Topics include the borderlands’ environment; its aboriginal and gender history; frontier interactions and comparisons; agricultural and labor relations; tourism; the region as a refuge for Mormons, far-right groups, and Vietnam War resisters; and conservation and natural resources. These areas show how the history and geography of the borderlands region has been transboundary, multidimensional, and unique within North America.

It is no surprise that many fearful American workers see the call center operator in Bangalore or the factory worker in Guangzhou as a threat to their jobs. The emergence of China and India (along with other, smaller developing countries) as economic powers has doubled the supply of labor to the integrated world economy. Economic theory suggests that such a dramatic increase in the supply of labor without an accompanying increase in the supply of capital is likely to exert downward pressure on wages for workers already in the integrated world economy, and wages for most workers in the United States have indeed stagnated or declined. In this book, leading economists Jagdish Bhagwati and Alan S. Blinder offer their perspectives on how the outsourcing of labor and the shifting of jobs to lower-wage countries affect the U.S. economy and what, if any, policy responses are required.

Bhagwati, in his colorful and pithy style, focuses on globalization and free trade, while Blinder, erudite and witty, addresses the significance of labor market adjustment caused by trade. Bhagwati's and Blinder's contributions are followed by comments from economists Richard Freedman, Douglas A. Irwin, Lori G. Kletzer, and Robert Z. Lawrence. Bhagwati and Blinder then respond separately to the issues raised. Benjamin Friedman, who edited this volume (and organized the symposium that inspired it), provides an introduction.

Geisst received a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including Wall Street: A History (Oxford, 1997). He used the founding of the Bank of New York and the New York Stock Exchange in the late eighteenth century as a general start date for this work, although a four-page chronology presents the major events in business history from 1670 through 2005. The "Selected Primary Documents" section includes 15 complete items like the Hudson's Bay Company Charter, 1670; the Pure Food and Drug Act, 1906; Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Forgotten Man" radio speech, 1932; and United States v. Microsoft, 2000. A short bibliography and index complete the volumes.

The quality of scholarship is good, and the list of contributors is impressive, resulting in excellent coverage of business issues and individuals. The rapid pace of change in the field of business, especially the globalization of the marketplace, makes this encyclopedia a worthy addition to any business collection.

All the money spent by the United States space program is not spent looking at the stars. NASA is composed of a vast and varied network of scientists across the academic spectrum involved in research and development programs that have wide application on planet Earth. Several of the leaders in the field of remote sensing and archaeology were recently brought together for a NASA-funded workshop in Biloxi, Mississippi. The workshop was organized specifically to show these archaeologists and cultural resource managers how close we are to being able to "see" under the dirt in order to know where to excavate before ever putting a shovel in the ground. Conn Those official, stereotyprcal reports provide the factual data of a submarine's wartime action but little in the way of human activity and behavior.
For many years the now-dwindling ranks of Halibut shipmates have met in biennial reunion For the conception and continuity of these gatherings we are all greatly indebted to Clayton Rantz and Silvio Gardella. On those occasions each officer and every enlisted man had his own tale to tell his own memory of wartime events that we had shared but had experienced individually. Each man was hungry for a more comprehensive view of Halibut's action than he had at his battle station in engine room, torpedo room, or wherever.
To satrsfy that craving I chose to cover the story of Halibut for the time she was under my command—August, 1943, to December, 1944. With no personal involvement in her earlier days, I could not reconstruct adequately the actions of ship and crew, bold and successful though they were, in the period from her commissioning on April 10, 1942, until August 11, 1943.
The names of many men who contributed importantly to Halibut's success and survival do not appear in my story. They performed their essential tasks in various parts of the ship, often isolated from supportive shipmates. Their' duties were no less important and were frequently more dependent on personal knowledge and initiative than were those which were carried out in my sight on the bridge, in conning tower or control room.

The Second Amendment, which concerns the right of the people to keep and bear arms, has been the subject of great debate for decades. Does it protect an individual’s right to arms or only the right of the states to maintain militias? In this book David C. Williams offers a new reading of the Second Amendment: that it guarantees to individuals a right to arms only insofar as they are part of a united and consensual people, so that their uprising can be a unified revolution rather than a civil war. Williams argues that the Second Amendment has been based on myths about America—the Framers’ belief in American unity and modern interpreters’ belief in American distrust and disunity. Neither of these myths, however, will adequately curb political violence. Williams suggests that the amendment should serve not as a rule of law but as a cultural ideal that promotes our unity on the use of political violence and celebrates our diversity in other areas of life.
