The Manhattan Love Suicides are a series of short films by Richard Kern: Stray Dogs, Woman At The Wheel, Thrust In Me, & I Hate You Now. This is a brief description of each-

"Stray Dogs" concerns an artist being followed thru the streets by an obsessive young man (a terrific David Wojnarowicz) who tries to gain his attention. He follows the artist back to his apartment and begins literally tearing himself apart in frustration - at this point the artist laughs at him & begins to sketch his dying body. This is probably my personal favorite in the series.

"Woman At The Wheel" follows a woman who takes her boyfriends (1 at a time) for a drive - but they only spark arguments & insist on taking the wheel. She eventually beats one of them senseless & wrecks the car.

"Thrust In Me", stars Nick Zedd as both the suicidal girl and her thrusting boyfriend. Includes a great cameratrick orgasm of monumental proportions.

"I Hate You Now" features Tommy Turner as a facially deformed drug dealer and Amy Turner as his girlfriend. The film repeatedly taunts the notion of "deformity" & "ugliness" before ending in a serious iron-burn & a barbell suicide.

Two girls are in a sparsely furnished apartment scandily clad and being generally unpleasant to each other. A guy comes in, and they start to engage in, um, fun. Then the fun turns on itself as, uh, you'd have to see it.

But you don't need to. As with all Richard Kern films, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. They're simply variations on being shocking in different ways. Is there symbolism in them? Nothing above the kinds of things a 6th grader would get, and a 6th grader sure as heck shouldn't being seeing this. It's really more fascinating as a documentary of people doing things to/with/on each other.

On the upside, the music is fantastic. Honestly, this is worth watching just for the excellent music (the composer escapes me at the moment). It seems to have very little connection with the film, but definitely works. Imagine Foetus' agro-jazz stuff gone more jazz and you sorta have the idea.

Around the time this was made, I went to a "modern" concert. The "musicians" merely beat some members of the audience with their instruments. There was noise, there were instruments and people calling themselves musicians. Was it music?

Concept art has to be clever and profound, or possibly overwhelming or enchantingly strange. Just giving the audience the finger shouldn't be enough. This is a film only accidentally, a camera only happened to be the handy instrument.

The trouble with pornography is that it tends to view desire strictly as a resident of the body, pure atavism with all intellect shunted into the role of providing the simplest available pretext to grant meaning to the acts of the flesh. This two-dimensional view is especially glaring in S+M porn, which is compressed into simplistic displays of aggression and acceptance, it's participants made caricatures of punishment and supplication. Most of the time, the resulting images seem more a cautionary on why we shouldn't want to see or experience it rather than why we would. Even in a well-meaning [and mainstream] film like Secretary, failure to understand the deeper truer meanings and energies of S+M leads the filmmakers to explain the behaviors of the protagonists in emotional shorthand more suited to an After-School Special.
