Snajperskaja Wintowka Dragunowa (kod GRAU 6W1, polska desygnata kbw SWD) – (ros. Снайперская Винтовка Драгунова – Karabin Wyborowy Dragunowa) – skonstruowany w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku radziecki samopowtarzalny karabin wyborowy.

Historia konstrukcji

Na przełomie lat 50. i 60. XX wieku dowództwo Armii Czerwonej postanowiło ogłosić konkurs na nowy samopowtarzalny karabin wyborowy, następcę wyborowej wersji karabinu powtarzalnego Mosin wz. 1891/30. Nowa broń miała być uzbrojeniem jednego z żołnierzy drużyny lub plutonu i umożliwiać skuteczne rażenie celu wielkości człowieka z odległości do 1300 m.

Zadanie zostało powierzone biurom konstrukcyjnym Fiodora Barinowa, Jewgienija Dragunowa i Aleksandra Konstantinowa. Później dołączyło do nich biuro konstrukcyjne Michaiła Kałasznikowa. W roku 1961 do prób dopuszczono konstrukcje Dragunowa i Konstantinowa. Faworytem była konstrukcja Konstantinowa, prostsza i tańsza w produkcji (zastosowano nowoczesne technologie obróbki plastycznej). Jednak w trakcie prób poligonowych okazało się, że karabin Dragunowa jest celniejszy, bardziej niezawodny i trwalszy.
Standardowy celownik optyczny PSO-1 do SWD (x4)

Decyzją z 3 lipca 1961 roku nową broń przyjęto do uzbrojenia Armii Czerwonej jako "Снайперская Винтовка Драгунова". Do karabinu skonstruowano specjalną odmianę naboju 7,62 x 54 mm R oznaczoną jako 7N1 (szefem konstruktorów był Wiktor Sabielnikow). Pocisk naboju 7N1 miał rdzeń ołowiany i stalowy penetrator. Dzięki odmiennej konstrukcji pocisk posiadał lepsze własności przy strzelaniu na duże odległości (broń może strzelać zwykłą amunicją 7,62 x 54 mm R, ale wzrasta wtedy rozrzut).

W następnych latach karabin SWD stał się standardowym uzbrojeniem strzelców wyborowych w większości armii państw Układu Warszawskiego.

Pierwsze egzemplarze karabinu SWD trafiły na wyposażenie Wojska Polskiego w 1965 roku. Zakupiono około 1300 sztuk karabinu, wystarczającą ilość, aby w karabin SWD wyposażyć każdą drużynę piechoty zmechanizowanej.

W następnych latach karabin był produkowany bez większych zmian konstrukcyjnych. Z czasem zastąpiono części drewniane plastikowymi. Zrezygnowano z wyposażania karabinów w zaczep bagnetu. Pojawił się za to zaczep do mocowania dwójnogu. Opracowano nową amunicję wyborową 7N14.

Martin Pegler
Martin Pegler has a BA Hons in Medieval and Modern History and an MA in Museum Studies, both from University College, London, and was for many years the Senior Curator of Firearms at the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds. He now lives in the Somme, France, where he and his wife run a small bed and breakfast, which is situated on top of the old German front line! Martin has established The Somme Historical Centre (www.martinpegler.com), where visitors can see the technology used in the 1914-18 trench warfare. Martin enjoys shooting historic firearms, and has participated in many shooting competitions. He is currently an author and firearms consultant and he also lectures at local Great War museums. In his spare time Martin runs motorcycle tours of the battlefield. He is the author of a number of books including 'The Military Sniper since 1914' (Osprey, 2001), 'Firearms in the American West 1700-1900' (The Crowood Press, 2002), and the highly acclaimed ‘Out of Nowhere: A History of the Military Sniper’ (Osprey, 2004), and he has also contributed to a number of magazines. In the 1980s he had the privilege of interviewing many World War I veterans about their wartime experiences, and the recordings are now part of the sound archives of the Imperial War Museum, London

The M40A1 has to be the pioneer of the modern sniper rifle. The USMC has always had a leg up on the US Army when it comes to sniping (Remember, I am US Army, so it takes a lot to say this!) and the USMC realized that they needed a standard sniper rifle that could perform the job up to standard. After testing and reviews the USMC placed the initial order for 700 Remington 700/M40 sniper rifles in 1966. 550 of those had the redfield 3-9x accurange scope mounted. As time progressed, the weaknesses of the factory M700/40x rifles began to show. The all wood stocks were very prone to shifting in changes in the weather and other weaknesses were noted. So a process began to upgrade the M40 rifles. There is no "official" date (at least that I can tell) when the M40 was replaced by the M40A1, but the process happened in the early 70's. The wood stocks were replaced by McMillan fiberglass stocks, which are known for their ruggedness. The entire system is built by USMC armorers at Quantico, VA. The redfield 3-9x scopes were eventually replaced by a specially designed scope built by Unertl to USMC specifications. This happened in the early 80's and this is was the standard scope being used on the M40A1's and the A3's up until 2006 when the Schmidt & Bender PMII 3-12x scopes were adopted to replace the Unertls.

The M40A1 is an outstanding system, very capable of extreme levels of accuracy, though the older M118 ammo tended to hold the rifle back to about 1 MOA, but the new M118LR (designed by the USMC) really unleashed the potential of these rifles with accuracy improving to about .5 MOA. The Max Effective range of the M40A1 is listed at 800 meters by a lot of sources, but the USMC says 1000yards (915 meters) and I would have to go with the USMC on this one, as we routinely shoot past 900 meters with our M24 SWS, and the M40A1 is everybit as accurate.

The USMC has replaced the aging M40A1's with the new M40A3's. A rifle that has been in the developement stages for some time now. The M40A1's have served extremely well for many years (over 30). She'll be missed, but the A3 is a capable successor.

For those of you who would like to purchase a M40A1 for your own collection, several manufacturers make excellent reproductions of the M40A1, some even built to mil-specs. But you cannot purchase an ORIGINAL M40A1.
