Alan P. Dobson - Anglo American Relations in the T wentieth Century, Of Friendship, Conflict and the Rise and Decline of Superpowers (1995).jpg

01 - USA - Alan P. Dobson - Anglo American Relations in the Twenti... Conflict and the Rise and Decline of Superpowers 1995.jpg

The relationship between Britain and America has been the most important bilateral relationship the world has ever seen. Anglo-American Relations in the Twentieth Century covers the whole of this century and employs selected historical detail to expose this complex relationship in its true light. Dobson rejects the claim that the US was ever hegemonical. He explores the special relationship between the two nations paying close attention to:

* the First World War
* inter-war economic relations
* the Suez Crisis
* Iran in the 1960s
* Grenada in 1983
* the Gulf War

These events clearly demonstrate that America has had to bargain with Britain, not always get its way. However, the two nations have co-operated in every major crisis from the Great to the Gulf war, and together promoted liberal democracy and capitalism. This story reveals both more interdependence and conflict than has been recognised in the past. Nuclear, intelligence, defence and other links between the USA and Britain continue to this day, but the importance of the `special relationship'' has diminished for both countries. Have common interests disappeared to an extent that the scope for bilateral cooperation has diminished to insignificance?

Clark Kerr - The Gold and the Blue, A Personal Mem oir of the University of California, 1949 - 1967, Volume One, Academic Triumphs (2001).jpg

01 - USA - Clark Kerr - The Gold and the Blue, A Personal Memoir o...ornia, 1949 - 1967, Volume One, Academic Triumphs 2001.jpg

The Los Angeles Times called the first volume of The Gold and the Blue "a major contribution to our understanding of American research universities." This second of two volumes continues the story of one of the last century's most influential figures in higher education. A leading visionary, architect, leader, and fighter for the University of California, Clark Kerr was chancellor of the Berkeley campus from 1952 to 1958 and president of the university from 1958 to 1967. He saw the university through its golden years--a time of both great advancement and great conflict. This absorbing memoir is an intriguing insider's account of how the University of California rose to the peak of scientific and scholarly stature and how, under Kerr's unique leadership, it evolved into the institution it is today. In Volume II: Political Turmoil, Kerr turns to the external and political environment of the 1950s and 1960s, contrasting the meteoric rise of the University of California to the highest pinnacle of academic achievement with its troubled political context. He describes his attempts to steer a middle course between attacks from the political Right and Left and discusses the continuing attacks on the university, and on him personally, by the state Un-American Activities Committee. He provides a unique point of view of the Free Speech Movement on the Berkeley campus in the fall of 1964. He also details the events of January 1967, when he was dismissed as president of the university by the Board of Regents.

Kent Lightfoot - Indians, Missionaries, and Mercha nts, The Legacy of Colonial Encounters on the Cali fornia Frontiers (2007).jpg

01 - USA - Kent Lightfoot - Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants,...f Colonial Encounters on the California Frontiers 2007.jpg

California's earliest European colonists--Russian merchants and Spanish missionaries--depended heavily on Native Americans for labor to build and maintain their colonies, but they did so in very different ways. This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past--including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations--to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Kent Lightfoot's innovative work, which incorporates the holistic methods of historical anthropology, explores the surprising ramifications of these long-ago encounters for the present-day political status of native people in California. Lightfoot weaves the results of his own significant archaeological research at Fort Ross, a major Russian mercantile colony, into a cross-cultural comparison, showing how these two colonial ventures--one primarily mercantile and one primarily religious--contributed to the development of new kinds of native identities, social forms, and tribal relationships. His lively account includes personal anecdotes from the field and a provocative discussion of the role played by early ethnographers, such as Alfred Kroeber, in influencing which tribes would eventually receive federal recognition. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants takes a fascinating, yet troubling, look at California's past and its role in shaping the state today.

Ron Rapoport - The Immortal Bobby, Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf (2005).jpg

"A thorough biography of Jones. Solid reporting." (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

"Bobby Jones' golf Grand Slam, achieved 75 years ago, ranks among sports' greatest accomplishments… He did it, but as Ron Rapoport discovered… not without a great deal of suffering, mental and physical." (USA Today)

"The Immortal Bobby is a well-researched and unvarnished biography of Jones by Ron Rapoport, a Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist and National Public Radio commentator. Rapoport excels at adding sociological context to Jones' achievements." (GolfWeek)

There are several Bobby Jones books out this spring commemorating the 75th anniversary of his 1930 Grand Slam, but none so far is better researched, or told with greater detail, than this one by Rapoport, a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. Rapoport recounts the more fascinating details of Jones' life after doing scores of interviews and poring over the golfer's many correspondences. Jones was a prolific writer; in fact, his own accounts of his golf matches occasionally appeared in the next day's paper. Rapoport says he "discovered a disparity between the man and the myth that was not always so simple." He recounts that despite his gentlemanly image, Jones could hold a fearsome grudge, as he did against fellow pro Chick Evans, whose every attempt at reconciliation was rebuffed. As for 1930, Rapoport brings much of the detail of the Grand Slam quest back to life. Forgotten, until now, are the numerous near-disasters and the internal turmoil that make Jones' ultimate triumph all the more admirable. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Rose McDermott - Presidential Leadership, Illness, and Decision Making (2007).jpg

This book is about how illness affects the behavior of American presidents. It discusses four cases in American history of presidential decision making being affected by illness. The main purpose of this book is to show that health problems have a bigger impact on important political decisions than people may have realized. This book differs from the competition because it focuses primarily on foreign policy, where a president has greater freedom of authority, and also features detailed analysis of historical case studies.

Ellen Ullman - Close to the Machine, Technophilia and Its Discontents (2001).jpg

Here is a candid account of the life of a software engineer who runs her own computer consulting business out of a live-work loft in San Francisco’s Multimedia Gulch. Immersed in the abstract world of information, algorithms, and networks, she would like to give in to the seductions of the programmer’s world, where “weird logic dreamers” like herself live “close to the machine.” Still, she is keenly aware that body and soul are not mechanical: desire, love, and the need to communicate face to face don’t easily fit into lines of codes or clicks in a Web browser. At every turn, she finds she cannot ignore the social and philosophical repercussions of her work. As Ullman sees it, the cool world of cyber culture is neither the death of civilization nor its salvation—it is the vulnerable creation of people who are not so sure of just where they’re taking us all.

Ellen Ullman has worked as a software engineer and consultant since 1978. She is the author of The Bug and her writing has been published in Resisting the Virtual Life, Wired Woman, and in Harper’s Magazine. She is a commentator on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”"

Lesley Brill - John Huston's Filmmaking (1997).jpg

John Huston's Filmmaking offers an analysis of the life and work of one of the greatest American independent filmmakers. Always visually exciting, Huston's films sensitively portray humankind in all its incarnations, chronicling the attempts by protagonists to conceive and articulate their identities. In this study, Lesley Brill shows Huston's films to be far more than formulaic adventures of masculine failure, arguing instead that they demonstrate the close connection among humanity, the natural world, and divinity.

Genres in American Cinema - Martin Rubin - Thrille rs (1999).jpg

The thriller is perhaps the most popular and widespread movie genre--and the most difficult to define. Thrillers can contain gangsters or ghosts, space helmets or fedoras. They charge our familiar world with a spirit of exotic, old-fashioned adventure. They give us pleasure by making us uncomfortable--on the edge of our seats. Thrillers provides a comprehensive treatment of this genre, from silent serials to stalker films, from Alfred Hitchcock to Quentin Tarantino, from The Great Train Robbery to L.A. Confidential. This accessible, wide-ranging volume is designed to appeal to students and general filmgoers alike, and shows how this visceral, double-faced film genre has aroused our intense sensations throughout decades of American cinema.

Lyn Spillman - Nation and Commemoration, Creating National Identities in the United States and Austr alia (1997).jpg

01 - USA - Lyn Spillman - Nation and Commemoration, Creating Nati...nal Identities in the United States and Australia 1997.jpg

What do people think when they imagine themselves as part of a nation? What are the experiences and symbols that define their nationhood? Nation and Commemoration examines how two similar sets of people, Australians and Americans, have created and recreated their different national identities. Lyn Spillman compares American and Australian national identities at the end of the nineteenth century and again at the end of the twentieth. What do people think when they imagine themselves as part of a nation? Nation and Commemoration answers this question in an exploration of the creation and recreation of national identities through commemorative activities. Extending recent work in cultural sociology and history, Lyn Spillman compares centennial and bicentennial celebrations in the United States and Australia to show how national identities can emerge from processes of ‘cultural production’. She systematically analyses the symbols and meanings of national identity in these two ‘new nations’, identifying changes and continuities, similarities and differences in how visions of history, place in the world, politics, land, and diversity have been used to ex nationhood. The result is a deeper understanding, not only of American and Australian nationalidentities, but also of the global process of nation-formation.

St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, 5 Volum e set (1999).jpg

This encyclopedia focuses on American popular culture, examining the post- World War II era in over 2700 alphabetical essays in the following broad categories: film, music, print culture, social life, sports, television and radio, and art and performance. It contains both descriptive essays (75-150 words) and more in-depth essays (up to 3000 words), each signed and concluding with a secondary bibliography. Volume 5 ends with a variety of indexes: a general index, a "Time-Frame Index" (by decades), and a category index. Unfortunately, however, the general index lists the essays in which a topic, person, or event is discussed but not the major essay about the subject. To discover if there is an actual essay about a specific topic, one must go to the correct alphabetical portion of the encyclopedia or consult the "List of Entries" at the front of the volume. This would not normally be a problem, but unfortunately there are very few cross references in the text--and none at all in the index. For example, to find the American Association of Retired Persons, one needs to know to look under AARP; there is no cross reference from the full name to the acronym in either the encyclopedia or the general index. The general index only points the reader to an essay mentioning the American Association of Retired Persons, not to the essay specifically about AARP. In addition, there are no See Also references (except for one that should really have been a See reference).

Darrell Cleveland - A Long Way to Go, Conversation s About Race by African American Faculty and Gradu ate Students (2004).jpg

01 - USA - Darrell Cleveland - A Long Way to Go, Conversations Ab...by African American Faculty and Graduate Students 2004.jpg

A Long Way to Go: Conversations about Race by African American Faculty and Graduate Students highlights the experiences and coping strategies of faculty members and graduate students pursuing Ph.D.s who have successfully navigated the academy despite hostile environments and hurdles that cause many to avoid or leave the academy. African American students and faculty often face problems such as isolation within a white environment, the misinterpretation of confidence as aggressiveness, and the need to work twice as hard as white peers in order to be taken seriously in their chosen careers. This book will assist both doctoral students and junior faculty in successfully completing the graduate school experience and transitioning into tenure-track positions, and will be of great interest to all higher education faculty and administrators who must address the complex issues of diversity in recruiting and retaining graduate students and faculty.

01 - USA - John Dryzek, Daid Downs, Hans-Kristian Hernes, David Sc...nited States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Norway 2003.jpg

Social movements take shape in relation to the kind of state they face, while over time states are transformed by the movements that they both incorporate and resist. Green States and Social Movements is a comparative study of the environmental movement's successes and failures in four very different states: the USA, UK, Germany and Norway. The history covers the entire sweep of the modern environmental era that begins in 1970. The end in view is a green transformation of the state and society on a par with earlier transformations that gave us first the liberal capitalist state and then the welfare state. The authors explain why such a transformation is now most likely in Germany, and why it is least likely in the United States, which has lost the status of environmental pioneer that it gained in the early 1970s. Their comparative analysis also explains the role played by social movements in making modern societies more deeply democratic, and yields insights into the strategic choices of environmental movements as they decide on what terms to engage, enter or resist the state. Sometimes it makes sense for a movement to act conventionally, as a green party or set of interest groups. But sometimes inclusion can mean co-optation, in which case a movement can instead emphasize action in and through civil society.

Douglas Flamming - Bound for Freedom, Black Los An geles in Jim Crow America (2005).jpg

Paul Bontemps decided to move his family to Los Angeles from Louisiana in 1906 on the day he finally submitted to a strictly enforced Southern custom--he stepped off the sidewalk to allow white men who had just insulted him to pass by. Friends of the Bontemps family, like many others beckoning their loved ones West, had written that Los Angeles was "a city called heaven" for people of color. But just how free was Southern California for African Americans?
This splendid history, at once sweeping in its historical reach and intimate in its evocation of everyday life, is the first full account of Los Angeles's black community in the half century before World War II. Filled with moving human drama, it brings alive a time and place largely ignored by historians until now, detailing African American community life and political activism during the city's transformation from small town to sprawling metropolis. Writing with a novelist's sensitivity to language and drawing from fresh historical research, Douglas Flamming takes us from Reconstruction to the Jim Crow era, through the Great Migration, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and the build-up to World War II. Along the way, he offers rich descriptions of the community and its middle-class leadership, the women who were front and center with men in the battle against racism in the American West. In addition to drawing a vivid portrait of a little-known era, Flamming shows that the history of race in Los Angeles is crucial for our understanding of race in America. The civil rights activism in Los Angeles laid the foundation for critical developments in the second half of the century that continue to influence us to this day.

John D. Hardison - The Megaton Blasters, Story of the 4925th Test Group (1990).jpg

In February, 1950, a double barbed-wire complex was set up within Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico, to headquarter a new Top Secret U.S. Air Force unit designated the 4925th Test Group (Atomic). A small sign at the gate simply said "Santa Fe Operations". Unauthorized, curious visitors were politely but firmly turned away by armed USAF Air Policemen. The best bomber and fighter pilots in the USAF and all types of expert support personnel were located worldwide and orders were promptly cut transferring them to the elite 4925th.
