Generally regarded as the most important of the Civil War campaigns conducted in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, that of 1864 lasted more than four months and claimed more than 25,000 casualties. The armies of Philip H. Sheridan and Jubal A. Early contended for immense stakes. Beyond the agricultural bounty and the boost in morale a victory would bring, events in the Valley also would affect Abraham Lincoln's chances for reelection in the November 1864 presidential canvass. The eleven original essays in this volume reexamine common assumptions about the campaign, its major figures, and its significance. Taking advantage of the most recent scholarship and a wide range of primary sources, contributors examine strategy and tactics, the performances of key commanders on each side, the campaign's political repercussions, and the experiences of civilians caught in the path of the armies. The authors do not always agree with one another, yet, taken together, their essays highlight important connections between the home front and the battlefield, as well as ways in which military affairs, civilian experiences, and politics played off one another during the campaign.

Historical Warriors 5 - Antonio Mayoralas - The U. S. Cavalry, 1865-1890, Patrolling the Frontier (20 06).jpg

The US Cavalry is a theme that reminds the reader of some of the most heroic actions in the military history of all times and at all the corners of the globe. This body, surrounded by the myths that made the US Cavalry known worldwide has seen how its image was either glorified with great campaigns idealized mainly by Hollywood, which were really nothing of the sort, or depicted too negatively with cruel actions, sometimes over exaggerated by subjective accounts.

This book, pertaining the Historical Warriors collection, provides a brief introduction through various chapters, to what was the US Cavalry between 1865 and 1890, handling themes such as the myth and reality of this military body, its composition after the Succession War, the migration of the colonists and the role of the cavalry in the so called 'Indian problem'.

From a strictly human viewpoint, the book also reveals the cavalry's social characteristics, in chapters dedicated to soldiers and officers' lifestyle and the cavalry's origins within the state of the American society of the epoch, as well as interesting introduction on discipline and life in the fort and on campaign. As far as the cavalry as a body is concerned, the book takes a look at the formation of the different regiments, combat strategies used during the Indian wars and in the great campaigns, equipment and armor, horses and their care and the different uniforms from the Civil War up to the last modifications, not forgetting to mention civilian clothing.

The final chapters detail the main actions and portray the key players in this epic adventure.

All the chapters are illustrated with photographs from the epoch, color illustrations, maps and diagrams, providing the reader with greater enjoyment of this essential work for those fascinated by military history.

USA Books1 - Christopher D. Cotts - The Revenge of Europe, NATO an...ic Relationship in the Era of the European Union 2005.jpg

Europe stands on the eve of a very important era: its unification after centuries of division and internal conflict. Perhaps it is more correct to say that Europe has just begun the final phase in this process. The transformation from a Europe of fragmented states to a united Europe has been a long process, with several significant milestones along the way, as Colonel Cotts addresses early in his text. While Europe was going through its various skirmishes and treaties, across the Atlantic Ocean, another war led to the formation of the United States of America. Apparently the process of unification is somewhat similar to a difficult delivery.

David W. Blight - Race and Reunion, The Civil War in American Memory (2001).jpg

No historical event has left as deep an imprint on America’s collective memory as the Civil War. In the war’s aftermath, Americans had to embrace and cast off a traumatic past. David Blight explores the perilous path of remembering and forgetting, and reveals its tragic costs to race relations and America’s national reunion. In 1865, confronted with a ravaged landscape and a torn America, the North and South began a slow and painful process of reconciliation. The ensuing decades witnessed the triumph of a culture of reunion, which downplayed sectional division and emphasized the heroics of a battle between noble men of the Blue and the Gray. Nearly lost in national culture were the moral crusades over slavery that ignited the war, the presence and participation of African Americans throughout the war, and the promise of emancipation that emerged from the war. Race and Reunion is a history of how the unity of white America was purchased through the increasing segregation of black and white memory of the Civil War. Blight delves deeply into the shifting meanings of death and sacrifice, Reconstruction, the romanticized South of literature, soldiers’ reminiscences of battle, the idea of the Lost Cause, and the ritual of Memorial Day. He resurrects the variety of African-American voices and memories of the war and the efforts to preserve the emancipationist legacy in the midst of a culture built on its denial. Blight’s sweeping narrative of triumph and tragedy, romance and realism, is a compelling tale of the politics of memory, of how a nation healed from civil war without justice. By the early twentieth century, the problems of race and reunion were locked in mutual dependence, a painful legacy that continues to haunt us today.

Earl H.Tilford - Crosswinds, The Air Force's Setup in Vietnam (2003).jpg

In this provocative reevaluation of U.S. Air Force strategy in Vietnam, Tilford exposes the generals' tunnel-vision in regard to the vaunted but dubious doctrine of strategic bombing, according to which warplanes fly deep into the enemy's territority in order to disable its industrial capacity. He demolishes the myth that the 1972 "Christmas bombing" brought Hanoi to its knees and that military victory was within reach if only "the politicians" had unleashed the Air Force's total power.

Jonathan Rieder - The Word of the Lord Is Upon Me, The Righteous Performance of Martin Luther King, Jr. (2008).jpg

“You don’t know me,” Martin Luther King, Jr., once declared to those who criticized his denunciation of the Vietnam War, who wanted to confine him to the ghetto of “black” issues. Now, forty years after being felled by an assassin’s bullet, it is still difficult to take the measure of the man: apostle of peace or angry prophet; sublime exponent of a beloved community or fiery Moses leading his people up from bondage; black preacher or translator of blackness to the white world?

This book explores the extraordinary performances through which King played with all of these possibilities, and others too, blending and gliding in and out of idioms and identities. Taking us deep into King’s backstage discussions with colleagues, his preaching to black congregations, his exhortations in mass meetings, and his crossover addresses to whites, Jonathan Rieder tells a powerful story about the tangle of race, talk, and identity in the life of one of America’s greatest moral and political leaders.

A brilliant interpretive endeavor grounded in the sociology of culture, The Word of the Lord Is Upon Me delves into the intricacies of King’s sermons, speeches, storytelling, exhortations, jokes, jeremiads, taunts, repartee, eulogies, confessions, lamentation, and gallows humor, as well as the author’s interviews with members of King’s inner circle. The King who emerges is a distinctively modern figure who, in straddling the boundaries of diverse traditions, ultimately transcended them all.

Richard Hill - War at Sea in the Ironclad Age (200 0).jpg

Navies once had to depend on the kindness of winds to move them towards their destination--but, in one of the most dramatic changes in military machinery, the ironclad, steam-powered ship took over. This new armored warship ensured British invincibility at sea, and secured for them the most extensive empire ever known. But, the English were not the lone beneficiaries of these new battleships: they also proved crucial during other wars, as well, including the American Civil War. With the help of over 150 illustrations and color maps, including computer-generated cartography, an eminent former Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy describes the changes in technology that led to these supreme instruments of sea warfare, the evolution in weapons and tactics, and the strategies that forever transformed conflict on the high seas.

Robert C. Fuller - Religious Revolutionaries, The Rebels Who Reshaped American Religion (2004).jpg

In this clever and entertaining look at the United States and religious freedom, Robert C. Fuller introduces us to religious revolutionaries who, in very unique ways, shaped American religious tradition and fought to establish new forms of spirituality. Chronological in scope, Religious Revolutionaries takes us from Puritanism and Calvinism in America's colonial period to present-day belief systems. We meet religious rebels who are widely recognized, such as Thomas Jefferson, the architect of our constitutional guarantee of religious freedom. We meet Andrew Jackson Davis, America's first trance channeler and forceful champion of the inner divinity of every person. We are introduced to Mary Daly, who openly confronted the sexist bias of most organized religion. We also learn about trailblazers such as Phineas P. Quimby, who challenged the Protestant theology of his day and whose ideas became the foundation for Christian Science philosophy, and James Cone, the bold spokesperson for black power and black spirituality. Religious Revolutionaries is a page-turner that focuses on the people who shaped religion in the United States, but it is also a captivating journey through the history of our diverse country.

William H. Roberts - Now for the Contest, Coastal and Oceanic Naval Operations in the Civil War (200 4)(1).jpg

Now for the Contest tells the story of the Civil War at sea in the context of three campaigns: the blockade of the southern coast, the raiding of Union commerce, and the projection of power ashore. The Civil War at sea was profoundly influenced by innovation and asymmetry—both sides embraced innovation, but differences in their resources and their strategic objectives pushed them down different paths. At its peak the Union navy boasted over fifty thousand men and nearly seven hundred ships. The Confederate navy was far smaller, never exceeding some five thousand men, and it numbered its ships in the tens rather than the hundreds. The Confederacy’s “technology strategy” and its overseas programs formed the main counterweight to the Union’s numerical force.
Now for the Contest also examines how both sides mobilized and employed their resources for a war that proved to be of unprecedented intensity and duration. For both antagonists the conduct of the naval war was complicated by rapid technological change, as steam power, metal armor, and more powerful ordnance sparked experiment and innovation both in naval construction and in tactics. The war years brought tremendous change to a service that did not always welcome it. Innovative technologies flourished in this hothouse atmosphere, however, and a rising generation of naval leaders would carry the knowledge of combat into the long peace that followed.

David Eisenhower - Eisenhower at War 1943-1945 (19 86).jpg

This is the first part of what David Eisenhower's intended political biography of his grandfather. The main thrust of the book is how Eisenhower's decisions in WW II were made, and the tensions that existed in the USA/British alliance during the war. The Anvil/Dragoon controversy is given full length because it was one of the most contended points of the allaince. The fighting of the war is distinctly in the background. It isn't clear to me how much personal analysis David Eisenhower put into the fighting aspect of the book. In a number of places it seems that he relys on the historians. Because of this, I think that it is important to keep in mind that this probably isn't an important book in terms of military history, even though it is very important in terms of understanding the political aspects of the war. Almost all the other books on WW II ignore the political aspects.

Getachew Metaferia - Ethiopia and the United State s, History, Diplomacy, and Analysis (2008).jpg

For this fascinating examination of more than a century of diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and the United States, Prof. Metaferia consulted archival and declassified documents, interviewed government officials, translated Amharic sources and, above all, employed his political science expertise in interpreting and analyzing events.
The book begins with historical references that describe how Ethiopia was viewed by ancient civilizations, then moves to an analysis of Ethiopia s relationship with European powers in the late 19th century which shaped the psyche of its leaders. Ethiopia s encirclement by potentially hostile colonial powers compelled its leaders to ally with the United States which appeared to have no colonial motives. And the US, despite its isolationist postures, saw commercial and strategic military potential in establishing links with Ethiopia.

Ethio US relations gradually flourished, and the two countries collaborated on regional security in the Horn of Africa as well as through trade. Ethiopia supported the US during the Korean War and provided a communications base in Asmara. Given Ethiopia s location between Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda, and its long history, it continues to offer the US crucial strategic opportunities.
Yet somehow, despite longtime US contributions to Ethiopia s development, institutional, and human capacity building, Ethiopia has lagged behind in all indices of development. The book compels its readers to ponder why some countries remain marginalized and how development efforts could have maximum results.
Dr. Metaferia affirms that even friendly relations between nations can potentially fracture as long as donor countries ignore the welfare of aid recipient nations, and he calls for a new paradigm for the establishment of a stable foreign relationship in the rapidly changing power alliances of the 21st century.
Academics and the general public interested in the dynamics of relations between nations will benefit from this timely and seminal work. Although the focus of the book is on the Ethio US relations, the study and analysis has a wider ramification as it reflects the experiences of various other countries. Students of history, political science, and especially US foreign policy and African studies, development strategists, foreign policy practitioners and the general public will find the book useful as they seek to understand the current turmoil in Ethiopia and a range of other nations, as Ethiopia's experience with the United States mirrors in a microcosm the experience of many others. The book fills a gap in the libraries of graduate and undergraduate departments of African Studies, US International Relations/Foreign Policy, and Diplomatic History.

Karen Iacobbo, Michael Iacobbo - Vegetarians and V egans in America Today (2006).jpg

Vegetarianism is not a diet trend, or the flavor of the month. Instead, it is a philosophy and practice with roots in antiquity. Vegetarianism has existed for centuries in much of the world as a social movement and subculture. In the United States, this subculture has existed for more than 200 years. In this book, the Iacobbos bring this thriving subculture to life. By examining the community's businesses, organizations, events, scholarship, and influence on the arts, and interviewing vegetarians and vegans, the authors reveal for the reader a subculture whose members hold a variety of perspectives on everything from animal rights to advocacy, politics, and religion. Building upon their previous book, a history of vegetarianism, the Iacobbos delve into its current incarnations. They include information on the food industry, health studies on the benefits of vegetarians and vegan ways of eating, the popularity of vegetarianism, and the backlash against it. They highlight the work of vegetarian advocates and provide a glimpse of the stores, magazines, restaurants, and organizations that bring this subculture together. Finally, they include projections for the future from vegetarians, environmentalists, lawyers, nutritionists, economists, and experts in animal rights.

Robert D. Bullard, Beverly Wright - Race, Place, a nd Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina, Struggles to Reclaim, Rebuild (2009).jpg

USA Books1 - Robert D. Bullard, Beverly Wright - Race, Place, and E...Hurricane Katrina, Struggles to Reclaim, Rebuild 2009.jpg

“There have been many books written about Hurricane Katrina but none has the range and power of Race, Place, and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina. Bullard, Wright, and the contributors cover all the issues: the pre-existing social and environmental injustices, the lack of preparation for disaster, and the skewed political and economic structure that made sure that Katrina’s wrath would be felt most sharply in low-income communities of color. But most significantly, they offer one of the most detailed, analytical, and rigorous looks at the aftermath: the toxic soup left behind, the economic, physical and social challenges of rebuilding, and the shifting demographics and politics of New Orleans. This is a must-read for anyone concerned with the devastating effects Katrina had on Louisiana and the nation, and a worthy anchor text for courses on environmental justice, social inequality, and the American future.”
—Manuel Pastor, University of Southern California

“Race, Place, and Environmental Justice reveals how the political disasters confronting New Orleans before Katrina and in the rebuilding process afterwards wreaked far more damage on the city than the storm itself, a context that unfortunately prevails in virtually every major US city.”
—Gregory D. Squires, George Washington University

“The natural disaster of Katrina played out across a social landscape of racial injustice and savage inequality. Bullard and Wright have assembled a fascinating set of pioneering works on the antecedents, the storm, and the aftermath, providing key lessons for rebuilding New Orleans and our broader society. A major contribution to our understanding of who suffers from so- called natural disasters and how to recover.”
—J. Timmons Roberts, The College of William and Mary

“Anyone seriously studying Katrina's impact must read Professors Bullard and Wright. This book is a gem.”
—William Quigley, Loyola University New Orleans

“This heavily researched and annotated collection of essays on the ‘geography of vulnerability’ as found in the aftermath of Katrina is an overwhelming analysis of a microcosm of American society. Written by experts in environmental justice, land-use policy, and political science, it addresses everything from transportation infrastructure to social inequality and urban development. … With solid, fact-based conclusions, responsible recommendations, and chapters on rebuilding efforts, this title should serve as a textbook for today’s urban planners.”

Tareq Y. Ismael, William W. Haddad - Iraq, The Hum an Cost of History (2003).jpg

The people of Iraq have suffered for more than a decade from the most severe sanctions ever imposed on any nation in history. United Nations’ sanctions against Iraq began in August 1990, as an attempt to force Iraq out of Kuwait. The contributors to this volume reveal why the sanctions regime has failed in its most basic aims, and ask serious questions about the real motivations of the powers involved -- notably the US and the UK. The contributors explain how, if sanctions had been carefully applied, they could have worked. The massive bombing campaign of 1991 destroyed Iraq's social infrastructure. Sanctions should have been modified to meet the post-Gulf War environment. Also, the US and the UK refused to agree that sanctions would be lifted if Iraq complied -- left with little incentive to disarm, it is not surprising that Saddam Hussein did not cooperate. Why did the sanctions continue if they did not fulfill their avowed purpose? The contributors argue that the real motives of the US and the UK were much more complex: instead of revolving around violations of human rights, terrorism and nuclear weapons proliferation, sanctions may have had more to do with political powerbroking and the danger that Iraq and Iran presented to US hegemony in the oil-rich Middle East. Assessing these and other related questions, the contributors put forward the idea that the current sanctions against Iraq are illegal under international law.

Charles E. Clark - The Public Prints, The Newspape r in Anglo-American Culture, 1665-1740 (1994).jpg

The Public Prints is the first comprehensive study of the role of the earliest American newspapers in the society and culture of the eighteenth century. In the hands of Charles E. Clark, American newspaper publishing becomes a branch of the English world of print in a story that begins in the bustling streets of late seventeenth-century London and moves to the provincial towns of England and across the Atlantic. While Clark's most detailed attention in America is to the three multi-newspaper towns of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, evidence from Williamsburg, Charleston, and Barbados also contributes to generalizations about the craft and business of eighteenth-century publishing. Stressing continuing trans-Atlantic connections as well as English origins, Clark argues that the newspapers were a force both for "anglicization" in their attempts to replicate English culture in America and for "Americanization" in creating a fuller awareness of the British-American experience across colonial boundaries. He suggests, finally, that the newspapers' greatest cultural role in provincial America was the creation of a community bound by the celebration of common values and attachments through the shared ritual of reading.

Ralph Rene - NASA mooned America (1994).jpg

The book is about one of the greatest HOAXes in the worl'ds history: manned moon landings.

Sometimes it's hard to believe what you see by your own eyes is a deception. Artful, but deception.
This book gives nothing but facts. Author of the book spent more than a decade collecting info from various sources & asking himself (and others)
what it takes to send a man to the moon...
The results are in the book.

Our space ships routinely blast off to orbit the Earth. There is not a single doubt that
man is in space! However, there is much doubt that any man has ever gone beyond the
radiation shield provided by the Van Allen belts. As you will eventually learn from the
chapter titled Sunstroke, once beyond that shield space is riven with deadly radiation from
the Sun.

This book is niether a thesis nor an academic dissertation, nor is it written by an academic
expert. It provides a strong body of proof that we never landed men on the Moon.
