Eric V. Larson - Misfortunes of War, Press and Pub lic Reactions to Civilian Deaths in Wartime (2007).jpg

This book, part of a larger study of ways to reduce collateral damage undertaken for the U.S. Air Force, analyzes media and public reactions to civilian casualty incidents, whether these incidents affect media reporting or public support for military operations, and, if so, how. It examines case studies of incidents of civilian deaths in the February 1991 bombing of the Al Firdos bunker in the Gulf War, the April and May 1999 attacks on the Djakovica convoy and Chinese embassy during the war in Kosovo, the June 2002 attack involving an Afghan wedding party during operations in Afghanistan, and the March 2003 incident involving a large explosion in a crowded Baghdad marketplace to describe and explain how the U.S. and foreign media and publics have responded. For each case study, the study team examined press, public, and leadership responses to these incidents.

Gabor S. Boritt - Jefferson Davis's Generals (2000 ).jpg

Confederate General P.G.T.Beauregard once wrote that "no people ever warred for independence with more relative advantages than the Confederates." If there was any doubt as to what Beauregard sought to imply, he later to chose to spell it out: the failure of the Confederacy lay with the Confederate president Jefferson Davis.
In Jefferson Davis' Generals, a team of the nation's most distinguished Civil War historians present fascinating examinations of the men who led the Confederacy through our nation's bloodiest conflict, focusing in particular on Jefferson Davis' relationships with five key generals who held independent commands: Joseph E. Johnston, Robert E. Lee, P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, and John Bell Hood. Craig Symonds examines the underlying implications of a withering trust between Johnston and his friend Jefferson Davis. And was there really harmony between Davis and Robert E. Lee? A tenuous harmony at best, according to Emory Thomas. Michael Parrish explores how Beauregard and Davis worked through a deep and mutual loathing, while Steven E. Woodworth and Herman Hattaway make contrasting evaluations of the competence of Generals Braxton Bragg and John Bell Hood. Taking a different angle on Davis' ill-fated commanders, Lesley Gordon probes the private side of war through the roles of the generals' wives, and Harold Holzer investigates public perceptions of the Confederate leadership through printed images created by artists of the day. Pulitzer Prize-winner James M. McPherson's final chapter ties the individual essays together and offers a new perspective on Confederate strategy as a whole.
Jefferson Davis' Generals provides stimulating new insights into one of the most vociferously debated topics in Civil War history.

Helen Delpar - Looking South, The Evolution of Lat in Americanist Schloarship in the United States, 1 850-1975 (2007).jpg

01 - USA - Helen Delpar - Looking South, The Evolution of Latin A...anist Schloarship in the United States, 1850-1975 2007.jpg

This is a comprehensive, ambitious, and valuable work on an increasingly important subject. North Americans have studied Latin America since the mid-nineteenth century, when individuals without formal training undertook research on the region. By the early twentieth century, Latin America was recognized as a legitimate field for scholarship, and was incorporated into U.S. academic life through undergraduate and graduate courses on the region and foundation of professional journals and societies. The region initially interested historians and anthropologists, later joined by geographers and other specialists. The first part of the book describes the developments from 1850 to 1935, emphasizing the contributions of historians and anthropologists. The book then presents an account of trends in Latin American studies from 1935 to 1975. Although Latin American studies expanded during the 'Good Neighbor' era and World War II, interest in the region diminished in the 1950s as other regions seemed more relevant in the Cold War. By 1960, several factors, notably the Cuban Revolution, contributed to a revival of interest in Latin America, and the U.S. government and private groups, such as the Ford Foundation, devoted millions to research and teaching on the region. The number of Latin American programs and specialists at U.S. universities increased substantially. This work is the first to trace the evolution of Latin Americanist scholarship in the United States, examining developments in the social sciences as well as changing attitudes toward the region by U.S. scholars. It demonstrates that where Latin America was concerned, conditions within the United States usually dictated the nature and intensity of academic interest.

01 - USA - Janet Rafferty, Evan Peacock - Times River, Archaeolog...gical Syntheses from the Lower Mississippi Valley 2008.jpg

This volume stands as a key general resource for archaeologists working in the region extending from Louisiana through Mississippi north to Missouri and Kentucky, and it represents an opportunity to influence for decades a large part of the archaeological work to take place in the Southeast. The book responds to a need for a comprehensive archaeological overview of the Lower Mississippi Valley that forms a portion of an interstate corridor spanning nine states that will run from southern Michigan to the Texas-Mexico border. The culturally sensitive Mississippi Delta is one of the richest archaeological areas in North America, and it is crucial that research designs be comprehensive, coordinated, and meet current preservation and future research needs. The authors are well-respected researchers from both within and outside the region with expertise in the full range of topics that comprise American archaeology. They examine matters of method and theory, the application of materials science, geophysics, and other high-tech tools in archaeology that provide for optimum data-recovery.

Jeffrey V. Wells - Birder's Conservation Handbook, 100 North American Birds at Risk (2007).jpg

Conservation of avian species is high on the priority list of many birders. Authored by a former National Bird Conservation director for the National Audubon Society, Birder’s Conservation Handbook is a unique guide to 100 of the most at-risk North American species. Written at a level accessible to the layperson, the species accounts were reviewed by 50 experts from many institutions. Introductory essays on topics such as birds as environmental indicators and conservation issues affecting birds offer background material. The taxonomically arranged entries, several pages in length, follow a standard format. A black-and-white illustration of the bird and a range map appear at the beginning of each entry. An overview of the species is followed by “Status and Distribution,” “Ecology,” “Threats,” “Conservation Action,” “Conservation Needs,” and “References” for additional reading. The selection of the 100 most threatened species consists of widely distributed species, such as the American woodcock, ferruginous hawk, Kentucky warbler, and rusty blackbird, as well as lesser-known birds, such as the bristle-thighed curlew, buff-breasted sandpiper, island scrub jay, and red-legged kittiwake. The “Conservation Action” section in each entry is one of the highlights of the book. For example, we learn that habitat restoration is important for conservation of many species, including the Bell’s vireo, California gnatcatcher, and red-headed woodpecker; slowing global warming may benefit such birds as the Florida scrub jay, mottled duck, and whooping crane; and restricting the use of lead shot could limit the decline of the California condor. The entries are followed by several appendixes containing tables of “North American Birds of Conservation Concern Listed by Different Agencies and Organizations,” “Hawaiian Birds of Conservation Concern and Extinct Species,” and “Mexican Government Official List of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Bird Species” and a list of “Agencies and Organizations Involved in Bird Conservation.” A well-constructed subject index, using both common and scientific names, provides easy access to the contents. There is no other book specifically aimed at informing birders and researchers of threats to birds with suggestions of conservation actions to protect birds and their habitats. Highly recommended for public, academic, and special libraries.

01 - USA - Jessie Riposo, Brien Alkire - U.S. Navy Shipyards, An E...on of Workload-and Workforce-Management Practices 2008.jpg

RAND investigated cost-effective workforce-management strategies, alternative workload allocations, and the relevant best practices of comparable organizations to assist the Navy in managing the public shipyards. The Navy uses many practices common in other organizations, but reducing planned levels of overtime and increasing the permanent journeyman staff at the public shipyards could cost-effectively hedge against future workload growth.

Joel H. Silbey - The American Party Battle (1999).jpg

The nineteenth century was the heyday of furious contention between American political parties, and Joel Silbey has recaptured the drama and substance of those battles in a representative sampling of party pamphlets. Political parties mapped the landscape of electoral and ideological warfare, constructing images of themselves and of their adversaries that resonate and echo the basic characteristics of America's then reigning sets of ideas. The nature of political controversy, as well as the substance of politics, is embedded in these party documents which both united and divided Americans. Unlike today's party platforms, these pamphlets explicated real issues and gave insight into the society at large. Andrew Jackson's Democrats, Millard Fillmore's Whigs, Abraham Lincoln's Republicans, and other, lesser-known parties are represented here. The pamphlets demonstrate how, for this fifty-year period, political parties were surrogates for American demands and values. Broad in scope, widely circulated, catalysts for heated debate over the decades, these pamphlets are important documents in the history of American politics.

Kimberly Wallace-Sander - Skin Deep, Spirit Strong , The Black Female Body in American Culture (2002).jpg

The essays in Skin Deep, Spirit Strong: The Black Female Body in American Culture chart the ways that the simultaneous interrogation of gender, race, and corporeality shape the construction of black female representation. Kimberly Wallace-Sanders has enlisted a wide variety of scholarly perspectives and critical approaches about the place of black women's bodies within the American cultural consciousness. An impressive gathering of essays and visual art by feminist scholars and artists, the book presents a persuasive argument for broadening the ongoing scholarly conversations about the body. It makes clear that the most salient discourses in poststructuralist and feminist theory are made richer and more complex when the black female body is considered. The collection blends original and classic essays to reveal the interconnections among art, literature, public policy, the history of medicine, and theories about sexuality with regard to bodies that are both black and female. Contributors include Rachel Adams, Elizabeth Alexander, Lisa Collins, Bridgette Davis, Lisa E.Farrington, Anne Fausto-Sterling, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Evelynn Hammonds, Terri Kapsalis, Jennifer L. Morgan, Siobhan B. Somerville, Kimberly Wallace-Sanders, Carla Williams, and Doris Witt.

Leonard A. Cole - The Anthrax Letters, A Medical D etective Story (2003).jpg

On October 5, 2001, Bob Stevens, a 63-year-old photo editor for the tabloid newspaper the Sun, became the first confirmed bioterrorism fatality in the U.S. Over the next several weeks, nearly two dozen people were diagnosed with anthrax, five of whom died. Disentangling a coherent story from the snarl of conflicting reports, multi-agency responses, blaring headlines, empty leads and the shaky scientific data surrounding the anthrax attacks is no simple task, which makes Cole's accomplished book all the more impressive. As an expert on the intersection of politics and terrorism, Cole (The Eleventh Plague) takes the reader on a captivating, no-nonsense tour of America's public health system, where physicians, scientists and administrators work tirelessly to establish protocols and policies, task forces and education programs, emergency response strategies and stockpiles of vital medicines to safeguard the country from a potentially catastrophic bioterror event. The book also supplies the chilling details that the short-lived media flareup failed to convey-such as the durability of anthrax spores, which can lie dormant but remain lethal for hundreds of years; the contamination of massive postal facilities that remain unsafe even after multimillion-dollar clean-up efforts; the difficulties involved in diagnosing many anthrax cases, which can display ambiguous symptoms; and the persistent, residual effects of the disease. Without even a hint of sensationalism, this disquieting but hopeful book skillfully zeros in on the most crucial issues and scientific advances as well as the heroic individuals who averted disaster while under the intense glare of public scrutiny.

Paul Kupperberg - The Alaska Highway (2009).jpg

In early 1942, the first of more than 18,000 U.S. military and civilian workers and countless tons of equipment were shipped across Canada and Alaska to one of the most inhospitable regions in the world. Their mission is to build a 1,500-mile-long highway through the Canadian and Alaskan wildernesses to link remote Fairbanks, Alaska, with the existing U.S. Highway System. Started three months after the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a good highway was needed to access America's northernmost territory should Alaska require extra defense in the event of a Japanese attack via the Aleutian Islands. Work crews had a mere eight months to complete this task, the largest and most complex construction project since the building of the Panama Canal almost 40 years earlier.

Robert Fuller - Naming the Antichrist, The History of an American Obsession (1996).jpg

The Antichrist, though mentioned a mere four times in the Bible, and then only obscurely, has exercised a tight hold on popular imagination throughout history. In Naming the Antichrist, Fuller takes us on a fascinating journey through the dark side of the American religious psyche, from the earliest American colonists right up to contemporary fundamentalists such as Pat Robertson and Hal Lindsey.Fuller begins by offering a brief history of the idea of the Antichrist and its origins in the apocalyptic thought in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and traces the eventual migration of the Antichrist legend across the Atlantic. He shows how the colonists saw Antichrist personified in everyone from native Americans to the Church of England. He looks at the Second Great Awakening in the early nineteenth century, showing how such prominent Americans as Yale president Timothy Dwight saw the work of the Antichrist in phenomena ranging from the French Revolution to Masonry. In the twentieth century, Fuller finds a startling array of hate-mongers, such as the Ku Klux Klan, who drew on apocalyptic imagery in their attacks on Jews, Catholics, blacks, socialists, and others. Finally, he considers contemporary fundamentalist writers such as Hal Lindsey and a host of others who have found Antichrist in the sinister guise of the European Economic Community, feminism, and even supermarket barcodes and fibre optics.

Rod Andrew Jr. - Long Gray Lines, The Southern Mil itary School Tradition, 1839-1915 (2001).jpg

Military training was a prominent feature of higher education across the nineteenth-century South. Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel, as well as land-grant schools such as Texas A&M, Auburn, and Clemson, organized themselves on a military basis, requiring their male students to wear uniforms, join a corps of cadets, and subject themselves to constant military discipline. Several southern black colleges also adopted a military approach.
Challenging assumptions about a distinctive "southern military tradition," Rod Andrew demonstrates that southern military schools were less concerned with preparing young men for actual combat than with instilling in their students broader values of honor, patriotism, civic duty, and virtue. Southerners had a remarkable tendency to reconcile militarism with republicanism, Andrew says, and following the Civil War, the Lost Cause legend further strengthened the link in southerners' minds between military and civic virtue.
Though traditionally black colleges faced struggles that white schools did not, notes Andrew, they were motivated by the same conviction that powered white military schools--the belief that a good soldier was by definition a good citizen.
