Jeremy D. Popkin - Press, Revolution, and Social I dentities in France, 1830-1835 (2001).jpg

"Following his magisterial studies of the press of the Old Regime and the Revolution, Jeremy Popkin turns to periodicals in Lyons in the 1830s. Focusing on how the press inflected political culture, he demonstrates that social classes realized their very existence through competing newspaper images. To understand this press is to comprehend the formation of an emerging industrial society. This book represents a quantum leap in the study of the nineteenth-century press, and Popkin opens up the field in unprecedented fashion." —Jack R. Censer, George Mason University

In this innovative study of the press during the French Revolutionary crisis of the early 1830s, Jeremy Popkin shows that newspapers played a crucial role in defining a new repertoire of identities—for workers, women, and members of the middle classes—that redefined Europe’s public sphere.

Nowhere was this process more visible than in Lyon, the great manufacturing center where the aftershocks of the July Revolution of 1830 were strongest. In July 1830 Lyon’s population had rallied around its liberal newspaper and opposed the conservative Restoration government. In less than two years, however, Lyon’s press and its public opinion, like those of the country as a whole, had become irrevocably fragmented. Popkin shows how the structure of the "journalistic field" in liberal society multiplied political conflicts and produced new tensions between the domains of politics and culture. New periodicals appeared claiming to speak for workers, for women, and for the local interests of Lyon. The public was becoming inherently plural with the emergence of new "imagined communities" that would dominate French public life well into the twentieth century.

Jeremy Popkin is well known for his earlier studies of journalism during the eighteenth century and the French Revolution. In Press, Revolution, and Social Identities in France, he not only moves forward in time but also offers a new model for a cultural history of journalism and its relationship to literature.

Mark Philp - The French Revolution and British Pop ular Politics (1991).jpg

The nine essays in this collection focus on the dynamics of British popular politics in the 1790s and on the impact of the French Revolution and the subsequent war with France. Leading scholars in the field explore the nature and origins of the ideological conflicts between reformers and loyalists, the impact of the war with France on the organisation of the British state and on its relations with its people, and the extent of the threat of revolution on both British and colonial territory. The French Revolution and British Popular Politics makes an unusually integrated and coherent collection of essays, substantially advancing knowledge in this controversial area and bringing together important work by senior figures in the field.

All History - Michael Snodgrass - Deference and Defiance in Monterr...Paternalism, and Revolution in Mexico, 1890-1950 2003.jpg

Michael Snodgrass explores how workers and industrialists perceived, responded to and helped determine the outcome of Mexico's revolution over a sixty-year period. His study begins with Monterrey's emergence as one of Latin-America's preeminent industrial cities and home to Mexico's most powerful business group. Snodgrass explores the roots of two distinct and enduring systems of industrial relations that were historical outcomes of the revolution: company paternalism and militant unionism. This book offers an urban and industrial perspective to a history of revolutionary Mexico overshadowed by studies of the countryside.

Milestones in Modern World History - Louise Chiple y Slavicek - The Treaty of Versailles (2010).jpg

In January 1919, following the defeat of the German-led Central Powers in World War I, delegates from the victorious Allied nations gathered in Paris to try to forge an enduring peace for the postwar world. The number and complexity of the issues confronting the Paris peacemakers in the wake of the deadliest and most disruptive war up to that time was daunting. The five separate treaties produced by the Peace Conference, and particularly the most famous one, the Treaty of Versailles with Germany, have been widely criticized over the years, primarily because they led to the rise of Nazi Germany and the Second World War a generation later. Nonetheless, faced with the overwhelming task of bringing order to a world shattered by four years of bitter fighting, the Paris delegates were convinced that they had fashioned a just and lasting peace. InThe Treaty of Versailles, read how world leaders struggled to deal with the aftermath of the War to End All Wars.

Charles W. Dahlinger - The German Revolution of 18 49 (1903).jpg

The European Revolutions of 1848, known in some countries as the Spring of Nations or the Year of Revolution, were a series of political upheavals throughout the European continent. Described by some historians as a revolutionary wave, the period of unrest began on 12 January 1848 in Sicily and then, further propelled by the French Revolution of 1848, soon spread to the rest of Europe. The "March Revolution" in the German states took place in the south and the west of Germany, with large popular assemblies and mass demonstrations. They primarily demanded German national unity, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, arming of the people and a national German parliament.

Uniformology CD-2004-28 - Napoleon's Imperial Guar d vol. I (2004).jpg

The glory of the Imperial Guard resounds above all others in the annals of war. Created, built and nurtured as a bodyguard for Napoleon, it grew from a brigade of less than two thousand men into a virtual army, and became ‘a human fortress which no one but he could dominate and no enemy could penetrate’. And, on such battlefields as Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland, Wagram and Waterloo, it won the laurels of undying fame. Illustrated by one of the leading military artists, Herbert Knotel, this first volume covers all the foot, artillery, engineers and headquarters of the Imperial Guard.

Alcuin Blamires - Chaucer, Ethics, and Gender (200 6).jpg

This book makes a vigorous reassessment of the moral dimension in Chaucer's writings. For the Middle Ages, the study of human behavior generally signified the study of the morality of attitudes, choices, and actions. Moreover, moral analysis was not gender neutral: it presupposed that certain virtues and certain failings were largely gender-specific. Alcuin Blamires, mainly concentrating on The Canterbury Tales, discloses how Chaucer adapts the composite inherited traditions of moral literature to shape the significance and the gender implications of his narratives. Chaucer, Ethics, and Gender is therefore not a theorization of ethical reading but a discussion of Chaucer's engagement with the literature of practical ethical advice. Working with the commonplace primary sources of the period, Blamires demonstrates that Stoic ideals, somewhat uncomfortably absorbed within medieval Christian moral codes as Chaucer realized, penetrate the poet's constructions of how women and men behave in matters (for instance) of friendship and anger, sexuality and chastity, protest and sufferance, generosity and greed, credulity and foresight.

Marcia R. Colish - Medieval Foundations of the Wes tern Intellectual Tradition (1999).jpg

This magisterial book provides an analysis of the course of Western intellectual history between A.D. 400 and 1400. The book is arranged in two parts: the first surveys the comparative modes of thought and varying success of Byzantine, Latin-Christian, and Muslim cultures, and the second takes the reader from the twelfth-century revival of learning to the high Middle Ages and beyond, the period in which the vibrancy of Western intellectual culture enabled it to stamp its imprint well beyond the frontiers of Christendom.

Maria Rosa Menocal - The Ornament of the World, Ho w Muslims, Jews and Christians Created a Culture o f Tolerance in Medieval Spain (2003).jpg

All History - Maria Rosa Menocal - The Ornament of the World, How M...reated a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain 2003.jpg

Widely hailed as a revelation of a "lost" golden age, this history brings to vivid life the rich and thriving culture of medieval Spain where, for more than seven centuries, Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in an atmosphere of tolerance, and literature, science, and the arts flourished.
In this engaging and learned volume, Menocal (Spanish and Portuguese, Yale U.) recounts the remarkable, multi-cultural history of medieval Spain, when Muslims ruled much of the country and elevated standards of art and learning.
María Rosa Menocal's wafting, ineffably sad The Ornament of the World tells of a time and place--from 786 to 1492, in Andalucía, Spain--that is largely and unjustly overshadowed in most historical chronicles. It was a time when three cultures--Judaic, Islamic, and Christian--forged a relatively stable (though occasionally contentious) coexistence. Such was this period that there remains in Toledo a church with an "homage to Arabic writing on its walls [and] a sumptuous 14th-century synagogue built to look like Granada's Alhambra." Long gone, however, is the Córdoba library--a thousand times larger than any other in Christian Europe. Menocal's history is one of palatine cities, of philosophers, of poets whose work inspired Chaucer and Boccaccio, of weeping fountains, breezy courtyards, and a long-running tolerance "profoundly rooted in the cultivation of the complexities, charms and challenges of contradictions," which ended with the repression of Judaism and Islam the same year Columbus sailed to the New World.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 412 - Peter Abbott - Ukrainia n Armies 1914-55 (2004).jpg

There can be no region in Europe whose history has been more tortured than Ukraine. During the 20th century Austria, Poland, Russia, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania vied for power over parts of this vast and fragmented area; and its divided peoples rose time and again in vain attempts to win their independence. For the first time in the West, this book gives a succinct summary of all the different armed forces raised among the Ukrainians, and of their uniforms and insignia. These are illustrated in colour and in a selection of extremely rare photographs, dating from the Great War to the aftermath of World War II, when Ukrainian guerrillas continued to defy the Soviet authorities until the mid-1950s.

Contents
World War I - Ukrainian units of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies · The first struggles for independence - the Ukrainian National Republic 1917-21 - the Western Ukrainian Republic 1918-20 · World War II - Carpathia-Ruthenia 1938-39 - Ukrainian units in the Wehrmacht, Polizei & Waffen-SS - Ukrainian National Army 1945 · Aftermath - the Ukrainian Insurgent Army 1941-56.

H. E. Marshall - The Story of Europe, From the Fa ll of the Roman Empire to the Reformation (2006).jpg

Presents the broader movements of European history, emphasizing the main factors which have gone into the formation and development of the various European states from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Reformation. The history of England is included only when that country plays a prominent part in the politics of Europe. A full treatment of the period immediately following the fall of the Roman Empire is given, since that period provides the necessary key to future developments. For smoother reading, dates are relegated to the margin for the most part. Maps, timelines, and genealogy charts of the various royal houses of Europe contribute to making this book an excellent resource for the study of the Middle Ages in Europe. Suitable for ages 14 and up.

All History - John Coffey - John Goodwin and the Puritan Revolution...tellectual Change in Seventeenth-Century England 2008.jpg

John Goodwin (1594-1665) was one of the most prolific and controversial writers of the English Revolution; his career illustrates some of the most important intellectual developments of the seventeenth century. Educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, he became vicar of a flagship Puritan parish in the City of London. During the 1640s, he wrote in defence of the civil war, the army revolt, Pride's Purge, and the regicide, only to turn against Cromwell in 1657. Finally, repudiating religious uniformity, he became one of England's leading tolerationists.
