Seeking to reclaim a history that has remained largely ignored by most historians, this dramatic and stirring account examines each of the definitive American cooperative movements for social change—farmer, union, consumer, and communalist—that have been all but erased from collective memory. Focusing far beyond one particular era, organization, leader, or form of cooperation, the expansive analysis documents the multigenerational struggle of the American working people for social justice. With an expansive sweep and breathtaking detail, the chronicle considers Native American times and follows the American worker from the colonial workshop to the modern mass-assembly line, ultimately painting a vivid panorama of those who built the United States and those who will shape its future.

Mark Rudd - Underground, My Life with SDS and the Weatherme (2009).jpg

The leader of the student uprising of 1968 and founding member of the notorious Weather Underground tells his story—for the first time
In 1968, Mark Rudd led the legendary occupation of five buildings at Columbia University, a dramatic act of protest against the university's support for the Vietnam War and its institutional racism. Rudd was the charismatic chairman of the Columbia chapter of SDS, Students for a Democratic Society, the largest radical student organization in the United States. After a violent police bust, the Columbia occupation turned into a student strike that closed down the entire campus, turning Rudd into a national symbol of student revolt. Rudd went on to become the cofounder of the Weatherman faction of SDS, which took control of the student organization and helped organize the notorious Days of Rage in Chicago in 1969.
But Mark Rudd wanted revolution.
Rudd and his friends sought to end war, racism, and injustice—by any means necessary, even violence. After a tragic turn that led to the death of three people, who were killed when the bombs they were making in a Greenwich Village town house exploded, they transformed themselves into the Weather Underground Organization. By the end of 1970, after a string of nonlethal bombings by the organization, Rudd, now one of the FBI's Most Wanted, went into hiding for more than seven years before turning himself in to great media fanfare.
In this gripping narrative, Rudd speaks out about this tumultuous period, the role he played in its crucial events, and its aftermath, revealing the drama and tension, as well as the naïveté of young activists, fighting in the name of peace and social justice, who believed that their actions mattered.
"I've spoken and answered questions at scores of colleges, high schools, community centers, and theaters about why my friends and I opted for violent revolution, and how I've changed my thinking and how I haven't, and most of all, about the parallels between then and now," Rudd writes. Powerful and shocking, Underground sheds new light on this controversial time, which still haunts the nation.

T.V. Paul - The Tradition of Non-Use of Nuclear We apons (2009).jpg

Since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks, no state has unleashed nuclear weapons. What explains this? According to the author, the answer lies in a prohibition inherent in the tradition of non-use, a time-honored obligation that has been adhered to by all nuclear states—thanks to a consensus view that use would have a catastrophic impact on humankind, the environment, and the reputation of the user.

The book offers an in-depth analysis of the nuclear policies of the U.S., Russia, China, the UK, France, India, Israel, and Pakistan and assesses the contributions of these states to the rise and persistence of the tradition of nuclear non-use. It examines the influence of the tradition on the behavior of nuclear and non-nuclear states in crises and wars, and explores the tradition's implications for nuclear non-proliferation regimes, deterrence theory, and policy. And it concludes by discussing the future of the tradition in the current global security environment.

Allen C. Guelzo - Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Idea s (2009).jpg

This title offers a look into the mind of Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was a skilled politician, an inspirational leader, and a man of humor and pathos. What many may not realize is how much he was also a man of ideas. Despite the most meager of formal educations, Lincoln's tremendous intellectual curiosity drove him into the circle of Enlightenment philosophy and democratic political ideology. And from these, Lincoln developed a set of political convictions that guided him throughout his life and his presidency. "Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Ideas", a compilation of ten essays from Lincoln scholar Allen C. Guelzo uncovers the sources of Lincoln's ideas and examines the beliefs that directed his career and brought an end to slavery and the Civil War. These essays reveal Lincoln to be a man of impressive intellectual probity and depth as well as a man of great contradictions. He was an apostle of freedom who did not believe in human free will; a champion of the Constitution who had to step outside of it in order to save it; a man of many acquaintances and admirers, but few friends; a man who opposed slavery but also opposed the abolition of it; and, a man of prudence who took more political risks than any other president. Guelzo explores the many facets of Lincoln's ideas, and especially the influence of the Founding Fathers and the great European champions of democracy. And he links the sixteenth president's struggles with the issues of race, emancipation, religion, and civil liberties to the challenges these issues continue to offer to Americans today. Lincoln played many roles in his life - lawyer, politician, president - but in each he was driven by a core of values, convictions, and beliefs about economics, society, and democracy. "Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Ideas" is a broad and exciting survey of the ideas that made Lincoln great, just as we celebrate the bicentennial his birth.

Michael Allaby - Tornadoes, Revised Edition (2004).jpg

By far the most vehement storm known on Earth, the tornado has an average life span of no more than half an hour. Yet, during that time, it will expend about as much energy as is used to light the streets of New York City for one night. This updated and revised volume in the Dangerous Weather series explores tornadoes.
Organized and written in an easy-to-follow style, author Michael Allaby answers the most important questions students and non-specialists have about tornadoes and he provides a general overview of the current information that shapes the way tornadoes are understood and studied. Featured coverage includes a definition of tornado; discussion about what happens when warm and cold air collide and how wind changes with height; explanations of jet streams, squall lines, thunderstorms, supercells, vortices and angular momentum, dust devils, and waterspouts; answers to questions such as how does a tornado begin, what happens inside a tornado, how does a tornado travel, and how does a tornado die; and a look at when and where tornadoes happen, Tornado Alley, tornadoes in Europe, and tornadoes of the past.

Pearson - Longman Dictionary of American English, Special Edition (2009).jpg

The 4th edition of the Longman Dictionary of American English has been researched
and revised to meet the real needs of learners of English. The up-dated text now includes
thousands of words for content areas such as Science, Economics and Social Science, as
well as Word Origins and updated thesaurus boxes that give extra help with vocabulary
acquisition.
Real Language
All Longman dictionaries are based on the authentic language data in the Longman Corpus
Network. This unique computerized language database now contains over 400 million
words from all types of written texts, and from real conversations recorded across the US.
The Corpus tells us how frequently words and phrases are used, so there is no guesswork in
deciding which ones students need to know most. The Corpus also shows which grammar
patterns are the most important to illustrate, which important new words and idioms people
use every day, and which words are frequently used together (collocations). We take our
example sentences from the Corpus, and this makes the language come alive as never before.
Real Clarity
The definitions in Longman dictionaries are written using only the 2,000 most common
English words – the Longman American Defining Vocabulary. Longman pioneered the
use of a limited vocabulary as the best way to guarantee that definitions are clear and easy
to understand. The meaning you want is easy to find. Words that have a large number of
meanings have short, clear signposts to guide you to the right meaning quickly.
The comprehensive grammatical information is easy to understand and use. Important
patterns are highlighted in the example sentences, so that you can see at a glance how to
use a word in a sentence.
Real Help
The 4th edition of the Longman Dictionary of American English is the result of extensive
research into learners needs and abilities. Thesaurus boxes explain thousands of synonyms
and antonyms to help users expand their vocabulary, so that instead of using the same
words all the time, such as the word angry, for example, they learn how to use related words
such as annoyed, irritated, furious, etc. Additional Thesaurus boxes now also help learners
expand their academic and content vocabulary.
The writers have also used their knowledge from years of teaching to analyze the Longman
Learner’s Corpus, which is a computerized collection of over 8 million words of writing in
English by learners. By studying the errors students make in essays and exams, the writers
were able to give clear, helpful usage information throughout the dictionary – in the
definitions, example sentences, and usage notes – to help students avoid common errors.
The grammar codes and labels are inside the front cover, and the IPA (International
Phonetic Alphabet) pronunciation charts are inside the back cover, so they are always
easy to find and use.
Whether you are writing an essay, sending an e-mail, or talking with friends, the Longman
Dictionary of American English will help you choose the right words, understand them
clearly, and use them correctly.

Julie Decker, Chris Chiei - Quonset Hut, Metal Liv ing For The Modern Age (2005).jpg

When World War II came along, the American military found itself in need of a prefabricated, lightweight shelter that could be easily shipped and quickly assembled. The quonset hut, that sliced tube of corrugated metal, was the answer. Over a hundred thousand were produced as part of the war effort. In its aftermath, even more were built and existing huts were adapted to house the postwar population boom. Of course, it couldn't last: the American desire for permanence meant decay and neglect for many of these rough-and-ready shelters and quickie warehouses. But in the midst of its almost tragic tale of extinction, the quonset hut has emerged as an unexpected icon of Americana and an oasis of architectural imagination. Travel the back roads of America and you will find the quonset's distinctive shape enclosing everything from houses of worship to houses of pancakes. Quonset Hut tells the story of this unique architectural phenomena, from its birth during WWII as a mass-production shelter to its new status as an icon of American pragmatism, ingenuity, perseverance, and individuality.

Concord 6503 - Gordon Rottman, Dmitriy Zgonnik - J ust cause. Intervention in Panama 1989-90 (2007).jpg

The turmoil leading to the American intervention in Panama to oust the de facto ruler. General Manuel Antonio Noriega, began in early 1987. Reports of repeated human rights violations within Panama and increasing drug trafficking began eroding the support Noriega once enjoyed inside his country.
The United States had supported Noriega before he started abusing his power. He relied on the US for military and economic aid, which had begun to lift Panama to a leading power in Central America. The controversial Carter-Torrijos Treaty of 1978 took affect on 1 October 1979 and at that time the former Panama Canal Zone, up to then under complete US control, was dissolved. The US though still operated the Panama Canal through the Panama Canal Commission and maintained extensive military facilities throughout what had been the Zone. US Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), a joint service command responsible for US armed forces operations and assistance throughout Latin America, was headquartered in Panama City as was US Army, South (USARSO). The US was still responsible for the defense of the Canal and had full right of access throughout what had been the former Canal Zone. The Canal would be turned over to Panamanian control on 31 December 2000 and all US armed forces would be withdrawn by then. Panama would then be responsible for the Canal's operation and security. New Year's Day 2000 would see Panamanian territory and the Canal under its complete control for the first time since 1903.

USA Books1 - Concord - Colour Series 3004 - Samuel M. Katz - Ameri...iers, The 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry 1994.jpg

FORT DRUM, NEW YORK, DECEMBER 1992: On a snow covered peak surrounded by pine trees and dusted with the white remnants of an upstate New York winter's storm, two soldiers, conveniently camouflaged by their white coveralls, patiently awaits the order to fire. The soldiers are an anti-tank team, expert sharpshooters with their M47 Dragon Medium Anti-Tank Guided Weapon, and have been laying in wait in the snow for nearly four hours. Their Dragon ATGW is lethal against armor, and the approaching tank's only hope in eliminating the threat is to locate the Dragon team, and obliterate it with a burst of fire from its 105mm main armament gun. But the Dragon team has an edge—they are invisible. These soldiers are experts in winter warfare, and can function freely in five feet of snow and in sub-freezing temperatures. As mountain troopers expected to operate in the winter, these men are also expert in utilizing the geographic and climatic conditions (snow, rain and ice) in their surroundings to their maximum advantage—they can turn a beautiful snowfall into a convenient and indistinguishable veil of camouflaging cover; they can live in the woods and survive in the elements without supply or outside assistance in the most frigid of temperatures; and, they can turn a storybook snow covered hill or forest into a lethal field of fire. Most importantly, they are expert in becoming invisible—a most valued combat skill when part of a unit trained to fight in small components. Although a two-man Dragon team is no answer to advancing armor, this team is meant to stalk, harass, and destroy; in high snows and narrow mountain ravines, two-man anti-tank teams can be as effective as a full division of armor, especially a team, trained to march dozens of kilometers in high snows with speed and stealth, and also armed with 84mm AT-4s slung across their backs. As the tank, a remote controlled armored mock-up, advances through the narrow mountain road, the order to fire is given. The trigger is depressed and the Dragon launched in a furious explosion; the gunner's white winter smock catches fire from the blast but it is extinguished by the cooling snow. In a trail of destruction, the warhead hits the vehicle and erupts in a powerful explosion. Yet even before the "tank" is completely devoured by flames, the tank-killer team has picked up its gear and slinked silently Into the treeline toward their next ambush. This exercise is nothing special for them—after all, they are veterans of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). One of America's finest.

Naoko Shibusawa - America's Geisha Ally, Reimagini ng the Japanese Enemy (2006).jpg

During World War II, Japan was vilified by America as our hated enemy in the East. Though we distinguished "good Germans" from the Nazis, we condemned all Japanese indiscriminately as fanatics and savages. As the Cold War heated up, however, the U.S. government decided to make Japan its bulwark against communism in Asia.

But how was the American public made to accept an alliance with Japan so soon after the "Japs" had been demonized as subhuman, bucktoothed apes with Coke-bottle glasses? In this revelatory work, Naoko Shibusawa charts the remarkable reversal from hated enemy to valuable ally that occurred in the two decades after the war. While General MacArthur's Occupation Forces pursued our nation's strategic goals in Japan, liberal American politicians, journalists, and filmmakers pursued an equally essential, though long-unrecognized, goal: the dissemination of a new and palatable image of the Japanese among the American public.

With extensive research, from Occupation memoirs to military records, from court documents to Hollywood films, and from charity initiatives to newspaper and magazine articles, Shibusawa demonstrates how the evil enemy was rendered as a feminized, submissive nation, as an immature youth that needed America's benevolent hand to guide it toward democracy. Interestingly, Shibusawa reveals how this obsession with race, gender, and maturity reflected America's own anxieties about race relations and equity between the sexes in the postwar world. America's Geisha Ally is an exploration of how belligerents reconcile themselves in the wake of war, but also offers insight into how a new superpower adjusts to its role as the world's preeminent force.
