In the heart of every man and woman, there’s a beast. And that truth fascinates and terrifies us all. We like to think we’re different. Unique. “Higher” in form and function than “mere” animals. And perhaps in the towering cities of our era, that’s true. But in the rugged landscapes of jungle or savannah, in the ocean depths or the forest shadows, our advantages disappear. Stripped of tools and technology, a man or woman in the wilderness becomes simple, naked prey. To survive, that person must return to the primal soul. To the beast. To the animal within. Some people are closer to that beast than others. In them, Beast and Man share one skin.
An adventure for the World of Darkness using the Storytelling Adventure System
We all have our demons. For some, they’re figurative: a gambling habit, a troubled son, a haunting past. But this book isn’t about figurative demons. It’s about the real deal, genuine entities from beyond this realm: a many-mouthed imp hissing and clicking in the corner; a long-limbed shadow whose face is a mask of locusts; a succubus with hungry fingers, diaphanous flesh and the unavoidable sour scent of mother’s milk left in its wake.
Much of the focus of the new World of Darkness is “your chronicle’s setting.” That is, the focus is very local. Hierarchies and organizations (even those that span the entire world) tend to center on a small geographical area, usually a town or city, rather than existing as a rigid structure on a regional, national or global basis. Even within specific worldwide social, political or spiritual groups, the residents of one town and thus the local manifestations of the group are not the same as those of another. They vary greatly from one city to the next. For Storytellers, this allows a great deal of customization, with sourcebooks offering suggestions of how things might be, without dictating how things must be in any given area. But did you ever stop to think about why? Why does so much of humanity dwell within city limits? Why do vampires and mages focus so strongly on citywide social and political structures, while bonds that extend out of the city are much more tenuous? Why do even were- wolves, feral creatures who are spiritual kin to wilderness predators, still tend to claim territories in and around human cities? Why do changelings organize their freeholds in and around existing towns?
The abandoned tenement on the block. The swamp where kids disappeared years ago. The old house on the hill. “The World of Darkness” is a phrase that’s bandied about loosely in Storytelling books, but there’s a lot of implicit, ominous meaning to the title that’s taken for granted. The World of Darkness is more than just a global realm of subtle, subversive machination and creeping, cryptic horror. It’s much smaller, much more personal than that. The World of Darkness as a setting includes the city in which your chronicle takes place, the neighborhood in which your character lives, the street he shares with others, and the house he calls home. A shadow is cast over them all, and under it suffering, oppression and depravity pervade. While the supernatural and the unknown span the planet, we can’t forget that they also lurk around the corner, down the street and disturbingly close to home.
Within the World of Darkness, there seem to be exceptions to every rule. Every “always” likely has an “other than”, every “must” has at least one corre- sponding “unless”. These supernatural creatures are a certain way, except when they are not. These legendary places are just like this, other than when they are different. These people behave this way, except when they do not. Likewise, magical items are exactly what they are described as in the various other game books — unless they are relics. Relics are, as a group, anomalies. Unlike standard magical items (klaives, im- bued items, Artifacts, fetishes or the like) crafted by mages, werewolves or any other supernatural group with such abilities, relics as a whole have very little in common with each other. They are not identifiable by any particular singular quality. Some are very powerful, others inert. Some are ancient, others all but brand new. Some are legendary, known even to those who know nothing else about the supernatural world; others are treasured only by a select few or even a single individual.
