On a fateful day in 1889, the Oklahoma land rush begins, and for thousands of settlers the future is up for grabs. One of those pioneers is Creed McReynolds, fresh from the East with a lawyer's education and a head full of ambition. Creed lands in Guthrie Station, the designated territorial capital, where he must prove that he is more than the mixed-blood kid once driven from his own land.

Michael E. Kraft - Environmental Policy and Politi cs, 5th Edition (2010).jpg

Covering global threats such as climate change, population growth, and loss of biodiversity, as well as national, state, and local problems of environmental pollution, energy use, and natural resource use and conservation, this exciting and unique text covers U.S. policy-making processes, the legislative and administrative settings for policy decisions, the role of interest groups and public opinion in environmental politics, and the public policies that result.

Stephen Armstrong - 5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations, U.S. History (2003).jpg

An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style
Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees.

Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current
AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks.

Other outstanding features include:

* Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
* Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
* Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
* Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
* Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
* Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

Daniel Marston, Carter Malkasian - Counterinsurgen cy in Modern Warfare (2008).jpg

Through history armies of occupation and civil power have been repeatedly faced with the challenges of insurgency. US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan has highlighted this form of conflict in the modern world. Armies, sometimes reluctantly, have had to adopt new doctrines and tactics to deal with the problems of insurgency and diverse counterinsurgency strategies have been developed. These have ranged from conventional military operations to a combination of military and political strategy including propaganda, Psy-Ops, and other approaches.

In Counterinsurgency in Modern Warfare 13 contributors examine developments in counterinsurgency from the early 20th century to the present. Each author, an expert in his field, discusses in depth the conduct and outcomes of operations across the globe, including the Arab-Israeli conflict, Afghanistan and Iraq, and draws out the lessons to be learned from them.

This book is a timely, serious yet accessible survey of a critical facet of modern warfare and present-day global conflict.

Dick Golembiewski - Milwaukee Television History, The Analog Years (2008).jpg

Milwaukee -not New York, Chicago or Los Angeles - was the scene of a number of television firsts: Here the very first application for a commercial TV license was filed with the FCC in 1938. The first female program director and news director in a major market were both at Milwaukee stations. Milwaukee was a major battleground in the VHF vs. UHF war that began in the 1950s.

The struggle to put an educational TV station on the air was fought at the national, state and local levels by the Milwaukee Vocational School. WMVS-TV was the first educational TV station to run a regular schedule of colorcasts, and WMVT was the site of the first long-distance test of a digital over-the-air signal.

This detailed story of the rich history of the citys
television stations since 1930 is told through facts, anecdotes, and quotations from the on-air talent, engineers, and managers who conceived, constructed, and put the stations on the air. Included are discussions of the many locally-produced shows often done live that once made up a large part of a station s broadcast day. Through these stories, some told here for the first time, and the books extensive photographic collection of over 470 images, the history of Milwaukee television comes alive again for the reader.

Steven Weber - The End of Arrogance, America in th e Global Competition of Ideas (2010).jpg

In this concise book, Weber, a professor at Berkeley, and Jentleson, a professor at Duke, identify "five big ideas" that dominated international politics in the 20th century: peace is better than war; benign hegemony is better than a balance of power; capitalism is better than socialism; democracy is better than dictatorship; and western culture is superior to other cultures. The authors argue that for much of the world a repressive government that achieves economic progress (as is the case in Singapore, for instance) is preferable to a democratic government that fails to improve living standards; this shift, the authors argue, needs to be understood by the American people in order for the U.S. to successfully transition from lone superpower to savvy and influential player. Though their message is far from new, it's extremely well articulated. Yet finding an audience for this book may be a challenge; it's too simplistic for foreign policy wonks and too sophisticated to find a home on Main Street.

John D. Fairfield - The Public and Its Possibiliti es, Triumphs and Tragedies in the American City (2 010).jpg

In his compelling reinterpretation of American history, The Public and Its Possibilities, John Fairfield argues that our unrealized civic aspirations provide the essential counterpoint to an excessive focus on private interests. Inspired by the revolutionary generation, nineteenth-century Americans struggled to build an economy and a culture to complement their republican institutions. But over the course of the twentieth century, a corporate economy and consumer culture undercut civic values, conflating consumer and citizen. Fairfield places the city at the center of American experience, describing how a resilient demand for an urban participatory democracy has bumped up against the fog of war, the allure of the marketplace, and persistent prejudices of race, class, and gender. In chronicling and synthesizing centuries of U.S. historyoincluding the struggles of the antislavery, labor, women's rights movementsoFairfield explores the ebb and flow of civic participation, activism, and democracy. He revisits what the public has done for civic activism, and the possibility of taking a greater role. In this age where there has been a move towards greater participation in America's public life from its citizens, Fairfield's bookowritten in an accessible, jargon-free style and addressed to general readersois especially topical.

Yvonne Tasker - The Action and Adventure Cinema (2 004).jpg

Action has established itself as one of the leading commercial genres of the New Hollywood cinema, generating extensive debate in the process. This exciting collection addresses action and adventure from the silent to the contemporary period, exploring diverse questions of aesthetics, industry and ideology. Contributors consider how action might best be defined, how it has developed historically, and how it works formally. The critical reception and standing of action and adventure cinema is considered in relation to questions of national culture, violence and the "art" of cinema.
Themes explored include genre and definitions; early action, sensation and melodrama; spectacle and narrative; stars and bodies; class; gender; race and ethnicity. Attempting to evaluate the significance of this type of filmmaking for both popular cinema and film studies, the book underlines the central place of action and adventure within film history.

Pete Simi, Robert Futrell - American Swastika, Ins ide the White Power Movement's Hidden Spaces of Ha te (2010).jpg

01 - USA - Pete Simi, Robert Futrell - American Swastika, Inside t...e the White Power Movements Hidden Spaces of Hate 2010.jpg

American Swastika takes readers through hidden enclaves of hate in America, exploring how White Supremacy movements thrive nationwide, even in a nation that preaches equality and tolerance, and looks toward how we can work to prevent future violence. Drawing on over a decade of research and interviews, the authors explain the difference between various hate groups, then show readers how White Supremacy groups cultivate their membership and ideals through Aryan homes, parties, rituals, music festivals, and online. Powerful case studies, first person accounts, and interview excerpts take readers deep inside these movements.

Review
Even with the historic victory of Barack Obama, the legacy of white supremacy in America is alive and well. This book lays bare the specific groups and particular practices that sustain the extreme forms of the legacy. Don't miss it! --Cornel West, Princeton University

This book is an eye-opener in several ways, revealing the every day lives of an important element in the U.S. that has power beyond their numbers. Pete Simi and Robert Futrell's data describe real people with real concerns that are too-often dismissed as the lunatic fringe. --James F. Short, Jr., Washington State University

If you want to understand the white power movement in the U.S., you must read American Swastika. Pete Simi and Robert Futrell draw on their own observations and interviews as well as the work of previous researchers to produce a compelling, well-researched, and comprehensive examination of white power activism. They skillfully tackle the difficult issue of explaining why this movement has persisted in one form or another for so long. --Betty A. Dobratz, Iowa State University, author of White Power, White Pride

Philip L. Barlow - Mormons and the Bible (1997).jpg

The Mormons have been one of the most studied American religious groups; still, no consensus exists about the essential nature of the movement or its place in American religion. In this study, Barlow analyzes the approaches taken to the Bible by key Mormon leaders, from founder Joseph Smith up to the present day. He shows that Mormon attitudes toward the Bible comprise an extraordinary mix of conservative, liberal, and radical ingredients: an almost fundamentalist adherence to the King James Version of the Bible coexists with belief in the possibility of new revelation and surprising ideas on the limits of human language. Exploring this unique Mormon stance on scripture, Barlow takes important steps toward unraveling the mystery of this quintessential American religious phenomenon.

Gary M. Lavergne - A Sniper in the Tower, The Char les Whitman Murders (1997).jpg

The bodies kept falling, the blood was real, and the man on the deck, a consummate actor for a number of years, was no longer acting. On August 1, 1966, Charles Joseph Whitman ascended the University of Texas Tower and committed what was then the largest simultaneous mass murder in American history. He gunned down forty-five people inside and around the Tower before he was killed by two Austin police officers. During the previous evening he had killed his wife and mother, bringing the total to sixteen people dead and at least thirty-one wounded.

Mark Grimsley, Brooks D. Simpson - The Collapse of the Confederacy (2001).jpg

Practically all Civil War historians agree that after the fall of Atlanta in September 1864 and Lincoln's triumphant reelection in November, the South had no remaining chance to make good its independence. Well aware that Appomattox and Durham Station were close at hand, historians have treated the war's final months in a fashion that smacks strongly of denouement: the great, tragic conflict rolls on to its now-certain end.
