Robert A. Williams, Jr - Like a Loaded Weapon, The Rehnquist Court, Indian Rights, and the Legal His tory of Racism in America (2005).jpg

USA Books - Robert A. Williams, Jr - Like a Loaded Weapon, The Reh...ghts, and the Legal History of Racism in America 2005.jpg

Robert A. Williams Jr. boldly exposes the ongoing legal force of the racist language directed at Indians in American society. Fueled by well-known negative racial stereotypes of Indian savagery and cultural inferiority, this language, Williams contends, has functioned “like a loaded weapon” in the Supreme Court’s Indian law decisions.

Beginning with Chief Justice John Marshall’s foundational opinions in the early nineteenth century and continuing today in the judgments of the Rehnquist Court, Williams shows how undeniably racist language and precedent are still used in Indian law to justify the denial of important rights of property, self-government, and cultural survival to Indians. Building on the insights of Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, and Frantz Fanon, Williams argues that racist language has been employed by the courts to legalize a uniquely American form of racial dictatorship over Indian tribes by the U.S. government.

Williams concludes with a revolutionary proposal for reimagining the rights of American Indians in international law, as well as strategies for compelling the current Supreme Court to confront the racist origins of Indian law and for challenging bigoted ways of talking, thinking, and writing about American Indians.

Robert A. Williams Jr. is professor of law and American Indian studies at the James E. Rogers College of Law, University of Arizona. A member of the Lumbee Indian Tribe, he is author of The American Indian in Western Legal Thought: The Discourses of Conquest and coauthor of Federal Indian Law.

Elisabeth Mudimbe Boyi - Beyond Dichotomies, Histo ries, Identities, Cultures, and the Challenge of G lobalization (2002).jpg

USA Books - Elisabeth Mudimbe Boyi - Beyond Dichotomies, Histories...ies, Cultures, and the Challenge of Globalization 2002.jpg

Confronts the cultural challenges of globalization.

Beyond Dichotomies examines literary texts, cultural production, and concrete local practices within the context of modernity and globalization by focusing on the ways in which some societies confront the complexity of cultures reflected in new forms of knowledge, narratives, and subjectivities. The contributors explore how particular societies negotiate the relations between the global and the local, and use a geographical, comparative perspective combined with an interdisciplinary approach to offer a diversity of views and illuminate the cultural impact of globalization on different societies around the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. These societies face complex questions regarding people's histories, identities, and cultures that embody the ambivalence, contradictions, and anxieties generated by the process of globalization. The contributors provide a compelling conclusion for a rethinking and reconfiguration of cultures and intercultural relations in today's global world in which dichotomized representations coexist with a discourse of globalization.

H. Samy Alim - Global Linguistic Flows Hip Hop Cul tures, Youth Identities, And the Politics of Langu age (2008).jpg

USA Books - H. Samy Alim - Global Linguistic Flows Hip Hop Culture..., Youth Identities, And the Politics of Language 2008.jpg

Located at the intersection of sociolinguistics and Hip Hop Studies, this cutting-edge book moves around the world - spanning Africa, Asia, Australia, the Americas and the European Union - to explore Hip Hop Cultures, youth identities, the politics of language, and the simultaneous processes of globalization and localization. Focusing closely on language, these scholars of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, (Hip Hop) cultural studies, and critical pedagogies offer linguistic insights to the growing scholarship on Hip Hop Culture, while reorienting their respective fields by paying closer attention to processes of globalization and localization. The book engages complex processes such as transnationalism, (im)migration, cultural flow, and diaspora in an effort to expand current theoretical approaches to language choice and agency, speech style and stylization, codeswitching and language mixing, crossing and sociolinguistic variation, and language use and globalization. Moving throughout the Global Hip Hop Nation, through scenes as diverse as Hong Kong's urban center, Germany's Mannheim inner-city district of Weststadt, the Brazilian favelas, the streets of Lagos and Dar es Salaam, and the hoods of the San Francisco Bay Area, this global intellectual cipha breaks new ground in the ethnographic study of language and popular culture.

Frances Fox Piven - Challenging Authority, How Or dinary People Change America (2008).jpg

Challenging Authority argues that ordinary people exercise real power in American politics mainly at those extraordinary moments when they rise up in anger and hope; defy the rules that ordinarily govern their daily lives; and, by doing so, disrupt the workings of the institutions in which they are enmeshed. These are the conditions that produce the democratic moments in American political development.

Charles Cook - The Essential Guide to Wilderness C amping and Backpacking in the United States (1994).jpg

From Library Journal The first half of this guide gives information on how to go about backpacking and camping-what kind of pack to buy (though no brand names or models are mentioned), food to eat, boots to wear, and so forth. The second half lists places where wilderness can be experienced-e.g., national parks and forests, state parks-with addresses and phone numbers. On the one hand, this is all anyone needs to know about backpacking; on the other, the coverage is cursory. Traditionally, the "how" is covered in separate books such as Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills (Mountaineers, 1992), while the "where" is handled by local or regional guidebooks. While the author certainly knows his stuff (he's professionally led more than 700 trips in the Northeast), he may be biting off too much. It's just too difficult to evaluate critically a two million-acre wilderness in a couple of paragraphs. Recommended for beginning "practitioners" and the most comprehensive of libraries.

Lindsey Claire Smith - Indians, Environment, and I dentity on the Borders of American Literature, Fro m Faulkner and Morrison to Walker and Silko (2008).jpg

USA Books - Lindsey Claire Smith - Indians, Environment, and Ident..., From Faulkner and Morrison to Walker and Silko 2008.jpg

Indians, Environment, and Identity on the Borders of American Literature foregrounds amalgamation among American Indians, African Americans, and Euramericans as a central feature of American literature. The authors discussed, including James Fenimore Cooper, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Leslie Marmon Silko, place this cross-cultural contact in nature, not only collapsing cultural and racial boundaries, but also complicating divisions between “wilderness” and “civilization.” Responding to contemporary theoretical approaches to race, culture, and nationhood, this book points toward the multiple perspectives and cultures that distinguish American literature. Smith highlights the role of geography in these critical discourses, forging a connection between ecological theory and ethnic studies.

David Dranove - Code Red, An Economist Explains Ho w to Revive the Healthcare System without Destroyi ng It (2008).jpg

USA Books - David Dranove - Code Red, An Economist Explains How to...vive the Healthcare System without Destroying It 2008.jpg

The U.S. healthcare system is in critical condition--but this should come as a surprise to no one. Yet until now the solutions proposed have been unworkable, pie-in-the-sky plans that have had little chance of becoming law and even less of succeeding. In Code Red, David Dranove, one of the nation’s leading experts on the economics of healthcare, proposes a set of feasible solutions that address access, efficiency, and quality.

Dranove offers pragmatic remedies, some of them controversial, all of them crucially needed to restore the system to vitality. He pays special attention to the plight of the uninsured, and proposes a new direction that promises to make premier healthcare for all Americans a national reality. Setting his story against the backdrop of healthcare in the United States from the early twentieth century to the present day, he reveals why a century of private and public sector efforts to reform the ailing system have largely failed. He draws on insights from economics to diagnose the root causes of rising costs and diminishing access to quality care, such as inadequate information, perverse incentives, and malfunctioning insurance markets. Dranove describes the ongoing efforts to revive the system--including the rise of consumerism, the quality movement, and initiatives to expand access--and argues that these efforts are doomed to fail without more fundamental, systemic, market-based reforms. Code Red lays the foundation for a thriving healthcare system and is indispensable for anyone trying to make sense of the thorny issues of healthcare reform.

USA Books - Eric Wickham - Dead Fish and Fat Cats, A No-Nonsense J...urney Through Our Dysfunctional Fishing Industry 2002.jpg

Dead Fish and Fats Cats is a lively, no holds barred account of the experiences and entanglements of Eric Wickham, a commercial fisherman who fished for salmon, halibut and sablefish for over fifty years. It describes the unpredictable life of independent commercial fishermen and chastises the fishing bureaucrats for their mismanagement of the fishing industry. Dead Fish and Fat Cats provides a first hand look at the world of coastal fishing, describing everything from electronic fishing gadgets and fishing boats to fish farms. The book also answers the question: "Where have all the salmon gone?" and explains how we have moved from fish in abundance to scarcity and barrenness. The author proposes some innovative methods of dealing with some of the problems that plague the fishing industry.

Magdalena Nowicka, Maria Rovisco - Cosmopolitanism in Practice (2009).jpg

What makes people cosmopolitan? How is cosmopolitanism shaping everyday life experiences and the practices of ordinary people?Making use of empirical research, "Cosmopolitanism in Practice" examines the concrete settings in which individuals display cosmopolitan sensibilities and dispositions, illustrating the ways in which cosmopolitan self-transformations can be used as an analytical tool to explain a variety of identity outlooks and practices. The manner in which both past and present cosmopolitanisms compete with meta-narratives such as nationalism, multiculturalism and religion is also investigated, alongside the employment of cosmopolitan ideas in situations of tension and conflict. With an international team of contributors, including Ulrich Beck, Steven Vertovec, Rob Kroes and Natan Sznaider, this book draws on a variety of intellectual disciplines and international contexts to show how people embrace and make use of cosmopolitan ideas and attitudes.

Concord - Mini Color Series 7510 - Carl Schule - H MMWV, Workhorse of the US Army (2002).jpg

In March of 1983 the US Army Tank, Automotive & Armaments Command signed a US $1.2 billion contract with the AM General Division of LTV Aerospace, which today is the AM General Corporation. The mission was to produce 55.000 M998 Series High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, in short HMMWV. These were to be delivered in five basic variants and 15 different configurations over a five-year period. Of the 55.000 vehicles produced, the US Air Force received approximately 1.100. while 11.000 went to the USMC and the remainder to the US Army. This contract, and the introduction into service in 1985 of the first of more than 150,000 HMMWVs. marked the beginning of its popularity, which is topped only by that of the legendary Jeep.

Concord - Mini Color Series 7513 - Carl Schulze, R alph Zwilling - US Army HMMWV's in Iraq (2005).jpg

After its introduction into U.S. Army service in 1985, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV for short) became the prime utility vehicle of U.S. ground forces. The HMMWV replaced the M151 Ford MUTT, the M274 Mule, the M561 Gama Goat, and to some extent the M880 pickup trucks. Since series production of the HMMWV started in 1985, the vehicle has been produced in a basic M998 model along with various other variants, as well as in the upgraded M998A1 and M998A2 models and their associated variants. Also manufactured by AM General were Expanded Capacity Vehicles and Up-armored models. By June 2004, more than 175,000 HMMWVs had been produced by AM General Corporation in Mishawaka, Indiana, USA. (This total includes HMMWVs of the basic series as well as of the newer A1 and A2 series). While the bulk of these fore mentioned HMMWVs are in service with the U.S. Armed Forces, some 30,000 are also used by more than 40 different nations worldwide. In November 2000, the U.S. Army signed a contract for the production of 31,474 additional HMMWVs, of which 18,000 had been delivered by June 2004. The last of the vehicles covered by this contract will be delivered by 2007.

Between March and May 2003. U.S.-led Coalition Forces invaded Iraq to end the reign of Saddam Hussein and his ruthless regime. One reason for the Coalition's decisive and quick victory was the overwhelming strength and capabilities of the U.S. military machine, a force that is so well designed to fight and win a conventional war. During the initial assault on Iraq, some 140 U.S. troops were killed, while official sources claimed that some fifteen armored fighting vehicles like the M1A1 Abrams MBT or the M2A20DS Bradley IFV were lost to hostile fire. In military terms, it could be said that this was an acceptable toll when taking into account the fact that the forces of a whole country were totally destroyed in the brief campaign.

Concord - Mini Color Series 7519 - Carl Schulze - Iraq Insurgency (2), US Army Vehicles in Action (2 008).jpg

January 2008: Two years have passed since the first volume of the two-part work, "Iraq Insurgency: U.S. Army Armored Vehicles in Action", has been published. Still the struggle for peace in Iraq has not come to an end, and the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq has risen to some 3960. In addition 29.000 U.S. personnel have been wounded in combat operations.
But U.S., Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) have not been the only ones targeted. In 2006. sectarian violence between Shiites and Sunnis escalated further. On 22 February 2006, the gold-covered dome of the holy Al-Askari Mosque in Samarra was destroyed in an attack. In November 2006, one of the deadliest bombings since the beginning of the insurgency caused the deaths of more than 200 people in Sadr City. Baghdad. In the incident, five car bombs were detonated on crowded streets. All over Iraq, areas populated by a mixture of Sunnis and Shiites erupted in violence aimed at terminating minorities so as to let one or the other side gain power in the region. In Baghdad, warring factions were fighting for power in most districts. Even the presence of U.S. and ISF troops did not stop "death squads" from raiding houses of opposing ethnicities and slaughtering inhabitants.

Andrew Johnstone - Dilemmas of Internationalism (2 008).jpg

"Dilemmas of Internationalism" is a new political history of the 1940s which charts and analyses the efforts of private internationalists to define US internationalism and promote the establishment of the United Nations. Internationalists hoped that the United States would shake off the fear of entangling alliances that had characterised the nation's history, replacing isolationism and unilateralism with a new, involved and multilateral approach to foreign affairs.During and after World War II, a number of private individuals and organisations were at the forefront of the fight to change the nature of US foreign policy. This book focuses in particular on the most important internationalist organisation: the American Association for the United Nations (AAUN), known as the League of Nations Association through 1944. It situates the AAUN in the vast network of private organisations promoting an internationalist foreign policy during and after World War II, and analyses the connections between the AAUN and the US government and key public figures who proposed a more internationalist foreign policy. One of the most innovative aspects of "Dilemmas of Internationalism" is its focus on state-private interaction with regard to defining internationalism. Most previous works on wartime internationalism neglect considerations of state-private interaction, or fail to significantly develop them. The study also acts as a corrective to the general neglect of state-private interaction during this period, turning attention away from the common focus on the Cold War to the crucial phase during and immediately after World War II.Beginning with the US entry into the War, this study continues through the onset of the Cold War to early 1948, ending with the passing of the Marshall Plan. By 1948, the path of US internationalism appeared firmly fixed by a Cold War framework, but in 1941, US entry into the Second World War offered the opportunity to develop a more multilateral approach to foreign affairs, and create a more just and peaceful world. This book is a much-needed history of the attempt to seize that opportunity.
