Joseph Smith - The Book of Mormon, The Original 18 30 Edition (1990).jpg

Ever since its appearance in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been a contentious volume. Claimed by millions of Latter Day Saints to be a record of the ancient Israelites and their journeys in the Americas, this volume has earned its place amongst the classics of apocryphal biblical literature. Here is reprinted the original 1830 edition of this revered text, uncorrected, undoctored, and unimproved. It is an important re-source for comparison with the current "official" edition published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At once scandalous and devotional, the Book of Mormon continues to fascinate and inspire.

Matthew Algeo - Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure , The True Story of a Great American Road Trip (20 09).jpg

On June 19, 1953, Harry Truman got up early, packed the trunk of his Chrysler New Yorker, and did something no other former president has done before or since: he hit the road. No Secret Service protection. No traveling press. Just Harry and his childhood sweetheart Bess, off to visit old friends, take in a Broadway play, celebrate their wedding anniversary in the Big Apple, and blow a bit of the money he’d just received to write his memoirs. Hopefully incognito.
In this lively history, author Matthew Algeo meticulously details how Truman’s plan to blend in went wonderfully awry. Fellow diners, bellhops, cabbies, squealing teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention, and one very by-the-book Pennsylvania state trooper--all unknowingly conspired to blow his cover. Algeo revisits the Trumans’ route, staying at the same hotels and eating at the same diners, and takes readers on brief detours into topics such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By the end of the 2,500-mile journey, you will have a new and heartfelt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president.

Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought, Kn owledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowe rment (2000).jpg

01 - USA - Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought, Knowled...e, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment 2000.jpg

In Black Feminist Thought, Patricia Hill Collins explores the words and ideas of Black feminist intellectuals as well as those African-American women outside academe. She not only provides an interpretive framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, Alice Walker, and Audre Lorde, but she shows the importance of self-defined knowledge for group empowerment. In the tenth anniversary edition of this award-winning work, Patricia Hill Collins expands the basic arguments of the first edition by adding several important new themes. A new discussion of heterosexism as a system of power, an expanded treatment of images of Black womanhood, U.S. Black feminism's connections to Black Diasporic feminisms, and more attention to the importance of social class and nationalism all appear in the new edition. In addition, the new edition includes recent developments in black cultural studies, especially black popular culture, as well as recent events and trends such as the Anita Hill hearings and the backlash against affirmative action.

Mark Lardas - Raid Roughshod Through Dixie, Griers on's Raid 1863 (2010).jpg

On April 17, 1863 Benjamin Grierson led a force of 1,700 Union cavalrymen across enemy lines into the Confederate-held Tennessee in a bold diversionary raid. Over the next seventeen days, Grierson's horsemen caused havoc by destroying railroad lines, attacking outposts, burning military stores and fighting numerous small actions, before breaking back through the lines at Baton Rouge.
The raid was a tremendous success, not only by virtue of the destruction it caused, but also because the Confederates were forced to divert thousands of troops away from the front lines during General Grant's critical Vicksburg offensive. This book tells the complete story of one of the most daring Union raids of the war.

Explores whether the pace at which the U.S. Coast Guard can acquire surface and air assets that it will operate in the deepwater environment (50 or more nautical miles from shore) can be accelerated and whether the original Integrated Deepwater System program to modernize its aging ships and aircraft will provide the Coast Guard with a force structure to meet the demands of its traditional missions and emerging responsibilities as part of the new Department of Homeland Security.

01 - USA - David H. Jackson Jr. - Booker T. Washington and the Str...remacy, The Southern Educational Tours, 1908-1912 2008.jpg

This book narrates and analyzes the southern tours by Booker T. Washington and his associates in 1908-1912. The author provides analysis of the importance of these tours in early 20th-century race relations, and relates them to Washington’s racial philosophy and its impact on the various parts of black society. Instead of focusing on how Washington struggled against W.E.B. DuBois in a quest for leadership, this study emphasizes how he fought to undermine white supremacy.

J.W. Joseph - Another's Country, Archaeological an d Historical Perspectives on Cultural Interactions in the Southern Colonies (2002).jpg

01 - USA - J.W. Joseph - Anothers Country, Archaeological and His...on Cultural Interactions in the Southern Colonies 2002.jpg

The 18th-century South was a true melting pot, bringing together colonists from England, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and other locations, in additions to African slaves - all of whom shared in the experiences of adapting to a new environment and interacting with American Indians. The shared process of immigration, adaptation, and creolization resulted in a rich and diverse historic mosaic of cultures. The cultural encounters of these groups of settlers would ultimately define the meaning of life in the 19th-century South. The much-studied plantation society of that era and the Confederacy that sprang from it have become the enduring identities of the South. A full understanding of southern history is not possible, however, without first understanding the intermingling and interactions of the region's 18th-century settlers. In the essays collected here, some of the South's leading historical archaeologists examine various aspects of the colonial experience, attempting to understand how cultural identity was expressed, why cultural diversity was eventually replaced by a common identity, and how the various cultures intermeshed. Written in accessible language, this book will be valuable to archaeologists and non-archaeologists alike. Cultural, architectural, and military historians, cultural anthropologists, geographers, genealogists, and others interested in the cultural legacy of the South will find much of value in this book.

01 - USA - Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Robin L. ...ey - Feminism and War, Confronting US Imperialism 2008.jpg

Women - both within and without the United States - are being dramatically affected by war as currently waged by that country. But there has been little public space for dialogue about the complex relationship between feminism, women, and U.S. war. The editors have brought together a diverse set of scholars and activists who examine the questions raised by ongoing U.S. military initiatives. These theorists and organizers develop an anti-racist, feminist politics that brings to the foreground an analysis both of imperialist power and forms of resistance to it. The questions they raise include: what are the implications of an imperial nation state laying claim to women's liberation and did U.S. intervention and invasion in fact result in liberation for women in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Edwin Lefevre - Wall Street Stories, Introduction (2008).jpg

“Lefèvre provided me with a goal when I wrote my first Market Wizards book… to write a book that would emulate the spirit of Lefèvre's work in maintaining truth and relevance many years after it was written.”
-from the Foreword by Jack Schwager
The book that launched Edwin Lefèvre's literary career, Wall Street Stories is considered by many to be his most memorable work, second only to Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, his classic fictionalization of the life of Jesse Livermore. Published to great critical acclaim in 1901, Wall Street Stories is a literary romp through the habits and customs of Wall Street. Like all of Lefèvre's fiction it is firmly rooted in the facts as he knew them both as a top financial journalist and a successful investor, and, as was his style, many of the fictional characters in the stories are thinly-veiled portraits of well-known Wall Street personalities such as James R. Keene, Elverton R. Chapman, Roswell Pettibone Flower, and Daniel Drew-names as familiar to the public in their day as Warren Buffet, George Soros, and Julian Robertson are today.
But the charm of the eight tales in Wall Street Stories isn't just in their ability to convey a sense of life in a bygone era. It comes from the timeless insights they offer into human nature warped in the crucible of the stock market. Each of these witty tales of still resonate with poignancy and simple authority.
From the Back Cover
Timeless Wit and Wisdom on the Birth of Modern Wall Street
“Lefévre's lessons on this subject are state of the art-and he provides lots more fun at the same time. His stories are a delight.”
-Peter L. Bernstein, author, Capital Ideas Evolving and Against the Gods
“Wall Street Stories is as relevant today as they were over a century ago. Lefévre's descriptions of investor behavior are now the standard lessons of behavioral finance.”
--Burton G. Malkiel, author, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, 9th Edition
“Wall Street Stories, Edwin Lefévre's collection of masterful short stories, is a box of rare financial bon bons; I guarantee you won't be able to eat just one.”
--William Bernstein, author, The Four Pillars of Investing and Birth of Plenty
“More than a century after he first crafted these insightful parables of fear and greed, Edwin Lefévre's Wall Street Storie continues to furnish investment lessons and wisdom that are as priceless, timeless, and peerless today as they were when American capital markets first emerged onto the global stage.”
-David M. Darst, author, The Art of Asset Allocation, Second Edition
“Markets are driven by the law of supply and demand and human nature (hope, fear, and greed) which doesn't change. Wall Street Stories tells you about stock pools and human psychology on daily display.”

01 - USA - Seth Mallios - The Deadly Politics of Giving, Exchange ...ge and Violence at Ajacan, Roanoke, and Jamestown 2006.jpg

With a focus on indigenous cultural systems and agency theory, this volume analyzes Contact Period relations between North American Middle Atlantic Algonquian Indians and the Spanish Jesuits at Ajacan (1570-72) and English settlers at Roanoke Island (1584-90) and Jamestown Island (1607-12). It is an anthropological and ethnohistorical study of how European violations of Algonquian gift-exchange systems led to intercultural strife during the late 1500s and early 1600s, destroying Ajacan and Roanoke, and nearly destroying Jamestown.

Stephen M. Feldman - Free Expression and Democracy in America, A History (2008).jpg

From the 1798 Sedition Act to the war on terror, numerous presidents, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, and local officials have endorsed the silencing of free expression. If the connection between democracy and the freedom of speech is such a vital one, why would so many governmental leaders seek to quiet their citizens? Free Expression and Democracy traces two rival traditions in American culture—suppression of speech and dissent as a form of speech—to provide an unparalleled overview of the law, history, and politics of individual rights in the United States.
Charting the course of free expression alongside the nation’s political evolution, from the birth of the Constitution to the quagmire of the Vietnam War, Stephen M. Feldman argues that our level of freedom is determined not only by the Supreme Court, but also by cultural, social, and economic forces. Along the way, he pinpoints the struggles of excluded groups—women, African Americans, and laborers—to participate in democratic government as pivotal to the development of free expression. In an age when our freedom of speech is once again at risk, this momentous book will be essential reading for legal historians, political scientists, and history buffs alike.

William O. Douglas, James O'Fallon - Nature's Just ice, Writings of William O. Dougla (2000).jpg

As the longest-serving Justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, William O. Douglas was known for writing a host of dissenting opinions. He was also a prolific writer off the bench, a man whose work was as much concerned with nature as with law. This collection brings together writings that represent the wide range of Douglan's interests. It includes selections from his autobiographical and political books, and opinions from landmark cases--all reflecting not only his love of justice but also his roots in the Northwest and his lifelong commitment to the environment. These writings demonstrate that Douglas never shied from controvery--whether over interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment or the choice between flies and bait for trout fishing--and offer abundant inspiration for both environmentalists and all who yearn for a more just society. Whether extolling the joys of the wild or defending the rights of citizens, Douglas shows in this work that he truly was Nature's Justice--and one of a kind.

Daniel Byman - Confronting Iraq, U.S. Policy and t he Use of Force Since the Gulf War (2000).jpg

Although Iraq remains hostile to the United States, Baghdad has repeatedly compromised, and at times caved, in response to U.S. pressure and threats. An analysis of attempts to coerce Iraq since Desert Storm reveals that military strikes and other forms of pressure that threatened Saddam Husayn's relationship with his power base proved effective at forcing concessions from the Iraqi regime. When coercing Saddam or other foes, U.S. policymakers should design a strategy around the adversary's "center of gravity" while seeking to neutralize adversary efforts to counter-coerce the United States and appreciating the policy constraints imposed by domestic politics and international alliances.

Jared Orsi - Hazardous Metropolis, Flooding and Ur ban Ecology in Los Angeles (2004).jpg

Although better known for its sunny skies, Los Angeles suffers devastating flooding. This book explores a fascinating and little-known chapter in the city's history--the spectacular failures to control floods that occurred throughout the twentieth century. Despite the city's 114 debris dams, 5 flood control basins, and nearly 500 miles of paved river channels, Southern Californians have discovered that technologically engineered solutions to flooding are just as disaster-prone as natural waterways. Jared Orsi's lively history unravels the strange and often hazardous ways that engineering, politics, and nature have come together in Los Angeles to determine the flow of water. He advances a new paradigm--the urban ecosystem--for understanding the city's complex and unpredictable waterways and other issues that are sure to play a large role in future planning.
