This book critically examines the weaknesses of U.S. intelligence led by the Central Intelligence Agency in informing presidential decision-making on issues of war and peace. It evaluates the CIA's strategic intelligence performance during the Cold War and post-Cold War periods as a foundation for examining the root causes of intelligence failures surrounding the September 11th attacks and assessments of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs in the run up to the Iraq war. Intelligence expert Richard L. Russell probes the roots causes of these failures which lie in the CIA's poor human intelligence collection and analysis practices. Russell argues that none of the post-9/11 intelligence reforms have squarely addressed these root causes of strategic intelligence failure and it recommends measures for redressing these dangerous vulnerabilities in American security.

Laird Bergad - The Comparative Histories of Slaver y in Brazil, Cuba, and the United States (2007).jpg

This book is an introductory history of racial slavery in the Americas. Brazil and Cuba were among the first colonial societies to establish slavery in the early sixteenth century. Approximately a century later British colonial Virginia was founded, and slavery became an integral part of local culture and society. In all three nations, slavery spread to nearly every region, and in many areas it was the principal labor system utilized by rural and urban elites. This is the first work that systemically surveys slavery in the three nations from comparative perspectives. Chapters focus on slave narratives, demography, economy, culture, resistance and rebellions, and the causes of abolition.

Kenneth Jolly - Black Liberation in the Midwest, T he Struggle in St. Louis, Missouri, 1964-1970 (200 6).jpg

This book offers a response to the inadequate examination of the Midwest in Civil Rights Movement scholarship - scholarship that continues to ignore the city of St. Louis and the Black liberation struggle that took place there. Jolly examines this local movement and organizations such as the Black Liberators, Mid-City Congress, Jeff Vander Lou Community Action Group, DuBois Club, CORE, Zulu 1200s, and the Nation of Islam to illuminate the larger Black liberation struggle in the Midwest in the mid- and late 1960s. Furthermore, this work details the larger atmosphere and conditions in St. Louis, Missouri and the Midwest from which this local movement developed and operated.
This work raises important questions about periodizing and locating Black liberation and Black Nationalism. As racial oppression in the United States was equated with neo-colonialism and internal-colonialism, this discussion reveals the global nature of white supremacy, race and class oppression and exploitation, as well as the material and ideological relationship between local and transnational liberation movements.

USA Books1 - Concord - Firepower Pictorial Special 2008 - Greg Stew...aining Center, Ultimate in Land Warfare Training 1992.jpg

In 1981, the U.S. Army opened the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California.
Due to the increased range, speed and lethality of modern weapons systems, training areas once considered adequate for entire Army divisions are nov-y barely sufficient to accommodate brigade or even battalion-sized units.
At the NTC. in an area of almost 1 ,000 square miles of open desert terrain, the U.S. Army has constructed the world's most sophisticated and realistic battlefield. The NTC has facilities to conduct both day and night, large scale combined arms training for brigades and regiments. It conducts 1 A training cycles annually for brigade-sized elements from armored and mechanized divisions throughout the continental United States.

Don Laine, Barbara Laine and Eric Peterson - Fromm er's Colorado, 9th Edition (2007).jpg

The old and the new, the rustic and the sophisticated, the wild and the refined - all of these experiences exist practically side by side in Colorado, amid what is arguably the most breathtaking mountain scenery in America.
Colorado truly comes alive for those who venture outdoors—among the towering Rocky Mountains, the western canyons, or the broad eastern plains. Atop Pikes Peak, you’ll see what inspired Katharine Lee Bates to pen the lyrics to “America the Beautiful.”
Climb on a horse or mountain bike, take a hike or raft trip—or simply sit back and gaze at the mountains. Whatever you do, though, don’t stay indoors. Enos Mills, an early-20th-century environmentalist and one of the driving forces behind the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park, said that knowledge of nature is the basis of wisdom. For many, that’s the essence of Colorado.

Meticulously researched by an experienced husband-and-wife team, Frommer's Colorado offers complete coverage of the whole state. You'll discover the best places to buy Western wear and authentic Western art; the top restaurants, from downhome steakhouses to trendy brewpubs; and the best skiing, hiking, biking, and fishing. All the top sights are here: Pike's Peak, the Garden of the Gods, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Coors Brewing Company, the U.S. Mint, and a host of gorgeous trails and canyons. You'll find accommodations to suit every taste and budget, plus nightlife, a complete shopper's guide, and a host of detailed, accurate maps.

Robert Dallek - Franklin D. Roosevelt and American Foreign Policy, 1932-1945, With a New Afterword ( 1995).jpg

Since the original publication of this classic book in 1979, Roosevelt's foreign policy has come under attack on three main points: Was Roosevelt responsible for the confrontation with Japan that led to the attack at Pearl Harbor? Did Roosevelt "give away" Eastern Europe to Stalin and the U.S.S.R. at Yalta? And, most significantly, did Roosevelt abandon Europe's Jews to the Holocaust, making no direct effort to aid them? In a new Afterword to his definitive history, Dallek vigorously and brilliantly defends Roosevelt's policy. He emphasizes how Roosevelt operated as a master politician in maintaining a national consensus for his foreign policy throughout his presidency and how he brilliantly achieved his policy and military goals.

Shannon H. Wilson - Berea College, An Illustrated History (2006).jpg

Berea College's spiritual motto, "God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth," has shaped the institution's unique culture and programs since its founding in 1855. Founder John G. Fee, an ardent abolitionist, held fast to the radical vision of a college and a community committed to interracial education, to the Appalachian region, and to the equality of women and men hailing from all "nations and climes." A significant distinction in the Berea mission is that rather than following the typical tuition-based model, the college developed a tuition-free work program so that its students could take advantage of a private liberal arts education otherwise unaffordable to them.
Using primary sources, recent scholarship, and powerful photographs, Shannon H. Wilson charts the fascinating history and development of one of Kentucky's most distinguished institutions of higher learning.

Concord - Firepower Pictorials Special 1027 - Mic hael Green, Greg Stewart - M60 Tank (1960).jpg

The U.S. Army's Ml Abrams Main Baffle Tank has dominated the civilian press and the military trade journals since the first production model rolled off the assembly line in February. 1980, with untold numbers of stories about its development, fielding, and problems both real and imagined.
Unfortunately, forgotten by many is the fact that the M60 family of tanks will still make up over fifty percent of the U.S. Army's inventory of main battle tanks until the late 1990s.
With the recent thaw in cold war tensions and the announced defense cutbacks by the U.S. Army, use of the M60 tank could last Into the 21st Century both with the U.S. tank fleet and foreign armies.
The history of the M60 tank begins in 1959 when a modified version of the M48A2 Pafton was introduced with a new front hull, a diesel engine, and a 105mm gun. To highlight the improvement over the earlier vehicle, it was redesignated as the 105mm gun tank M60. The M60 series of tanks had, since the beginning of Its production run in early 1960, been considered to be only an interim vehicle intended to serve the U.S. Army until the ideal tank could be designed and built. But, 15,000 tanks later, the M60 tank is still in service around the world. Numerous development programs helped to extend the useful life of the tank and kept it viable as a combat vehicle. Fortunately, the basic design was sound and easily accommodated the many modifications added to it over the years.
The last production version of the M60 tank was the M60A3, which was first introduced into US Army service In 1978.
The external appearance of the M60A3 tank is not very different from the M60A1 tank model. Only the thermal shroud on the gun tube, the wind sensor on top of the turret bustle, and the laser safety shield on the right side rangefinder blister distinguish it as an A3 model.
Unique features of the A3 are its Ml tank type fire control system, which include a laser rangefinder. solid state electronic computer, and a tank thermal sight (TTS for short).
The (TTS) provides a large improvement over image intensification sights as tound on earlier models of the M60 tank. It employs thermal technology so that its detection range is not dependent on moon or starlight. It "sees" as well in total darkness as it does in daylight and can detect targets through smoke, fog, and dust. It can also penetrate camouflage because it senses the heat of objects hidden by natural or manmade materials.

Katherine S. Newman, Elisabeth S. Jacobs - Who Car es, Public Ambivalence and Government Activism fro m the New Deal to the Second Gilded Age (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - Katherine S. Newman, Elisabeth S. Jacobs - Who Cares, ...ivism from the New Deal to the Second Gilded Age 2010.jpg

Americans like to think that they look after their own, especially in times of hardship. Particularly for the Great Depression and the Great Society eras, the collective memory is one of solidarity and compassion for the less fortunate. Who Cares? challenges this story by examining opinion polls and letters to presidents from average citizens. This evidence, some of it little known, reveals a much darker, more impatient attitude toward the poor, the unemployed, and the dispossessed during the 1930s and 1960s. Katherine Newman and Elisabeth Jacobs show that some of the social policies that Americans take for granted today suffered from declining public support just a few years after their inception. Yet Americans have been equally unenthusiastic about efforts to dismantle social programs once they are well established. Again contrary to popular belief, conservative Republicans had little public support in the 1980s and 1990s for their efforts to unravel the progressive heritage of the New Deal and the Great Society. Whether creating or rolling back such programs, leaders like Roosevelt, Johnson, Nixon, and Reagan often found themselves working against public opposition, and they left lasting legacies only by persevering despite it.

Timely and surprising, Who Cares? demonstrates not that Americans are callous but that they are frequently ambivalent about public support for the poor. It also suggests that presidential leadership requires bold action, regardless of opinion polls.

Bill O'Reilly - The No-Spin Zone, Confrontations w ith the Powerful and Famous in America (2001).jpg

The audience of Fox's top-rated cable news talk show The O'Reilly Factor and of the bestselling book by the same name know that this explosive anchor can be articulate, bombastic, scornful, witty, iconoclastic, passionate, persuasive and sarcastic ("Can you feel Gary Condit's pain?"). When conducting interviews, O'Reilly, a two-time Emmy winner with 25 years reporting experience, delivers tough questions and corrosive counterpoints. In the No-Spin Zone (originally conceived for his TV show), "lies are rejected and equivocations are mocked." "All I ask is for powerful people to respond honestly to the questions, and if they can't, explain why," says O'Reilly. Here he excerpts past interviews with various memorable opponents James Carville (on Bill Clinton), Dr. Laura (on working mothers), former surgeon general Dr. Joycelyn Elders (on sex education), Puff Daddy (on rap), Susan Sarandon (on police brutality), Al Sharpton (on boycotts) and insightfully introduces each, mulling over the issue or providing background. To cover TV sleaze and violence, he splices interviews (Steve Allen, Howdy Doody's Buffalo Bob) into his own terse text. The same treatment is applied to the death penalty (George W. Bush, Bianca Jagger), taxes (Mario Cuomo, GAO head David Walker) and other issues. He saves the best for last Dan Rather on news stories the media overlooks, prefaced by O'Reilly's own memories of becoming "a 'dead man walking' at CBS News." (On-sale: Oct. 16) Forecast: O'Reilly's TV ratings continue to rise, and the show's "No-Spin Zone" title will grab book buyers. With simultaneous CD and large-print editions, and an e-book due in November, total sales should be astronomical.

Cleo Paskal - Global Warring, How Environmental, E conomic, and Political Crises Will Redraw the Worl d Map (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - Cleo Paskal - Global Warring, How Environmental, Econo..., and Political Crises Will Redraw the World Map 2010.jpg

In a perfect storm, the environment, the global economic system and geopolitics are all undergoing rapid, uncontrolled change. In the same way that the climate is in a state of flux, exhibiting erratic behavior before settling into a new norm, in the wake of the global economic crisis, many of the assumptions about the Western economic system have been destroyed, which leads to some troubling questions:

How vulnerable is the United States to more devastating hurricanes like Katrina?

What will the opening of the Arctic mean for Russian access into North American waters?

Will China's lack of clean, fresh water undermine its global ambitions?

Will India's increasingly erratic monsoon affect its economic growth?

Global Warring takes a hard look at these questions. Journalist and analyst Cleo Paskal identifies problem areas that are most likely to start wars, destroy economies and create failed states. Examining the most likely environmental change scenarios, she illuminates the ways in which they could radically alter human existence. A fascinating tour through our uncertain future, Global Warring also offers a controversial new way forward for the global economy and the worldwide environmental crisis.
