Walter Thabit - How East New York Became a Ghetto (2003).jpg

"Walter Thabit eloquently tells the story of East New York, a neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn, complementing his close observation of events in the neighborhood with astute analyses of the bearing of larger forces on this big city slum. Events in East New York reveal in microcosm the turbulent national forces that have determined the fate of inner city ghettos across the country over the past 40 years." --from the Foreword by Frances Fox PivenIn response to the riots of the mid-'60s, Walter Thabit was hired to work with the community of East New York to develop a plan for low- and moderate-income public housing. In the years that followed, he experienced first-hand the forces that had engineered East New York's dramatic decline and that continued to work against its successful revitalization. How East New York Became a Ghetto describes the shift of East New York from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to a largely black and Puerto Rican neighborhood and shows how the resulting racially biased policies caused the deterioration of this once flourishing area.

Howard J. Fuller - Clad in Iron, The American Civi l War and the Challenge of British Naval Power (20 07).jpg

This work addresses many persistent misconceptions of what the monitors were for, and why they failed in other roles associated with naval operations of the Civil War (such as the repulse at Charleston, April 7, 1863). Monitors were 'ironclads'- not fort-killers. Their ultimate success is to be measured not in terms of spearheading attacks on fortified Southern ports but in the quieter, much more profound, strategic deterrence of Lord Palmerston's ministry in London, and the British Royal Navy's potential intervention. The relatively unknown 'Cold War' of the American Civil War was a nevertheless crucial aspect of the survival, or not, of the United States in the mid 19th-century. Foreign intervention--explicitly in the form of British naval power--represented a far more serious threat to the success of the Union blockade, the safety of Yankee merchant shipping worldwide, and Union combined operations against the South than the Confederate States Navy.

Thomas Reid - Spartan Band, Burnett's 13th Texas C avalry In The Civil War (2005).jpg

In Spartan Band (coined from a chaplain's eulogistic poem) author Thomas Reid traces the Civil War history of the 13th Texas Cavalry, a unit drawn from eleven counties in East Texas. The cavalry regiment organized in the spring of 1862 but was ordered to dismount once in Arkansas. The regiment gradually evolved into a tough, well-trained unit during action at Lake Providence, Fort De Russy, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry, as part of Maj. Gen. John G. Walker's Texas division in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Reid researched letters, documents, and diaries gleaned from more than one hundred descendants of the soldiers, answering many questions relating to their experiences and final resting places. He also includes detailed information on battle casualty figures, equipment issued to each company, slave ownership, wealth of officers, deaths due to disease, and the effects of conscription on the regiment's composition.

Dieter Plehwe, Bernhard Walpen, Gisela Neunhoffer - Neoliberal Hegemony, A Global Critique (2006).jpg

Neoliberalism is fast becoming the dominant ideology of our age, yet politicians, businessmen and academics rarely identify themselves with it and even political forces critical of it continue to carry out neoliberal policies around the globe. How can we make sense of this paradox? Who actually are “the neoliberals”? This book challenges simplistic understandings of neoliberalism. It underlines the variety of neoliberal schools of thought, the various approaches of its proponents in the fight for hegemony in research and policy development, political and communication efforts, and the well funded, well coordinated, and highly effective new types of knowledge organizations generated by the neoliberal movement: partisan think tanks.

Murray N. Rothbard - The Case Against the Fed (199 4).jpg

The Case Against the Fed is a book by Murray N. Rothbard criticizing the United State Federal Reserve, fractional reserve banking, and central banks in general. It details the history of fractional reserve banking and the influence that bankers have had on monetary policy over the last few centuries.

Rothbard claims that the notion that the Federal Reserve is designed to fight inflation is merely propaganda. He explains that since money supply inflation is only caused by an increase in the money supply, and only banks increase the money supply, then banks, including the Federal Reserve are the only source of money supply inflation. (Wikipedia.org)

The most powerful case against the American central bank ever written. This work begins with a mini-treatment of money and banking theory, and then plunges right in with the real history of the Federal Reserve System. Rothbard covers the struggle between competing elites and how they converged with the Fed.
Rothbard calls for the abolition of the central bank and a restoration of the gold standard. His popular treatment incorporates the best and most up-to-date scholarship on the Fed's origins and effects.

Osprey - Warrior 126 - Ian MacPherson McCulloch - Highlander in the French-Indian War 1756-67 (2008).jpg

Colonial American historian Ian Macpherson McCulloch uses rare sources to bring to life the stirring story of the three Scottish Highland regiments that operated in North America during the French-Indian War. Forbidden to carry arms or wear the kilt unless they served the British King, many former Jacobite rebels joined the new Highland regiments raised in North America. Involved in some of the most bloody and desperate battles fought on the American continent, Highlanders successfully transformed their image from enemies of the crown to Imperial heroes, showing their bravery and determination at major battles like Ticonderoga and Quebec.

Hilton L. Root - Alliance Curse. How America Lost the Third World (2008).jpg

In "Alliance Curse", Hilton Root illustrates that recent U.S. foreign policy is too often misguided, resulting in misdirected foreign aid and alliances that stunt political and economic development among partner regimes, leaving America on the wrong side of change. Many alliances with third world dictators, ostensibly of mutual benefit, reduce incentives to govern for prosperity and produce instead political and social instability and economic failure. Yet again, in the war on terror and in the name of preserving global stability, America is backing authoritarian regimes that practice repression and plunder. It is as if the cold war never ended. While espousing freedom and democracy, the U.S. contradicts itself by aiding governments that do not share those values. In addition to undercutting its own stated goal of promoting freedom, America makes the developing world even more wary of its intentions. Yes, the democracy we preach arouses aspirations and attracts immigrants, but those same individuals become our sternest critics; having learned to admire American values, they end up deploring U.S. policies toward their own countries. Long term U.S. security is jeopardized by a legacy of resentment and distrust. "Alliance Curse" proposes an analytical foundation for national security that challenges long-held assumptions about foreign affairs. It questions the wisdom of diplomacy that depends on questionable linkages or outdated suppositions. The end of the Soviet Union did not portend the demise of communism, for example. Democracy and socialism are not incompatible systems. Promoting democracy by linking it with free trade risks overemphasizing the latter goal at the expense of the former. The growing tendency to play China against India in an effort to retain American global supremacy will hamper relations with both--an intolerable situation in today's interdependent world. Root buttresses his analysis with case studies of American foreign policy toward developing countries (e.g., Vietnam), efforts at state building, and nations growing in importance, such as China. He concludes with a series of recommendations designed to close the gap between security and economic development

John Zerzan - Running on Emptiness, The Pathology of Civilization (2008).jpg

Thinker and revolutionary John Zerzan has been widely credited with inspiring the new generation of antiglobalization activists. Collecting essays and interviews, Running on Emptiness reflects Zerzan’s wide range of interests, from the political (“We All Live in Waco”) to the personal (“So ... How Did You Become an Anarchist?”). This book deftly mixes history, anthropology, science, cultural theory, and politics to offer a critique of society as well as a blueprint for change. “John Zerzan ... can now credibly claim the ... honor of being America’s most famous anarchist. ”

01 - USA - Lael Brainard - Global Development 2.0, Can Philanthro...ts, the Public, and the Poor Make Poverty History 2008.jpg

The fight against global poverty has quickly become one of the hottest tickets on the global agenda - with rock stars, world leaders, and multibillionaires calling attention to the plight of the poor at international confabs, such as the World Economic Forum and the Clinton Global Initiative. The cozy, all-of-a-kind club of rich country officials who for decades dominated the development agenda has given way to a profusion of mega-philanthropists, "celanthropists," and super-charged advocacy networks vying to solve the world's toughest problems. Supporting the development glitterati is a sizable rank and file made up of the mass public - as evidenced by the abundance of "Make Poverty History" wristbands, an Internet-enabled spike in charitable giving at all income levels, and record involvement in overseas volunteering. While philanthropic foundations and celebrity goodwill ambassadors have been part of the charitable landscape for many years, the unprecedented explosion of development players heralds a new era of global action on poverty. "Global Development 2.0 " celebrates this transformative trend within international aid and offers lessons to ensure that this wave of generosity yields lasting and widespread improvements to the lives and prospects of the world's poorest. The contributors include Matthew Bishop (Economist), Joshua Busby (University of Texas-Austin), J. Gregory Dees (Duke University), Vinca LaFleur (Vinca LaFleur Communications), Homi Kharas (Brookings Institution), Ashok Khosla (Development Alternatives Group), Mark Kramer (FSG Social Impact Advisors), Jane Nelson (Harvard University), Joseph O'Keefe (Brookings Institution), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Brookings Institution), Darrell M.West (Brown University), and Simon Zadek (AccountAbility).

Nicolas P. Retsinas, Eric S. Belsky - Borrowing to Live, Consumer and Mortgage Credit Revisited (200 8).jpg

Americans are awash in debt. Credit undergirds daily life more than ever before - it is one of the defining aspects of life in the United States today. The damage from a depressed housing market is exacerbated by the subprime lender implosion, sending shock waves through the financial sector, international economies, and the presidential campaign. Most low- or moderate-income people borrow, but they are doing it to stay afloat rather than to keep up with the Joneses. How did things go so wrong? How can we maintain and expand access to credit while protecting the consumer and avoiding a reoccurrence of the current crisis? In "Borrowing to Live", the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University bring together an elite group of experts, an eclectic group drawn from the best of academia, research, and public service. Together with editors Nicolas Retsinas and Eric Belsky, they dissect the current state of consumer and mortgage credit in the United States and help point the way out of the current impasse.

Symbols on American Money (2007).jpg

Paper money has circulated in America at least as far back as colonial times. But how did American
currency come to look the way it does? What do all the symbols on our money mean?
About the Essay:
This essay is based on a lecture given by Stephen L. Goldsmith, on May 22, 2007, at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The Reserve Bank and Smythe and Company, one of New York’s oldest and largest coin and paper money auctioneers and dealers, are co-sponsoring this publication as part of the Bank’s economic education and public information efforts.
