accessible, for the first time, much new material on the Red Army of the Great Patriotic War - the huge and varied forces which won some of the greatest battles of World War II against the German invasion. This book contains a range of rare, authentic uniforms modelled and photographed in Moscow: tank commanders and generals, assault infantry and women medics, pilots and NKVD security officers, artillerymen, camouflaged scouts, and many more. The photographs are backed-up by close-ups of insignia and personal equipment.

Esther Kingston-Mann - Lenin and the Problem of Ma rxist Peasant Revolution (1983).jpg

As a Marxist, Lenin believed that peasants were petty bourgeois individuals and stubbornly denied the collective patterns of peasant political resistance. Yet at the same time, he embraced the peasant militance that so strongly contrasted with what he called the preference of liberal and radical intellectuals for 'a little drab, beggarly but peaceful legality'. This compelling account of Lenin's peasant strategy, which emerged out of decades of contradiction between Marxist dogma and the realities of Russian rural life, makes abundantly clear both the reasons for Lenin's success and the sources of future disaster.

The Soviet Union in World Politics provides an introductory history of Soviet foreign policy and international relations from 1945 to the end of the Cold War and the break up of the USSR. Geoffrey Roberts summarizes historical and political controversies about Soviet foreign policy and brings the most recent research to bear on these debates. The book examines the role of ideology in the Cold War and discusses Stalin's role in the formulation of policy. Using the latest evidence available from the Soviet archives, it offers an excellent framework for the exploration of relevant issues and a guide to further reading and research.

The contents of this book were discussed at a seminar in Oxford in 2003, held under the auspices of the Brookings Institution.

Berlin's editor, Henry Hardy, had prepared the essays for collective publication and here recounts their history. In his foreword, Brookings president Strobe Talbott, an expert on the Soviet Union, relates the essays to Berlin's other work. The Soviet Mind will assume its rightful place among Berlin's works and will prove invaluable for policymakers, students, and those interested in Russian politics, past, present and future.

Communism - Books - Ludmilla Stern - Western Intellectuals and the Sov...on, 1920-40,From Red Square to the Left Bank 2006.jpg

Despite the appalling record of the Soviet Union on human rights questions, many western intellectuals with otherwise impeccable liberal credentials were strong supporters the Soviet Union in the interwar period. This book explores how this seemingly impossible situation came about.
Focusing in particular on the work of various official and semi-official bodies, including Comintern, the International Association of Revolutionary Writers, the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, and the Foreign Commission of the Soviet Writers' Union, this book shows how cultural propaganda was always a high priority for the Soviet Union, and how successful this cultural propaganda was in seducing so many Western thinkers.

Marc Garcelon - Revolutionary Passage, From Soviet To Post-Soviet Russia, 1985-2000 (2005).jpg

Revolutionary Passage is a cultural, social, and political history of Russia during its critical period of transformation at the end of the twentieth century. Marc Garcelon traces the history of perestroika and the rise of Vladimir Putin, arguing that the pressure Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms put on the Soviet system gave birth to movements for democratic change. He also shows that the very political arrangements that prompted the fall of Communism also killed hopes for subsequent reform.

At the turning point of this political revolution stood Democratic Russia, or DemRossiia, the principal organization of the Russian democratic movement that helped to dismantle the Soviet system and force the Soviet leadership to change course. However, as post-Soviet Russia committed itself to globalization and U.S.-style economic reforms, the country directed itself away from the Democratic reforms called for by organizations like DemRossiia, and such groups collapsed. Revolutionary Passage provides a close examination of the DemRossiia. Garcelon deftly illuminates the rise and decline of this organization, and how the processes of revolutionary change impacted both Russia and the world.

Mari Olsen - The Soviet Union, Vietnam and China, 1949-64, Changing Alliances (2006).jpg

This book analyzes Chinese influence on Soviet policies toward Vietnam and shows how China, beginning in the late 1940s, was assigned the role as the main link between Moscow and Hanoi.

Drawing on new information on Sino-Soviet-Vietnamese relationship in the early 1960s this volume offers a fascinating insight into communication within the communist camp. As long as this functioned well, Beijing's role as Moscow's major partner in Vietnam was a success. Moscow could focus on other, more pressing, issues while Beijing took care of Vietnam. With the Sino-Soviet split in the open, especially from 1963 onwards, Moscow was forced to make the vital decision on whether to support the Vietnamese communists. This book shows how the Soviet failure to understand the Vietnamese commitment to reunification, combined with the growing tensions between Moscow and Beijing, reduced Soviet influence in Hanoi in a significant period leading up the U.S. intervention in Vietnam.

The author has used two particular approaches, the leverage of smaller states on superpower politics and the validity of ideology in foreign policy analysis, to explain the dynamics of Soviet perceptions of the Chinese role in Vietnam, as well as to determine from what point Moscow began to perceive Beijing as a liability rather than an asset in their dealings with Vietnam.

This book will be of great interest to students of Cold War history, International History and Asian politics in general.

Marina Balina - An Anthology of Russian and Soviet Fairy Tales (2005).jpg

um of folkloric, literary, and critical texts that show how the Russian fairy tale acquired political and historical meanings during the Soviet era

We were born to make fairy tales come true. As one of Stalinism's more memorable slogans, this one suggests that the fairy tale figured in Soviet culture as far more than a category of children's literature. How much more-and how cannily Russian fairy tales reflect and interpret Soviet culture, especially in its utopian ambitions-becomes clear for the first time in Politicizing Magic, a compendium of folkloric, literary, and critical texts that demonstrate the degree to which ancient fairy-tale fantasies acquired political and historical meanings during the catastrophic twentieth century.
Introducing Western readers to the most representative texts of Russian folkloric and literary tales, this book documents a rich exploration of this colorful genre through all periods of Soviet literary production (1920-1985) by authors with varied political and aesthetic allegiances. Here are traditional Russian folkloric tales and transformations of these tales that, adopting the didacticism of Soviet ideology, proved significant for the official discourse of Socialist Realism. Here, too, are narratives produced during the same era that use the fairy-tale paradigm as a deconstructive device aimed at the very underpinnings of the Soviet system. The editors' introductory essays acquaint readers with the fairy-tale paradigm and the permutations it underwent within the utopian dream of Soviet culture, deftly placing each-from traditional folklore to fairy tales of Socialist Realism, to real-life events recast as fairy tales for ironic effect-in its literary, historical, and political context.

Matthew J. Ouimet - The Rise and Fall of the Brezh nev Doctrine in Soviet Foreign Policy (2003).jpg

Since the sudden collapse of the communist system in Eastern Europe in 1989, scholars have tried to explain why the Soviet Union stood by and watched as its empire crumbled. The recent release of extensive archival documentation in Moscow and the appearance of an increasing number of Soviet political memoirs now offer a greater perspective on this historic process and permit a much deeper look into its causes.

The Rise and Fall of the Brezhnev Doctrine in Soviet Foreign Policy is a comprehensive study detailing the collapse of Soviet control in Eastern Europe between 1968 and 1989, focusing especially on the pivotal Solidarity uprisings in Poland. Based heavily on firsthand testimony and fresh archival findings, it constitutes a fundamental reassessment of Soviet foreign policy during this period. Perhaps most important, it offers a surprising account of how Soviet foreign policy initiatives in the late Brezhnev era defined the parameters of Mikhail Gorbachev's later position of laissez-faire toward Eastern Europe - a position that ultimately led to the downfall of socialist governments all over Europe.
