Established in the 1940s by the legendary Stu Hart, Stampede Wrestling was a founding wrestling company that was highly influential. This dramatic account follows Stampede’s blood-on-the-mat saga of more than 50 years, from its grassroots beginnings in Calgary to its rise and bitter fall. Despite hosting some of the biggest names in the sport and developing many modern day wrestling staples, such as ladder matches, the emergence in the 1980s of the wildly popular WWE ultimately doomed the Stampede league to closure. The Hart family crumbled along with the league, with son Owen dying in the ring and other members torn apart by begrudging feuds and internal strife. Full of violence, sex, and drugs, this is a gripping tale of the birth of professional wrestling.

Antony, W. Alumkal - Asian American Evangelical Ch urches, Race, Ethnicity, and Assimilation in the S econd Generation (2003).jpg

O USA - Antony, W. Alumkal - Asian American Evangelical Churches...thnicity, and Assimilation in the Second Generation 2003.jpg

Alumkal examines the beliefs and life experiences of American-born/raised Asian American evangelicals in two congregations, one Chinese American and one Korean American, near New York City. He documents how the culture of American evangelicalism has shaped the worldviews of its second-generation Asian American adherents. The religious beliefs of the individuals in this study were indistinguishable from those of most white evangelicals. These individuals also affirmed the view that Christian identity transcends racial/ethnic lines. Yet, paradoxically, they testified to the significance of race and ethnicity in their lives and saw their churches as places to strengthen ethnic ties. In conclusion, scholars need new theoretical approaches for understanding the post-1965 immigrants and their offspring.

Karen D. Johnson-Webb - Recruiting Hispanic Labor, Immigrants in Non-Traditional Areas (2003).jpg

Johnson-Webb studies the labor recruitment behind the recent surge in immigration to North Carolina. Her qualitative study suggests a strong connection between employer recruitment, a tight labor market, and the growing Hispanic population. Evidence indicates that employers prefer immigrant workers and go to extraordinary lengths to recruit them. However, historical, social, economic and political factors have also contributed to the massive influx of Hispanic immigrants to North Carolina. The policy implications of this study are notable. Policy makers should consider local context when crafting immigration policy, welfare reform policy, and workforce development policy in order for these to be effective.

Jamie Howren, Taylor Baldwin Kiland - Open Doors, Vietnam POWs Thirty Years Later (2005).jpg

OPEN DOORS is a tribute to Vietnam prisoners of war and their individual determination in seeking personal and professional happiness upon their release. A testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of human will, it is also a celebration of freedom. While their experience in captivity has been well documented, historians have largely overlooked the current lives of former Vietnam POWs. Combining photo portraits and insightful profiles of thirty Vietnam-era POWs, Taylor Baldwin Kiland and Jamie Howren offer an intimate look at these men—the longest-held group of returned POWs in our nation"s history—as husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and grandfathers. Subjects include the famous (Sen. John McCain and former vice presidential candidate Vice Adm. James Stockdale) and the not-so-famous. None received celebrity treatment on their liberation; all resumed their lives as private citizens. Most of them have flourished in the face of great challenges, proud of their accomplishments. The book is based on a traveling photographic exhibit that has been touring the United States since October 2003. Rather than dwelling on the torture and suffering of their years in the notorious prison complex known to its inhabitants as the "Hanoi Hilton," the authors focused on commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the POWs’ return to the United States and on celebrating the years of freedom and personal achievement that followed.

This is a timely collection of essays utilizing the political economy approach to military spending, primarily by the United States.
The articles deal specifically with the relationships between defense spending and:
(a) political-business cycles, public opinion and the US-Soviet relationship;
(b) military action - i.e. war;
(c) economic performance - the trade deficit, guns versus butter issues and fiscal policy.

Karen Ordahl Kupperman - The Jamestown Project (20 07).jpg

The Jamestown story needs retelling, says NYU historian Kupperman (Providence Island) not just because 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of its settlement. It also needs retelling because Americans tend to locate our origins in Plymouth and distance ourselves from Jamestown, which we associate with "greedy, grasping colonists" backed by "arrogant" English patrons. The first decade of Jamestown's history was messy, admits Kupperman, but through that mess, settlers figured out how to make colonization work. Plymouth, in fact, benefited from the lessons learned at Jamestown. What is remarkable is that a colonial outpost on the edge of Virginia, in a not very hospitable location, survived at all. Kupperman, of course, shows how the colonists negotiated relationships with Indians. But her more innovative chapters focus on labor. Colonists began experimenting with tobacco, and colonial elites gradually realized that people were more willing to work when they were laboring for themselves. Backers in England began to think more flexibly about how to create colonial profits. But the dark side of this success story is the institution of indentured servitude, which proved key to Jamestown's success. Kupperman, marrying vivid narration with trenchant analysis, has done the history of Jamestown, and of early America, a great service. 41 b&w illus. (Mar.)

Bruce H. Mann - Republic of Debtors, Bankruptcy in the Age of American Independence (2003).jpg

This subtle, wide-ranging study examines changing attitudes towards insolvency and their importance to the economy and self-image of the early American republic. Mann, a professor of law and history at the University of Pennsylvania, shows how debtor-relief movements like Shay's Rebellion, a post-Revolution wave of business failures and the need to pay off the public Revolutionary War debt made the problem of debt central to the politics of the new Republic, while the growth of consumer and credit markets enmeshed ever greater portions of the public in debt. A complex imagery of manhood, honor and dependency surrounded the perception of debt in the public mind, while debtors began to invoke the Rights of Man as an argument against debtors' prison. The result, Mann argues, is that by the end of the 18th century insolvency increasingly came to be viewed as economic misfortune rather than moral failure-but only for some. Bankruptcy laws were written to shield wealthy commercial debtors, while broke farmers and workers continued to face prison. Mann examines the political, class and regional antagonisms surrounding the issues of debt and bankruptcy, and draws on newspapers, popular literature and profiles of individual debtors to evoke the complex emotions aroused by debt. The result is an elegantly written blend of economic, political and cultural history that puts in context a problem that is still with us today.

Johann N. Neem - Creating a Nation of Joiners, Dem ocracy and Civil Society in Early National Massach usetts (2008).jpg

O USA - Johann N. Neem - Creating a Nation of Joiners, Democracy...y and Civil Society in Early National Massachusetts 2008.jpg

A powerful analysis that will reshape our understanding of the transformation of civil society in the early American republic. Neem's study is part of an emerging literature forcing a reconsideration of the classic Tocquevillean account of voluntary association and the state. I am impressed with the depth of the research, the sharpness and acuity of the interpretation, and the clarity of the writing. This is an important book.
--John L. Brooke, Ohio State University

Beautifully conceived and clearly written, Creating a Nation of Joiners is a major contribution to our understanding of the early Republic. Not only does it nicely show how bitterly contested was the struggle over the creation of a civil society, but it contains the best account of the changing nature of the corporation since Oscar and Mary Handlin's Commonwealth. A superb study.

Tom Goyens - Beer and Revolution, The German Anarc hist Movement in New York City, 1880-1914 (2007).jpg

"Beer and Revolution is an extraordinary piece of work, and a rare find. I am astonished at the level of sophistication: it advances recent scholarly developments in charting geopolitical space and resurrects the kind of setting - a mixture of bohemianism and political radicalism - that is of increasing interest to young people today." Paul Buhle, co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left

"This well-researched study of anarchism in New York City makes a significant contribution to the history of radicalism, German ethnicity, and urban culture."--Journal of American History

"Goyens . . . does a masterful job of placing leading anarchists such as Johann Most in a transnational context by detailing both the European and US aspects of their careers. . . . Scholars and students will find this is an interesting, informative book. Highly recommended."--Choice

Squadron - Armor Specials 6096 - David E. Harper - Tank Warfare on Iwo Jima (2008).jpg

This book is one of the Squadron Specials and is in a Vertical soft cover format of 96 pages crammed with superb B&W and Colour photos supported by colour plates representative of the Shermans used by the USMC Units that operated on Iwo Jima and notes such as excerpts from the Battalion after Action Reports.

David Harper has collected many previously unseen photos, including many colour ones of the campaign and woven these throughout the book to present a superb collection of the various USMC Tank Bns and the Japanese 26 Tank Regt. These are supported by excellent captions and a series of excerpts from the Battalion After Action reports which give a great picture of the campaign from the view of the USMC tankers.

A superb series of 14 Colour plates are given with excellent notes on colours, fittings, markings etc and an actual photo of the vehicle depicted which is superb for the modeller and an idea I’d like to see adopted as standard for this type of book. The photographs are present in a large format , typically two to a page which, allows the detail to be seen clearly.

Josh Sides - Erotic City, Sexual Revolutions and t he Making of Modern San Francisco (2009).jpg

Since the 1960s, San Francisco has been America's capital of sexual libertinism and a potent symbol in its culture wars. In this highly original book, Josh Sides explains how this happened, unearthing long-forgotten stories of the city's sexual revolutionaries, as well as the legions of longtime San Franciscans who tried to protect their vision of a moral metropolis. Erotic dancers, prostitutes, birth control advocates, pornographers, free lovers, and gay libbers transformed San Francisco's political landscape and its neighborhoods in ways seldom appreciated. But as sex radicals became more visible in the public spaces of the city, many San Franciscans reacted violently. The assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were but the most brazen acts in a city caught up in a battle over morality. Ultimately, Sides argues, one cannot understand the evolution of postwar American cities without recognizing the profound role that sex has played. More broadly, one cannot understand modern American politics without taking into account the postwar transformation of San Francisco and other cities into both real and imagined repositories of unfettered sexual desire.

Daniel E. Harmon - Hudson River (3004).jpg

From pre-colonial times to the post-industrial age, rivers have shaped the course of American history and culture. Take a fascinating historical journey down the greatest rivers in the United States and learn how they have influenced the people and communities that live and work on them. The histories of these rivers include many of the notable names in American history, such as Lewis & Clark, John Colter, Zebulon Pike, and Tecumseh. The Hudson is only 315 miles long, but it is striking in many aspects. It is justly famous for its remarkable beauty, but its upper reaches also have powered textile and lumber mills for centuries.

Eva Hemmungs Wirtén - No Trespassing, Authorship, Intellectual Property Rights, and the Boundaries o f Globalization (2004).jpg

O USA - Eva Hemmungs Wirtn - No Trespassing, Authorship, Intelle...roperty Rights, and the Boundaries of Globalization 2004.jpg

In this scholarly yet highly accessible work, Eva Hemmungs Wirtén traces three main themes within the scope of cultural ownership: authorship as one of the basic features of print culture, the use of intellectual property rights as a privileged instrument of control, and finally globalization as a pre-condition under which both operate. Underwritten by rapid technological change and increased global interdependence, intellectual property rights are designed to protect a production that is no longer industrial, but informational.
No Trespassing tells the story of a century of profound change in cultural ownership. It begins with late nineteenth-century Europe, exploring cultural ownership in a number of settings across both spatial and temporal divides, and concludes in today's global, knowledge-based society. Wirtén takes an interdisciplinary and international approach, using a wide array of material from court cases to novels for her purposes. From Victor Hugo and the 1886 Berne Convention, to the translation of Peter Høeg?s bestseller Smilla's Sense of Snow, Wirtén charts a history of Intellectual property rights and regulations. She addresses the relationship between author and translator, looks at the challenges to intellectual property by the arrival of the photocopier, takes into account the media conglomerate?s search for content as a key asset since the 1960s, and considers how a Western legal framework interacts with attempts to protect traditional knowledge and folklore. No Trespassing is essential reading for all who care about culture and the future regulatory structures of access to it.

Dean J. Kotlowski - Nixon's Civil Rights, Politics , Principle, and Policy (2002).jpg

"Nixon's Civil Rights is, far and away, the best book written on the topic. Anyone interested in the Civil Rights movement, the 1970s, and the Nixon era will find it indispensable. A truly landmark study." --Douglas Brinkley, University of New Orleans Richard Nixon believed that history would show his administration in the forefront of civil rights progress. What does the record really say about civil rights under Nixon? In a groundbreaking new book, Dean Kotlowski offers a surprising study of an administration that redirected the course of civil rights in America. Nixon's policymaking recast the civil rights debate from an argument over racial integration to an effort to improve the economic station of disadvantaged groups. Kotlowski examines such issues as school desegregation, fair housing, voting rights, affirmative action, and minority businesses as well as Native American and women's rights. He details Nixon's role, revealing a president who favored deeds over rhetoric and who constantly weighed political expediency and principles in crafting civil rights policy. In moving the debate from the street to the system, Nixon set civil rights on a path whose merits and results are still debated. Nixon's Civil Rights is a revealing portrait of one of the most enigmatic figures of modern American politics and a major contribution to the study of civil rights in America.

Philip Hamburger - Separation of Church and State (2002).jpg

In a powerful challenge to conventional wisdom, Philip Hamburger argues that the separation of church and state has no historical foundation in the First Amendment. The detailed evidence assembled here shows that eighteenth-century Americans almost never invoked this principle. Although Thomas Jefferson and others retrospectively claimed that the First Amendment separated church and state, separation became part of American constitutional law only much later. Hamburger shows that separation became a constitutional freedom largely through fear and prejudice. Jefferson supported separation out of hostility to the Federalist clergy of New England. Nativist Protestants (ranging from nineteenth-century Know Nothings to twentieth-century members of the K.K.K.) adopted the principle of separation to restrict the role of Catholics in public life. Gradually, these Protestants were joined by theologically liberal, anti-Christian secularists, who hoped that separation would limit Christianity and all other distinct religions. Eventually, a wide range of men and women called for separation. Almost all of these Americans feared ecclesiastical authority, particularly that of the Catholic Church, and, in response to their fears, they increasingly perceived religious liberty to require a separation of church from state. American religious liberty was thus redefined and even transformed. In the process, the First Amendment was often used as an instrument of intolerance and discrimination.
