Bruce O. Solheim has taught the history of the Vietnam War for a dozen years. In his latest book, The Vietnam War Era: A Personal Journey, Solheim, an Army veteran and a history professor at Citrus College in California, has come up with a unique and insightful look at that period. The first three-fourths of the book is an excellent summary of the history of the Vietnam War with enlightening sidebars on many people who were involved in itfrom Gen. Earle Wheeler to Oliver Stone. Solheim completes the book with a riveting account of his personal story, including details of his older brothers Vietnam War experiences and his two Army tours of duty after the Vietnam War.

Godfrey Hodgson - The Myth of American Exceptional ism (2009).jpg

The notion of America as the divinely anointed homeland of freedom, bravery, democracy and economic opportunity, with everything to teach the world and nothing to learn from it, is so entrenched that this perceptive portrait of America the Ordinary seems downright radical. Hodgson (Woodrow Wilson's Right Hand) situates America as an outpost of Europe, always a part (and not always the most advanced part) of an evolving progressive, liberal, capitalist civilization spanning the Atlantic. American history, he contends, has its share of class conflict, bloody and sometimes losing struggles against hierarchy, and institutional dysfunction. Much of its success, he argues, stems from historical and geographical happenstance rather than ideological genius, and its recent performance, in everything from fighting poverty to health care to political corruption, stacks up poorly against other nations'. The author's nuanced, wide-ranging treatment isn't hostile to the United States, but he deplores a new missionary exceptionalism—visible in the confused and delusional U.S. policy in Iraq. Hodgson's thoughtful critique injects a much-needed shot of perspective and common sense into the debate over America's place in the world.

Henry D. Thoreau, Mr. Jeffrey S. Cramer - The Main e Woods, A Fully Annotated Edition (2009).jpg

“On the 31st of August, 1846, I left Concord in Massachusetts for Bangor and the backwoods of Maine”—thus begins The Maine Woods, the evocative story of Thoreau’s journeys through a familiar yet untouched land.

As he explores Mt. Katahdin (an Indian word meaning “highest land”), Lake Chesuncook, the Allagash River, and the East Branch of the Penobscot, Thoreau muses on his own vulnerability and the humility engendered by his solitude in the wilderness. Throughout Thoreau invokes the forest of Maine—the mountains, waterways, fauna, flora, and the people—in his singular style. Echoing Walden, Thoreau’s passionate outcry against the degradation of the environment in The Maine Woods will resonate strongly today.

This fully annotated gift edition of The Maine Woods makes a wonderful companion volume to Walden: A Fully Annotated Edition and I to Myself: An Annotated Selection from the Journal of Henry D. Thoreau.

Shadia B. Drury - The Political Ideas of Leo Strau ss, Updated Edition, With a New Introduction By th e Author (2005).jpg

USA Books1 - Shadia B. Drury - The Political Ideas of Leo Strauss,...d Edition, With a New Introduction By the Author 2005.jpg

Now in paperback, this book explores the political thought of Leo Strauss, a philosopher most noted for playing a key role in neoconservative thought in America. Drury explores Strauss's thought and its role in American politics, exposing what she argues are the elitist, nearly authoritarian strains within it and those who follow it. A polemic against Strauss and his followers, the original edition has won Drury little friendship from the neoconservative camp and this revised edition with a new introduction is sure to continue the controversy among political theorists.

Squadron - Warship 28 - Robert C. Stern - Gato-Cla ss Submarines in action (2004).jpg

The United States Navy was early to adopt submarine technology. The several experimental boats built for the Navy by John Holland in the last years of the nineteenth century are considered by many to have been the first practical submersibles. But whatever lead the U.S. Navy enjoyed over the rest of the world in those early days had long since slipped away by the end of World War I. By 1919, the United States was building submarines that were smaller, slower, less well aimed, and shorter-ranged than the submarines that other combatants had deployed during the war.
As embarrassing as that situation was, it was even more of a concern given the changed strategic situation that emerged after the Great War. The United States was no longer a marginal player on the world stage, and, as a 'great power,' had to be prepared for the possibility that the peace brokered at Versailles would not last very long. There were really only two or, at the most, three nations the U.S. might conceivably face in any future war, and one of those, Great Britain, was a firm ally. Bolshevik Russia was scary, but not a military threat. That left Japan.

Richard Grey - A History of American Literature (2 004).jpg

Review
"Richard Gray's real achievement is somehow to have compressed more than 400 years of thrillingly rich literary history between two covers." Literary Review

"Highly readable, jargon-free, and engaging." American Literary Scholarship

“This book is the first comprehensive, single volume history of American literature since The Columbia Literary History of the United States edited by Elliott Emory and published sixteen years ago. It is a puzzle, given the extraordinary interest in American literature at home and abroad, that so few full histories of American literature have been published. Consider the fact that the Columbia history arrived nearly four decades after R. E. Spiller’s Literary History of the United States. What makes Gray’s book so extraordinary is that it supercedes the Spiller and Emory texts in nearly every respect, and even challenges the supremacy of the titanic (this pun is intentional), multi-volume, still-evolving Cambridge History of American Literature. How Gray managed to so captivatingly capture the depth and breadth of so complex a literature in under a thousand pages is worth considering. […] Richard Gray possesses the most balanced scholarship of the entire range of American literature I ever read. […] This is the first history of American literature fully worthy of the multi-dimensionality of its subject.” Norman Weinstein, Boise State University

USA Books1 - Jonathan D. Sassi - Republic of Righteousness, The Pub...ity of the Post-Revolutionary New England Clergy 2008.jpg

This book examines the debate over the connection between religion and public life in society during the fifty years following the American Revolution. Sassi challenges the conventional wisdom, finding an essential continuity to the period's public Christianity, whereas most previous studies have seen this period as one in which the nation's cultural paradigm shifted from republicanism to liberal individualism. Focusing on the Congregational clergy of New England, he demonstrates that throughout this period there were Americans concerned with their corporate destiny, retaining a commitment to constructing a righteous community and assessing the cosmic meaning of the American experiment.

Paul K. Conkin - Peabody College, From a Frontier Academy to the Frontiers of Teaching and Learning (2002).jpg

USA Books1 - Paul K. Conkin - Peabody College, From a Frontier Acad...cademy to the Frontiers of Teaching and Learning 2002.jpg

Today George Peabody College is a part of Vanderbilt University, as it has been since its merger in 1979. Its prior history was rich and complex. In this book, Paul Conkin, author of the award-winning history of Vanderbilt, Gone with the Ivy, tells the story of Peabody's many lives, of its successes and failures, and of its many colorful leaders and professors.
It all began as a small frontier academy in 1785. The institution that would become Peabody experienced its first reinvention two decades later as it became Cumberland College, and then, in 1826, the University of Nashville. The University maintained an elite undergraduate college until 1850, and, despite the success of its medical school and a military institute, it failed in three subsequent efforts to restart its undergraduate program.
In 1875 the University offered its campus and degree-granting authority to the first normal school in the state of Tennessee, a school funded by the Peabody Education Fund. The Peabody Normal College was the best in the South, and, as such, exerted an enormous influence on education in the region.
A new era began in 1909. The trustees of the Peabody Fund, at its liquidation, provided an eventual $1.5 million to establish a graduate-level George Peabody College for Teachers. It opened for classes in 1914, on its present campus, where it quickly became the premier teachers' college in the South. As was the case with many private, independent institutions, Peabody faced intermittent financial struggles, which finally ended with its union with Vanderbilt. Today Peabody is, by almost any criteria, one of the five or six strongest colleges of education in the United States.

The New Americans - Mitra K. Shavarini - Educating Immigrants, Experiences of Second Generation Iran ians (2004).jpg

USA Books1 - The New Americans - Mitra K. Shavarini - Educating Im...rants, Experiences of Second Generation Iranians 2004.jpg

Iranian immigrants, new to the United States as a result of Iran's 1979 revolution, bring with them a belief in the importance of education. Second-generation Iranians reveal similar educational values to those their parents held in Iran. This study exemplifies one of the intangible facets of migration, the forces that transcend national boundaries and manifest in newly settled lands.
Shavarini also describes the immigrant experience of Iranians in general. Despite being depicted as terrorists, Iranians have been a relatively successful immigrant group. This book highlights the educational achievements of its second-generation while illuminating the internal diversity of Iranians, consisting of at least seven religious and ethnic groups.

Roderick P. Hart, John L. Pauley II - The Politica l Pulpit Revisited (2004).jpg

The Political Pulpit Revisited examines a set of arguments originally made in 1975 about church-state relations in the U.S. Scholars have long wondered how a nation of some two thousand different religious denominations has been able to remain relatively calm about such matters. Controversial issues like abortion rights, war-time pacifism, sanctuary for illegal aliens, clerical abuse of children, non-taxation of church property, and other matters continually roil the political waters. The first edition describes how church and state tensions are worked out symbolically rather than coercively, legally, or economically. The Political Pulpit Revisited updates church/state arguments and then offers reflections by eight distinguished scholars who re-examine the relationship in light of recent events. The result is a fresh look at the American experiment in those relations and what it portends for the U.S. in the years ahead.

Ron Chepesiuk - The War on Drugs, An International Encyclopedia (1999).jpg

The global drug trade is one of the most prominent examples of supply and demand. Despite such counter-measures as the execution of narcotics dealers in China, and the United States' "war on drugs", drug traffickers have always managed to meet the demand and satisfy an ever-growing customer base. This is the story of the world of drugs, from the infamous Opium Wars to the legal availability of drugs in the US during the 20th century, from the unexpected boost given to illicit drugs by Prohibition to the great success of the French Connection. In addition to offering a wealth of little-known facts, the encyclopaedia also covers major dealers, cartels, organizations, smuggling and anti-smuggling strategies, major miscalculations and disasters, drug epidemics, legal restraints, famous incidents and more.

Sylvia Ostry - The Post-Cold War Trading System, W ho's on First (1997).jpg

With the end of the Cold War, the search for a new international and economic order has begun. In this comprehensive account, Sylvia Ostry provides a critical analysis of an international trade system in the throes of rapid and far-reaching change.
With keen historical awareness, Ostry examines the role of key economic power brokers, particularly the United States, in the reconstruction and reconfiguration of an international economy after World War II. She argues that U.S. policy efforts were so successful that they led to an unprecedented renewal of economic growth, living standards, and education levels in postwar Europe and Japan. Ironically, those same policy successes unintentionally fostered the relative decline of U.S. dominance on the world trade scene as the reduction of trade and investment barriers prompted friction and conflict between different kinds of capitalist systems.
Identifying the historical and legal issues key to postwar trade policy, Ostry has commandingly charted our economic course through the last half of this century and, perhaps, into the next.
