Carol Kidd's classic debut album, a long time favourite demonstration album at hifi shows around the world, brought back to life on this high quality pressing - newly re-pressed on 180-gram vinyl from the original analogue recording. Produced by Murray Smith Recorded in 1984, this title features standards such as The More I See You and We'll Be Together Again, plus a witty Mel Torme arrangement of I Like To Recognise The Tune. Carol is supported by her excellent trio, whose long-standing collaboration ensures sensitive and instinctive performances. Her best known admirers include Frank Sinatra, who personally invited her to open for him at his Scottish shows, and Tony Bennett who, following a live performance, enthused to Carol: "Where have you been?! You should be world famous!"Carol Kidd's debut album confirmed her status as a leading jazz singer of modern times and marked the beginning of a career spanning three decades. Carol remains a popular performer in the UK and worldwide, performing sell-out concerts in Jakarta, Bali, Singapore and most recently China in 2007. She was a particular favourite of the late Ronnie Scott. In recent years jazz legends such as George Chisholm, Buck Clayton, Eddie Thomson, Humphrey Lyttelton, Cliff Hardie, Bob Brookmeyer and Martin Taylor have beenpleased to work alongside and enthuse about Carol's singing.

You know her voice. Scottish-singer/actress Rebecca Pidgeon captivated music lovers and audiophiles alike with her classic rendition of "Spanish Harlem". Now, on her new Celtic-inspired, musical story book "Four Marys" she takes listeners on a musical journey back to her Scottish roots. Historical, philosophical, humorous and tragic, "Four Marys" explores classic tales of love, infidelity, war and revenge. In the process, Pidgeon's fresh interpretations of traditional Celtic folk songs like "Fhear a Bhata", "Black Jack Davey" and "Jock O Hazeldean" - blend her unmistakable vocal style with a distinctive Celtic flavor. Featuring some of Celtic music's finest musicians such as Johnnie Cunningham on fiddle and mandolin and Jerry O'Sullivan on Uilleann Pipes, "Four Marys" is Pidgeon's tribute to her musical heritage. As she recalls of her own childhood, "My father knew many Scottish songs. It's a very small country and the music is all over. You hear it walking down Prices Street-there's always a bagpiper. It's soul music...To me, there's nothing like a good Scottish folk song."

Colombian jazz-folk singer-composer Gomez has achieved a charming synthesis of old and new, past and present. Her compositions are a travelogue of South and Central American, Caribbean and European influences. She moves fluidly between Peruvian lando, Argentinean chamame and Cuban son, weaving African-derived rhythms and percussions over the plaintive melodies of indigenous peoples or descended from Spanish conquistadores, whose own songs incorporated Sephardic Jewish and Moorish sounds. Recorded at New York’s Saint Peter’s Church, which is equally famous for its jazz ministry and warm acoustics, her clear, crooning mezzo-soprano is supported by an intimate combo of strings, woodwinds and percussion, plus an occasional accordion. In such a setting and in the hands of such talented performers, the special timbre of each instrument is appreciated anew and even handclaps take on an almost orchestral importance. One delightful stand-out is a Mexican ranchera-infused treatment of "Cielito Lindo." A chestnut if there ever was one, Gomez’ tender interpretation reflects love for her mother (whose name is Cielo -- "Cielito" is the diminutive) and a sense that even familiar things may harbor unexpected surprises. - Christina Roden
