This is a study of the CIA's relationship with Congress. It encompasses the period from the creation of the Agency until 2004 - the era of the DCIs. When Congress created a new position in December 2004 - the director of national intelligence - to supersede the director of central intelligence (DCI) as head of the US Intelligence Community, it necessarily changed the dynamic between the CIA and the Congress. While the director of the Agency would continue to represent its interests on Capitol Hill, he or she would no longer speak as the head of US intelligence. While 2008 is too early to assess how this change will affect the Agency's relationship with Congress, it is safe to say it will never be quite the same.

Rafael Perez-Torres - Movements in Chicano Poetry, Against Myths, against Margins (1995).jpg

Interpreting specific poems by some of the best known Chicano writers, this book studies the central aesthetic and thematic concerns recent Chicano poetry addresses. Drawing on current theories of postmodernity and postcoloniality, it places a "minority" literature within the central concerns of contemporary literary and cultural studies. The book addresses the most important issues related to Chicano identity, especially focusing on the contribution women writers and thinkers have made in articulating this identity.

Martin Luther King, Jr. - Where Do We Go from Here , Chaos or Community (2010).jpg

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., isolated himself from the demands of the civil rights movement, rented a house in Jamaica with no telephone, and labored over his final manuscript. In this significantly prophetic work, which has been unavailable for more than ten years, we find King’s acute analysis of American race relations and the state of the movement after a decade of civil rights efforts. Here he lays out his thoughts, plans, and dreams for America’s future, including the need for better jobs, higher wages, decent housing, and quality education. With a universal message of hope that continues to resonate, King demanded an end to global suffering, powerfully asserting that humankind—for the first time—has the resources and technology to eradicate poverty.

Anton Horvath, Boris Molnar - Disputing Global War ming (2009).jpg

Global Warming - just that term evokes many people to nod their heads and fret about an impending climate disaster. In this book, the authors address some of the recent media coverage of global warming and Hollywood's involvement in the issue. Included is a discussion on former Vice President Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth". Recently, advocates of alarmism have grown increasingly desperate to try to convince the public that global warming is the greatest moral issue of our generation. During the past year, the American people have been served up an unprecedented parade of environmental alarmism by the media and entertainment industry, which link every possible weather event to global warming. The year 2006 saw many major organs of the media dismiss any pretence of balance and objectivity on climate change coverage and instead crossed squarely into global warming advocacy. This book summarises some of the recent developments in the controversy over whether or not humans have created a climate catastrophe. Details on how teams of international scientists have dissented from the UN IPCC's view of climate science is included in this book as well.

Christopher Price - Britain, America and Rearmamen t in the 1930s, The Cost of Failure (2001).jpg

This book is the first to challenge current orthodoxy that Chamberlain's appeasement policy before World War Two was justified by Britain's inability to pay for rearmament. The book shows that British war potential was actually massive, with a solid foundation in the existing Imperial economy. Using previously unconsidered and recently declassified documents from British and American archives, the author demonstrates that the deliberate and political rejection of rearmament in the hope of eventual American support proved catastrophic for Britain.

John J. McCusker, Kenneth Morgan - The Early Moder n Atlantic Economy (2001).jpg

This book throws new light on the interlocking commercial relationships of the Atlantic trading world during the centuries ending with the American and French Revolutions. Grouped under four themes--the role of merchants and their connections; the development of trades; imperial economies; and colonial working societies--and written by an international team of economic historians, these essays increase our knowledge and understanding of the transatlantic economy. Contributions include studies of individual businessmen, labor patterns, port cities, branches of trade, and comparative studies of trading nations.

'The great virtue of this 'Atlantic system' approach is that it forces American historians, in particular, to sidestep the exceptionalism that bedevils their historiography and to confront the fact that slavery is a part of the history of the Atlantic and not just of what later became their own nation-state. It is also the focus on the Atlantic world that gives this collection of pieces covering an enormous geographical area a coherence that is unusual in conference proceedings.' Joseph F. Powell - The First Americans. Race, Evol ution and the Origin of Native Americans (2005).jpg

The recent discoveries of 9000-12000 year old skeletal remains in the Americas have begun to change our understanding of who originally entered the Americas at the end of the last Ice Age. Discoveries such as Washington state's 'Kennewick Man', Brazil's 'Luzia', and Alaska's 'Prince of Wales Island Man' have challenged the archaeological and geological status quo. The First Americans explores these new discoveries by using racial classifications and micro-evolutionary techniques to better understand the complex relationships between the first Americans and living Native Indian groups.

Joann Dreby - Divided by Borders, Mexican Migrants and Their Children (2010).jpg

Since 2000, approximately 440,000 Mexicans have migrated to the United States every year. Tens of thousands have left children behind in Mexico to do so. For these parents, migration is a sacrifice. What do parents expect to accomplish by dividing their families across borders? How do families manage when they are living apart? More importantly, do parents' relocations yield the intended results? Probing the experiences of migrant parents, children in Mexico, and their caregivers, Joanna Dreby offers an up-close and personal account of the lives of families divided by borders. What she finds is that the difficulties endured by transnational families make it nearly impossible for parents' sacrifices to result in the benefits they expect. Yet, paradoxically, these hardships reinforce family members' commitments to each other. A story both of adversity and the intensity of family ties, Divided byBorders is an engaging and insightful investigation of the ways Mexican families struggle and ultimately persevere in a global economy.

O USA - Tom Lansford - Old Europe, New Europe And The Us. Renego...iating Transatlantic Security In The Post 9-11 Era 2004.jpg

Iraq can be considered the 'perfect storm' which brought out the stark differences between the US and Europe. The disagreement over the role of the United Nations continues and the bitterness in the United States against its betrayal by allies like France is not diminishing. Meanwhile, the standing of the United States among the European public has plummeted. Within Europe, political tensions between what US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld euphemistically called the 'Old' Europe and the 'New' Europe continue to divide. To fully comprehend these rifts, this volume takes a specific look at the core security priorities of each European state and whether these interests are best served through closer security collaboration with the US or with emerging European structures such as the European Rapid Reaction Force. It analyzes the contribution each state would make to transatlantic security, the role they envisage for existing security structures such as NATO, and the role the US would play in transatlantic security.

David F. Musto - The American Disease, Origins of Narcotic Control (1999).jpg

The American Disease is a classic study of the development of drug laws in the U.S. Supporting the theory that Americans' attitudes toward drugs have followed a cyclic pattern of tolerance and restraint, author David Musto examines the relations between public outcry and the creation of prohibitive drug laws from the end of the Civil War to the present day. Originally published in 1973, with an expanded edition in 1987, this third edition contains a new chapter and preface that cover the renewed debate on policy and drug legislation from the end of the Reagan administration to the present Clinton administration.

Gene Boyt, David L. Burch - Bataan, A Survivor's Story (2004).jpg

Former Corps of Engineers officer Boyt (1917-2003) and the family friend who helped him transcribe his story offer a cogent account of surviving the Depression and four years as a Japanese POW. From a family impoverished by the father's desertion as well as the economy, Boyt got to college through the Civilian Conservation Corps, and from college into the army. Arriving in the Philippines five months before war broke out, Boyt was captured on Bataan and survived the Death March and several camps in the Philippines. Shipped to Japan, where survival was, if not easier, at least less impossible, he was liberated in 1945 to embark on a successful career as a civil engineer. His is a straightforward tale, featuring understated but vivid portraits of helpers and hinderers, clear consciousness of how little can stand between life and death, and a balanced attitude toward the many vices and occasional virtues of his captors. Likely to be one of the last Bataan survivor's narratives, this one definitely belongs in Pacific war collections.

Randall M. Miller - The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life in America (2008).jpg

The course of daily life in the United States has been a product of tradition, environment, and circumstance. How did the Civil War alter the lives of women, both white and black, left alone on southern farms? How did the Great Depression change the lives of working class families in eastern cities? How did the dicovery of gold in California transform the lives of native American, Hispanic, and white communities in western territories? Organized by time period as spelled out in the National Standards for U.S. History, these four volumes effectively analyze the diverse whole of American experience, examining the domestic, economic, intellectual, material, political, recreational, and religious life of the American people between 1763 and 2005.

Working under the editorial direction of general editor Randall M. Miller, professor of history at St. Joseph's University, a group of expert volume editors carefully integrate material drawn from volumes in Greenwood's highly successful Daily Life Through History series with new material researched and written by themselves and other scholars. The four volumes cover the following periods:The War of Independence and Antebellum Expansion and Reform, 1763-1861, The Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Industrialization of America, 1861-1900, The Emergence of Modern America, World War I, and the Great Depression, 1900-1940 and Wartime, Postwar, and Contemporary America, 1940-Present. Each volume includes a selection of primary documents, a timeline of important events during the period, images illustrating the text, and extensive bibliography of further information resources—both print and electronic—and a detailed subject index.
