In Depoliticizing Development, John Harriss explores the origins of the idea of social capital and its diverse meanings in the work of James Coleman, Pierre Bourdieu and, more specifically, Robert Putnam, who is most responsible for the extraordinary rise of the idea of social capital through his work on Italy and the United States. Harriss asks why this notion should have taken off in the dramatic way that it has done and finds in its uses by the World Bank the attempt, systematically, to obscure class relations and power. Social capital has thus come to play a significant part in the discourses of international development, which go toward comprising ‘the anti-politics machine’. This powerful and lucid critique will be of immense value to all those interested in development studies, including sociologists, economists, planners, NGOs and other activists.

Linda S. Watts - Encyclopedia of American Folklore (2006).jpg

Folklore has been described as the unwritten literature of a culture: its songs, stories, sayings, games, rituals, beliefs, and ways of life. "Encyclopedia of American Folklore" helps readers explore topics, terms, themes, figures, and issues related to this popular subject. This comprehensive reference guide addresses the needs of multiple audiences, including high school, college, and public libraries, archive and museum collections, storytellers, and independent researchers. Its content and organization correspond to the ways educators integrate folklore within literacy and wider learning objectives for language arts and cultural studies at the secondary level. This new work connects United States folk forms with their cultural origin, historical context, and social function, making this volume a well-rounded resource for students of folklore. Appendixes include a bibliography, a category index, and a discussion of starting points for researching American folklore. References and bibliographic material throughout the text highlight recently published and commonly available materials for further study. Coverage includes: folk heroes and legendary figures, including Paul Bunyan and Yankee Doodle; fables, fairy tales, and myths often featured in American folklore, including "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Princess and the Pea"; American authors who have added to or modified folklore traditions, including Washington Irving; historical events that gave rise to folklore, including the Civil Rights movement and the Revolutionary War; terms in folklore studies, such as fieldwork and the Folklife Movement; holidays and observances, such as Christmas and Kwanzaa; topics related to folklore in everyday life, such as sports folklore and courtship/dating folklore; folklore related to cultural groups, such as Appalachian folklore and African-American folklore; and more.

Bruce Kraig - Hot Dog, A Global History (2009).jpg

Grilled and served in a fresh, soft bun, and adorned with your choice of mustard, ketchup, chili, sauerkraut, coleslaw, pickle relish or fried onion, the hot dog surely must be one of the world's favourite convenience foods. In Hot dog, well-known food historian Bruce Kraig recounts the history of this popular dish, from the origin of the sausage some 20,000 years ago, to the evolution of the modern form of the hot dog, and its central place in American and world culture today. The author examines the many types of hot dog sausage, including American varieties such as the Hebrew National, Vienna, Kahn or Morrell in Cincinnati, Pearl Brand (in Boston) and Sabrett, as well as international variants such as Italian bologna and German bockwurst. He also relates the US' myriad regional variations, from 'kosher-style' New York dogs, loaded with mustard and sauerkraut, to New England examples traditionally served with Boston Baked Beans, to Southern corn dogs, to South-western chili dogs, to the remarkable Chicago-style hot dog, which is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, sport peppers, a dash of celery salt and sometimes cucumber slices, but never ketchup. Hotdog also explores sometimes apocryphal tales of the hot dog in history: how the dish got its name for example, and how Queen Elizabeth II was served hot dogs during her visit to the White House in the 1950s. Packed with tasty facts and piquant observations, many illustrations and a selection of tempting recipes, this book shows how this seemingly simple food has a rich history, and is fundamentally linked to America's mythology of itself.

Economist and evolutionary game theorist Daniel Friedman demonstrates that our moral codes and our market systems-while often in conflict-are really devices evolved to achieve similar ends, and that society functions best when morals and markets are in balance with each other.

Ellen Israel Rosen - Making Sweatshops, The Global ization of the U.S, Apparel Industry (2002).jpg

The only comprehensive historical analysis of the globalization of the U.S. apparel industry, this book focuses on the reemergence of sweatshops in the United States and the growth of new ones abroad. Ellen Israel Rosen, who has spent more than a decade investigating the problems of America's domestic apparel workers, now probes the shifts in trade policy and global economics that have spawned momentous changes in the international apparel and textile trade. Making Sweatshops asks whether the process of globalization can be promoted in ways that blend industrialization and economic development in both poor and rich countries with concerns for social and economic justice--especially for the women who toil in the industry's low-wage sites around the world.
Rosen looks closely at the role trade policy has played in globalization in this industry. She traces the history of current policies toward the textile and apparel trade to cold war politics and the reconstruction of the Pacific Rim economies after World War II. Her narrative takes us through the rise of protectionism and the subsequent dismantling of trade protection during the Reagan era to the passage of NAFTA and the continued push for trade accords through the WTO. Going beyond purely economic factors, this valuable study elaborates the full historical and political context in which the globalization of textiles and apparel has taken place. Rosen takes a critical look at the promises of prosperity, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, made by advocates for the global expansion of these industries. She offers evidence to suggest that this process may inevitably create new and more extreme forms of poverty.

Jeffrey F. Meyer - Myths in Stone, Religious Dimen sions of Washington, D.C. (2001).jpg

Washington, D.C., is a city of powerful symbols--from the dominance of the Capitol dome and Washington Monument to the authority of the Smithsonian. This book takes us on a fascinating and informative tour of the nation's capital as Jeffrey F. Meyer unravels the complex symbolism of the city and explores its meaning for our national consciousness. Meyer finds that mythic and religious themes pervade the capital--in its original planning, in its monumental architecture, and in the ritualized events that have taken place over the 200 years the city has been the repository for the symbolism of the nation. As Meyer tours the city's famous axial layout, he discusses many historical figures and events, compares Washington to other great cities of the world such as Beijing and Berlin, and discusses the meaning and history of its architecture and many works of art. Treating Washington, D.C., as a complex religious center, Meyer finds that the city functions as a unifying element in American consciousness. This book will change the way we look at Washington, D.C., and provide a provocative new look at the meaning of religion in America today. It will also be a valuable companion for those traveling to this city that was envisioned from its inception as the center of the world.

Stephen P. Rice - Minding the Machine, Languages o f Class in Early Industrial America (2006).jpg

In this innovative book, Stephen P. Rice offers a new understanding of class formation in America during the several decades before the Civil War. This was the period in the nation's early industrial development when travel by steamboat became commonplace, when the railroad altered concepts of space and time, and when Americans experienced the beginnings of factory production. These disorienting changes raised a host of questions about what machinery would accomplish. Would it promote equality or widen the distance between rich and poor? Among the most contentious questions were those focusing on the social consequences of mechanization: while machine enthusiasts touted the extent to which machines would free workers from toil, others pointed out that people needed to tend machines, and that that work was fundamentally degrading and exploitative. Minding the Machine shows how members of a new middle class laid claim to their social authority and minimized the potential for class conflict by playing out class relations on less contested social and technical terrains. As they did so, they defined relations between shopowners--and the overseers, foremen, or managers they employed--and wage workers as analogous to relations between head and hand, between mind and body, and between human and machine. Rice presents fascinating discussions of the mechanics' institute movement, the manual labor school movement, popular physiology reformers, and efforts to solve the seemingly intractable problem of steam boiler explosions. His eloquent narrative demonstrates that class is as much about the comprehension of social relations as it is about the making of social relations, and that class formation needs to be understood not only as a social struggle but as a conceptual struggle.

J. Samuel Walker - Three Mile Island, A Nuclear Cr isis in Historical Perspective (2004).jpg

Twenty-five years ago, Hollywood released The China Syndrome, featuring Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas as a TVnews crew who witness what appears to be a serious accident at a nuclear power plant. In a spectacular coincidence, on March 28, 1979, less than two weeks after the movie came out, the worst accident in the history of commercial nuclear power in the United States occurred at Three Mile Island. For five days, the citizens of central Pennsylvania and the entire world, amid growing alarm, followed the efforts of authorities to prevent the crippled plant from spewing dangerous quantities of radiation into the environment. This book is the first comprehensive account of the causes, context, and consequences of the Three Mile Island crisis. In gripping prose, J. Samuel Walker captures the high human drama surrounding the accident, sets it in the context of the heated debate over nuclear power in the seventies, and analyzes the social, technical, and political issues it raised. His superb account of those frightening and confusing days will clear up misconceptions held to this day about Three Mile Island. The heart of Walker's suspenseful narrative is a moment-by-moment account of the accident itself, in which he brings to life the players who dealt with the emergency: the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the state of Pennsylvania, the White House, and a cast of scientists and reporters. He also looks at the aftermath of the accident on the surrounding area, including studies of its long-term health effects on the population, providing a fascinating window onto the politics of nuclear power and an authoritative account of a critical event in recent American history.

Josh Sides - L.A. City Limits, African American Lo s Angeles from the Great Depression to the Present (2004).jpg

USA Books1 - Josh Sides - L.A. City Limits, African American Los A...Angeles from the Great Depression to the Present 2004.jpg

In 1964 an Urban League survey ranked Los Angeles as the most desirable city for African Americans to live in. In 1965 the city burst into flames during one of the worst race riots in the nation's history. How the city came to such a pass--embodying both the best and worst of what urban America offered black migrants from the South--is the story told for the first time in this history of modern black Los Angeles. A clear-eyed and compelling look at black struggles for equality in L.A.'s neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces from the Great Depression to our day, L.A. City Limits critically refocuses the ongoing debate about the origins of America's racial and urban crisis. Challenging previous analysts' near-exclusive focus on northern "rust-belt" cities devastated by de-industrialization, Josh Sides asserts that the cities to which black southerners migrated profoundly affected how they fared. He shows how L.A.'s diverse racial composition, dispersive geography, and dynamic postwar economy often created opportunities--and limits--quite different from those encountered by blacks in the urban North.

Ruth H. Bloch - Gender and Morality in Anglo-Ameri can Culture, 1650-1800 (2003).jpg

Ruth Bloch's stellar essays on the origins of Anglo-American conceptions of gender and morality are brought together in this valuable book, which collects six of her most influential pieces in one place for the first time and includes two new essays. The volume illuminates the overarching theme of her work by addressing a basic historical question: Why did the attitudes toward gender and family relations that we now consider traditional values emerge when they did? Bloch looks deeply into eighteenth-century culture to answer this question, highlighting long-term developments in religion, intellectual history, law, and literature, showing that the eighteenth century was a time of profound transformation for women's roles as wives and mothers, for ideas about sexuality, and for notions of female moral authority. She engages topics from British moral philosophy to colonial laws regarding courtship, and from the popularity of the sentimental novel to the psychology of religious revivalism. Lucid, provocative, and wide-ranging, these eight essays bring a revisionist challenge to both women's studies and cultural studies as they ask us to reconsider the origins of the system of gender relations that has dominated American culture for two hundred years.

USA Books1 - Michael L. Roberts - United States Naval Aviation Patc...Aircraft, Attack Squadrons, Helicopter Squadrons 1995.jpg

The patch is a customized emblem designed specifically for a particular organization. An emblem is often displayed on patches, decals, plaques and other memorabilia. Pride and comradery in the crew is a direct result of the patch as a daily reminder that a specific unit is the best in the Navy. In the past, patches were designed by and for the unit members. Although not approved by Navy Regulations until the 1950s, for Unofficial use only, Navy units have proudly displayed their patches since World War II. Today, patches are both Official and Unofficial. The Official version has either been designed or approved by the Naval Board of Heraldry, with each element and color of the design having a specific meaning. This is the second of three volumes covering Naval Aviation patches from World War II to the present each volume will contain over 1000 patches in full color. This volume covers the patches of individual aircraft (attack, cargo, electronic warfare, fighter, helicopter, patrol, anti-submarine, training), fixed-wing squadrons (VA, VA(AW), VAH, RVAH, VAHM, VAK, VAL, VAN, VAP, VAQ, VAW), and helicopter squadrons (HAL, HC, HCS, HCT, HM, HS, HSL, HT, HU).
