Yasushi Inoue - Tun-huang (2010).jpg

All History - Yasushi Inoue - Tun-huang 2010.jpg
More than a thousand years ago, an extraordinary trove of early Buddhist sutras and other scriptures was secreted away in caves near the Silk Road city of Tun-huang. But who hid this magnificent treasure and why? In Tun-huang, the great modern Japanese novelist Yasushi Inoue tells the story of Chao Hsing-te, a young Chinese man whose accidental failure to take the all-important exam that will qualify him as a high government official leads to a chance encounter that draws him farther and farther into the wild and contested lands west of the Chinese Empire. Here he finds love, distinguishes himself in battle, and ultimately devotes himself to the strange task of depositing the scrolls in the caves where, many centuries later, they will be rediscovered. A book of magically vivid scenes, fierce passions, and astonishing adventures, Tun-huang is also a profound and stirring meditation on the mystery of history and the hidden presence of the past.

Tim Killick - British short fiction in the early n ineteenth century; The rise of the tale (2008).jpg

All History - Tim Killick - British short fiction in the early nineteenth century The rise of the tale 2008.jpg
In spite of the importance of the idea of the 'tale' within Romantic-era literature, short fiction of the period has received little attention from critics. Contextualizing British short fiction within the broader framework of early nineteenth-century print culture, Tim Killick argues that authors and publishers sought to present short fiction in book-length volumes as a way of competing with the novel as a legitimate and prestigious genre. Beginning with an overview of the development of short fiction through the late eighteenth century and analysis of the publishing conditions for the genre, including its appearance in magazines and annuals, Killick shows how Washington Irving's hugely popular collections set the stage for British writers. Subsequent chapters consider the stories and sketches of writers as diverse as Mary Russell Mitford and James Hogg, as well as didactic short fiction by authors such as Hannah More, Maria Edgeworth, and Amelia Opie. His book makes a convincing case for the evolution of short fiction into a self-conscious, intentionally modern form, with its own techniques and imperatives, separate from those of the novel.

Carolyn W. De La L. Oulton - Romantic Friendship i n Victorian Literature (2007).jpg

All History - Carolyn W. De La L. Oulton - Romantic Friendship in Victorian Literature 2007.jpg
Carolyn Oulton recovers the strategies nineteenth-century authors used to justify the ideal of same-sex romantic friendship and the anxieties these strategies reveal. Informed by recent insights into the erotic potential of such relationships, but focused on romantic friendship as an independent and fully formulated ideal, Oulton departs from other critics who view romantic friendship as either nebulous and culturally naive or an invocation of homoerotic responsiveness.By considering both male and female friendships, Oulton uncovers surprising parallels between them in novels and poetry by authors such as Dickens, Tennyson, Disraeli, Charlotte Bronte, and Braddon. Oulton also examines conduct manuals, periodicals, and religious treatises, tracing developments from mid-century to the fin de siecle, when romantic friendship first came under serious attack. Her book is a persuasive challenge to those who view mid-Victorian England, existing in a state of blissful pre-Freudian innocence, as unproblematically accommodating of passionate same-sex relationships.

Michelle M. Dowd, Julie A. Eckerle - Genre and Wom en's Life Writing in Early Modern England (2007).jpg

All History - Michelle M. Dowd, Julie A. Eckerle - Genre and Womens Life Writing in Early Modern England 2007.jpg
By taking account of the ways in which early modern women made use of formal and generic structures to constitute themselves in writing, the essays collected here interrogate the discursive contours of gendered identity in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. The contributors explore how generic choice, mixture, and revision influence narrative constructions of the female self in early modern England. Collectively they situate women's life writings within the broader textual culture of early modern England while maintaining a focus on the particular rhetorical devices and narrative structures that comprise individual texts. Reconsidering women's life writing in light of recent critical trends - most notably historical formalism - this volume produces both new readings of early modern texts (such as Margaret Cavendish's autobiography and the diary of Anne Clifford) and a new understanding of the complex relationships between literary forms and early modern women's 'selves'. This volume engages with new critical methods to make innovative connections between canonical and non-canonical writing; in so doing, it helps to shape the future of scholarship on early modern women.

Malcolm Barber - The Two Cities; Medieval Europe, 1050-1320 (1993).jpg

All History - Malcolm Barber - The Two Cities Medieval Europe, 1050-1320 1993.jpg
The Two Cities is a history of Western Christendom in the high middle ages. Assuming no prior knowledge of the period, it nevertheless seeks to explore the medieval mentality in greater depth than could be gained from a conventional outline of political events. Physical and material conditions, religious belief and organization, political structures, and medieval perceptions of the world, are presented as parts of an integrated whole. Running through the book is the perceived tension, at the heart of the medieval world view, between the spiritual and material sides of men's nature, the two cities of the title. The author's extensive use of primary sources brings character and immediacy to a rich and comprehensive book.

Peter Donald - An Uncounselled King; Charles I and the Scottish Troubles, 1637-1641 (2004).jpg

All History - Peter Donald - An Uncounselled King Charles I and the Scottish Troubles, 1637-1641 2004.jpg
The concept of kingship as Charles I understood it was challenged by the Covenanters in a struggle of protest over the government of Scotland. Although many aspects of this episode have received historical attention, Charles's own role has not hitherto been investigated in detail. Using a large body of newly available evidence, Dr Donald here attempts to redress the balance, and in doing so offers a substantially new perspective on the Scottish troubles in the crisis years of 1637-41. This study sheds light on the processes whereby Charles, with counsel and yet often in spite of it, tried to uphold his case.

All History - Ian Wilson - Lost World of the Kimberley Extraordinar...ry New Glimpses of Australias Ice Age Ancestors 2006.jpg
This provocative anthropological study offers insights into the thousands of paintings found in small, raised caves on cliff faces in the remote and rugged Kimberley Ranges of Northwest Australia. With lithe, graceful, human figures depicted in a fashion altogether different from that of even the oldest traditional art, these rock paintings have astounded experts since their discovery in 1891. This discussion offers intriguing speculation into who the people who created these paintings could be and explains how new dating techniques helped to clear up many unanswered questions. Encapsulating the mystery that still remains about these paintings, this fascinating book will capture the attention of anyone interested in art, art history, or archeology.

Paul Aron, The Spieler Agency - Mysteries in Histo ry; From Prehistory to the Present (2005).jpg

All History - Paul Aron, The Spieler Agency - Mysteries in History From Prehistory to the Present 2005.jpg
This work is an engaging exploration of the process of historical research, following historians as they search for solutions to the greatest mysteries of all time. Most people see historians as denizens of dusty stacks of documents, producing dry prose. This book shows that historians are closer to Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones. Examples from ancient times to modern, from Neanderthals and Noah's Ark to Amelia Earhart and JFK, show how historians work out disputes and solve mysteries. Award-winning author Paul Aron takes readers on a journey through great historical mysteries through the ages. Entertaining in themselves, the stories also show that history is not merely living, but lively. The reader who comes to the book thinking history is boring will leave with a changed outlook with regard to both the subject matter and the process of writing history. Each chapter is a carefully and thoroughly researched presentation not of popularized accounts, but of valid historical scholarship. Chronologically arranged the essays show the historical process in action. For each disputed historical point, theories arise, become standard wisdom, and then are revised as additional information becomes available. This book reveals the mechanics of that process, including spirited debate, swashbuckling archeology, and the application of modern science to ancient questions.

Paul Virilio - Bunker Archaeology (2008).jpg

All History - Paul Virilio - Bunker Archaeology 2008.jpg
Out of print for almost a decade we are thrilled to bring back one of our most requested hard-to-find titles—philosopher and cultural theorist Paul Virilio's Bunker Archeology. In 1994 we published the first English-language translation of the classic French edition of 1975 which accompanied an exhibition of Virilio's photographs at the Centre Pompidou. In Bunker Archeology urbanist Paul Virilio turns his attention—and camera—to the ominous yet strangely compelling German bunkers that lie abandoned along the coast of France. These ghostly reminders of destruction and oppression prompted Virilio to consider the nature of war and existence in relation to both World War II and contemporary times. Virilio discusses fortresses and military space in general as well as the bunkers themselves including an examination of the role of Albert Speer Hitler's architect in the rise of the Third Reich.

All History - Bard Maeland, Paul Otto Brunstad - Enduring Military Boredom From 1750 to the Present 2009.jpg
It is often said that war is 5% horror and 95% boredom. In this sense, military boredom is historically enduring as well as personally enduring for the soldiers who have to endure it. This book contributes to a deeper understanding historically, empirically and theoretically of the complex phenomenon of boredom in a military context.

All History - Phillip Sipiora, James S. Baumlin - Rhetoric and Kairos Essays in History, Theory, and Praxis 2002.jpg
This collection offers the first comprehensive discussion of the history, theory, and pedagogical applications of kairos, a seminal and recently revised concept of classical rhetoric. Augusto Rostagni, James L. Kinneavy, Richard Leo Enos, John Poulakos, and John E. Smith are among the international list of scholars who explore the Homeric and literary origins of kairos, the technologies of time-keeping in antiquity, the role of right-timing in Hippocratic medicine, the improvisations of Gorgias, as well as the uses of kairos in Isocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and the New Testament. Broad in its scope, the book also examines the distinctive philosophies of time reflected in Renaissance Humanism, Nineteenth-Century American Transcendentalism, Oriental art and ritual, and the application of kairos to contemporary philosophy, ethics, literary criticism, rhetorical theory, and composition pedagogy.

Leslie C. Peltier - Starlight Nights; The Adventur es of a Star-Gazer (2007).jpg

All History - Leslie C. Peltier - Starlight Nights The Adventures of a Star-Gazer 2007.jpg
A classic wonderful book by Leslie C Peltier and forward by David H Levy. 240 pages and a few nice family pictures. An easy read and can be read in 1 day but DONT. Here is a book to savor and take your time with. There are many astronomy books on how to find stars and explaining them but here is a book on the love a man has and the why he is interested in Astronomy.

Peltier was a giant among amateur astronomers with 12 comets, 6 novas and 132,000 variable star observations. Remember these discoveries were in the early 1900s to mid 1900s before CCD cameras, computer, assisted astronomy software, imaging and giant 30 inch plus amateur scopes. His first telescope was a 2 inch refractor.

We see him growing up as a small boy on the farm and his love of reading and all forms of nature and the good times he and his family have with little money and much love. There was no electric, running water or indoor plumbing. Typical rural farm early 1900s living.A much simpler time.

Eventually he makes his own mount for his scope on the family farm. Also his father and him build Leslie an observatory on the farm for his later 4 inch refractor but he has to send this telescope back to the Variable Star Association he belongs to. However they send him a wide field 6 inch refractor that is good to find comets with. Later he marries Dottie his sweetheart and they go to the southwest. Together they share Dottie's love of Archeology and Leslie continues his love of Astronomy with more discoveries. Later Leslie gets a 12 inch Clark Refractor donated to him. After repairing it he gets spectacular views.

Here is a very humble man who loved the simple life, his family and really had no need for the spotlight.

I'm an amateur astronomer of over 40 years and have a 20 inch telescope, the best eyepieces, mallincam camera, computer, software etc. Peltier had none of these to assist his discoveries. The great discoveries and shear volume of his discoveries with much simpler equipment is truly remarkable.

I'm sorry I never had the opportunity to met him. I too have bought an old farm/ranch where I plan to have an observatory built for my telescopes to explore the heavens. Someday after my passing, Leslie Peltier may we meet in the heavens to explore its wonders. I'll meet you at the HorseHead nebula.

Buy the book and slowly read it and savor it. You wont find another book that expresses such love as to why to view the stars and comets.

All History - Neil Asher Silberman - Between Past and Present archa...ology, and nationalism in the modern Middle East 1989.jpg
Eyeballing the ruins of Masada and Troy and puzzling over the identity of the Hyksos invaders of ancient Egypt, archeologist Silberman explores how interpretations of archeological discoveries are often shaped by nationalistic feelings, and political and ethnic rivalries. "Written with modesty and charm, this is an outspoken analysis of the politicization of archeology," judged PW.

David Christian - Maps of Time; An Introduction to Big History (2005).jpg

All History - David Christian - Maps of Time An Introduction to Big History 2005.jpg
An introduction to a new way of looking at history, from a perspective that stretches from the beginning of time to the present day, Maps of Time is world history on an unprecedented scale. Beginning with the Big Bang, David Christian views the interaction of the natural world with the more recent arrivals in flora and fauna, including human beings.
Cosmology, geology, archeology, and population and environmental studies--all figure in David Christian's account, which is an ambitious overview of the emerging field of "Big History." Maps of Time opens with the origins of the universe, the stars and the galaxies, the sun and the solar system, including the earth, and conducts readers through the evolution of the planet before human habitation. It surveys the development of human society from the Paleolithic era through the transition to agriculture, the emergence of cities and states, and the birth of the modern, industrial period right up to intimations of possible futures. Sweeping in scope, finely focused in its minute detail, this riveting account of the known world, from the inception of space-time to the prospects of global warming, lays the groundwork for world history--and Big History--true as never before to its name.
