Sewing Circles, Dime Suppers, and W. E. B. Du Bois is the often heroic tale of a small group of African Americans who founded and have maintained their church in a small New England town for nearly 140 years. The church is the Clinton African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the town is Great Barrington, Massachusetts--the home town of the leading African American scholar and activist W. E. B. Du Bois. Du Bois attended the church as a youth and wrote about it, these writings being one source for this history. The book gives readers a broad view of the details of the church's history and recounts the story of its growth and declines and revivals within the context of regional history.

Food is not only something we eat, it is something we use to define ourselves. Ingestion and incorporation are central to our connection with the world outside our bodies. Food's powerful social, economic, political and symbolic roles cannot be ignored - what we eat is a marker of power, cultural capital, class, ethnic and racial identity. Bite Me considers the ways in which popular culture reveals our relationship with food and our own bodies and how these have become an arena for political and ideological battles. Drawing on an extraordinary range of material - films, books, comics, songs, music videos, websites, slang, performances, advertising and mass-produced objects - Bite Me invites the reader to take a fresh look at today's products and practices to see how much food shapes our lives, perceptions and identities.

In his landmark Introduction to the American Horror Film, Robin Wood noted that horror "has consistently been one of the most popular and, at the same time, the most disreputable of Hollywood genres." Horror is still immensely popular but its assimilation into our culture continues apace. In Horror Zone, leading international writers on horror take horror out into the world beyond cinema screens to explore the interconnections between the films and modern media and entertainment industries, economies and production practices, cultural and political forums, spectators and fans. They critically examine the ways in which the horror genre functions in all its multifarious forms, for example the Friday the 13th films as modern grand guignol, the relationship between the contemporary horror film and the theme park ride, horror as art house cinema, connections between pornography and the horror film and the place of special effects in this most respectable of Hollywood genres.

Grade 4-7–Eighteen countries, including Brazil, Ethiopia, Norway, and South Korea, are represented in this book that offers recipes as well as some background on how cooking and dining are affected by a nation's climate, geography, culture, and history. Also provided are a few details about the country's typical immigration patterns to the U.S. and how some dishes have been Americanized over time. While the simple black-and-white illustrations depict young people, the recipes are not necessarily for beginners: many require fairly specialized ingredients and/or complicated techniques. There is a good balance of main dishes, side dishes, vegetarian meals, and sweets. Safety rules, step-by-step instructions, preparation times, and lists of utensils needed are given, but nutritional information is not. Diane Simone Vezza's Passport on a Plate (S & S, 1997) is a more attractive book for those who are interested only in recipes from other countries. Mark H. Zanger's The American Ethnic Cookbook for Students (Oryx, 2001) focuses on immigration but is for older readers. Overall, D'Amico's title might be useful for larger collections, especially where the topic is frequently assigned.

This book uses the most recently available data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2004) to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive picture of the diets of Food Stamp Program (FSP) participants in three age groups - children 1-18 years old, adults 19-59 years old, and older adults 60 years and older. The book examines nutrient intakes, diet quality, and food choices. Data are presented for FSP participants and two groups of nonparticipants - those who were income-eligible for the FSP but did not participate, and higher-income individuals who were not eligible for the FSP.

Savannah's popularity as a tourist destination has increased dramatically in the months that John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been on the New York Times best sellers list, and in his introduction to this cookbook, Berendt says Deen's restaurant is one he recommends to visitors as exemplifying "the very heart of Southern cooking." Deen (the Lady) says Southern cooking is "comfort food," and she and her two sons serve homey, completely unpretentious food at their popular downtown restaurant. Many of the recipes she includes here rely on convenience foods (canned soup, Cheese Whiz) and some have been perennial favorites in "community" cookbooks since the Fifties or Sixties.

A controversial art form and provocative cultural phenomenon, graffiti has inestimably influenced our entire environment - from music and fashion to advertising, architecture, and graphic arts. Yet it is an illegal activity, which makes its practitioners wanted criminals. Motivated by a desire for self-expression and recognition, the act of marking one¹s territory is done at the risk of severe consequences including fines and jail time. Graffiti writers are outlaws, unknown artists whose faces are known only to their peers. Treated as criminals by the law and dismissed as artists by the establishment, writers are perceived as either alluring anti-heroes or loathsome vandals, and usually remain anonymous to their audience. But not to photographer Peter Sutherland. With an eye for style, Sutherland captures all of the gritty glory and glamour of the graffiti world and its warriors. Collected for the first time in Autograf: New York City¹s Graffiti Writers, Sutherland presents a never-before-seen chronicle of the people and places that populate New York¹s famed graff scene. Featuring old-school legends FUTURA, STAY HIGH 149, LADY PINK and DOZE, as well as COPE 2, KAWS, CYCLE, CLAW, VFR, KR, EARSNOT, SERF, RATE, SACER, UFO, and DSENSE, among many others, each one of the fifty-three portraits is authentically tagged by the individual writers using the same paint markers that brought them fame. Complemented by over fifty landscape photographs and featuring handwritten text by legendary recluse REVS, Autograf is the only book to showcase New York City¹s graffiti scene as it was created and defined by some of the most prolific artists of our time.

There are undercurrents and peripheral taste preferences that are a defining part of our individual and collective cultural experience. Music is no exception. Professor George Plasketes adapts the iconic 'A-side/B-side' dichotomy from the 45 r.p.m. for use as a unique conceptual, critical, historical, and cultural framework for exploring and threading together a variety of popular music and media texts. The profiles and perspectives focus on the peripheries; on texts which might be considered 'B-sides' - overlooked, under appreciated, and unsung cases, creators, patterns and productions that have unassumingly, but significantly, marked popular culture, music and media during the past 40 years. The under appreciated yet enduring contributions of a variety of creative individuals in music, television and film are a centerpiece of this volume: actress Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher, a 1960s music producer whose imprint is on the surf, country blues, garage pop and most importantly the folk rock genre; Hans Fenger's kid chorus cover project, a musical variation of 'outsider art' that became representative of the tribute wave that began in the 1990s and continues today; versatile guitarist virtuoso Ry Cooder's extensive film soundtrack work; World Music 'missionary efforts' of American artists beyond Paul Simon's Graceland, including Neil Diamond's precursor with Tap Root Manuscript in the 1970s and the exotic adventures of Henry Kaiser and David Lindley in Madagascar and Norway - to name just a few examples. These B-sides represent undercurrents, but they resonate as overtones in the mainstream of music and culture, many as historical hinges. Collectively, these B-sides are an A-side antidote of outskirt observations, individual snapshots of artists, artifacts and rituals, genres and generations, producers and musical productions in television, film and video. They constitute an important connect-the-dots cultural chronicle with a multi-layered context - social, legal, historic, economic, technological, generational, aesthetic - for interpreting the interrelations between creators and institutions, the music market place, the production of culture and important connections between the peripheral and the popular.

For more than forty years Bruce Jackson has been documenting—in books, photographs, audio recording, and film—inmates’ lives in American prisons. In November, 1975, he acquired a collection of old ID photos while he was visiting the Cummins Unit, a state prison farm in Arkansas. They are published together for the first time in this remarkable book.

The 121 images that appear here were likely taken between 1915 and 1940. As Jackson describes in an absorbing introduction, the function of these photos was not portraiture—their function was to “fold a person into the controlled space of a dossier.” Here, freed from their prison “jackets,” and printed at sizes far larger than their originals, these one-time ID photos have now become portraits. Jackson’s restoration transforms what were small bureaucratic artifacts into moving images of real men and women.

Pictures from a Drawer also contains an extraordinary description of everyday life at Cummins prison in the 1950s, written originally by hand and presented to Jackson in 1973 by its author, a long-time inmate.

A follow-up to 2004's The Early Exploration of Inland Washington Waters: Journals and Logs from Six Expeditions, 1786-1792 and 2007's With Vancouver in Inland Washington Waters: Journals of 12 Crewmen, April-June 1792, this book offers another significant addition to maritime history in the Pacific Northwest. It follows naval officer and explorer Charles Wilkes, an experienced nautical surveyor who led the Wilkes Expedition through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Puget Sound, the Columbia River, and other inland Washington waters in 1841. This book includes the journals of Charles Wilkes and ten of his crewmen, including Augustus L. Case, George Colvocoresses, George T. Sinclair, and other esteemed naval officers. Special attention is given to the many place names that Wilkes originated. The book also includes eighteen of the Wilkes Expedition's charts, the quality of which reflects the crew's careful attention to accuracy. Finally, it includes a complete muster list of the officers and crewmen attached to the Wilkes Expedition, featuring name, title, and, in most cases, a brief synopsis of the man's activity within the expedition.
