Die Nachschubtruppe war stets ein Stiefkind der Geschichtsschreibung - zu Unrecht, denn ohne ihren stetigen Einsatz hätte die kämpfende Truppe nicht existieren können. Einen tiefen Einblick in die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Nachschubtruppe, ihre Aufgaben, Organisation und Gliederung liefert der erste Teil dieses Buches.
Der Lastkraftwagen als das Transportmittel der Wehrmacht wird im zweiten Teil mit vielen historischen Bildern, genauen Modellbezeichnungen und technischen Angaben ausführlich vorgestellt. Deutsche Hersteller, wie Borgward, Büssing-NAG, Daimler-Benz, Faun, Ford, Henschel, Krupp, Magirus, MAN, Opel, Phänomen und Vomag belieferten die Wehrmacht mit LKWs für unterschiedlichste Einsätze. Kein Wunder, dass diese Hersteller- und Typenvielfalt zu Schwierigkeiten bei Wartung und Ersatzteilbeschaffung führte. Deshalb wurde der "Einheits-Diesel" entwickelt, ein leichter Einheits-LKW mit 6 x 6-Antrieb, Einfachbereifung und hervorragenden Geländeeigenschaften, der unter Aufsicht des Heereswaffenamtes von verschiedenen Firmen völlig baugleich produziert wurde.
Eine wichtige Rolle spielten besonders in den raumgreifenden deutschen Operationen des Zweiten Weltkriegs auch die zahlreich eingesetzten Beute-LKWs ausländischer Hersteller, denen ebenfalls ein Kapitel dieses umfassenden Bildbandes gewidmet ist. Im Anhang finden sich detaillierte Angaben zu den KFZ-Nummern der vielen Spezialfahrzeuge, den Zulassungsnummern, taktischen Abzeichen, Divisionsabzeichen, Verladeklassen, den Tarnanstrichen und vieles mehr.

At the end of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, fearing that retreating Germans would consolidate large numbers of troops in an Alpine stronghold and from there conduct a protracted guerilla war, turned U.S. forces toward the heart of Franconia, ordering them to cut off and destroy German units before they could reach the Alps.
Opposing this advance was a conglomeration of German forces headed by SS-Gruppenführer Max Simon, a committed National Socialist who advocated merciless resistance. Under the direction of officers schooled in harsh combat in Russia, the Germans succeeded in bringing the American advance to a grinding halt.
Caught in the middle were the people of Franconia. Historians have accorded little mention to this period of violence and terror, but it pres insight into the chaotic nature of life while the Nazi regime was crumbling. Neither German civilians nor foreign refugees acted simply as passive victims caught between two fronts. Throughout the region people ured local authorities to end the senseless resistance and sought revenge for their tribulations in the "liberation" that followed.
Stephen G. Fritz examines the predicament and outlook of American GI’s, German soldiers and officials, and the civilian population caught in the arduous fighting during the waning days of World War II. Endkampf is a gripping portrait of the collapse of a society and how it affected those involved, whether they were soldiers or civilians, victors or vanquished, perpetrators or victims.

Operation Bagration - the Russian codename for the 1944 summer offensive, which led to the complete annihilation of Army Group Centre - was without doubt the most devastating defeat ever experienced by the German Army during the Second World War. Yet this mammoth offensive has for years been completely overshadowed by the Normandy campaign, which was unleashed just three weeks prior to Bagration along the shores of northern France. The battle which the German forces of Army Group Centre endured on the Eastern Front that fateful summer was more catastrophic than that experienced on the Western Front, but the English-speaking world remains largely ignorant of its details. This book reveals the lesser-known battle in the East and demonstrates the gallantry and self-sacrifice of the German forces against overwhelming odds. Drawing on rare and previously unpublished photographs accompanied by in-depth captions the book vividly describes how the German forces of Army Group Centre endured a massive Russian offensive three years to the day after Germany`s 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. Fighting over many of the same battlefields, it reveals how scores of German troops were urged on by their Führer to defend their positions to the death in a desperate attempt to prevent the mighty Red Army forces from recapturing Byelorussia, the last bastion of defence for the Germans before Poland. The Bagration offensive was a bloodthirsty battle of attrition which resulted in a catastrophe of unbelievable proportions. Throughout the book the author provides an absorbing analysis of this traumatic battle and shows how German soldiers continued to fight to the bitter end amidst the constant hammer blows of ground and aerial bombardment, and endless armoured and infantry attacks. Although many German units continued to wage a grim and bitter defence the Red Army swamped the already overstretched front lines. The Soviets punched massive holes in the disintegrating defences almost everywhere, letting through a seemingly-unstoppable flood, pushing apart and encircling many precious German Panzer and infantry divisions. In the end Bagration cost the Wehrmacht more men and material than the catastrophe at Stalingrad sixteen months earlier. The shattering defeat of Army Group Centre resulted in the loss of over 300,000 men and witnessed Soviet forces pushing exhausted German remnants out of Russia and through Poland to the gates of Warsaw.

This book tells the story of one of the most interesting load-carrying vehicles ever built. Pieced together from incomplete and disparate records, museum exhibits, books, anecdotes, old soldiers' and airmen's fond recollections - as well as a lifetime of fascination with the 'QL', the story covers this Bedford 3-tonner from evolution to peacetime activity, concentrating particularly on the many and vital roles it played during World War Two.
Despite numerous contradictory 'clues' present in the surviving material, this account gives as accurate a picture as I have been able to construct. Other records may still exist which could shed further light on the subject, and there will be people intimately involved with QLs who will be able to provide fact where I can only provide deduction and conjecture. I ask these experts to bear with me or, better still, to confirm the facts of the matter. For those who are less well-informed, this account will, I hope, provide them with useful and interesting information on the QL and, at least partially, explain my own obsession with the marque.
Part of the reason for this obsession may lie in the fact that the QL was the first vehicle in which I have any recollection of travelling. My father, to whose memory, together with that of my mother, I should like to dedicate this book, was an RASC driver during World War Two and I can recall, as a toddler, riding in the back (of a QLT) and being thoroughly spoiled by the Tommies who plied me with biscuits which appeared from 61b tins stowed under the seats - all very exciting, but something about that day has stayed with me all my life and perhaps even shaped my career, which has ended up in transport consultancy!
