The visitor is the legendary gangster Wadek Aslanian who was beloved as a latter day Robin Hood. Stephane's husband hires a lawyer, Paul, to defend her. Paul learns many disturbing things about Stephane's sordid past when he starts receiving anonymous letters describing her exploits which included prostitution, performing in porno-movies, and most interestingly having a liaison with Aslanian. The judge is ignorant of his wife's past. Despite her dark and mysterious past, Paul cannot help but fall in love with Stephane.

Brisseau s baroque melodrama has a conventional plot - a beautiful but mysterious femme fatale Stéphanie (Vartan, made-up to look like Kim Novak in Vertigo) is on trial for killing a gangster - but the writer/director attacks his material with a gusto that might have made Douglas Sirk blush. Piccoli is Stéphanie's all trusting magistrate husband, blissfully unaware of her double life or quite how often she's cuckolded him. Karyo is the lawyer defending Stéphanie, and he's also secretly in love with her. There are extravagant courtroom scenes, lavish parties with self-consciously overblown music and swooping camerawork. Between times, Brisseau throws in prurient Tinto Brass-style sex scenes, while mercilessly mocking the bourgeoisie by showing up the absurdity of their legal and social customs. The jolts in style are disconcerting and certain scenes verge on the kitsch, but this is still rich and heady fare.

Film jest prowadzony w sposób iście Rohmerowski – cała akcja opiera się głównie na dialogach, w które warto się wsłuchać. Między kolejnymi zdaniami kryje się cała, potężnie rozbudowana u reżyserki, filozofia życia uczuciowego. Nie znam w kinie nikogo innego, kto tak dokładnie przyjrzałby się kobiecej erosferze. Kto w równie odważny sposób stawiałby tezy, łamał tabu i prowokował. I co najważniejsze, to nie jest kino feministyczne. Jednak silnie kobiece.

While she rests and drinks tea with him, he persuades her to allow him to photograph her in the nude. However, a mouse becomes fascinated with the photographs and in turn teaches the woman an unexpected lesson about eroticism. The man fancies himself an author, and to help him with his latest project, she agrees to take dictation as he spins an unusual tale. As it happens, the story is also unusually long, and in time the manuscript threatens to take over their lives as well as his house. The Herb Of The Rat (aka A Ervo do Rato) was an official selection at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

Nikos Nikolaidis is a director unlike any other, here in Greece. His uncompromised, simple & cynical dialogues, his beautiful photography, extremity and obscenity, his weird "black" humour and somewhat ever present surrealism, all these make him my greatest. Greek cinema generally hasn't had many great moments for many reasons. Nikos Nikolaidis, uncompromised and unwilling to play "the big game" which he has been offered as a mainstream intellectual, for 30 years now and going he has been making powerful & controversial films that deserve more attention from serious cinema fans (both those who like the intellect and those who like it strange & bizarre!

"Ta kurelia tragudane akoma" , his second feature, a hymn to friendship & companion ship, is both cruel and funny, cynical and sweet, about people who have lost all hopes, a surreal tribute to the hopeless and pessimist 'betrayed' people. Neverless the film doesn't ever gets slow and remains quite unpredictable and interesting. All texts in Nikolaidis films are perhaps his best point.

This is a film that would probably be regarded as not appropriate for minors: while Nikolaidis doesn't glorify violence, there seem not to be any visible ethics or morality in his films, another reason he is regarded by some as 'anarchist' and 'angry' director.
