Thierry Groensteen, Brussels, Belgium, is a prominent comics scholar and author of numerous books including The System of Comics and Comics and Narration, both published by University Press of Mississippi. He has held a number of prestigious positions over the years: editor of Les Cahiers de la bande dessinée; director of the comics museum housed in the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image in Angoulême, where he is now a project director and curator; editor in chief of 9ème Art; founder and editor of a comics collection for Actes Sud and lecturer on the comics masters course at the École européenne supérieure de l'image in Angoulême. Ann Miller, Oxford, United Kingdom, is University Fellow in French at the University of Leicester. Miller is joint editor of European Comic Art. She is author of Reading Bande Dessinée: Critical Approaches to French-language Comic Strip and coeditor of Textual Visual Selves: Photography, Film and Comic Art in French Autobiography and The French Comics Theory Reader.

Livre à l'épaisseur impressionnante, au format horizontal, intelligemment servi par une taille qui reste raisonnable et l'absence d'une couverture cartonnée rigide, laquelle aurait encore accru la masse et l'encombrement de l'objet. Lorsque l'on prend L'Encyclopédie historique du journal Tintin-Kuifje entre les mains, on perçoit immédiatement le poids de l'ouvrage, mais celui-ci reste manipulable.
À l'intérieur, les plus de 700 pages sont très majoritairement imprimées en monochrome, mais l'éditeur a choisi de substituer un marron sombre au noir. Assez élégante, cette teinte évoque avec nostalgie un temps passé que l'on regrette, à l'instar du sépia. Mais elle est également moins contrastée sur le blanc du papier, et donc un peu moins lisible. Signalons une petite quarantaine de pages intégralement en quadrichromie, disposées en ouverture et en fermeture du volume ; l'auteur en profite pour multiplier les illustrations (portraits des principaux héros des séries du journal, couvertures des albums publiées par les Éditions du Lombard, etc.).

L’ouvrage peut être segmenté en trois grands ensembles, quitte à prendre quelques libertés avec le découpage de la table des matières. Un premier moment, courant sur une centaine de pages, vise à donner un aperçu de l'histoire du magazine de BD. Il procède notamment en reprenant une série d'interviews réalisées avec les rédacteurs en chef successifs du journal. Un second temps, courant sur environ 300 pages, prend la forme d'un dictionnaire des auteurs et des séries du Journal de Tintin. Le déroulés des auteurs (dessinateurs et scénaristes) présents dans les pages du journal occupe près de 250 pages. Ils y sont introduits par une notule de présentation et un visuel (photo ou dessin), suivis d'une recension de leurs parutions. Divers index et tables détaillent les séries, par exemple une chronologie du journal indiquant les nouvelles séries apparaissant chaque année dans ses pages. Le troisième moment du livre est composé de sa seconde partie, nommée « En promenade au gré des pages ». Il s’agit d’une nouvelle série de tables et d’index classant et catégorisant tout ou partie du magazine selon diverses manières. Par exemple la table des couvertures du magazine, celle qui recense « tout ce qui, de près ou de loin […] se rapproche » des sciences et des techniques, celle qui répertorie les pages de jeux, etc.
Le livre a été imprimé à 1000 exemplaires : 100 hors commerces, destinés aux auteurs ou à leurs ayants droit, 250 qui ont été vendus par souscription et qui sont dits « édition originale », et 650 qui forment la « première édition ».

If your child had a somewhat morbid sense of humor, they could be marvelous children's books, but they were basically for adults fascinated by Gorey's literary and artistic allusions and the droll dreariness of his densely crosshatched style (although he rarely uses color, his thicket of lines ineluctably conjures them in the mind's eye; of course, all are the hues of dusk). This excellent volume presents the portfolios of ten major artists from around the world who have influenced the comic book from its inception until the late 1970s. Their talents are presented here in a wealth of striking colour and black & white plates displaying the depth and range of their vision. The book discusses their work in detail, highlights their contributions to this art form and compares their unique visions.
These ten artists have made a lasting impact in the field of comic book art. They are Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Frank Bellamy, Richard Corben, Barry Windsor-Smith, Jean Giraud, Philippe Druillet, Wallace Wood, Robert Crumb and Victor Moscoso. The author admits that the selection is incomplete but I agree with him that there is enough here to provide a broad history that reveals the rich talent and imagination hidden within this medium.
The author demonstrates how the comic book resembles the film media: both manufacture dreams and both came into their own in the 1930s and 1940s. There are a number of similar techniques in film and comics and the two media have influenced one another. A good comic book artist selects the most potent images for his story in the same way as a good film director.
The book also contains a biography of each of the artists and concludes with an extensive bibliography. Masters of Comic Book Art is an impressive display of many varied styles. Through its insightful text and brilliant illustrations it makes a valuable contribution to the discipline and history of comic book art.
