AMAZON USER'S REVIEW:
I’m glad to see DC finally doing a comprehensive collection of the Post-Crisis Batman and Detective Comics issues and hope this series of trades will continue right up to the “Knightfall” story. This particular collection is more like Volume 2 as the issues preceding those collected here were released in the “Second Chances” book. My only major complaint is that this book leaves out issues #426-429 which is the classic “Death in the Family” story. If you want a continuous reading experience you have to stop after #425 and go grab a separate book (if you have it) to read that story and then come back to this book for the follow-up. Kind of a pain, but minor compared to the fact that a lot of the material here is being collected for the first time.

This is a Batman story that is part of DC Comic’s Elseworlds tale. A late 1980s and early 1990s series this situates classic DC heroes in a different era and historical time period. I love the line for the opening to Elseworlds tale, which preface tells us that “In Elseworlds, super-heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places - some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow.” This particular story tells the story of Batman situated during the American Civil War. Bruce Wayne is part of Union Army and goes undercover as “Batman” on a secret mission sent by President Abraham Lincoln.

Brian Azzarello's Joker.cbr

Joker is an American graphic novel published by DC Comics in 2008. Written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Lee Bermejo, it is based on characters from DC's Batman series, focusing primarily on the title character. It is a unique take on the Batman mythos, set outside regular continuity and narrated by one of the Joker's henchmen.

The Joker's appearance in The Dark Knight (2008) bears strong resemblance to Bermejo's drawings. Bermejo has stated that he is unsure if the filmmakers were influenced by his design; an early sketch of his Joker was posted publicly in 2006 on a Batman film website, and in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel #3, a newspaper has the same version of Joker as a photo.

The graphic novel generally received positive reviews. IGN stated "Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo's Joker is a deeply disturbing and completely unnerving work, a literary achievement that takes its place right alongside Alan Moore's The Killing Joke as one of the few successful attempts to scratch beneath the surface of the Joker's impenetrable psyche." AICN noted that "The story is compelling, especially the gut-wrenching showdown at the end of the book, and the art is mouth-wateringly good."
