Jennifer A. Lemak - Southern Life, Northern City (2008).jpg

Southern Life, Northern City is the inspirational story of an African American community in Albany that has fought doggedly for generations to preserve its legacy and way of life. In the 1920s and 1930s rural African American families living in Shubuta, Mississippi, began relocating to Albany, New York. These former sharecroppers initially settled in Albany's South End, but quickly became unhappy with the vice and overcrowding of city life.

Marshall Boswell, Carl Rollyson - Encyclopedia of American Literature, 1607–to the present (2002).jpg

This wide-ranging encyclopedia of American literature consists of three chronological volumes, each covering an era in American history.
Volume 1, which treats the Colonial and Revolutionary era, was written by Berkin (history, Baruch; Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution), while
Volumes 2 (The Age of Romanticism and Realism) and 3 (The Modern and Postmodern Period) were written by Paddock and Rollyson, respectively, who coauthored Herman Melville A to Z and hold Ph.D.s in English. All three volumes feature an introductory essay followed by alphabetically arranged entries and a chronology. The entries, which range from literary figures, genres, and literary characters to specific works, topical entries such as "Lost Generation," and musicals, provide not just facts but interpretation of the topic's importance as well. They are usually brief often only one to two paragraphs, although a few run over one page and conclude with a list of sources. The greatest downfall of this set is the lack of consistency. For example, only Volume 1 includes citations to works by the person under discussion, as well as a few secondary sources. Also, the cross references refer only to articles within a volume, not across the set. Thus, volumes 2 and 3 both include articles on detective fiction, but neither indicates that the other volume covers the same topic in a different time period. Worst of all, although each volume has a cumulative "List of Entries," there is no cumulative index. Authors are included here who do not appear in Continuum's recent Encyclopedia of American Literature, such as John Kennedy Toole and Patricia Highsmith. However, such authors do appear in the wonderful Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia, which remains more authoritative and larger in scope. Given these drawbacks as well as the steep price, this title is not recommended unless your library is in need of a chronological approach to American literature or a more current reference.

Robert M. Stern - Globalization and International Trade Policies (2009).jpg

This book brings together a collection of papers that Robert M Stern and his co-authors have written in recent years. The collection addresses a variety of issues pertinent to the global trading system. One group of papers deals with globalization in terms of what the public needs to know about this phenomenon and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO), whether some countries may be hurt by globalization, how global market integration relates to national sovereignty, and how and whether considerations of fairness are and should be dealt with in the global trading system and WTO negotiations. A second group of papers consists of analytical and computational modeling studies of multilateral, regional, and bilateral trading arrangements and negotiations from a global and national perspective for the United States and other major trading countries. The remaining papers include an empirical analysis of barriers to international services transactions and the consequences of liberalization, and issues of international trade and labor standards.

Thomas J. Tighe - Who's in Charge of America's Res earch Universities (2003).jpg

This book explores the American research university, and, in a larger sense, addresses knowledge creation in our society, since research universities are the primary means for the production and dissemination of basic knowledge in the public interest. Universities not only play a major role in technological, economic, and cultural development, but also prepare much of the country's leadership, particularly in the sciences, engineering, medicine, and other professions.

James E. Perone - The Sound of Stevie Wonder, His Words and Music (2006).jpg

Since his professional debut in 1962, Stevie Wonder has recorded sixty-four singles that have made the Billboard top 100, including ten that reached number one. Wonder was one of the first Motown artists to have complete control over the writing, arranging, and recording of his songs, and achieved that stature before he was 20 years old. He has won 17 Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and earned the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Equally important, his work as a producer, arranger, and instrumentalist on other artists' recordings has put him in the highest rank of musical collaborators. This is the first work of criticism on this important documentarian of American life, as well as the introductory volume in The Praeger Singer-Songwriter Collection. Through a combination of biography and critical analysis, James Perone's groundbreaking new book reveals the many ways in which Stevie Wonder's body of work emerged, developed, reflected its time, and influenced myriad other artists.

After revealing the social, cultural, and political context of Wonder's work, the book provides detailed analysis of his compositions and recordings, with a focus on both his well-known songs and those known only to his hardcore fans. The volume also contains discussions of cover versions of Wonder's compositions, a discography of his recordings, a song title index, an annotated bibliography, and a general index.

Mark Kreidler - Four Days to Glory, Wrestling with the Soul of the American Heartland (2007).jpg

Somewhere beyond the circle of money, glitz, drugs, and controversy that characterizes professional sports in America, remnants of an ideal exist. In Iowa, that ideal survives in the form of high school wrestling.

Each a three-time state champion, Jay Borschel and Dan LeClere have a chance in their senior year to join the sport's most elite group: the "four-timers," wrestlers who win four consecutive state titles. For Jay, a ferocious competitor who feeds off criticism and doubt, a victory would mean vindication over the great mass of skeptics waiting for him to fail. For Dan, who carries on his back the burdens of his tiny farming community, the dreams of his hard-driving coach and father, and his own personal demons, another title is the only acceptable outcome.

Four Days to Glory is the story of America as told through its small towns and their connection to sport the way it was once routinely perceived: as a means of mattering to the folks next door.

Anthony Slide - Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine, A History of Star Makers, Fabricators, and Gossip Mongers (2010).jpg

01 - USA - Anthony Slide - Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine, A H...y of Star Makers, Fabricators, and Gossip Mongers 2010.jpg

The fan magazine has often been viewed simply as a publicity tool, a fluffy exercise in self-promotion by the film industry. But as an arbiter of good and bad taste, as a source of knowledge, and as a gateway to the fabled land of Hollywood and its stars, the American fan magazine represents a fascinating and indispensable chapter in journalism and popular culture.

Anthony Slide's Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine provides the definitive history of this artifact. It charts the development of the fan magazine from the golden years when Motion Picture Story Magazine and Photoplay first appeared in 1911 to its decline into provocative headlines and titillation in the 1960s and afterward. Slide discusses how the fan magazines dealt with gossip and innuendo, and how they handled nationwide issues such as Hollywood scandals of the 1920s, World War II, the blacklist, and the death of President Kennedy. Fan magazines thrived in the twentieth century, and they presented the history of an industry in a unique, sometimes accurate, and always entertaining style.

This major cultural history includes a new interview with 1970s media personality Rona Barrett, as well as original commentary from a dozen editors and writers. Also included is a chapter on contributions to the fan magazines from well-known writers such as Theodore Dreiser and e. e. cummings. The book is enhanced by an appendix documenting some 268 American fan magazines and includes detailed publication histories.

Candice Millard - The River of Doubt, Theodore Roo sevelt's Darkest Journey (2006).jpg

In a gripping account, Millard focuses on an episode in Teddy Roosevelt's search for adventure that nearly came to a disastrous end. A year after Roosevelt lost a third-party bid for the White House in 1912, he decided to chase away his blues by accepting an invitation for a South American trip that quickly evolved into an ill-prepared journey down an unexplored tributary of the Amazon known as the River of Doubt. The small group, including T.R.'s son Kermit, was hampered by the failure to pack enough supplies and the absence of canoes sturdy enough for the river's rapids. An injury Roosevelt sustained became infected with flesh-eating bacteria and left the ex-president so weak that, at his lowest moment, he told Kermit to leave him to die in the rainforest. Millard, a former staff writer for National Geographic, nails the suspense element of this story perfectly, but equally important to her success is the marvelous amount of detail she provides on the wildlife that Roosevelt and his fellow explorers encountered on their journey, as well as the cannibalistic indigenous tribe that stalked them much of the way.

Richard K. Caputo - U.S. Social Welfare Reform, Po licy Transitions from 1981 to the Present (2011).jpg

U. S. Social Welfare Reform examines pivotal changes in social welfare for low-income families in the United States between 1981, the advent of the Reagan administration, and 2008, the end of the G.W. Bush administration. It focuses on the change from the Federal-state open entitlement Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program to the time-limited state run Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program which Congress authorized with passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996. The book also focuses on the development of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, enacted in 1975 against the backdrop of failed efforts to nationalize AFDC which aimed at providing a basic income to all poor families, but which blossomed with continued bipartisan support in the 1990s. This book also explores alternative strategies to assist low-income families, including job training programs. It present original research on the educational and economic well-being of youth from low-income families who participated in government sponsored job training programs in the late 1970 and early 1980s.

Reinhard Neck, Jan-Egbert Sturm - Sustainability o f Public Debt (2008).jpg

In recent decades, governments have built up substantial public debt, which is often accompanied by a growing public sector and fiscal policies that neglect long-term considerations. The contributors to this CESifo volume consider whether the development of public debt in the United States and six EU countries is sustainable—that is, whether fiscal policies in these countries can be continued without creating the potential for government bankruptcy.

01 - USA - Thomas Lum, Christopher M. Blanchard, Nicolas Cook, an...h - China and the U.S, Comparing Global Influence 2010.jpg

This book compares the People's Republic of China's (PRC) and U.S. projections of global influence, with an emphasis on non-coercive means or 'soft power', and suggests ways to think about U.S. foreign policy options in light of China's emergence. The global public images of the two countries are compared in this book and PRC and U.S. uses of soft power tools are described, such as public diplomacy, state diplomacy, and foreign assistance. Other forms of soft power such as military diplomacy, global trade and investment, and sovereign wealth funds are also examined. Furthermore, this book analyses PRC and U.S. diplomatic and economic activities in five developing regions - Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

R. David Edmunds - The New Warriors (2001).jpg

The dawn of the 20th century found Native Americans in dire straits. Ill educated, reduced to living on territory that was a fraction of their former areas, and subject to the whims of the federal government, they were in great need of creative leadership. In this collection, editor Edmunds (history, Univ. of Texas, Dallas; Tecumseh and the Quest for Indian Leadership) and his equally competent contributors tell the stories of 14 Native Americans who have altered the landscape in Indian country and beyond. The leaders profiled here include, among others, the charismatic American Indian Movement leader Russell Means; Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to lead a large Indian nation; political activists LaDonna Harris and Ada Deer; Phillip Martin, the dynamic Choctaw leader who spearheaded that tribe's amazing economic revitalization; and Walter Echo-Hawk, a lawyer for the Native American Rights Fund.

Julie Des Jardins - Women and the Historical Enter prise in America (2002).jpg

In Women and the Historical Enterprise in America, Julie Des Jardins explores American women's participation in the practice of history from the late nineteenth century through the end of World War II, a period in which history became professionalized as an increasingly masculine field of scientific inquiry. Des Jardins reveals how women nevertheless transformed the profession during these years in their roles as writers, preservationists, educators, government workers, archivists, and social activists.
