In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order. Based on a series of case studies—including the media’s dichotomous treatment of “worthy” versus “unworthy” victims, “legitimizing” and “meaningless” Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the U.S. wars against Indochina—Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media’s behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications. These include the manner in which the media covered the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and subsequent Mexican financial meltdown of 1994-1995, the media’s handling of the protests against the World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund in 1999 and 2000, and the media’s treatment of the chemical industry and its regulation. What emerges from this work is a powerful assessment of how propagandistic the U.S. mass media are, how they systematically fail to live up to their self-image as providers of the kind of information that people need to make sense of the world, and how we can understand their function in a radically new way.

Michael Sullivan - Legal Pragmatism, Community, Ri ghts, and Democracy (2007).jpg

In Legal Pragmatism, Michael Sullivan looks closely at the place of the individual and community in democratic society. After mapping out a brief history of American legal thinking regarding rights, from communitarianism to liberalism, Sullivan gives a rich and nuanced account of how pragmatism worked to resolve conflicts of self-interest and community well-being. Sullivan's view of pragmatism provides a comprehensive framework for understanding democracy, as well as issues such as health care, education, gay marriage, and illegal immigration that will determine its character in the future. Legal Pragmatism is a bold, carefully argued book that presents a unique understanding of contemporary society, law, and politics.

Thomas A. Birkland - Lessons of Disaster, Policy C hange After Catastrophic Events (2007).jpg

Even before the wreckage of a disaster is cleared, one question is foremost in the minds of the public: "What can be done to prevent this from happening again?" Today, news media and policymakers often invoke the "lessons of September 11" and the "lessons of Hurricane Katrina." Certainly, these unexpected events heightened awareness about problems that might have contributed to or worsened the disasters, particularly about gaps in preparation. Inquiries and investigations are made that claim that "lessons" were "learned" from a disaster, leading us to assume that we will be more ready the next time a similar threat looms, and that our government will put in place measures to protect us. In "Lessons of Disaster", Thomas Birkland takes a critical look at this assumption. We know that disasters play a role in setting policy agendas - in getting policymakers to think about problems - but does our government always take the next step and enact new legislation or regulations? To determine when and how a catastrophic event serves as a catalyst for true policy change, the author examines four categories of disasters: aviation security, homeland security, earthquakes, and hurricanes. He explores lessons learned from each, focusing on three types of policy change: change in the larger social construction of the issues surrounding the disaster; instrumental change, in which laws and regulations are made; and political change, in which alliances are created and shifted. Birkland argues that the type of disaster affects the types of lessons learned from it, and that certain conditions are necessary to translate awareness into new policy, including media attention, salience for a large portion of the public, the existence of advocacy groups for the issue, and the preexistence of policy ideas that can be drawn upon. This timely study concludes with a discussion of the interplay of multiple disasters, focusing on the initial government response to Hurricane Katrina and the negative effect the September 11 catastrophe seems to have had on reaction to that tragedy.

Joel Ellis, M.D. Holloway, Amanda Neill - A Dictio nary of Common Wildflowers of Texas & the Southern Great Plains (2005).jpg

USA Books1 - Joel Ellis, M.D. Holloway, Amanda Neill - A Dictionar... Wildflowers of Texas the Southern Great Plains 2005.jpg

Castilleja coccinea, Indian Paintbrush. Scientific name: Castilleja, for Domingo Castillejo (fl. 1781), a Spanis botanist plus coccinea, Latin for scarlet. Reference is to the color of the flowers. Common name: Indian Paintbrush, from the appearance of the flowers that resemble a brush dipped in paint. American Indians obtained dye from this plant. This typical entry from "A Dictionary of Common Wildflowers of Texas and the Southern Great Plains" illustrates the synthesis the book provides between scientific and common names of the plants. Intended as a companion to field guides of common flowers in the region, this dictionary offers an opportunity to reference both names. The scientific or binomial name (the genus and species) is translated from its Latin form and its original language - Latin, Greek, European, Oriental, American Indian, even a personal name - is identified. The common names for flowers in this region are usually of English or Mexican Spanis origin, although many come from several American Indian languages. The common names of some plants, like Indian Paintbrush, are familiar to most residents of Texas and the Southern Plains. Others such as Tall Joe Pie-Weed, Clammyweed, or Sensitive Pea may come as a surprise. Dr. Holloway explains the reason for the common name in many cases. Sensitive Pea, for instance, is named sensitive because the leaves curl when touched and pea because it produces a pod. Thoroughly researched and current with contemporary botanical terms, this is a book that professionals will keep in their personal libraries as a reference tool and native plant enthusiasts will keep in their cars for identifying flora along the road.

Dutchess County, New York, Drive Tour Guide (2004).jpg

Dutchess County was formed in 1683 as one of the original counties of New York, in a bold move by English Colonial Governor Thomas Dongan to cut off New England expansion and confirm control of the Northeast by the Stuart monarchy. Our name honors Maria Beatrice D’Este, the Dutchess (old spelling) of York. Her husband James, the Duke, as proprietor and future King, named everything he controlled for relatives and friends. The sole inhabitants then were the Wappinger Indians.

John Minkes, Leonard Minkes - Corporate and White Collar Crime (2008).jpg

"This timely collection contains contemporary case studies and critical analyses by leading writers in the study of white collar corporate crime. It makes an invaluable contribution to the 'criminology of the corporation'."
-Hazel Croall, Glasgow Caledonian University, U.K.

Crime and unethical behavior in business corporations and public bodies is a growing area of study that is forming part of many criminology courses. This ground-breaking book from key scholars in Criminology and Management Studies provides a truly up to date overview of debates on corporate and white collar crime. Corporate and White Collar Crime will encourage students to develop a broad understanding of the topic. It further supports the learning experience by drawing upon interdisciplinary and international perspectives. Case studies and illustrative material are incorporated throughout, to help the reader to link theories and ideas with practical examples.

Intended Audience: Aimed primarily at undergraduate and postgraduate students in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Business and Management Studies, the book will cross-over into many other disciplines including Law and Social Policy.

"This is an innovative and multidisciplinary analysis of corporate and white collar crime that is both theoretically and empirically rich. The text serves as a poignant reminder why research involving the powerful must be a central part of criminological inquiry and why this book is essential reading."
-Reece Walters, The Open University, U.K.

"Again and again, pension funds are pillaged, investors fleeced, commuters killed, workers maimed, and communities poisoned. Why is it that so few of these acts are defined as crimes, and why is it that, even when they are, prosecution is so rarely effective? Corporate Crime and White Collar Crime addresses these very questions through its rigorous, well-developed analysis and its wide ranging empirical focus - on Europe, North America, Asia and beyond. The book can help all of us to re-examine our understanding of the nature of crime and of criminals, and to reassess the costs as well as the benefits of our current economic, political and social order."

USA Books1 - John Authers, Mohamed A. El-Erian - The Fearful Rise ...Meltdowns, and How To Prevent Them in the Future 2010.jpg

“This enjoyable, fast-moving book is concise, relevant, and perceptive. My bottom line is a simple one: This book should be read by all those interested in the way markets operate, be they investors, analysts, or policy makers.”

From the Foreword by Mohamed A. El-Erian, CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO, and author of When Markets Collide

“This book is a must-read for anyone concerned about how we can avoid recurring debt-induced busts in the years ahead, or anyone who wonders how to invest if (when!) the crisis returns. Authers’ insights on the global financial crisis are profound.”

Robert D. Arnott, Chairman, Research Affiliates, LLC, and author of The Fundamental Index: A Better Way to Invest

“This book illustrates the dangers to investors who fail to recognize that global asset markets have become more synchronized over time. In a crowded field of works on the financial crisis, Authers’ work is unique in both its insight and style.”

Robert R. Johnson, Ph.D., CFA, Senior Managing Director of the CFA Institute

“John Authers has combined his journalistically honed FT skills with great insights. Serious investors and policymakers should read this book.”

David R. Kotok, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Cumberland Advisors

“John masterfully drives a stake through the myth of global economic decoupling one chapter and example at a time. A must-read in today’s economy.”

Vitaliy Katsenelson, Director of Research at Investment Management Associates, Inc, author of Active Value Investing: Making Money in Range-Bound Markets

Are we barreling toward another massive global financial catastrophe?

How can so many bubbles form all at once? Why are so many “disconnected” markets now capable of collapsing in unison? In this remarkably readable book, award-winning Financial Times columnist John Authers takes on these critical questions and offers deeply sobering answers.

Authers reveals how the first truly global super bubble was inflated–and might now be inflating again. He illuminates the multiple roots of repeated financial crises: a massive shift in investing power from individuals to big institutions; the migration of key decisions from banks to capital markets; the wholesale financialization of many asset classes; and fundamental failures of both theory and policy.

The Fearful Rise of Markets presents a truly global view, avoiding oversimplifications and ideology as it outlines how we got here and where we stand. Even more valuable, it offers realistic solutions–for decision-makers who want to prevent disaster and investors who want to survive it.

• The herd grows ever larger–and more dangerous
How institutional investing, indexing, and efficient markets theory promote herding

• Cheap money and irrational exuberance
Super fuel for super bubbles

• Too big to fail: the whole story of moral hazard
Banks, hedge funds, and beyond

• Danger signs of the next bubble
Forex, equity, credit, and commodity markets move once more in alignment

Robert L. Bradley Jr - Capitalism at Work, Busines s, Government and Energy (2008).jpg

Capitalism took the blame for Enron. Yet Enron was anything but a free-market enterprise, and company-architect Ken Lay was hardly a principled capitalist. On the contrary, Enron was a politically dependent company and, in the end, a grotesque outcome of America s modern mixed economy.
That is the central finding of Robert L. Bradley s Capitalism at Work: The blame for Enron rests squarely with political capitalism - a system in which business interests routinely obtain, and employ government intervention for their own interests at the expense of consumers, taxpayers, and competitors. Although Ken Lay professed allegiance to free markets, he was in fact a consummate politician. Only by manipulating the levers of government was Enron transformed from a $3 billion natural gas company to a $100 billion chimera, one that went from seventh place on the Fortune 500 list to bankruptcy.
But Capitalism at Work goes beyond unmasking Enron s sophisticated foray into political capitalism. Employing the timeless insights of Adam Smith, Samuel Smiles, and Ayn Rand, among others, Bradley shows how fashionable anti-capitalist doctrines set the stage for the ultimate business debacle. Those errant theories, like Enron itself, elevated form over substance, ignored legitimate criticism, and bypassed midcourse correction. Political capitalism was thus more than the handiwork of profit-hungry businessmen and power-hungry politicians. It was a legacy of failed scholarship.
Capitalism at Work s penetrating, multidisciplinary explanation of the demise of Enron breaks new ground regarding business history, business ethics, business best practices, and public policies toward business.
As Bradley concludes: The fundamental lesson from Enron is this: Capitalism did not fail. The mixed economy failed. The capitalist worldview is stronger, not weaker, post-Enron. But there is another, deeper lesson that explains Enron and the mistakes of the intellectual mainstream before, during, and after Enron s active life. It is that arrogant behavior, or what in the Enron vernacular is called the smartest-guys-in-the-room problem, can strike anytime and anywhere. Whether in business or academia or a profession or association conceit, deceit, and dogmatism are the bane of personal, intellectual, and organizational success.
