This book addresses key issues in the historical struggle for civil rights, political rights, and social rights in the United States and Germany from the late nineteenth century to the present. The essays address issues such as the struggle for the rights of women and minorities (including African Americans, Jews, and Asians), National Socialism and the dismantling of civil rights, and the emergence of the concept of social rights. What becomes clear are the unique features that distinguish German from American history and that these differences have been created by both social movements and dissimilar cultures of rights.

Eleanor Roosevelt - The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, The Human Rights Years, 1945-1948 (2006).jpg

Eleanor Roosevelt walked out of the White House more than the president's widow. As a nationally syndicated columnist, popular lecturer, author, party leader, and social activist, Roosevelt assured her friends that 'my voice will not be silent'. Vowing not to be a 'workless worker in a world of work', Roosevelt dedicated her unstinting energy to 'winning the peace'. The 410 documents in "The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, Volume 1: The Human Rights Years, 1945-1948", collected from 263 archives in 50 states and 9 nations, chronicle not only Roosevelt's impact on American politics and the United Nations, but also the serious treatment she received from those in power. They disclose the inner workings of Truman's first administration, the United Nations, and the major social and political movements of the postwar world. They also reveal the intense struggles Roosevelt's correspondents and advisors had confronting a war-scarred world, the conflicting advice they gave her, and the material Roosevelt reviewed and the people she consulted while determining her own course of action. Using a wide variety of material - letters, speeches, columns, debates, committee transcripts, telegrams, and diary entries - this first of five volumes presents a representative selection of the actions Eleanor Roosevelt took to define, implement, and promote human rights and the impact her work had at home and abroad. Readers may disagree over various decisions she made, language that she used, or the priorities she established. Yet her influence is unquestioned.

01 - USA1 - Louise M Benjamin - Freedom of the Air and the Public ...t, First Amendment Rights in Broadcasting to 1935 2001.jpg

A unique and definitive study of freedom of expression rights in electronic media from the 1920s through the mid-1930s, Louise M. Benjamin's Freedom of the Air and the Public Interest: First Amendment Rights in Broadcasting to 1935 examines the evolution of free speech rights in early radio.
Drawing on primary resources from sixteen archives plus contemporary secondary sources, Benjamin analyzes interactions among the players involved and argues that First Amendment rights in radio evolved in the 1920s and 1930s through the interaction of many entities having social, political, or economic interests in radio. She shows how free speech and First Amendment rights were defined and perceived up to 1935.
Focusing on the evolution of various electronic media rights, Benjamin looks at censorship, speakers' rights of access to the medium, broadcasters' rights to use radio as they desired, and listeners' rights to receive information via the airwaves. With many interested parties involved, conflict was inevitable, resulting in the establishment of industry policies and government legislation-particularly the Radio Act of 1927. Further debate led to the Communications Act of 1934, which has provided the regulatory framework for broadcasting for over sixty years. Controversies caused by new technology today continue to rage over virtually the same rights and issues that Benjamin deals with

Henry George - Progress and Poverty edited and abr idged for modern readers (2006).jpg

Why There Are Recessions And Poverty Amid Plenty- And What To Do About It! One of the world's best-selling books on political economy edited and abridged for modern readers. Many economists and politicians foster the illusion that great fortunes and poverty stem from the presence or absence of individual skill and risk-taking. Henry George, by contrast, showed that the wealth gap occurs because a few people are allowed to monopolize natural opportunities and deny them to others. George did not advocate equality of income, the forcible redistribution of wealth, or government management of the economy. He simply believed that in a society not burdened by the demands of a privileged elite, a full and satisfying life would be attainable by everyone.

Johanna Niemi, Iain Ramsay, William C. Whitford - Consumer Credit, Debt and Bankruptcy, Comparative and International Perspectives (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Johanna Niemi, Iain Ramsay, William C. Whitford - Cons...uptcy, Comparative and International Perspectives 2009.jpg

After a long period of prosperity and steady economic growth, the world's leading economies are now in crisis, and although there will be debate about its origins, the scale and seriousness of the crisis is in no doubt. There is also no doubt that excessive amounts of consumer credit, allied to a weak understanding of how globalised credit markets might react to a crisis, have played a significant part. This book, which is primarily about credit, debt and the trouble they have led to, is written by authors who have specialised in researching into over-indebtedness, that is, situations in which an individual's debt burden has become overwhelming. For these authors the plight of individuals is a primary concern, but the wider issue is how credit is used and how it changes societies. The essays in this volume, addressing topics which are fundamental to our understanding of the current crisis, range widely across the whole sector of consumer finance, including mortgages, 'credit-binges', the regulation of consumer lending, insolvency, repayment plans, debt counselling and much more besides. The conclusions drawn from the book are equally wide-ranging, but above all the lesson learned from these essays is that the financialisation of contemporary life ensures that issues of the appropriate role of credit remain of critical importance in society.

01 - USA1 - Kenneth D. Ward, Cecilia R. Castillo - The Judiciary i...ifficulty, And Contemporary Constitutional Theory 2005.jpg

The Judiciary in American Democracy succeeds at providing a wonderful set of readings that bring Bickel's work to life and that note his importance to scholarship on judicial review, constitutional interpretation, and, more broadly, the notion of separation of powers in a constitutional system. It shreds the rather simplistic notions that some people have of judicial restraint and judicial activism. This is a significant work on a true giant in the field of constitutional studies, law, and courts.

01 - USA1 - Samuel Eliot Morison - The Two Ocean War, A Short Hist...f the United States Navy in the Second World War 1963.jpg

I first got this book and read it in eighth grade. I read it once a year ever since! This is, without a doubt, the quintessential book on the US Navy in World War II. (That is, excluding his 15 volume set) Well written, it shows not only the big picture, but the smaller battles and skirmishes. Morison goes over the buildup to it, speaking of the "Twenty Years' Peace", sheds light on the oft-overlooked ABDA command, talks about the attack on Pearl Harbor in-depth, gives amazingly accurate details on the Battle for the Atlantic, and speaks of the battles that have become synonymous with the Pacific, as well as some that may be new to even the most accomplished World War II/Navy buff. A great read, and it's a great way to understand how important the US Navy was in WWII.

Wheeler Winston Dixon - Film and Television After 9-11 (2004).jpg

In Film and Television After 9/11, editor Wheeler Winston Dixon and eleven other distinguished film scholars discuss the production, reception, and distribution of Hollywood and foreign films after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and examine how moviemaking has changed to reflect the new world climate.
While some contemporary films offer escapism, much of mainstream American cinema since 9/11 is centered on the desire for a “just war” in which military reprisals and escalation of warfare appear to be both inevitable and justified. Films of 2002 such as Black Hawk Down, Collateral Damage, and We Were Soldiers demonstrate a renewed audience appetite for narratives of conflict, reminiscent of the wave of filmmaking that surrounded American involvement in World War II.
The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon galvanized the American public initially, yet film critics wonder how this will play out over time. Film and Television After 9/11 is the first book to provide original insights into topics ranging from the international reception of post-9/11 American cinema, re-viewing films of our shared cinematic past in light of the attacks, and exploring parallels between post-9/11 cinema and World War II-era productions.

"One of the most comprehensive and intelligent postmodern critics of art and literature, Huyssen collects here a series of his essays on pomo... " -- Village Voice Literary Supplement
"... his work remains alert to the problematic relationship obtaining between marxisms and poststructuralisms." -- American Literary History
"... challenging and astute." -- World Literature Today
"Huyssen's level-headed account of this controversial constellation of critical voices brings welcome clarification to today's murky haze of cultural discussion and proves definitively that commentary from the tradition of the German Left has an indispensable role to play in contemporary criticism." -- The German Quarterly
"... we will certainly have, after reading this book, a deeper understanding of the forces that have led up to the present and of the possibilities still open to us." -- Critical Texts
"... a rich, multifaceted study." -- The Year's Work in English Studies
Huyssen argues that postmodernism cannot be regarded as a radical break with the past, as it is deeply indebted to that other trend within the culture of modernity -- the historical avant-garde.

Philip D. Beidler - Late Thoughts on an Old War, T he Legacy of Vietnam (2004).jpg

Philip D. Beidler, who served as an armored cavalry platoon leader in Vietnam, sees less and less of the hard-won perspective of the common soldier in what America has made of that war. Each passing year, he says, dulls our sense of immediacy about Vietnam’s costs, opening wider the emptation to make it something more necessary, neatly contained, and justifiable than it should ever become. Here Beidler draws on deeply personal memories to reflect on the war’s lingering aftereffects and the shallow, evasive ways we deal with them.
Beidler brings back the war he knew in chapters on its vocabulary, music, literature, and film. His catalog of soldier slang reveals how finely a tour of Vietnam could hone one’s sense of absurdity. His survey of the war’s pop hits looks for meaning in the soundtrack many veterans still hear in their heads. Beidler also explains how "Viet Pulp" literature about snipers, tunnel rats, and other hard-core types has pushed aside masterpieces like Duong Thu Huong’s Novel without a Name. Likewise we learn why the movie The Deer Hunter doesn’t "get it" about Vietnam but why Platoon and We Were Soldiers sometimes nearly do.
As Beidler takes measure of his own wartime politics and morals, he ponders the divergent careers of such figures as William Calley, the army lieutenant whose name is synonymous with the civilian massacre at My Lai, and an old friend, poet John Balaban, a conscientious objector who performed alternative duty in Vietnam as a schoolteacher and hospital worker. Beidler also looks at Vietnam alongside other conflicts—-including the war on international terrorism. He once hoped, he says, that Vietnam had fractured our sense of providential destiny and geopolitical invincibility but now realizes, with dismay, that those myths are still with us. "Americans have always wanted their apocalypses," writes Beidler, "and they have always wanted them now."

Charles P. Pierce - Idiot America, How Stupidity B ecame a Virtue in the Land of the Free (2010).jpg

The Culture Wars Are Over and the Idiots Have Won.

A veteran journalist's acidically funny, righteously angry lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States.
In the midst of a career-long quest to separate the smart from the pap, Charles Pierce had a defining moment at the Creation Museum in Kentucky, where he observed a dinosaur. Wearing a saddle... But worse than this was when the proprietor exclaimed to a cheering crowd, “We are taking the dinosaurs back from the evolutionists!” He knew then and there it was time to try and salvage the Land of the Enlightened, buried somewhere in this new Home of the Uninformed.
With his razor-sharp wit and erudite reasoning, Pierce delivers a gut-wrenching, side-splitting lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States, and how a country founded on intellectual curiosity has somehow deteriorated into a nation of simpletons more apt to vote for an American Idol contestant than a presidential candidate.
With Idiot America, Pierce's thunderous denunciation is also a secret call to action, as he hopes that somehow, being intelligent will stop being a stigma, and that pinheads will once again be pitied, not celebrated.
