Is Leo Strauss truly an intellectual forebear of neoconservatism and a powerful force in shaping Bush administration foreign policy? The Truth about Leo Strauss puts this question to rest, revealing for the first time how the popular media came to perpetuate an oversimplified view of a complex and wide-ranging philosopher. In doing so, it corrects our perception of Strauss, providing the best general introduction available to the political thought of this misunderstood figure.
Catherine and Michael Zuckert—both former students of Strauss—guide readers here to a nuanced understanding of how Strauss’s political thought fits into his broader philosophy. Challenging the ideas that Strauss was an inflexible conservative who followed in the footsteps of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt, the Zuckerts contend that Strauss’s signature idea was the need for a return to the ancients. Through their work, they conclude that Strauss was a sober defender of liberal democracy, aware of both its strengths and its weaknesses.
Balanced and accessible, The Truth about Leo Strauss is a must-read for anyone who wants to more fully comprehend this enigmatic philosopher and his much-disputed legacy.
“The Truth about Leo Strauss is the most balanced and insightful book yet written about Strauss’s thought, students, and political influence. It dispels myths promulgated by both friends and foes and persuasively traces the conflicting paths that American thinkers indebted to Strauss have taken.”—William Galston, Brookings Institution

Great American Combat Aircraft - Frederic Lert - G rumman F-14 Tomcat in combat (2008).jpg

The roots of the F-14 tomcat, one of the most respected fighter of the last few decades, can be found in the tradition of inter-service rivalry that exists between the U.S Air Force and U.S. Navy. Until the early 1960s, the vastly different technical and mission requirements of these two branches of the military had dictated the purchase of very dissimilar aircraft typed. The first F-14 was in the air within two years - the beginning of a spectacular success story known as the Tomcat...

Stephen Bourne - Butterfly McQueen Remembered (200 7).jpg

From her memorable role in Gone With the Wind to her last big screen appearance opposite Harrison Ford in The Mosquito Coast, the details of McQueen's life are captured in this book.
Butterfly McQueen's biographer Stephen Bourne may not "know nuthin' `bout birthin' babies" but delivers a damned good biography on the neglected Afro-American actor who is finally receiving the critical attention for her unique contribution to American cinema.
Solidly written with meticulously researched information, rare stills and personal correspondences, Bourne maps Thelma, alias "Butterfly" McQueen's life from her humble beginnings in the pre-Civil Rights South, to a brief Hollywood career in the 1940s, historical neglect, and her tragic death in 1995.
Bourne pulls all into perspective and reveals a talented but unfulfilled actor who was frustrated and denied by larger systems and institutions, an altruistic survivor who later became anti-poverty activist.
McQueen admits that in her early years she knew little about slavery or Black militancy. Like many other Black actors of the period, she was compliant with the Hollywood system, not militant, or always critically conscious of Hollywood's filmmaking practices. Thus, like many other Black actors, she became complicit and "trapped" within the white hegemonic constructs of Hollywood filmmaking. She could not see, of course, the long-term ideological effects her performances would have on future actors and Black female representation.
Bourne openly discusses Hollywood racism and white privilege that limited McQueen's Hollywood chances and those of contemporaries Theresa Harris and Jeni Le Gon.
Bourne discusses in substantial length Gone with the Wind's troubled production history, the behind-the-scenes of Black resistance, and the critical reception of "Prissy", McQueen's controversial character. Bourne uses this chapter to make poignant statements about Black - Jewish race relations in America.
All Black actors working in Hollywood should read Bourne's biographies on McQueen and Ethel Waters (2007). Film historians and anti-racist educators should place these works as staples on Black History booklists.
It is a solidly crafted work on an enigmatic Black woman.

Peter Van Der Veer - Media, War and Terrorism, Res ponses from the Middle East and Asia (2004).jpg

Media, War and Terrorism analyses, for the first time, responses to the events of 9/11 and it's repercussions from the point of view of Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Perhaps controversially, the contributors argue that while the US, and to an extent European, media seems largely unified in their coverage and silence in public debate of the events surrounding the attacks on the World Trade Centre, there exists open, critical debate in other parts of the world. By examining the use of media as an instrument of warfare and analyzing the construction of public opinion in mediated electronic warfare, this book clearly shows the difference in perspectives between public opinion in the US and the rest of the world. Moving away from popular assumptions that societies in the West are democratic and progressive and those in the Middle East and Asia are either authoritarian or under-developed, this examination of the media in those countries suggests the exact opposite. In combining an examination of the general, theoretical issues concerning the use of the media as an instrument of warfare with rich, geographically diverse case studies, the editors are able to provide a diverse and intriguing analysis of the impact and inter-connectedness of national and global medias. Bringing together contributions from academics, journalists and media practioners from all over the world, Media, War and Terrorism is an essential read for all of those seeking an informed, non-Western perspective on the events following 9/11.

Martin T. Bannister - Department of the Treasury B lueprint for Actions (2009).jpg

The mission of the Department of the Treasury ('Treasury') focuses on promoting economic growth and stability in the United States. Critical to this mission is a sound and competitive financial services industry grounded in robust consumer protection and stable and innovative markets. Financial institutions play an essential role in the U.S. economy by providing a means for consumers and businesses to save for the future, to protect and hedge against risks, and to access funding for consumption or organise capital for new investment opportunities. A number of different types of financial institutions provide financial services in the United States: commercial banks and other insured depository institutions, insurers, companies engaged in securities and futures transactions, finance companies, and specialised companies established by the government. Together, these institutions and the markets in which they act underpin economic activity through the intermediation of funds between providers and users of capital. This is an edited and excerpted edition. This intermediation function is accomplished in a number of ways. For example, insured depository institutions provide a vehicle to allocate the savings of individuals. Similarly, securities companies facilitate the transfer of capital among all types of investors and investment opportunities. Insurers assist in the financial intermediation process by providing a means for individuals, companies, and other financial institutions to protect assets from various types of losses. Overall, financial institutions serve a vitally important function in the U.S. economy by allowing capital to seek out its most productive uses in an efficient matter. Given the economic significance of the U.S. financial services sector, "Treasury" considers the structure of its regulation worthy of examination and re-examination.

Michael Gelb - An American Engineer in Stalin's Ru ssia, The Memoirs of Zara Witkin (1991).jpg

In 1932 Zara Witkin, a prominent American engineer, set off for the Soviet Union with two goals: to help build a society more just and rational than the bankrupt capitalist system at home, and to seek out the beautiful film star Emma Tsesarskaia. His memoirs offer a detailed view of Stalin's bureaucracyentrenched planners who snubbed new methods; construction bosses whose cover-ups led to terrible disasters; engineers who plagiarized Witkin's work; workers whose pride was defeated. Punctuating this document is the tale of Witkin's passion for Tsesarskaia and the record of his friendships with journalist Eugene Lyons, planner Ernst May, and others. Witkin felt beaten in the end by the lethargy and corruption choking the greatest social experiment in history, and by a pervasive evilthe suppression of human rights and dignity by a relentless dictatorship. Finally breaking his spirit was the dissolution of his romance with Emma, his "Dark Goddess." In his lively introduction, Michael Gelb provides the historical context of Witkin's experience, details of his personal life, and insights offered by Emma Tsesarskaia in an interview in 1989.

- Interdisciplinary and comparative; several of the contributors are anthropologists
- Includes chapters on slavery and black culture in the US and Brazil: the two countries with the largest populations of African descent in the Americas

Alfred Arteaga - Chicano Poetics, Heterotexts and Hybridities (1997).jpg

Chicano Poetics: Heterotexts and Hybridities examines the crossing of literary and social forces that forms the context for being Chicano. Heterotextual poetics reveals how a poetry of the cross can influence identity, in readings ranging from the poetry of gender and race by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to that of the fragmentary, postmodern subject of Juan Felipe Herrara. Heterotextuality is the medium in which xicanismo is articulated and comes to be a hybrid subject of textual difference.

- Places Chicano studies within larger studies of postcolonialism, European literature, nationalism, contemporary literary theory, postmodernism
- Explores how the literary shapes the social
- Its consideration of hybrid texts is exemplified in the poetry by the author
