Although the Army was generally satisfied with the M41 Walker Bulldog tank, it was decided during late 1952 to begin development of a new vehicle to fill an Army requirement for an air transportable/deployable light tank. While the M41 was capable of being carried by existing transport aircraft it was not capable of being dropped by parachute.
The Korean War had underscored the need for the Army to be able to rapidly deploy forces to trouble spots on a moments notice. To meet this requirement a lighter, smaller tank that could be airlifted into combat was needed. While efforts were made late in the M41's production run to upgrade its armament nothing could be done to reduce its overall weight and size. This led to the Army's decision to develop a totally new vehicle.
The first vehicle the Army examined was a proposal from Cadillac, designated the 171. Armed with a 76mm cannon, this design was smaller, lighter and less expensive than the Bulldog. Lightly armored, the 171 had a relatively conventional layout In the event, the Army decided not to issue a production contact.

The history of the Sherman tank in service with the Israeli Defense forces began only a few minutes following the departure of the last British soldier from the ramp at Haifa harbor which at that time ended 30 years of British mandate in Palestine.
it was on 14 May. 1948. when technicians of the "HACANA" entered the former British camp at "TlRA" in the south of HAIFA, with the task of evaluating the possibility of assembling one or more Sherman tanks from the hulls and turrets found on the grounds.
The first Sherman tank that entered service in the newly formed Israeli Defense Force was an M4A2 with a welded hull and sheet metal side skirts. This particular tank was nicknamed "TAMAR" which was written on both sides of the turret in traditional Hebrew script.
The new Israeli Army decided to purchase as many AF.V.'s as possible from surplus stocks from the U.S.Army both in Europe and the Pacific, a decision implemented by a limited budgetary envelope.
A small quantity of Sherman M4A1's with 75mm gun and M4A3's with 105mm Howitzer gun were purchased from U.S. camps in Italy and the Philipines. The holes drilled through the barrels to demilitarize the guns were sealed and welded by IDF technicians (who had no previous experience) upon which the tanks were distributed among different fighting units with the famous 7th Armored Brigade receiving the batch of the available tanks. After the Independence War. more Shermans were purchased from surplus sources around the world. This eventually initiated a long period of Sherman service with the IDF which spanned 40 years and has not ended yet.

A specialist on armoured vehicles has produced this book on tank technology. Richard M. Ogorkiewicz examines the major aspects of tank design, from the ballistics of tank guns and fire control systems, tank engines, steering systems and suspensions to the various types of armour. He also examines the impact of guided missiles on tank development, different facets of mobility and cross country performance, and innovations such as electromagnetic and thermal guns and active armour. The technology of tanks is put into perspective by an outline of the evolution of tanks and an up-to-date review of their development throughout the world - from the USA and USSR through to new developments in Brazil and South Korea.

This book is a follow on to an earlier Concord book, T-72 (1004) that was first published in 1989. It brings the story up to date with coverage of the many new versions of this famous tank.

The T-72 is the most widely produced main battle tank in the world today, and is being manufactured in 5 countries in a remarkable number of variants. In view of the bad reputation that the T-72 had received in the 1991 Gulf War and in Chechnya, the Russian plant renamed the newest versions of the T-72 as the T-90. A lot of variants are being developed in both the T-72 and T-90, including main battle tank, combat support vehicles, and special purpose vehicles.

Among the T-72 and T-90 variants featured in this book are T-72S, T-72 Banan, T-72AG, T-72MP, PT-91, T-72M2, T-72M4, T-72 Ajeya, M-95, T-90, T-90S, T-90M, BMPT, A-40, TOS-1, BMR-3, BMR-3M, IMR-2MA, IMR-3MA, MID, MTU-72, BREM-1, and VT-72B. There are many spectacular action shots of the different variants in action, and there are close-up interior shots of the T-90 for the modelers.
