As the summer comes to an end, Felicity's father begins nagging her about her future. She hopes to prove that she has a future in her major by gaining admission to the honors art program. Ben returns from the EMT training session and announces that he wants to become a doctor. He signs up for a heavy course-load, and realizes that he will have to stay in school a fifth year to finish his pre-med requirements. Felicity's father comes to town and accuses her of wasting her college years. She becomes furious at his interference and decides to pay for her final year of college herself. Javier serves as a go-between for Elena and his cousin, who is designing her wedding dress. Elena is extremely demanding, and Javier eventually becomes fed up with her attitude. He apologizes after realizing that she was trying to duplicate her late mother's dress. Sean and Meghan quarrel after she names Tracy to a hypothetical list of men with whom she wants to have sex.

A woman known for identifying trends congratulates Meghan on her "look." Sean decides to market shirts with tube socks as sleeves, but Meghan doesn't want people copying her. She soon discovers that she isn't as original as she had thought. Richard meets a fellow Star Wars fanatic at the Halloween party, but his plans for romance go awry when his homemade Darth Vader helmet gets stuck.

Ben learns that his father is being hospitalized with liver failure. He reluctantly goes to the hospital and meets Lauren, a friend of Mr. Covington's from A.A. Felicity suspects that Professor Cavallo is coming on to her. He denies this, but she grows uneasy over his relationship with a student. Noel refuses to post job listings for the students, and interviews for several of the positions himself. He must deal with two loud and obnoxious freshman girls, who have come to dislike living on an all-guys floor. They end up being assigned to Felicity and Elena's apartment, where they work Elena's last nerve. The girls feign an interest in Richard in the hopes of getting closer to Noel. Richard loudly complains about Noel's alleged success with women as Elena leaves Noel an angry phone message. The speaker phone picks up Richard saying that Noel slept with Felicity, so he and Elena have to hurry to the loft to erase the message before Ben can hear it. Meghan and Sean decide to start a shirt company.

He is confused when Noel takes him to a restaurant instead of going to the gang's gathering.

He tries to kiss Felicity at a party at the girls' dorm room. Meghan grows bored with life with Sean, while he becomes fed up with her insistence on criticizing his ideas. After a girl from the coffee stand compliments one of his potential inventions, Sean invites her to the party. Meghan makes a date with a musician from her acting class. Sean and Meghan argue, but later apologize. Noel is confused when Zoe criticizes his and Sean's ideas before she has even heard them. She admits that she was jealous because Noel sat next to a female co-worker at a meeting.

Meghan advises Felicity to destroy the dissertation and tell the professor that she doesn't want to be published. A library worker catches Felicity trying to throw out the book, but Meghan later cuts a deal with him and steals it. Professor Carnes informs Felicity that some members of the university journal's review board have questions about whether Felicity wrote the paper. Felicity confesses the truth to Ben.

Sean shows way too much interest in Noel's love life. Noel begins to fear that Zoe isn't attracted to him because they have yet to sleep together. She later assures him that this is not the case; she had been depressed the past few weeks because she had stopped taking her medication. Richard asks Elena to go to a dance with him to make another girl jealous. She punches him after learning that he only asked her because she is black.
