The struggle of British, Commonwealth and American-Chinese troops against the Japanese in Burma was one of the decisive campaigns of the Second World War. British India was threatened by the Japanese advance, the fate of the British Empire in the East hung in the balance. The tropical climate – dense malarial jungle infested with vermin and swept by monsoon rains – made the fighting, for both sides, a remarkable feat of arms. Yet the war in Burma rarely receives the attention it deserves. Roy C. Nesbit, in this highly illustrated account, traces the entire course of the campaign. In vivid detail he describes the British retreat and humiliation at the hands of the Japanese invaders in 1942. The Japanese were fanatical and trained in jungle warfare, well-equipped and backed with an overwhelming air power. The Allied response was to build up their forces on a massive scale – eventually over 1,300,000 personnel were involved – and to train them to fight in the jungle conditions. Their counter-offensive, launched in 1944, culminated in the battles at Imphal and Kohima which turned the course of the conflict, and the reconquest of Burma was achieved just before the atom bomb was dropped.

Benz und Daimler, zwei Namen, die untrennbar mit der Entwicklung des Automobils zusammenhängen.
Im Jahre 1883 gründet Carl Benz die "OHG Benz und Cie., Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik in Mannheim". Im Jahre 1887 erfolgt die Fertigung der ersten Personenwagen; 1894 beginnt die Lastwagenherstellung. Der erste Benz-Lkw. mit 4-Zylinder-Dieselmotor verläßt 1923 das Werk.
Gottlieb Daimler gründet im Jahre 1890 in Bad Cannstatt die "Daimler-Motoren-Gesell-schaft" und beginnt im gleichen Jahr mit der Fertigung von Personenwagen. 1901 erscheint der erste "Mercedes", ein Sport- und Touren wagen, der nun allen Daimler-Fahrzeugen den Namen gibt. Der Mercedes-Stern wird 1909 eingeführt.

There have been many books written about German forces fighting on the Eastern Front. This is hardly surprising considering the enormity of the campaign and the seemingly inexhaustible amount of data and photographs available. Concord is pleased to release one more title, authored by Gordon Rottman, focusing on this crucial campaign in the East. This volume is all about the infantry at the core of Germany's military exploits in the enormous expanse of Russia.
The opening text delves into the complexities of the standard German infantry division. Though usually short on motorized transport, these self-contained combined-arms units fought extremely effectively, penetrating almost to the gates of Moscow. The introduction includes a detailed table of organization listing all major and minor subunits (usefully provided in both English and German). It then proceeds with an annotated description of key divisional components, which is very helpful in understanding how a division is equipped. As is par for this series of books, the collection of black and white photos forms the centerpiece. These photos show infantrymen from the early days of the conflict through to much later periods. Members of many branches are on display, for example, artillery, assault pioneers, military police, antitank, reconnaissance and infantry. The photos reveal a host of interesting details and show weapon systems found in the infanterie division.
This book also features a set of four color plates expertly illustrated by Stephen Andrew. These depict infantrymen and panzer grenadiers in a wide range of uniforms fighting in various seasons and regions. Photo and color plate captions are well detailed and thorough, providing a wealth of information. This is a very helpful book for those wishing to learn more about those soldiers at the "coal face" of Germany's extraordinarily grueling campaign in the East.

With all the "embedded" hoopla, this informative and absorbing study of Edward R. Murrow and his fellow broadcasters at CBS gets back to sources. Bernstein (Grand Eccentrics) and Lubertozzi (The Complete War of the Worlds) give them the lion's share of the credit for inventing broadcast journalism during WWII, and they also document a formidable track record. Murrow himself was first on the scene, in prewar England and later the blitz. He appointed men like William Shirer, in Berlin, and Eric Sevareid, in France, to expand coverage, so that CBS was well positioned when the other radio networks ended European coverage in fear of violating the neutrality act. Sevareid had to get both himself and his wife and newborn twins out of a defeated France, while Shirer was replaced by Howard K. Smith, who barely got over the Swiss border at the time of Pearl Harbor. Less famous names include Larry LeSueur, who spent a year battling shortages, climate and censorship in Stalin's Russia, and Cecil Brown, who swam away from a sinking British warship. "Murrow's boys" (and one woman) also encountered conflicts with the "suits" in New York, including William Paley, president of CBS, and wrestled with the limitations of tape recorders and short-wave transmitters whose technology now seems neolithic. The narrative offers clear journalistic prose throughout, along with 72 well-selected photographs and a 47-track audio CD excerpting significant broadcasts. The authors' handling of the incidents the broadcasters were covering is above-average, backed by CD excerpts of broadcasts on the Anschluss, the invasion of Poland, the blitz, D-Day, the liberation of Buchenwald among other major events. The result is admirable history.
