The Soviet Army was one of the first in the world to experiment with large tank forces, the first (and nearly the only) army to have a coherent strategic doctrine for using large tank forces, and had the largest tank park in the world when most other armies, including the German, were just starting to acquire tanks. Despite this promising beginning, by 1941 the Red Army's tank forces were so unorganized, untrained, poorly maintained, and spottily equipped that 90% of the largest tank force in the world was massacred in less than 6 weeks.
The story of the Red Armor really starts before there were more than a handful of tanks anywhere in Russia. Unlike the rest of Europe, Russia's military doctrine was not based on her experiences in World War One, but more on the peculiar experience of the Russian Civil War. While military thinking in France, Britain, and Germany tended to be dominated by the WWI problem of breaking through an enemy line - the classic problem of the trenches and basically a tactical or operational question - the Soviets focused on how to strike deep enough to destroy the entire enemy force - the strategic question of how to end the war.
Soviet military thinkers like Frunze, Svechin, Triandafilov, and Issar-son, hammered out a doctrine which, in its simplest form, went like this:
1. Break through the enemy line, by massing enough artillery and infantry to overwhelm the defense at a decisive point
2. Widen the gap with engineers so that mobile forces can use it.
3. Send in horse cavalry and mechanized forces to strike deep into the enemy rear; ideally all the way to his capital to end the war.
Like other armies, the Red Army had a number of tasks for armor to perform. Unlike other armies, the Russians could build enough tanks so that they could try all the various ways of using tanks - almost every type of unit in the Red Army could have its own armor, tailored to its needs. Some of the requirements were the same as those in, for example, the British and French armies: tanks to support infantry and cavalry. Others were peculiar to the Soviets: tanks to support paratroops and amphibious operations.

The Soviet T-80 Standard Tank was the last tank fielded before the Soviet collapse, and the most controversial. Like the US M1 Abrams tank, the T-80 used a turbine power plant rather than a conventional diesel. Although the design was blessed with some of the most sophisticated armament, fire controls, and multi-layer armor ever fielded on a Soviet tank, its power plant remained a source of considerable trouble through its career. It saw very little service in the Chechen War, though T-80 tanks were used in some of the regional conflicts in the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.

The tanks used during the Spanish Civil War are not often examined in any great detail, and are often labeled as little more than test vehicles in a convenient proving ground before World War II. But, with groundbreaking research, armor expert Steven J Zaloga has taken a fresh look at the tanks deployed in Spain, examining how future tanks and armored tactics were shaped and honed by the crews' experiences, and how Germany was able to benefit from these lessons while their Soviet opponents were not.
Based on recently uncovered records of Soviet tankers in Spain and rare archival accounts, this book describes the various tanks deployed in Spain, including the PzKpfw I and the T-26.

The content of the book is excellent covering the m10 tank destoryer early and late types, sp, 17pdr m10 mk2 achilles variant, m18 76mm hellcat tank destroyer, m36 90mm gmc, m3 75mm gmc with a smatering of m6 37mm gmc. There are many quality photographs inside both in action photos and some photos of factory fresh m10 and achilles, the colour plates are especially nice and will surprise some people with how recently world war 2 era tank destroyers were used in combat. There is ample inspiration for the diorama builder contained in these nice photos and colour plates. The book covers tank destroyers in north africa, the italian campaign, france, battle of the bulge, the pacific and post war use.

By January 1942, the mechanized forces with which the Soviet Union began the war a bare six months earlier were gone. Of the mass of tank, mechanized, and motorized rifle divisions that went into battle, a handful of survivors were left. Of the mechanized corps, the largest tank formations in the world in June 1941, not one remained. Of the 22,600 tanks in the army on 22 June, 20,500 had been lost. No other army in the world had such a huge investment in mechanized forces before the war. No other army had lost such a huge amount of armor in so short a time - nor would any army, even the Soviet Army, ever suffer such a loss again.
If there was a bright spot in this cavalcade of disaster, it was that throughout 1941's melancholy medley of massacres at the hands of the better trained and better-led German panzer force, the Soviet Army had managed to keep some tank forces in battle. At the very end of the year, in fact, the surviving armor spearheaded counter-attacks at Tikhvin in the north, Rostov in the south, and a counter-attack at Moscow 's suburbs that turned into a major winter counter-offensive. This resurrection was made possible by 'de-evolving" the tank force back to its roots in the 1930s'. The Soviets had started with mechanized brigades , and they went back to the separate tank brigade and tank battalion in late 1941.
There were 76 tank brigades and 100 separate tank battalions in the Soviet Army by the end of 1941, plus 7 tank divisions - 4 in the Far East, where almost 3000 tanks remained to keep a wary eye on the Japanese in Manchuria. On 1 January 1942 there were 7700 tanks in the Soviet Army tank units, but of these only 1400 (600 KV, 800 T-34) were modern heavy or medium tanks, while 6300 were light tanks, and the majority of those either obsolete T-26 and BT types in the Far East, or new T-60 tanks mounting only a 20mm cannon.
While the winter battles west of Moscow were waged throughout January and February 1942 by a steadily-dwindling armored and infantry force (the Soviets lost 1,150,000 men and 1386 tanks between December 1941 and April 1942 in the fighting west and northwest of Moscow) , the Soviet High Command began a massive build-up of tank forces. This process would continue to the end of the war and beyond, and its progress is very nearly the story of the progress of the Soviet Army from Moscow to Berlin.

Hero of the Soviet Union Dmitriy Loza has carefully crafted his World War II experiences with American-provided Sherman tanks into a highly readable memoir. Between the fall of 1943 and August 1945, Loza fought in the Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. He commanded a tank battalion during much of this period and had three Shermans shot out from under him. Commanding The Red Army's Sherman Tanks is the first available detailed examination of the Red Army's exploitation of American war material during World War II and provides firsthand testimony on tactical command decisions, group objectives and how they were accomplished. It took the fall of the Soviet Empire before first-hand information like this could become part of military studies materials here in the west. James Gebhard's translation has made Dmitriy Loza's military memoirs easily accessible to both military professionals, World War II buffs, and nonspecialist general readers alike.

In America's island-hopping war against Japan, the U.S. Marines were our cutting edge. Yet, until now, little has been written about the desperate combats fought by the Marines' own spearheads - their tanks. It is a story of trial and error, incredible courage, and finally, triumph.

In the early island campaigns, Marine tankers went into battle inexperienced and inadequately trained. In a series of costly battles and jungle campaigns - Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bouganville, Cape Gloucester, Tarawa, Marianas, Peleliu, Saipan and Okinawa - Marine tankers proved beyond doubt that they were essential in achieving victory. Despite suffering sometimes staggering losses, the Marines and their tanks eventually crushed fierce Japanese resistance.

The Wespe was designed in 1942 as an interim solution, to equip the Panzer- and Panzergrenadierdivisions with a highly mobile self-propelled artillery and was planned to serve, until specially designed vehicles for the Panzer-artillerie would become available.
