NATO's conception of warfare - combined arms fighting on the battlefield - is marked by the combination and cooperation of the firepower and mobility of battalion-, brigade-, and division-scale units. Another factor is the capability to destroy the mobility of hostile forces by barrage and obstacles. Modern mechanized infantry and armored units are dependent on artillery protection. Self-propelled guns are an important element of this concept.

Modern artillery weapon systems, such as the British AS 90, the French GCT AUF-1, the American M109A6 Paladin, and the German Panzerhaubitze PzH 2000 have multi-role requirements - fire support against hostile elements on the frontline, ahead of their own combat units, and fire against hostile follow-on forces and artillery positions - and hostile control, support and air-defense positions have become targets for today's modern artillery systems.

The authors Carl Schulze and Walter Bohm bring us striking photos of the four modern NATO self-propelled guns in action in Germany, Kosovo and Bosnia. The book is divided into four chapters, each chapter dedicated to one self-propelled gun, with a color plate showing camouflage scheme and markings.

The focus of this book is the 5-view 1/35 scale plans of the massive PzH 2000.

The British Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) was formed more than 60 years ago. The units of the RAC made their contribution to the end of the Cold War by fighting in the Gulf War, keeping peace in Bosnia and Kosovo, and supporting civil authority at home in Northern Ireland. The RAC, which provides the tank force to the British Army, is today composed of eight Challenger 1 and 2 regiments.
When the British Army needed a replacement for the Chieftain tank fleet, it chose the ill-fated Shir Iran 2 MBT which was developed for Iran. Modifications were made and the new improved version was named Challenger. The first Challenger 1s were delivered to the British Army in 1983. The Challenger 1 is armed with the L11A5 120mm rifled gun, weighted 62 tons, and has a crew of four. During the Gulf War, Challenger tanks destroyed 300 enemy main battle tanks and an unknown number of armored vehicles.
Further modifications to the Challenger resulted in the Challenger 2 which has up to date armor, mobility, firepower, and fire control technology. The main weapon is the easy to handle 120mm L30 Charm Gun. The first Challenger 2s were delivered to the RAC in 1998 and a total of 386 Challenger 2s will equip the British Army by the year 2002.

Considered the German Army s most important armored half-track in WWII, the Sd.Kfz.251 allowed the infantry to keep up with the Heer's fast armored elements. The vehicle came in 4 models and 23 variants, but the Ausf.D was the most produced model. In fact, Ausf.Ds represented nearly 70 percent of Sd.Kfz.251s built during wartime. The type's simplified design was the main contributor to this variant being produced in such substantial numbers, and the Ausf.D was the first of the 251s to have stowage bins built into the sides of the half track. This mass-produced, streamlined vehicle truly proved its worth in WWII and saw action on every front. Illustrated with over 150 color photographs, detailed line drawings, and 8 colored profiles. From a scale modeler's viewpoint, the book is a goldmine of information and inspiration. The photos are large, in color, and extremely vivid and clear, with new details popping out at you each time you look at them. Especially useful are the many views of the complex turret bustle rack with the "ball and chain" armor, and the often neglected turret top. The only area not covered at all is the bottom of the hull. The text is well-written and supports the photos very well. Most of the pages are dedicated to the Mk2 and Mk2B versions, with only a few covering the Mk3.

The M2/M3 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle was developed to replace the M113. With increased firepower compared to its predecessor, the Bradley is also superior in mobility and armor protection. It has a two-man stabilized turret as a platform for a 25mm Bushmaster chin gun, a M240 co-axial MG, and a two-tube TOW launcher with a seven-man dismount team.

The M2A2/M3A2 Bradley went into service with the 3d INF and 1st INF in 1989/90. It played a major role in the ground war for the liberation of Kuwait during Operation "Desert Storm" in 1991. During the Gulf War, the Bradley fleet proved to be very reliable. Only 3 vehicles were destroyed by enemy fire, with 17 vehicles by friendly fire. As a result of "Desert Storm", an improvement program for the Bradley begun. These modified vehicles received the code M2A2 ODS/M3A2 ODS.

The authors Walter Bohm and Peter Siebert are regular contributors to Concord's range of modern armor books. Most photos were taken in Germany, where the Bradleys roam through the countryside as will. There are also photos of Bradleys serving in Kosovo. A section is devoted to Bradley variants and special markings.

Horst Riebenstahl byl v letech 1941 až 1945 příslušníkem tankových vojsk a až do konce 2. světové války sloužil jako poddůstojník a řidič tanku v 1. tankovém pluku, který byl v době míru dislokován v Erfurtu. V letech 1943-1945 pak řídil tank Panther, s nímž bojoval na jižním úseku východní fronty. Po válce začal sbírat fotografie tankových jednotek se zvláštním zaměřením na 1. tankový pluk, z nichž nakonec sestavil tuto zajímavou a jedinečnou publikaci.

The M2/M3 BRADLEY, which effectiveness as a true combat fighting vehicle cou ld only be tested in t he recent Culf war, was t he first vehicle actually designed to carry t roops to land f r om) the battlefield and allowing them to fight from inside t he protective hull , instead of having to dismount and fight a battle in the open and facing the atrocities of nuclear and bio logical warfare.
The Vie t nam war clea rly demonstrated t he need for a MICFV (Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle) such as the Bradley which bene atted from early trials with the XM734 (an M113 with pistol po rts) and the M113 ACAV in t hat war.
As is often the case, combat vehicles are developed in anticipation of enemy desig ns. With t he Soviet BMP infant ry fighting vehicle already in serv ice and the BTR·GO being developed, performance capabi lities had to match, or better still , outclass theirs, Next to that, the new design should be able to keep up in speed with its future "Brot her in Arms", t he M1 ABRAMS tank , one of t he crttenas where an updated version Of the M113 would fail.
In it ial pla ns t o acquire a li censed -built German MARDER were dropped on t he basis of rather poor armor protection, inadequate fire power and high cost. After a lot of turmoil within the Defense Department on t his new MICV desig n, FMC corporation was awarded a development contract fo r eig ht init ial prototypes, which it delivered for testing in 1978. Named in horror of t he famous WWII ge nera l, omar N. BRADLEV, seve ra l hundred M2 (Infant ry) and M3 rcavatrvi MICV's were to be delivered to units both statestoe and overseas from 1982onwards.
