One of the most colourful and controversial figures in American intelligence, Herbert O. Yardley (1889-1958) gave America its best form of information, but his fame rests more on his indiscretions than on his achievements. In this highly readable biography, a premier historian of military intelligence tells Yardley's story and evaluates his impact on the American intelligence community. Yardley established the nation's first codebreaking agency in 1917, and his solutions helped the United States win a major diplomatic victory at the 1921 disarmament conference. But when his unit was closed in 1929 because "gentlemen do not read each other's mail", Yardley wrote a best-selling memoir that introduced - and disclosed - codemaking and codebreaking to the public. David Kahn describes the vicissitudes of Yardley's career, including his work in China and Canada, offers a capsule history of American intelligence up to World War I, and gives a short course in classical codes and ciphers. He debunks the accusations that the publication of Yardley's book caused Japan to change its codes and ciphers and that Yardley traitorously sold his solutions to Japan.

Harold Bloom - Edgar Allan Poe (2006).jpg

David Gebhard, Tom Martinson - Guide to the Archit ecture of Minnesota (1978).jpg

This book was conceived from its inception to supplement and augment the Bicentennial exhibition, The Art and Architecture of Minnesota, organized and presented by the University Gallery in conjunction with the Minnesota Society of Architects. The exhibition was more than three years in the planning stages, and at every step our desire was to publish something other than an exhibition catalogue — something at once less ephemeral and more comprehensive yet not boring that ubiquitous person, the "interested layman," with heavily erudite prose. In the end we decided to publish A Guide to the Architecture of Minnesota. Long a priority of the Minnesota Society of Architects, such a guide seemed to us to be the sort of publication which would most nearly meet our needs.

Randall B. Woods - Vietnam and the American Politi cal Tradition, The Politics of Dissent (2003).jpg

Many came to see cold war liberals during the Vietnam War as willing to invoke the democratic ideal, while at the same time tolerating dictatorships in the cause of anticommunism. This volume of essays demonstrates how opposition to the war, the military-industrial complex, and the national security state crystallized in a variety of different and often divergent political traditions. Indeed, for many of the individuals discussed, dissent was a decidedly conservative act in that they felt the war threatened traditional values, mores, and institutions.

Industry luminary Robert Pozen offers his insights on the future of U.S. finance

The recent credit crisis and the resulting bailout program are unprecedented events in the financial industry. While it's important to understand what got us here, it's even more important to consider how we should get out. While there is little question that immediate action was required to stabilize the situation, it is now time to look for a long-term plan to reform the United States financial industry.

That is where Bob Pozen comes in. Perhaps more than anyone in the industry, Pozen commands the respect and attention of the public and private sector. In this timely guide, he outlines his vision for the new financial future and provides actionable advice along the way. To Pozen, there are four high-priority problems that must be addressed, and this book puts them in perspective

* Analyzes alternative models for government stakes in banks
* Recommends a new board structure for large financial institutions
* Examines the importance of broader Fed jurisdiction over systemic risks
* Proposes a way to revive the securitization of loans

With Too Big to Save, you'll learn the likely future of the finance industry and understand why changes have to be made.

George P. Fletcher - Romantics at War, Glory and G uilt in the Age of Terrorism (2002).jpg

America is at war with terrorism. Terrorists must be brought to justice.

We hear these phrases together so often that we rarely pause to reflect on the dramatic differences between the demands of war and the demands of justice, differences so deep that the pursuit of one often comes at the expense of the other. In this book, one of the country's most important legal thinkers brings much-needed clarity to the still unfolding debates about how to pursue war and justice in the age of terrorism. George Fletcher also draws on his rare ability to combine insights from history, philosophy, literature, and law to place these debates in a rich cultural context. He seeks to explain why Americans--for so many years cynical about war--have recently found war so appealing. He finds the answer in a revival of Romanticism, a growing desire in the post-Vietnam era to identify with grand causes and to put nations at the center of ideas about glory and guilt.

Fletcher opens with unsettling questions about the nature of terrorism, war, and justice, showing how dangerously slippery the concepts can be. He argues that those sympathetic to war are heirs to the ideals of Byron, Fichte, and other Romantics in their belief that nations--not just individuals--must uphold honor and be held accountable for crimes. Fletcher writes that ideas about collective glory and guilt are far more plausible and widespread than liberal individualists typically recognize. But as he traces the implications of the Romantic mindset for debates about war crimes, treason, military tribunals, and genocide, he also shows that losing oneself in a grand cause can all too easily lead to moral catastrophe.

A work of extraordinary intellectual power and relevance, the book will change how we think not only about world events, but about the conflicting individualist and collective impulses that tear at all of us.

Harold Bloom - Alice Walker (2007).jpg

Grade 9 Up-A complete research and study guide in one volume. This title includes detailed plot summaries that will be helpful to readers struggling with the books, lists of characters, and excerpts from 25 critical essays on two of Walker's novels-Meridian and The Color Purple-along with a brief biography of the writer and a thematic index. The list of critical voices ranges from Marge Piercy's praise of Walker's writing to Richard Wesley's criticism of the writer's portrayal of black men in The Color Purple to bell hooks's "The Erotic Metaphysic." However, the essays are somewhat limited in that the critics tend to address the subject matter and social concerns of Walker's works more than their artistic merit. Students doing research on one of these books will be glad to have all their work done for them and grateful for the compact package it comes in and libraries will find it chock-full of resources. Serious researchers would be better served by Bloom's Alice Walker (Chelsea, 1990), which includes full-length essays with a little meat on them.
