Battleground Europe - Jack Horsfall, Nigel Cave - Flesquieres; Cambrai (2003).jpg

All History - Battleground Europe - Jack Horsfall, Nigel Cave - Flesquieres Cambrai 2003.jpg
The third in a trilogy of books, the others being Cambrai -The Right Hook and Bourlon Wood by the same authors covering the battle for Cambrai in November 1917. It covers the defence against the German counter strike, the defence of the Flesquieres Salient against the Kaiserschlact in March 1918 and its recapture in Sept/Oct 1918 all key elements in great Allied advance to victory. This book and guide to the Battle for Flesquieres Ridge tells of the onslaught by 470 tanks and infantry battalions which smashed through the Hindenburg line to the great surprise of the Germans who thought it invincible. So successful was the initial assault that for the first time in the war church bells rang out and the face of land warfare was changed forever. The story illustrates the indomitable spirit of British infantry who in spite being outnumbered and outgunned and frustrated by political interference still managed to thwart Ludendorff's last drive for the Channel Ports. They were then in a position to force him back eastwards, breaking through the reinforced Hindenburg Line once again before final victory in November 1918.

Derek G. Neal - The Masculine Self in Late Medieva l England (2008).jpg

All History - Derek G. Neal - The Masculine Self in Late Medieval England 2008.jpg
What did it mean to be a man in medieval England? Most would answer this question by alluding to the power and status men enjoyed in a patriarchal society, or they might refer to iconic images of chivalrous knights. While these popular ideas do have their roots in the history of the aristocracy, the experience of ordinary men was far more complicated.

Marine Nationale - L AGENAIS 1956 (1956).jpeg

All History - Marine Nationale - L AGENAIS 1956 1956.jpeg

Min Wild - Christopher Smart and satire; 'Mary Mid night' and the Midwife (2008).jpg

All History - Min Wild - Christopher Smart and satire Mary Midnight and the Midwife 2008.jpg
Min Wild's adroit and witty scholarship is a revelation. Her analysis of identity, satire, politics, and gender in The Midwife, Christopher Smart's explosive monthly magazine of 1750-53, makes for a compelling case study of commercial authorship and imaginative disruption in eighteenth-century print culture, and brilliantly dispels the assumption that journalism and satire stagnated after the fall of Walpole. Wild adds a major new dimension to our understanding of Smart: not only, as Donald Davie famously proposed, the greatest English poet between Pope and Wordsworth, but also one of the most creative, and creatively subversive, journalists in the new age of periodical print. Thomas Keymer, University of Toronto, Canada Christopher Smart and Satire explores the lively and idiosyncratic world of satire in the eighteenth-century periodical, focusing on the way that writers adopted personae to engage with debates taking place during the British Enlightenment. Taking Christopher Smart's audacious and hitherto underexplored Midwife, or Old Woman's Magazine (1750-1753) as her primary source, Min Wild provides a rich examination of the prizewinning Cambridge poet's adoption of the bizarre, sardonic 'Mary Midnight' as his alter-ego. Her analysis provides insights into the difficult position in which eighteenth-century writers were placed, as ideas regarding the nature and functions of authorship were gradually being transformed. At the same time, Wild also demonstrates that Smart's use of 'Mary Midnight' is part of a tradition of learned wit, having an established history and characterized by identifiable satirical and rhetorical techniques. Wild's engagement with her exuberant source materials establishes the skill and ingenuity of Smart's often undervalued, multilayered prose satire. As she explores Smart's use of a peculiarly female voice, Wild offers us a picture of an ingenious and ribald wit whose satirical overview of society explores, overturns, and anatomises questions of gender, politics, and scientific and literary endeavors.

All History - Alan ODay - Reactions To Irish Nationalism, 1865-1914 2003.jpg
Irish nationalism and responses to it played an important part in british politics between the rise of Fenianism and the Great War. The first part of the book indentifies an number of key points contributing to the make-up and success of Nationalism; in particular the attitude and influence of the Roman Catholic church is examined. The second part deals with liberal attempts to solve the problem, culminating in Home Rule. Finally the very different reaction of Unionism is seen from three angles.

All History - F.M.L. Thompson - The University of London and the World of Learning, 1836-1986 2003.jpg
THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AND THE WORLD Learning invites us to reflect upon the changing functions of the University from Victorian times. The volume consists of an introductory chapter and eleven essays by distinguished academics. Drawn from the whole spectrum of university faculties, these experts discuss the University of London's contributions to their fields of learning from the institution's founding in 1836 to its sesquicentennial. The first chapters explore aspects of general institutional history as these relate to the organization, transmission, and creation of knowledge. F. M. L. Thompson provides a splendid introduction, sketching the constitutional history of the University and the organization of its faculties; J. Mordaunt Crook offers a sparkling and highly informative survey of its architectural history; Gillian Sutherland writes interestingly of its contribution to women's higher education. The following chapters examine the his. tory of individual university faculties. Thompson considers the development of the humanities in London, W. L.

All History - James Wyatt Cook - Encyclopedia of Ancient Literature 2008.jpg
Grade 10 Up—A fitting supplement to George Thomas Kurian's Timetables of World Literature (Facts On File, 2003), this collection of essays focuses on works in ancient Greek and Latin but also includes a fair representation of Chinese literature. The literature of other languages, including Japanese and Sanskrit, is explored as well (an opening listing shows "Writers Covered, by Language of Composition").

Entries include authors, titles, and themes and literary forms. Works such as Julius Caesar's The Civil Wars, Virgil's Aeneid, and Ovid's Metamorphoses are discussed book by book. Theological texts are well represented, with entries on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Hebrew Bible, and the teachings of Buddha, among others. Students will appreciate the accessible summaries as well as the bibliographies that are appended to most articles.—Carol Fazioli, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA

Victoria Kahn - Wayward Contracts; The Crisis of P olitical Obligation in England, 1640-1674 (2004).jpg

All History - Victoria Kahn - Wayward Contracts The Crisis of Political Obligation in England, 1640-1674 2004.jpg
Why did the language of contract become the dominant metaphor for the relationship between subject and sovereign in mid-seventeenth-century England? In Wayward Contracts, Victoria Kahn takes issue with the usual explanation for the emergence of contract theory in terms of the origins of liberalism, with its notions of autonomy, liberty, and equality before the law.
Drawing on literature as well as political theory, state trials as well as religious debates, Kahn argues that the sudden prominence of contract theory was part of the linguistic turn of early modern culture, when government was imagined in terms of the poetic power to bring new artifacts into existence. But this new power also brought in its wake a tremendous anxiety about the contingency of obligation and the instability of the passions that induce individuals to consent to a sovereign power. In this wide-ranging analysis of the cultural significance of contract theory, the lover and the slave, the tyrant and the regicide, the fool and the liar emerge as some of the central, if wayward, protagonists of the new theory of political obligation. The result is must reading for students and scholars of early modern literature and early modern political theory, as well as historians of political thought and of liberalism.
