This is the second study in the Naval Historical Center’s monograph series, entitled “The U.S. Navy in the Modern World.” The purpose of the series is to bring to the attention of today’s naval personnel and other readers the contributions of the naval service to the nation, in war and peace, since 1945. During the Cold War, the Navy helped resist Communist aggression, deter nuclear and conventional attack on the United States, protect American trade at sea and ashore, strengthen regional alliances and foster the growth of democratic and free market institutions worldwide. The strength and overseas presence of the U.S. fleet often resolved crises without the use of force. But when force was necessary, the Navy fought hard and well.
In light of the Navy’s current emphasis on littoral operations, I believe that Assault from the Sea: The Amphibious Landing at Inchon, by Curtis A. Utz of our Contemporary History Branch, is an appropriate title for the series’ second work. His monograph demonstrates how the Navy’s veteran leadership, flexible organization, versatile ships and aircraft and great mobility gave the theater commander, General of the Army Douglas A. MacArthur, the ability to launch a devastating offensive against the North Korean invaders of South Korea.
In addition to the efforts of Mr. Utz, many others were involved in the production of this work. This project was skillfully supervised by Dr. Edward J. Marolda, who heads the Contemporary History Branch. As always, Dr. William S. Dudley, the center’s Senior Historian, provided invaluable advice. I also wish to thank Professor Roger Dingman of the University of Southern California, a distinguished authority on the Korean War; and Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC (Ret.), Director of Marine Corps History and Museums and an Inchon veteran, for their helpful comments and observations. The views expressed are those of Mr. Utz alone and not those of the Department of the Navy or any other agency of the U.S. government.

James H. Willbanks - The Tet Offensive, A Concise History (2006).jpg

"The 1968 Tet Offensive was easily the most important single event of the long Vietnam War, and recognized Vietnam War historian James Willbanks has written the best short analysis of it. His concise study deals effectively with the communist planning for the offensive and the battles themselves, as well as the myths surrounding the offensive and its political and military consequences. Those unfamiliar with the subject will find especially helpful the author's list of abbreviations, maps, chronology, glossary of terms, documents section, and annotated bibliography. This is a first-rate study." -- Spencer C. Tucker, author of Vietnam and The Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War

Jason Cochran - Pauline Frommer's Walt Disney Worl d and Orlando, 2nd Edition (2009).jpg

Spend less, see more. This is the philosophy behind Pauline Frommer’s guides. Written by travel expert Pauline Frommer (who is also the daughter of Arthur Frommer), and her team of hand-picked writers, these guides show how to truly experience a culture, meet locals, and save money along the way.

# Industry secrets on how to find the best hotel rooms
# Details on alternative accommodations, great neighborhood restaurants, and cool, offbeat finds
# Packed with personality and opinions

Even though most American families will make at least one pilgrimage to Orlando, too many of them end up spending far more than they have to for their vacations. This book initiates you into the world of savvy discount travel shopping, from finding the very lowest airfares to booking theme park tickets through the right sources so you pay less.

The book has a complete breakdown of every major theme park's attractions—their best seats, their histories, how to evade their long lines—with opinionated advice on which to hit and which to skip, depending on your taste and age (and the age of your kids).

We'll explore lodgings in depth, starting with the best theme-park-based hotels for your money. We also name reputable renters of palatial digs such as full houses and condos located less than two miles from Disney, which come with screened-in pool, free internet, private game rooms and more—all for less than you'd spend on a cramped hotel room.

# Pull back the curtain on Orlando and see how the "magic" is made:
# Slip backstage at Universal Studios and learn how its most complex rides work
# Explore the Utilidor, Walt Disney World's hidden underground passageways
# Be a dolphin trainer for the day at SeaWorld
# And more

Avoiding wallet drain for meals in Orlando is only half the battle. We cover secret, lesser-known local restaurants as well as give readers a useable, fun strategy for the best theme park meals.

We Are What We Eat tells the story of how ethnicity has influenced American eating habits. It is a complex tale of ethnic mingling and borrowing, of entrepreneurship and connoisseurship, of food as a social and political symbol and weapon -- and a thoroughly entertaining history of our multicultural culinary tradition.

Ellen Ruppel Shell - Cheap, The High Cost of Disco unt Culture (2009).jpg

An Atlantic correspondent uncovers the true cost-in economic, political, and psychic terms-of our penchant for making and buying things as cheaply as possible

From the shuttered factories of the rust belt to the look-alike strip malls of the sun belt-and almost everywhere in between-America has been transformed by its relentless fixation on low price. This pervasive yet little examined obsession is arguably the most powerful and devastating market force of our time-the engine of globalization, outsourcing, planned obsolescence, and economic instability in an increasingly unsettled world.

Low price is so alluring that we may have forgotten how thoroughly we once distrusted it. Ellen Ruppel Shell traces the birth of the bargain as we know it from the Industrial Revolution to the assembly line and beyond, homing in on a number of colorful characters, such as Gene Verkauf (his name is Yiddish for "to sell"), founder of E. J. Korvette, the discount chain that helped wean customers off traditional notions of value. The rise of the chain store in post-Depression America led to the extolling of convenience over quality, and big-box retailers completed the reeducation of the American consumer by making them prize low price in the way they once prized durability and craftsmanship.

The effects of this insidious perceptual shift are vast: a blighted landscape, escalating debt (both personal and national), stagnating incomes, fraying communities, and a host of other socioeconomic ills. That's a long list of charges, and it runs counter to orthodox economics which argues that low price powers productivity by stimulating a brisk free market. But Shell marshals evidence from a wide range of fields-history, sociology, marketing, psychology, even economics itself-to upend the conventional wisdom. Cheap also unveils the fascinating and unsettling illogic that underpins our bargain-hunting reflex and explains how our deep-rooted need for bargains colors every aspect of our psyches and social lives. In this myth-shattering, closely reasoned, and exhaustively reported investigation, Shell exposes the astronomically high cost of cheap.

M. Scott Peck - The Road Less Traveled and Beyond, Spiritual Growth in an Age of Anxiety (1998).jpg

The Road Less Traveled and Beyond is the culmination of a lifetime of Dr. M. Scott Peck's counseling, lecturing, and writing, and the conclusion of the "Road" trilogy. In it, we are led to a deeper awareness of how to live rich, fulfilling lives in a world fraught with stress and anxiety.

With the rare combination of profound psychological insight and deep spirituality that has already spoken to millions of readers, Dr. Peck talks about decision making and the choices we make every day in business and at home, and the ethical choices that may affect the very survival of humankind. We learn the difference between good and evil, to overcome narcissism, to love and be loved, to live with paradox, to accept the consequences of our actions all through life, and to come to terms with dying and death.

Dr. Peck is a guide on the adventure that is life, learning, and spiritual growth—life's greatest adventure. Building in depth and power from the very first chapter to its lyrical and poetic conclusion, The Road Less Traveled and Beyond is an adventure in itself.

Myrna Chandler Goldstein, Mark A. Goldstein - Cont roversies in Food and Nutrition (2002).jpg

Foods often contain a host of different additives. Some are considered safe. Others are believed to trigger undesirable reactions in some people. Open your kitchen cabinets. Most of the items inside probably contain some food additives. For example, look at the list of ingredients on the label of a can of chicken noodle soup: Chicken broth, enriched penne pasta (semolina, egg whites, niacin, ferrous sulfate, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), carrots, celery, salt, monosodium glutamate, hydrolyzed corn and soy protein, chicken fat, onion powder, autolyzed yeast extract, parsley, natural flavor.
All these products are contained in one 19-ounce can. Some of them—such as chicken broth, carrots, celery, chicken fat, onion powder, and parsley—are straightforward, but why add monosodium glutamate or hydrolyzed corn and soy protein? According to the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, food additives—substances that are usually not eaten alone but are added to other foods—play an important role in enhancing the quality of our food supply. Additives can help keep food wholesome and appealing while it is being transported to markets thousands of miles from where it was grown or manufactured. And, additives that enhance taste, texture, consistency or color can also improve the nutritional value and physical appeal of foods.

Drew Curtis - It's Not News, It's Fark, How Mass M edia Tries to Pass Off Crap As News (2008).jpg

Now in paperback, the hilarious exposé on the media gone awry, from the creator of the wildly popular Fark.com

Have you ever noticed certain patterns in the news you see and read each day? Perhaps it’s the blatant fear-mongering in the absence of facts on your local six o’clock news (“Tsunami could hit the Atlantic any day!” Everybody panic!), or the seasonal articles that appear year after year (“Roads will be crowded this holiday season.” Thanks, AAA.) It’s Not News, It’s Fark is Drew Curtis’s clever examination of the state of the media today and a hilarious look at the go-to stories mass media uses when there’s just not enough hard news to fill a newspaper or a news broadcast. Drew exposes eight stranger-than-fiction media patterns that prove just how little reporting is going on in the world of reporters today. It’s Not News, It’s Fark examines all the “news” that was never fit for print in the first place, and promises to have you laughing along the way.

Lincoln Geraghty - American Science Fiction Film a nd Television (2009).jpg

American Science Fiction Film and Television presents a critical history of late 20th Century SF together with an analysis of the cultural and thematic concerns of this popular genre. Science fiction film and television were initially inspired by the classic literature of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. The potential and fears born with the Atomic age fuelled the popularity of the genre, upping the stakes for both technology and apocalypse. From the Cold War through to America's current War on Terror, science fiction has proved a subtle vehicle for the hopes, fears and preoccupations of a nation at war.The definitive introduction to American science fiction, this book is also the first study to analyze SF across both film and TV. Throughout, the discussion is illustrated with critical case studies of key films and television series, including The Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The X-Files, and Battlestar Galactica.

Robert Stanley - Dimensions of Law in the Service of Order, Origins of the Federal Income Tax, 1861- 1913 (1993)(1).jpg

USA Books1 - Robert Stanley - Dimensions of Law in the Service of ..., Origins of the Federal Income Tax, 1861-1913 19931.jpg

A sophisticated and accessible application of the newest theoretical work in public-policy history and legal studies, this book is a detailed account of how a permanent income tax was enacted into law in the United States. The tax originated as an apology for the aggressive manipulation of other forms of taxation, especially the tariff, during the Civil War. Levied with very low rates on a small proportion of the population and raising little revenue, the early tax was designed to preserve imbalances in the structure of wealth and opportunity, rather than to ameliorate or abolish them, by strengthening the status quo against fundamental attacks by the political left and right. This book shows that the early course of income taxation was more clearly the product of centrist ideological agreement, despite occasional divergences, than of "conservative-liberal" allocative conflict.

Michael J. Martin - The Iraqi Prisoner Abuse Scand al (2005).jpg

It was the bloodiest day in American history since the battle of Antietam during the Civil War—a day in which everything about the nation would change forever. People, when speaking of the country, would henceforth specify “before September 11”or “after September 11.” It was as if, on that Tuesday morning, the borders had suddenly shifted to include Canada and Mexico, or as if the official language of the United States had changed. The difference between “before” and “after” was that pronounced.
That Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, was the day that Americans began to learn firsthand about terrorism, as first one fuel-heavy commercial airliner, and then a second, hit New York’s World Trade Towers—sending them thundering to the ground in a firestorm of smoke and ash. A third airliner was flown into a wall of the Pentagon in Washington,D.C., and a fourth was apparently wrestled away from terrorists before it could be steered into another building. By the time the explosions and collapses had stopped and the fires had been extinguished, more than three thousand Americans had died.

Bert Kinzey - U. S. Aircraft and Armament of Opera tion Desert Storm (1997).jpg

This volume in the Detail & Scale Series is being written in response to a very large number of requests.
We have received numerous phone calls and letters asking for a book in thisseries on the U.S. aircraft and armament of Operation Desert Storm. During a visit to Washington, D.C.. and a trip to the International Plastic Modelers Society's national conventions in St. Louis and Seattle, the author was approached time and time again about doing such a book. Almost everyone who contacted Detail & Scale made two very important points. First, they are far from pleased with most of the publications on Desert Storm that have been released so far. This is because many of these publications were rushed into print to make a quick profit off of the war. As a result, the accuracy and scope of those books often suffered considerably. Some had photographs and information from only one source, and there was often an obvious lack of original research. Military photographers who took the photographs were not technical experts, and the captions that they supplied with their photos often contained errors. In attempts to beat another publisher's book to the market, these obvious errors were often left uncorrected.
