Since the advent of airmobile warfare, there have been numerous attempts to support paratroopers with attached armored vehicles. This book tells the story of the US experience with air-mobile tanks, starting with their efforts in World War II. However, full success was not achieved until the production of the M551 Sheridan. The history of this tank provides the focal point of this book, highlighting the difficulties of combining heavy firepower in a chassis light enough for airborne delivery. The book examines its controversial debut in Vietnam, and its subsequent combat history in Panama and Operation Desert Storm. It rounds out the story by examining the failed attempts to replace the Sheridan with other armored vehicles.

The Gulf War bore witness to a number of deadly encounters between these two great adversaries. Heavily armored, highly mobile and capable of killing at over 2500m the M1 Abrams is, to this day, a veritable fighting machine. Superior to both Iraq's Soviet era T-55 and T-62 tanks, nearly all sources claim that no Abrams tank has ever been destroyed by enemy fire. Despite entering service in 1980, the M1 Abrams remained untested in combat until the Gulf War in 1991, where it was to be confronted by its archenemy the Iraqi-assembled Soviet-designed T-72. Entering production in 1971, the T-72 arguably outstripped its contemporaries in a balance of mobility, protection and firepower. By the time of Operation Desert Storm, however, the tables had turned and the tank suffered due to low quality ammunition and poorly trained crews. In this fascinating study, Steven Zaloga pits these two great fighting machines against one another, plotting the development of the Cold War until both tanks met in combat in the deserts of Iraq and Kuwait.

Since the Second World War, the Mid East has been the region that has seen the most extensive conflicts involving armored forces. Indeed, the Arab-Israeli wars have sometimes involved tank battles on a scale that rivaled the colossal encounters at El Alamein or Kursk in World War II. The reasons are both geographic and historic. Desert terrain such as the Sinai has favored mechanized warfare. In addition, the local conflicts in the region became entangled with broader world political developments. The 1948 and 1956 wars in the region were linked to the drives for decolonialization in the developing world; the 1967 and 1973 wars were enmeshed in Cold War tensions. These links to broader global conflicts have meant that the armies in the region have had access to the arsenals of the Great Powers, acting as their surrogates in some cases.
The tragic roots of the conflict in the region are not difficult to trace. A revived Jewish presence in Palestine was the outcome of the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe. The Arab countries in the region, trying to escape colonial bondage with Britain and France, regarded the Jewish presence as another case of illegitimate European interference in the region. The animosities spawned in the first war in 1948 provided the bitter seed for four decades of war in the region.

This book is the second volume in a series on armored warfare in the Mid-East over the past several decades. The central focus of these books are the wars involving Israel. Other major conflicts in the region, notably the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, are outside the scope of this series. The coverage of this volume is somewhat different than the preceding volume. The first volume covered four major wars, fought in the ideal tank country of the Sinai desert. During the period covered in this book, Israel has been involved in only one major war involving its armored force, the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. All of its fighting during this period has been in the hilly regions of the Levant which are not as suitable for large scale tank operations, and tanks did not play as central a role as in previous wars. Much of the fighting in Lebanon has taken place between various Lebanese militias, and this book provides a unique record of the unusual assortment of equipment used in the civil war fighting. Since the 1982 war, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) has been involved in many small scale actions in southern Lebanon. These have been anti-guerrilla operations rather than conventional war. Nevertheless they have usually involved the employment of armored vehicles. This book examines the shift from the IDF's tank-heavy force prior to 1973 to the more balanced mechanized force which continues to evolve to this day.
