A man known as the "Murderer" wanders through the woods. The sound of water flowing deep underground fills his head. Within the sound of the subterranean water flowing through the "id", the realm of the subconscious mind, the "Voice of Someone" becomes audible. The man emerging from the woods was captivated by that voice, engulfed in a raging storm and carried along by the swollen waters of a river until picked up and taken to a small steel factory in a town near the river. In front of that factory, which adjoins a pig farm, an ancient water course has been sealed with a giant spigot. The man is resonant with the "id" water sounds of that sealed water course. Before long, incidents gradually begin to occur that affect the frugal occupants of the factory, until one morning they discover the body of the head of the factory, who has been beaten to death. The perpetrator is a female employee of the factory, and in fact it was her voice that had beckoned that man there. The hatred and sadness that those two had resonated in the realm of the "id" brings about the appearance of the "Humanhog" monster, which emits a rotten stench. Around that time, as if summoned by destiny, the ex-Detective that has been pursuing that man finally arrives in that factory town.

As her absences become longer and her infidelities more blatant, Kurasaki becomes wildly jealous, but also develops a terrific idea for a new novel, with Shizuko as the heroine.

A Korean film has been selected to screen in competition at the Sundance Film Festival next month in Park City, Utah. Director Lim Woo-seong's psychological drama "Vegetarian" was selected from among 1,022 submissions to be one of 14 to compete in the World Cinema Narrative Competition section at the prestigious North American fest.

LIM's feature debut is based on a famous short story by Korean writer Han-gang, and revolves around a sensitive housewife who becomes vegetarian as her relationship with her husband deteriorates, culminating in a liaison with her sister's husband, an artist who paints bodies.

The film drew critical attention at its world premiere at the Pusan International Film Festival last October. Director LIM is currently completing his second feature, titled "Scar". Sundance is to take place January 21- 31, with new festival director John Cooper replacing longtime head, Geoffrey Gilmore.

Roaming around gorgeous countryside in a chauffeur-driven vintage limousine, Lina drapes herself naked across the rear passenger upholstery, making herself available for any fortunate stray hiker the vehicle should happen to pass. Although a grim flashback scene involving a pair of unsavoury truck drivers towards the end offers a psychological explanation for Lina's nymphomania, this seems present merely to appease the conventional viewer who requires everything to be nicely spelled out, unable to handle such an abstract and star-focused approach to the art of film. For the remainder of us, this movie is like your favourite painting brought to life.

Set in Nagasaki in the late 1800s, the film is a bizarre mixture of erotic, historical, and horrific elements aided immeasurably by Takechi's direction and an all-star cast led by Takako Shinozuka as Ayame, a courtesan who attracts the attention of street vendor Kisuke (Satoshi Mashiba) and decides to run away with him to America. Unfortunately, a crazed tattoo artist is obsessed with Ayame's perfect skin as a potential canvas, so he kills Kisuke to keep Ayame in Japan. Later, Ayame is sold to a brothel in Yokohama. Kisuke's ghost possesses her, causing his image to appear tattoo-like on her skin whenever she has sex. Eventually, after much pining and romantic weirdness, Ayame tells the lovesick ghost to get over her and move on to Heaven so she can do her job in peace. Nostalgic and sentimental in the extreme, Oiran may not be exactly what audiences were expecting, but it is a fine entertainment. Seeing as Takechi's battles with the censors from Hakujitsumu and the infamous Kuroi Yuki case to the scandal surrounding his 1981 remake of Hakujitsumu were legendary, it should come as no surprise that the government ratings board insisted on numerous cuts. The bitterness of his battles finally drove the director to hardcore where his unique visions could be fully explored.

It's quite difficult to place 'Present from the Skies' into a well-defined corner. It's an Israeli film, but it does not look too much as other Israeli films. On one hand it is done with a professionalism and story telling skills that very few Israeli films have. It does borrow some elements of the so called 'burekas' comedies - genre inspired from the life of the development towns or suburbs in the 70s or 80s, but it dares to deal with issues related to the life and habits of some of the Israeli social groups in a manner that exceeds many of the self-imposed limits other Israeli creators place on themselves.

The film deals with the Georgian community in Israel, and is half spoken in Georgian, and from this point of view reminds other ethnic films in the world cinema. The way the director Dover Koshashvili - of Georgian origin himself - approaches aspects of the family relations and especially the attitude towards women is of an extreme, almost cruel realism, and all is done with no intention of programmatic social or moral judgment. The director focuses on creating the right atmosphere, depicting a world, and inviting the viewer to judge by himself. Good acting adds to this movie which offers an experience different of all other Israeli movies that you may have seen.
