Victoria Fontan - Voices from Post-Saddam Iraq, Li ving with Terrorism, Insurgency, and New Forms of Tyranny (2008).jpg

USA Books - Victoria Fontan - Voices from Post-Saddam Iraq, Living... Terrorism, Insurgency, and New Forms of Tyranny 2008.jpg

Even today, most Americans can not understand just why the fighting continues in Iraq, whether our nation should be involved there now, and how we could change our tactics to help establish a lasting peace in the face of what many fear will become a full-fledged civil war. In the book at hand, Victoria Fontan - a professor of peace and conflict studies who lived, worked and researched in Iraq - shares pointed insights into the emotions of Iraq's people, and specifically how democratization has in that country come to be associated with humiliation. Including interviews with common people in Iraq this work makes clear how laudable intentions do not always bring the desired result when it comes to international conflict and cross-cultural psychology. For example, Fontan explains, one might consider the comment of a young Shiite: The greatest humiliation of all was to see foreigners topple Saddam, not because we loved him, but because we could not do it ourselves.

This gripping text is focused on a new and growing area of human psychology - humiliation studies. In it, this leader at the United Nations-mandated University for Peace spotlights aspects of U.S. actions - and Iraqi perceptions - that have fueled ongoing conflict and left some increasingly outspoken residents of the U.S., and the rest of the world, demanding that foreign forces be withdrawn and the Iraqis left to their own accord. The work examines issues including how and when the Iraqis began to see the United States, as not a liberator but as an occupier; how both Abu Ghraib and our ensuing handling of the scandal heightened Iraqi humiliation and fighting; how we've fueled the ethno-religious unrest that still rages today; and how the Post-Saddam elections paved the way for civil war. Fontan also describes the role of women in Iraq who may ultimately be an important key to peace and explains her views on the new role the U.S. may play to better help establish peace.

Doug Stokes - America's Other War, Terrorizing Col ombia (2005).jpg

This controversial book maintains that in Colombia the US has long supported a pervasive campaign of state violence directed against both armed insurgents and a wide range of unarmed progressive social forces. While the context may change from one decade to the next, the basic policies remain the same: maintain the pro-US Colombian state, protect US economic interests and preserve strategic access to oil. Colombia is now the third largest recipient of US military aid in the world, and the largest by far in Latin America. Using extensive declassified documents, this book shows that the so-called "war on drugs", and now the new war on terror in Colombia are actually part of a long-term Colombian "war of state terror" that predates the end of the Cold War with US policy contributing directly to the human rights situation in Colombia today.

Men-at-arms 173 - Philip J. Haythornthwaite - The Alamo and the War of Texan Independence, 1835-36 ( 1992).jpg

In 1823 Texas was opened to American settlement; over the next 12 years thousands took advantage of the opportunity. During this time the corrupt Santa Anna rose to power. A dishonest and ruthless politician, thief, compulsive gambler, opium addict and liar, he nevetheless gained a measure of popular support and set about destroying federalism. Conflict with the American settlers ('Texians') became inevitable, a conflict which included the legendary Battle of the Alamo. Philip Haythornwaite covers the story of the War of Texan Independence in a volume backed by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight full page colour plates by Paul Hannon

Jacqueline Olds, Richard S. Schwartz - The Lonely America, Drifting Apart in the Twenty-first Centur y (2009).jpg

USA Books - Jacqueline Olds, Richard S. Schwartz - The Lonely Amer...rica, Drifting Apart in the Twenty-first Century 2009.jpg

The personal and societal effects of the unheralded epidemic of social isolation in America

In today's world, it is more acceptable to be depressed than to be lonely-yet loneliness appears to be the inevitable byproduct of our frenetic contemporary lifestyle. According to the 2004 General Social Survey, one out of four Americans talked to no one about something of importance to them during the last six months. Another remarkable fact emerged from the 2000 U.S. Census: more people are living alone today than at any point in the country's history-fully 25 percent of households consist of one person only. In this crucial look at one of America's few remaining taboo subjects-loneliness-Drs. Jacqueline Olds and Richard S. Schwartz set out to understand the cultural imperatives, psychological dynamics, and physical mechanisms underlying social isolation.

In The Lonely American, cutting-edge research on the physiological and cognitive effects of social exclusion and emerging work in the neurobiology of attachment uncover startling, sobering ripple effects of loneliness in areas as varied as physical health, children's emotional problems, substance abuse, and even global warming. Surprising new studies tell a grim truth about social isolation: being disconnected diminishes happiness, health, and longevity; increases aggression; and correlates with increasing rates of violent crime. Loneliness doesn't apply simply to single people, either-today's busy parents "cocoon" themselves by devoting most of their non-work hours to children, leaving little time for friends, and other forms of social contact, and unhealthily relying on the marriage to fulfill all social needs.

As a core population of socially isolated individuals and families continues to balloon in size, it is more important than ever to understand the effects of a culture that idealizes busyness and self-reliance. It's time to bring loneliness-a very real and little-discussed social epidemic with frightening consequences-out into the open, and find a way to navigate the tension between freedom and connection in our lives.

James M. McCaffrey - Inside the Spanish-American W ar, A History Based on First-person Accounts (2009 ).jpg

This is the story of the Spanish-American War, told not from the perspective of generals, policy makers, or politicians, but from that of the soldiers, sailors and marines in the field and the reporters who covered their efforts. Concentration on the daily lives of these people provides insight into the often overlooked facets of a soldier's life, detailing their training and interaction with weaponry, their food, clothing, and medical supplies, and their personal interactions and daily struggles. While the Spanish-American War set the stage for America's emergence as a global power, this is its history on an individual scale, as seen through the eyes of those upon whom the war had the most immediate impact - the soldiers who fought and died in it, and the journalists who documented their stories.

Steven E. Woodworth, Wesley K. Clark - Sherman (20 09).jpg

"A fast-paced look at the military career of Grant’s most trusted, effective subordinate, the latest from the publisher’s handy Great Generals Series." -- Kirkus Reviews

"An excellent brief life of a major and controversial figure.” --Booklist

"With the clarity and lucidity of style that has become his hallmark, Steven Woodworth has given us a splendid brief biography of William T. Sherman. Concise without sacrificing important details, this book analyzes the qualities of personality and leadership that made Sherman a great general and an essential partner with Ulysses S. Grant to win the Civil War." -- James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom and Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief

"Military historian Steven E. Woodworth has cracked the code of one of the Civil War's best-known, complex, and most controversial commanders -- William Tecumseh Sherman. A larger-than-life figure of decided opinions, prejudices and passions, Sherman was also a sharp strategic thinker with the character and wherewithal to put his thoughts into action. That he changed the course of the Civil War there is no doubt, neither is there any question that Woodworth has fully captured the man with concision, precision, and style." -- Noah Andre Trudeau, author of Southern Storm: Sherman's March to the Sea and Gettsyburg: A Testing of Courage

"It has long been evident that Steve Woodworth has a mastery of Civil War history that allows him to write on any aspect of it with vast knowledge, understanding, perception, accuracy, and dramatic flair. He has brought all of that skill into play again in this gem of a military biography. To read it is to cut through the myth and see the real William T. Sherman." -- John C. Waugh, author of The Class of 1846: From West Point to Appomattox--Stonewall Jackson, George McClellan and Their Brothers

Jack Cafferty - Now or Never, Getting Down to the Business of Saving Our American Dream (2009).jpg

In his bestselling It's Getting Ugly Out There, CNN’s Jack Cafferty skewered the liars and losers who were trying to harm the nation and explained why Americans had to take their country back. While the Bush exit from the White House brings a certain sense of "mission accomplished," for Cafferty that's only the beginning.

In Now or Never, the curmudgeonly Cafferty applies his heat-seeking scrutiny to the hot-button issues that top the 2009 agenda, including the economy, China, Iraq, the war on terror, and our broken immigration, education, and healthcare systems. Will Obama turn things around or will it be business as usual? Will a hitherto spineless Democratic Congress hold individuals accountable for abuses of power? Cafferty gives voice to the fears and hopes of Americans from all around the country; he also gets personal with moving stories of his experiences raising kids with values that seem to be disappearing in our culture.

Powerful, provocative, and drawing on the latest news from America and around the world, Now or Never makes lively reading for Cafferty fans and everyone who cares about America today.

Peter O. Koch - Imaginary Cities of Gold, The Span ish Quest for Treasure in North America (2009).jpg

Spanish conquistadors attempted to conquer the New World nearly a century before the English colonists established a permanent settlement at Jamestown. This book examines the unsuccessful elements of Spain's attempt at expanding its empire in the Americas, focusing particularly on the misadventures of three conquistadors. Part One tells the story of Cabeza de Vaca who, along with three other survivors of the ill-fated Panfilo de Narvaez expedition to Florida, spent nearly eight years among the various tribes that wandered across Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico before finding his way back to civilization. Their tales of lands rich with earthly delights served as inspiration for two epic but failed expeditions that make up the second and third parts of the book: Francisco de Coronado's quest to find the golden cities of Cibola and Hernando de Soto's efforts to find the rich kingdoms of Florida.

Alan Huffman - Sultana, Surviving the Civil War, P rison, and the Worst Maritime Disaster in American History (2009).jpg

USA Books - Alan Huffman - Sultana, Surviving the Civil War, Priso...d the Worst Maritime Disaster in American History 2009.jpg

A powerful account of a surprisingly forgotten tragedy of the Civil War

A stunning wartime account of human endurance and adventure, and an exploration of just how much the human body and mind can take, Sultana follows several young Union soldiers through the Civil War and what was, for them, its unimaginably disastrous aftermath. We see them enlist and then almost immediately be plunged into a cascading series of wartime horrors: Battle, trauma, prison camp, and, finally, the sinking of the Sultana, the steamboat that was taking them back home.

On an April night in 1865, the Sultana slowly moved up the dark Mississippi, its overtaxed engines straining under the weight of a human cargo that included an estimated twenty-four hundred passengers—more than six times the number it was designed to carry. Most were weak, emaciated Union soldiers, recently paroled from Confederate prison camps, on their way home after enduring the violence of war. At two a.m., three of Sultana's four boilers exploded. Within twenty minutes, it went down in fire and water, taking an estimated seventeen hundred lives.

The sinking of the Sultana remains the worst maritime disaster in American history, yet due to a confluence of contemporary events (Lincoln had recently been assassinated and the war had ended), it soon faded into relative obscurity. Now Alan Huffman presents this harrowing story against the backdrop of the endless suffering already endured by its survivors. Using contemporary research as well as digging deep into archives and family keepsakes, Huffman paints a gripping portrait of the young men who made it home alive.

Art T. Burton - Black Gun, Silver Star, The Life a nd Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves (2008).jpg

Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves appears as one of “eight notable Oklahomans,” the “most feared U.S. marshal in the Indian country.” That Reeves was also an African American who had spent his early life as a slave in Arkansas and Texas makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable. Bucking the odds (“I’m sorry, we didn’t keep black people’s history,” a clerk at one of Oklahoma’s local historical societies answered a query), Art T. Burton sifts through fact and legend to discover the truth about one of the most outstanding peace officers in late nineteenth-century America—and perhaps the greatest lawman of the Wild West era.

Lawrence Gushee - Pioneers of Jazz, The Story of t he Creole Band (2005).jpg

Thanks to the pioneering tours of the Creole Band, jazz began to be heard nationwide on the vaudeville stages of America from 1914 to 1918. This seven-piece band toured the country, exporting for the first time the authentic jazz strains that had developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. The band's vaudeville routines were deeply rooted in the minstrel shows and plantation cliches of American show business in the late 19th century, but its instrumental music was central to its performance and distinctive and entrancing to audiences and reviewers.
Pioneers of Jazz reveals at long last the link between New Orleans music and the jazz phenomenon that swept America in the 1920s. While they were the first important band from New Orleans to attain national exposure, The Creole Band has not heretofore been recognized for its unique importance. But in his monumental, careful research, jazz scholar Lawrence Gushee firmly establishes the group's central role in jazz history.
Gushee traces the troupe's activities and quotes the reaction of critics and audiences to their first encounters with this new musical phenomenon. While audiences often expected (and got) a kind of minstrel show, the group transcended expectations, taking pride in their music and facing down the theatrical establishment with courage. Although they played the West Coast and Canada, most of their touring centered in the heartland. Most towns of any size in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana heard them, often repeatedly, and virtually all of their appearances were received with wild enthusiasm. After four years of nearly incessant traveling, members of the band founded or joined groups in Chicago's South Side cabaret scene, igniting the craze for hot New Orleans music for which the Windy City was renowned in the early 1920s. The best-known musicians in the group--cornetist Freddie Keppard, clarinetist Jimmy Noone and string bassist Bill Johnson--would play a significant role in jazz, becoming famous for recordings in the 1920s. Gushee effectively brings to life each member of the band and discusses their individual contributions, while analyzing the music with precision, skillful and exacting documentation. Including many never before published photos and interviews, the book also provides an invaluable and colorful look at show business, especially vaudeville, in the 1910s.
While some of the first jazz historians were aware of the band's importance, attempts to locate and interview surviving members (three died before 1935) were sporadic and did little or nothing to correct the mostly erroneous accounts of the band's career. The jazz world has long known about Gushee's original work on this previously neglected subject, and the book represents an important event in jazz scholarship. Pioneers of Jazz brilliantly places this group's unique importance into a broad cultural and historical context, and provides the crucial link between jazz's origins in New Orleans and the beginning of its dissemination across the country.
