Eichengreen (Univ. of California-Berkeley), the author of Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1918-1939 (Oxford Univ., 1992), uses a detailed history of exchange rate systems to support his theory that the democratization of political processes has presented competing goals to policymakers, making it more difficult for them to commit to fixed rates of exchange. His explanation for the movement toward floating exchange rates is controversial but well argued. The information he cites is current, and he incorporates a discussion of the European Monetary System and its future. Eichengreen's presentation of history is solid, with ample references. General readers will benefit from the glossary of his technical terms. His book will be the most useful to economists, historians, political scientists, and finance professionals.

Concord 7506 - Walter Bohm - M2A2 M3A2 Bradley, Ba ckbone of the US Mechanized Infantry (2003).jpg

The M2/M3 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle was developed to replace the M113. With increased firepower compared to its predecessor, the Bradley is also superior in mobility and armor protection. It has a two-man stabilized turret as a platform for a 25mm Bushmaster chin gun, a M240 co-axial MG, and a two-tube TOW launcher with a seven-man dismount team.

The M2A2/M3A2 Bradley went into service with the 3d INF and 1st INF in 1989/90. It played a major role in the ground war for the liberation of Kuwait during Operation "Desert Storm" in 1991. During the Gulf War, the Bradley fleet proved to be very reliable. Only 3 vehicles were destroyed by enemy fire, with 17 vehicles by friendly fire. As a result of "Desert Storm", an improvement program for the Bradley begun. These modified vehicles received the code M2A2 ODS/M3A2 ODS.

The authors Walter Bohm and Peter Siebert are regular contributors to Concord's range of modern armor books. Most photos were taken in Germany, where the Bradleys roam through the countryside as will. There are also photos of Bradleys serving in Kosovo. A section is devoted to Bradley variants and special markings.

Concord 7516 - Gordon Arthur - Marines on the Grou nd, Operation Iraqi Freedom 1 (2006).jpg

Much has been written about the Coalition invasion of Iraq in 2003, but there has been much less written about the United States Marine Corps' role specifically. Indeed, there are very few volumes that provide a concise yet full summary of the complete operation carried out by the Marines. This book provides a valuable survey of what the Marines of mostly I MEF achieved in this historic liberation of Iraq. This book focuses primarily on the vehicles and weapons used by Marine ground forces.

In a day-by-day account, the carefully researched volume describes the main and relevant events from pre-invasion, right through to the presidential declaration of the end of hostilities. The battles, the strategies, are all delineated in informative fashion in the text. This is backed up by the wide range of photos, many obtained from Marine combat photographers who were covering the invasion. This ensures that there is a wide range of settings, units and vehicles covered. Readers will find inspirational pictures of M1 tanks, AAVs, LAVs, artillery, and a full range of trucks and Humvees. This includes such things as destroyed or abandoned USMC and Iraqi equipment. These vehicles will provide modelers with tons of ideas in terms of combat loads, markings and weathering.

Besides two 1/35 scale plans, the book also contains four color plates featuring some of the key vehicles that were used by the Marines. Photo captions are full and descriptive, giving exact details of locations, units and dates, as well as useful background information. In terms of providing an easy to read survey of the Marines in OIF 1, plus an action-packed photographic record of this important campaign, this book is unsurpassed.

Concord 7517 - Gordon Arthur - Marines on the Grou nd, Operation Iraqi Freedom 2 (2007).jpg

The USA has been embroiled in the ongoing insurgency in Iraq since Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off on 23 March 2003. "Marines on the Ground: Operation Iraqi Freedom 1" covered the important role played by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in the initial invasion. The second volume in this two-part series has now been released, and it carries on the story of I MEF's return to Iraq in March 2004 through to the end of March 2005 when responsibility was handed over to II MEF.

As in the earlier volume, this book utilizes official photos taken by USMC photographers. This ensures a wide variety of photos covering different locations, units and vehicles are included. Operation Al Fajr, the violent Battle of Fallujah, is extremely well covered in a detailed chapter that offers a day-by-day action of the fighting. Understanding of this operation is boosted by a personal battle account from Andreas Elesky , MSgt USMC (Ret.), who participated in the fighting before being wounded in action. Other chapters cover such events as the Najaf Crisis and Iraq's first free national elections. Vehicles much in evidence in this photographic record include Humvees, MTVRs, LAVs, AAVs, and M1A1 Abrams tanks.

The book contains four color plates by Hubert Cance, two profile line drawings, along with one 1/35 scale plans. This is a concise record of major actions that U.S. Marines were involved in during this period, and readers wanting to learn more about the Battle of Falljah, or simply looking for a collection of Marine photos, will find much of interest here.

01 - USA1 - Reitumetse Mabokela, Anna L. Green - Sisters of the Ac...Emergent Black Women Scholars in Higher Education 2001.jpg

There are disturbing trends in the continued under-representation of African American women in higher education, especially their attainment of post-baccalaureate and graduate degrees. This is an issue of major concern nationally, for the Black community, and for leaders in higher education.
The fifteen scholars who contribute to this volume trace the trajectory of Black women in education, with a particular focus on higher education. These scholars combine research and personal narratives to explore educational issues ranging from historical accounts of Black female teachers in the nineteenth century, to the challenges and triumphs of being an activist researcher at the turn of the twenty-first century. The essays in this volume address specific historical, social, cultural, political, and academic issues that affect Black women in the academy, and provide readers with tangible examples of how these scholars have transcended some of the challenges in their pursuit of academic excellence.
While these essays do not claim to provide the "magic solution" or a "how-to-guide" to success in higher education, they do raise thought-provoking issues that are critical to the success of Black women in higher education.
This book uncovers issues, and proposes remedies, which will be of vital interest for anyone concerned with diversity and equity in higher education. It celebrates emergent scholars of African descent, who have used the challenges they have encountered in their journeys through the academy to create opportunities for success.

Lee Jones - Making It on Broken Promises (2002).jpg

Sixteen of America's leading scholars offer an uncompromising critique of the academy from their perspective as African American men.
They challenge dominant majority assumptions about the culture of higher education, most particularly its claims of openness to diversity and divergent traditions.
What is remarkable about the chapters that make up this book - despite the authors' different paths to success, their disparate fields of study, and their distinct voices - is their almost unanimous message that higher education is inimical to African Americans.
They take issue with the processes that determine what is legitimized as scholarship, as well as with who wields the power to authenticate it. They describe the debilitating pressures to subordinate Black identity to a supposedly universal but hegemonic Eurocentric culture. They question the academy's valuing of individuality and its privileging of dichotomy over their cultural styles of community, humanism and synthesis. They also range over such issues as culturally mediated styles of cognition, the misuse of standardized testing, the disproportionate burden of service placed on African American faculty and a reward system that discounts it.
Given stature of these authors, and their outspoken message, this book demands attention from leaders and faculty in predominantly White institutions, as well as from Black scholars and graduates aspiring to a career in higher education.

01 - USA1 - William E. Kirwan, Jr., Frank W. Hale - What Makes Rac...aders Present Successful Policies and Strategies 2003.jpg

* A unique reference describing successful diversity initiatives in higher education
Higher education, like the nation, is facing major demographic changes. Our colleges and universities recognize they not only have to be more inclusive, but that they have to provide an environment that will effectively retain and develop the growing population of ethnically and racially diverse students. How ready are they and what should they be doing?
Frank W. Hale, Jr. -- known as the "Dean of Diversity" for his pioneering efforts in establishing Ohio State as one of the institutions graduating the most Black Ph.D.s -- has gathered twenty-two leading scholars and administrators from around the country who describe the successful diversity programs they have developed.
Recognizing the importance of diversity as a means of embracing the experiences, perspectives and expertise of other cultures, this book shares what has been most effective in helping institutions to create an atmosphere and a campus culture that not only admits students, faculty and staff of color but accepts and welcomes their presence and participation.
This is a landmark reference for every institution concerned with inclusivity and diversity. The successes it presents offers academic leaders much they can learn from, and ideas and procedures they can adapt, as they discuss and develop their own campus policies and initiatives.

Henry F. Graff - The (American) Presidents, A Refe rence History (2002).jpg

In The Presidents: A Reference History United States presidents from George Washington to William Jefferson Clinton are profiled in depth. A quick browse through John A. Garraty's piece on Grover Cleveland reveals that not only was Cleveland the 22nd and the 24th president of the United States, but also that he had a popular plurality of 100,000 votes in the election he lost to Benjamin Harrison. In 1881, three years before he became president, Cleveland was but a Buffalo lawyer, stating "No amount of money would tempt me to add to or increase my present work." One further learns that he ran with a coarse crowd, hired a substitute to fight for him in the Civil War, and was the father of an illegitimate child. When you tire of present-day scandals, it's educational to learn about the skeletons that past presidents kept in their closets. Excellently indexed, Henry Graff's work makes for a reliable presidential reference as well as an absorbing and enlightening read. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sergio Fabbrini - Democracy and Federalism in the European Union and the United States, Exploring Po st-National Governance (2004).jpg

01 - USA1 - Sergio Fabbrini - Democracy and Federalism in the Euro...United States, Exploring Post-National Governance 2004.jpg

The European Union - a supranational system with its own institutional characteristics and autonomy - has a structure and functional logic which are more similar to those of the US than those of European nation states. Yet, by and large, the EU and the US tend to be analyzed more as potential geopolitical and economic rivals or allies than compared as institutional peers. By bringing together some of the most influential political scientists and historians to compare the European and American experiences of federalism, this book explores the future development, and seeks a better understanding, of a post-national European Union democracy. The book consists of three parts.
* How the EU has developed and the implications of the process of European federalization
* The features of American federalism, tracing the intellectual debate that led to the approval of the American federal constitution in 1787
* The future of European Union.
Robert A. Dahl concludes the volume, exploring the difficulties of democracy on an international scale. He looks at the prospects for deliberately created democratic institutions and the problems of size, legitimacy and identity. This unique volume will be of interest to students and scholars studying European politics, American politics, federalism and comparative politics.

Leon Claire Metz - The Encyclopedia of Lawmen, Out laws, and Gunfighters (2002).jpg

Standoffs, saloons and sunsets spring to mind when one envisions the rough and tumble of the early days of the American frontier. Indeed, the golden period of the American West produced some of the most notorious badmen and bravest lawmen in American history, many of whom have become legends. Some rogues are familiar: John Wesley Hardin (who, it is said, killed more than 40 men), William Bonney (Billy the Kid), Wild Bill Hickok, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Others are not so well known but were no less dangerous: John Slaughter, Buckskin Frank Leslie, Wild Bill Longely, Liver-Eating Johnson, and Bill Doolin. Then there are the peacekeepers, the brave men who helped tame the Wild West: the Earp Brothers, Pat Garrett, and Texas Rangers such as James Gillett and Dallas Stoudenmire. This encyclopaedia features more than 400 entries, providing comprehensive biographies of men and women, from both sides of the law, who made their mark on the American frontier. Topics covered also include legendary incidents like the shootout at the OK Corral and the Johnson County War, as well as subjects that marked the era such as dime novels, faro, and quick-draw artists. This collection seeks to separate fact from fiction, offering reference material for fans of the Old West.

Legends of the Wild West - Adam Woog - Jesse James (2010).jpg

Jesse James may be the most famous outlaw from the wild days of the Old West. He began his career during the Civil War, as part of a group of Southern-supporting guerrilla fighters in his native Missouri. After the war, James turned his hand to crime, becoming one of the leaders of the famous James-Younger Gang, along with his brother, Frank, and another set of brothers, the Youngers. These bandits became notorious for their bold robberies of banks, stagecoaches, and railroads around Missouri, but James was never taken prisoner, despite years of manhunts for him. James's legendary career ended when he was betrayed and murdered by Robert Ford, a member of his gang. As proved in Jesse James, his daring exploits are still fascinating more than a century after his death.

Legends of the Wild West - Adam Woog - Wyatt Earp (2010).jpg

Wyatt Earp remains one of the Old West's most iconic figures—perhaps the most famous lawman who ever lived. He has become the ultimate symbol of the stern, righteous, brave, and principled deputy. Over the years, countless books, articles, movies, television shows, and Web sites have burnished this image. Yet, Earp was only a lawman for a total of about six of his 80 years. Among the many other occupations he tried in his long life were gambling, saloon-keeping, mining, racehorse ownership, and real estate speculation. Nor was he always on the right side of the law; there is strong evidence to show that Earp was sometimes involved in slightly less-than-legal activities. Nonetheless, it is as a lawman that Earp is remembered. Discover the man behind the deputy star who was made into a legend after one 30-second gun battle—the famous shootout at the O.K. Corral.

Legends of the Wild West - Barbara Lee Bloom - Nat Love (2010).jpg

Born in a log cabin in Tennessee in June 1854, Nat Love was the slave of Robert Love. He was about six when the Civil War began, and after the slaves were freed following the war, Love was ready to start living a new life out West, where he could find work as a cowhand. It wasn't long before he started showing his talents as a cowboy, roping and herding cattle and learning to shoot a Colt .45. He used his skill in roping contests at rodeos, where he earned the nickname "Deadwood Dick" and was proclaimed "Champion Roper of the Western Cattle Country." Eventually Love walked away from the life of a cowboy and worked as a Pullman porter, becoming one of the most popular. Though some may be more fiction than fact, the vivid accounts in his autobiography tell tales of adventures with such characters as Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill, Kit Carson, and the James Brothers. In this new offering, readers can discover the truth and tall tales Nat Love spun in his self-penned work.

Legends of the Wild West - Judy L. Hasday - Davy Crockett (2010).jpg

A hunter, woodsman, and frontiersman who was an excellent shot with a rifle, Davy Crockett became a well-known legend after his death at the siege of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Although he is remembered as an American pioneer, he also forged a career as a politician, serving as a Tennessee state legislator and later as a U.S. Congressman. Crockett had a remarkable life, from running away from home when he was 13 to holding political office with virtually no formal education. The desire for more land led Crockett to journey to Texas, where he joined the volunteer army to offer allegiance to the formation of a free Texas. At the Battle of the Alamo, Mexican general Santa Anna wanted to make an example of those involved in the rebellion; his "take no prisoners" order resulted in Crockett's execution. InDavy Crockett, read about a man whose life became a symbol of America's pioneering spirit.

Born Phoebe Ann Mosey on August 13, 1860, on the rural western border of Ohio, Annie Oakley began hunting at age 9 to support her siblings and widowed mother. She became so skilled at selling the hunted game that she was able to pay off the mortgage to her mother's farm when she was 15. In fact, she even traveled to Europe and performed for Queen Victoria and other crowned heads of state. At the request of the Prince of Prussia, she shot the ashes off a cigarette. Adventurous and brave, Oakley offered her services and 50 "lady sharpshooters" to President William McKinley during the Spanish-American War, but her offer was not accepted. She continued to show courage, suing and winning a libel case against newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst after he published a false story about her.
