If you have been installing, orange dip, brown dip, green dip capacitors over the years, have you been installing them the right way? Even the little yellow ones have polarity in circuit. Find out how to test your capacitors before you install them.... Then build this test fixture to make it even easier.

Today we take a first look at Audio Coupling Capacitors, what they are, what they do and why they're so important for quality audio. And I clarify the specifications for the 6550eh tube.
Note the vintage GE 6550 is actually a rebranded Tung-Sol, much better, everyone loves vintage Tungs!

There is a lot of debate about having the outer foil of a capacitor oriented the correct way so as to minimize hum and interference that can affect the amps performance and tonal qualities. I agree that it is probably a best practice to do so but not doing so is not going to kill the amp tone, usually. It might be a little noisier and that CAN be detrimental to your guitar tone.

Back again, old and slow me :-) Been meaning to do this video for some time now and finally did it. I've tried all kinds of vintage capacitors, the vintage NOS Sprague Bumblebee caps being the best overall, but last year I discovered Jupiter Condenser's Bumblebee replicas that blew me away with their sound and ACCURACY. Then last month I suddenly noticed they have two different versions, the aluminum foil ones and the TIN foil ones. The TIN foil ones are replicas of the earliest Bumblebee capacitors and I had never tried them out until a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised how good these also sound. They are a little bit warmer sounding and am loving both the tin and aluminum foil paper in oil Bees they sell. They are expensive at $30 each but well worth the money and the SOUND they give you if you are looking for a more vintage sound for your Les Paul or other Gibshunned type electric guitars. Chris Young is the owner of the company and they don't seem to have been noticed by guitar players all that much, so wanted to help expose them, especially to Les Paul players looking to do better than their stock instruments. In my four episode videos, "The Les Paul That Isn't," I didn't get much into the capacitors used in the vintage LP's, so this video might interest you in achieving a better more accurate sound for your guitars. Enjoy,
Dave Stephens

This video explains the preferred orientation of orange drop capacitors in guitar circuits. The video's creator, Drew Jones, demonstrates how to determine the correct orientation using a simple test with an amplifier and alligator clips. Drew also explains why this orientation is important for reducing noise and improving the overall sound quality of the instrument.

Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals!

There's a question that has long-plagued internet guitar forums and nerds such as myself....do the posh capacitors that some companies put out ACTUALLY make a difference to how our guitars sound??

In guitar amps, the type of capacitor is incredibly important for the likes of coupling capacitors...the entire signal passes through them, so every subtlety of their sound is vital. I'm a big fan of Dr Z amps, and you'll often hear Z talking about how they use Jupiter caps because they're the closest thing in sound to the old Astrons, etc.

But in a guitar tone circuit, the theory goes that everything passing through the tone cap is dumped to ground...and so we never actually hear anything going through the cap; only what's left. Assuming that capacitors are exactly the same in terms of capacitance value, the 'type' of capacitor shouldn't matter whatsoever. And yet, because Gibson used paper-in-oil Bumblebees back in the late 1950s, various companies charge £30+ for a single reissue Bumblebee capacitor. eBay is littered with capacitors for 'tone upgrades' and many boutique guitars ship with expensive PIO caps as standard. Couldn't they save a few pounds and just put a ceramic cap worth a few pennies in...??

Today, I wanted to compare seven different tone caps...ranging from a £31.95 Luxe Bumblebee Reissue down to a multi-layered ceramic cap worth about 3 pence. Are there any differences? And if so, are they worth bothering about? Perhaps most importantly, are any differences worth spending 1000x more on a capacitor?

What do you think? Any differences? Which was your favourite cap? Would you buy a Luxe? Comment below!

This is the thread from mylespaul.com with details of the 'actual' internals of Gibson's Historic Spec Reissue Bumblebees: https://www.mylespaul.com/threads/his...

Demo audio test with Orange Drop capacitors in three differend values 0,022uf 0,033uf 0,047uf clean without fx with a Squier Jazzmaster on a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 soundcard.

In the first test [1:43] you can hear the difference if you boost the tremble with some equalizer on good speakers or headphones the 0,022uf have more highs.
in the second test [4:12] you can cleary hear the 0.047 is more bassy

Capacitors are energy-storage devices that filter the high frequencies.
A cap lets the tone control roll off the treble response, progressively warming the tone.
The most important thing to know as a guitar player is that different value tone caps are going to affect different frequencies.
The larger the value of the cap, the darker the resulting tone.
Capacitors are measured in farads.
The electronic symbol for this is uF(μf).
This is useful information for when you start buying caps to experiment with.
Different brand capacitors will have a different sound as well.
There are Orange drops, Paper in Oil,
Bumblebees, ceramic discs and so many more.

Do all old capacitors need to be replaced? Just a quick video to report on something surprising some of you may find useful or interesting. Today I was working on an old Dynaco PAS-3X preamp I’m restoring. It’s in pretty good shape, but apparently got plenty of use as all the 12AX7 tubes tested as barely breathing. The preamp dates back to 1971, so at almost 50 years old, I assumed that along with the tubes, all the coupling capacitors would need to be replaced as well.
