A series of interviews offering an intimate view of a city people have made their home.

We ask a number of people with connections to London to take us somewhere that's special to them and to talk about the city and their relationship with it.

We hand over the microphone to our guests to talk about their London, the bits they love and hate, their memories, and how it's affected their personal story.

We will hear from a variety of people - some of whom were born here, some who have adopted the city, some famous and some not.

In this weeks programme, Stephen Fry takes us on a tour of St James's, in the heart of London, an area associated with exclusive clubs, fine art and fine wines.

Gerald Dickens, the great, great grandson of the author Charles Dickens, takes us to see the site of the Marshalsea prison. Only a wall now remains of the debtors' prison where the father of 12-year-old Charles was imprisoned, and where the writer set one of his great novels Little Dorrit.

And John Bird, founder of the Big Issue magazine - which is sold by the homeless - takes us on a cycle ride from Notting Hill to the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

by Michael Eaton. Five short plays broadcast to mark the bi-centenary of Charles Dickens's birth. The theme of these plays is the Dickens's changing relationship with the city that fired his imagination. Each of the plays tells a unified, 'stand-alone' story, but it also contributes to an over-arching narrative - organised around the sounds of the city and the life story of the man whose footsteps pounded those streets.

A-Not-Particularly-Taken-Care-of Boy tells how the young Charles visited London as an eight-year old boy, in the care of his uncle. They become separated by the crowds, but with the help of a young gentleman, the terrors of the unknown city become part of a new world of stories. Based on 'Gone Astray' - written in 1853 about events c.1820; 'The Pantomime of Life' - written in 1837 and 'Meditations In Monmouth Street' - Sketches by Boz.

In 1842, the young English novelist, Charles Dickens, was already the most famous writer in the world.

On his first visit to America, Dickens was greeted like a modern rock star, with dazzling receptions in New York, Boston and other cities.

But the trip soon turned sour - Dickens found Americans increasingly uncivilised; they resented the novlist's demand for an international copyright law to protect his works.

The mutual contempt exploded into a transatlantic row when the novelist published two books inspired by the trip.

Simon Watts brings together contemporary accounts of Dickens' visit to America with the help of Professor Jerome Meckier, author of Dickens - An Innocent Abroad.

But he also left another, very different legacy: some of the strangest and most surreal writing in the English language.

At times so cosy and sentimental, Dickens’ novels are full of transgressive desires and fears - murderous rage, anarchic glee, cannibalistic threats, and sexual obsession.

In this documentary-fantasy we bring the danger back to Dickens.

Slipping in and out of his weird and brilliant imagination, we see modern London as he might have done, travelling through the city's streets at night to crack dens and strip-joints as the police sirens wail.

We meet characters from his novels and characters who would be in his novels if he were still alive today.
