Summary: The Men Behind the Booze
Rating: 5

Great book if you ever wanted to know how and where the names of some of the most popular booze came from. ie. tanqurey, capn morgans, JD, Vermouth, ect

Summary: Great Read!
Rating: 5

This is a great book especially for those of us in the industry; i.e. THE BARTENDERS! If you are always looking for trivia to present to your guests at the bar then buy this book and hit them with some fun facts about what they are drinking. I always wondered why BEEFEATER gin got that name and how the character on the label came to be called a “Beefeater”.
The book is wriiten in down to earth lingo without a lot of tech talk. It is a thoroughly entertaining addition to a mixologists’ reference library.

Summary: My favorite subject
Rating: 5

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the contents informative and entertaining. I have expanded my liquor cabinet greatly due to reading this book. In fact, it made me want to run out and buy a bottle of Booker’s at 1:00am on a work night. This book is an excellent way to learn more about the origins of your favorite spirits.

Benjamin Barr Lindsey, Harvey J. O'Higgins - The B east (2009).jpg

Judge Benjamin Barr Lindsey's expos of big business's influence on Colorado and Denver politics, a best seller when it was originally published in 1911, is now back in print. The Beast reveals the plight of working-class Denver citizens--in particular those Denver youths who ended up in Lindsey's court day after day. These encounters led him to create Denver's Juvenile Court, one of the first courts in the country set up to deal specifically with young delinquents. In addition, Lindsey exposes the darker side of many well-known figures in Colorado history, including Mayor Robert W. Speer, Governor Henry Augustus Buchtel, Will Evans, and many others. When it was first published, The Beast was considered every bit the equal of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and sold over 500,000 copies. More than just a fascinating slice of Denver history, this book--and Lindsey's court-- offered widespread social change in the United States.

Bernard Girard - The Google Way, How One Company I s Revolutionizing Management As We Know It (2009).jpg

Shortly after World War I, Ford and GM created the large modern corporation, with its financial and statistical controls, mass production, and assembly lines. In the 1980s, Toyota stood out for combining quality with continuous refinement. Today, Google is reinventing business yet again-the way we work, how organizations are controlled, and how employees are managed.

Management consultant Bernard Girard has been analyzing Google since its founding in 1998, and now in The Google Way, he explores Google’s innovations in depth-many of which are far removed from the best practices taught at the top business schools.

As you read, you’ll see how much of Google’s success is due to its focus on users and automation. You’ll also learn how eCommerce has profoundly changed the relationship between businesses and their customers, for the first time giving customers an important role to play in a major corporation’s growth. Finally, Girard speculates about the limits of Google’s business model and discusses the challenges it will face as it continues to grow.

Google’s culture is one of innovation. Why not make that spirit of innovation your own?

Cherilyn Walley - The Welsh in Iowa (2009).jpg

The Welsh in Iowa is a history of the little-known Welsh immigrant communities that dot the Iowa countryside. Identifying the qualities that made the Welsh unique as immigrants, migrants, and settlers to North America, Cherilyn Walley analyzes documentary evidence, as well as community and oral histories, in order to examine Welsh culture as it was expressed in middle America by the farmers and coal miners who passed through the prairie state as it grew to maturity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

John Davenport - The Mason-Dixon Line (2004).jpg

Grade 6 Up–Davenport describes how two Englishmen, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, were hired in 1763 to survey and mark the ill-defined border between the British colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland. He explains that this boundary became much more than a line on a map: "The Mason-Dixon Line epitomized antagonism, suspicion, and separation. It… came to symbolize the divergent social, cultural, and economic paths taken by developing America." Background information on the founding of the two colonies, their commonalities such as the impetus for profit and the offering of religious freedom to non-Puritans, biographical narratives of the surveyors, and the drawing of the boundaries comprise the first five chapters. The rest of the book provides a concise summary of several decades of American history that centers around the Mason-Dixon Line, including Westward expansion and the question of whether slavery would be allowed in the territories, the compromises of 1820 and 1850, and the Civil War. Black-and-white photos, reproductions, and maps appear throughout. This clearly written book presents quite a lot of history in a succinct and well-organized text.–Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College

Mark Garrett Longaker - Rhetoric and the Republic. Politics, Civic Discourse and Education in Early America (2007).jpg

USA Books - Mark Garrett Longaker - Rhetoric and the Republic. Pol..., Civic Discourse and Education in Early America 2007.jpg

Contemporary efforts to revitalize the civic mission of higher education in America have revived an age-old republican tradition of teaching students to be responsible citizens, particularly through the study of rhetoric, composition, and oratory. This book examines the political, cultural, economic, and religious agendas that drove the various - and often conflicting - curricula and contrasting visions of what good citizenship entails. Mark Garrett Longaker argues that higher education more than 200 years ago allowed actors with differing political and economic interests to wrestle over the fate of American citizenship. Then, as today, there was widespread agreement that civic training was essential in higher education, but there were also sharp differences in the various visions of what proper republican citizenship entailed and how to prepare for it.

Jane Holtz Kane - Asphalt Nation, How the Automobi le Took Over America and How We Can Take It Back ( 1998).jpg

Asphalt Nation is a powerful examination of how the automobile has ravaged America's cities and landscape over the past 100 years together with a compelling strategy for reversing our automobile dependency. Jane Holtz Kay provides a history of the rapid spread of the automobile and documents the huge subsidies commanded by the highway lobby, to the detriment of once-efficient forms of mass transportation. Demonstrating that there are economic, political, architectural, and personal solutions to the problem, she shows that radical change is entirely possible. This book is essential reading for everyone interested in the history of our relationship with the car, and in the prospect of returning to a world of human mobility.

Commuters, here's some food for thought: collectively, Americans spend more than 8 billion hours each year stuck in traffic. This is just one of the horrifying statistics mentioned in Jane Holtz Kay's Asphalt Nation, an eye-opening look at the relationship between Americans and their cars. Kay asserts that the automobile is destroying our communities, our environment, and our economic competitiveness, and her supporting arguments are pretty persuasive. In addition to the billions of hours wasted in gridlock, Kay notes that our daily drives are becoming longer and more frequent, and that increased mileage has nullified any advances in emission controls. Asphalt Nation is comprised of three parts: the first, "Car Glut: A Nation in Lifelock," examines the impact of the automobile culture on life in the United States today. "Car Tracks: The Machine That Made the Land" traces the history of cars from Henry Ford to the present, while "Car Free: From Dead End to Exit" imagines a happier future without automobile dependency.

What makes Asphalt Nation far more interesting than the typical anti-auto diatribe is Kay's discussion of the cultural mores that helped create America's current car glut--namely, our attitudes toward land use and growth management; her comparisons between American and European practices in these areas are particularly interesting. Others have written about the American love affair with the automobile, but Holtz revisits the discussion with lively writing and a dramatic narrative.

Tom Lansford, Robert P. Watson, Jack Covarrubias - America's War on Terror (2009).jpg

Developing ideas established in the successful first edition, this new version of "America's War on Terror" updates and expands the original collection of essays, allowing the reader to fully understand how the causes of the war on terror, both the domestic and foreign policy implications, and the future challenges faced by the United States have moved on since 2003. The features include: four specifically designed sections which examine the topic from different perspectives and orientations to provide a balanced and nuanced understanding of the issues; new material takes into account events through the election of Barack Obama and potential changes in the US-led war on terror; four additional core chapters look at Homeland Security, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia, Iraq and the Persian Gulf and Globalization, all with a focus on the War on Terror; a robust introduction builds on the previous preface, while the editors have also developed a concluding section that brings together the major themes of the work and provides an overview of future policy challenges and options; the book's existing tables and appendices are also completely updated; and, essays written from a variety of perspectives provide instructors with a useful tool to supplement course materials. The book also offers the student an analytical means with which to understand the factors behind the attacks, the nation's response to them, and the continuing evolving impact of terrorism on domestic and international politics. David Copeland - The Idea of a Free Press, The Enl ightenment and Its Unruly Legacy (2006).jpg

With the introduction of the printing press in England in 1476, a struggle over its control - and its potential for interrupting power - was joined. The written word, once the domain of the upper levels of society that controlled politics, economics, and religion, could be seen passing into the hands of anyone throughout the social strata who wished to voice opinions on any topic of interest or importance. How the advent of printing led to the idea of a free press is the story told by David Copeland in this book, which traces a confrontation that began with issues of religion and gradually expanded into the realm of political freedom. The rise of a free press was, in many ways, a legacy of the Reformation and Enlightenment. Copeland describes a discourse centered on questions of religion - a discussion that the government, with all its religious authority, could not suppress because of the belief that the ability to reason for oneself was God-given. In this account, we see how the debate moved from religion to the purely political sphere, and how, through the increased use of the printing press, it was opened to a multiplicity of voices and opinions. Spanning nearly four centuries in Britain and America, Copeland's book reveals how the tension between government control and the right to debate public affairs openly ultimately led to the idea of a free press; in doing so, it documents an intellectual development of unparalleled relevance and importance to the history of journalism.

Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp, Leigh E. Schmidt, Mark Vale ri - Practicing Protestants, Histories of Christia n Life in America, 1630--1965 (2006).jpg

USA Books - Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp, Leigh E. Schmidt, Mark Valeri -...stories of Christian Life in America, 1630--1965 2006.jpg

This collection of essays explores the significance of practice in understanding American Protestant life. The authors are historians of American religion, practical theologians, and pastors and were the twelve principal researchers in a three-year collaborative project sponsored by the Lilly Endowment.
Profiling practices that range from Puritan devotional writing to twentieth-century prayer, from missionary tactics to African American ritual performance, these essays provide a unique historical perspective on how Protestants have lived their faith within and outside of the church and how practice has formed their identities and beliefs. Each chapter focuses on a different practice within a particular social and cultural context. The essays explore transformations in American religious culture from Puritan to Evangelical and Enlightenment sensibilities in New England, issues of mission, nationalism, and American empire in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, devotional practices in the flux of modern intellectual predicaments, and the claims of late-twentieth-century liberal Protestant pluralism. Breaking new ground in ritual studies and cultural history, Practicing Protestants offers a distinctive history of American Protestant practice.

Elliot E. Slotnick, Jennifer A. Segal - Television News and the Supreme Court. All the News That's F it to Air (1998).jpg

USA Books - Elliot E. Slotnick, Jennifer A. Segal - Television New... the Supreme Court. All the News Thats Fit to Air 1998.jpg

The book relies on rich interviews with network news reporters who have covered the Court, coupled with actual videotapes of network newscast coverage, to develop a unique portrait of the constraints faced by reporters covering the institution as well as a thorough picture of what facets of the Court’s work actually are covered by television news.

The analysis demonstrates convincingly that there are characteristics of the television news industry (such as its heavy reliance on dramatic stories and visuals) that, coupled with the rules and habits of the Supreme Court (such as its refusal to allow cameras in the Court as well as its propensity to announce several critical rulings on the same day) come together to make network news coverage of the Court infrequent, brief, and in too many instances, simply plain wrong.

• Interviews with the nation’s top Supreme Court reporters, as well as the Court’s Public Information Officer
• A detailed content analysis of two full years of television newscast coverage of the Court to develop a thorough portrait of news coverage
• Uses different research approaches ranging from intensive case studies to development of a multivariate model

Richard C. Sinopoli - The Foundations of American Citizenship, Liberalism, the Constitution, and Civ ic Virtue (1992).jpg

USA Books - Richard C. Sinopoli - The Foundations of American Citi..., Liberalism, the Constitution, and Civic Virtue 1992.jpg

This study of exemplary writings from the debates over the ratification of the 1787 Constitution deals with the American constitutional founders' understandings of citizenship and civic virtue. Discussion of these debates is set in an analytical and historical context, addressing the rationales for and the nature of civic allegiance in liberal political regimes. Sinopoli analyzes the development of a distinctly liberal political psychology from its origins in John Locke, Adam Smith, and David Hume through the American founding and traces its implications for the current American polity.
