The Civil WAR You Never Knew...
Behind the bloody battles, strategic marches, and decorated generals lie more than 100 intensely personal, true stories you haven't heard before. In Best Little Stories from the Civil War, soldiers describe their first experiences in battle, women observe the advances and retreats of armies, spies recount their methods, and leaders reveal the reasoning behind many of their public actions. Fascinating characters come to life, including:
Former U.S. Senator Robert Toombs of Georgia, who warned the Confederate cabinet not to fall for Lincoln's trap by firing on reinforcements, thereby allowing Lincoln to claim the South had fired the first shots of the war at Fort Sumter.
Brig. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut, who disbanded the 13th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery, scattered its men, gave its guns to other units, and ordered its officers home, accusing all of cowardly performance in battle.
Thomas N. Conrad, a Confederate spy operating in Washington, who warned Richmond of both the looming Federal Peninsula campaign in the spring of 1863 and the attack at Fredericksburg later that year.
Private Franklin Thomson of Michigan, born as Sarah Emma Edmonds, who fought in uniform for the Union during the war and later was the only female member of the postwar Union Grand Army of the Republic.

Eric Peltz - Speed and Power, Toward an Expedition ary Army (2003).jpg

Using a case study based on the Army's new Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the authors explore how the Army might improve its ability to contribute to prompt, global power projection, that is, strategically responsive early-entry forces for time-critical events. The authors examine options to reach a dual goal: to initiate deployment of the right force capabilities, and then get those capabilities where they need to be as quickly as possible.

Melvin Oliver, Thomas Shapiro - Black Wealth-White Wealth, A New Perspective on Racial Inequality 2E (2006).jpg

USA Books1 - Melvin Oliver, Thomas Shapiro - Black Wealth-White We...ealth, A New Perspective on Racial Inequality 2E 2006.jpg

The award-winning Black Wealth / White Wealth offers a powerful portrait of racial inequality based on an analysis of private wealth. Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiros' groundbreaking research analyzes wealth -total assets and debts rather than income alone -to uncover deep and persistent racial inequality in America, and they show how public policies have failed to redress the problem.
First published in 1995, Black Wealth / White Wealth is considered a classic exploration of race and inequality. It provided, for the first time, systematic empirical evidence that explained the racial inequality gap between blacks and whites. The Tenth Anniversary edition contains two entirely new and substantive chapters. These chapters look at the continuing issues of wealth and inequality in America and the new policies that have been launched in the past ten years. Some have been progressive while others only recreate inequality -for example the proposal to eliminate the estate tax.
Compelling and also informative, Black Wealth / White Wealth is not just pioneering research. It is also a powerful counterpoint to arguments against affirmative action and a direct challenge to current social welfare policies that are tilted towards the wealthy.

USA Books1 - Elizabeth Mancke - The Fault Lines of Empire, Politica...tion in Massachusetts and Nova Scotia, 1760-1830 2004.jpg

This work presents a comparative history whose broad argument is that the differences in the political cultures of Canada and the United States have their origins in changes in the governance of the British Empire in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, rather than from changes initiated at the time of the American Revolution. In an analysis of two towns, one in Nova Scotia and one in Maine, this book addresses two large historical questions. One, why have the attitudes of Americans and Canadians about the appropriate role and function of governments differed significantly, despite the similarity of being North American liberal societies and formerly parts of the British Empire? And two, how did the consolidation of power within Britain affect the basic organization of people's lives in the colonies?

David Harvey - The Enigma of Capital (2010).jpg

Taking a long view of the current economic crisis, eminent academic David Harvey explains how capitalism came to dominate the world and why it resulted in the current financial crisis. For three centuries, the capitalist system has shaped western society, informed its rulers, and conditioned the lives of its people. Using his unrivalled knowledge of the subject, Harvey lays bare the follies of the international financial system, looking closely at the nature of capitalism, how it works and why sometimes it doesn't. He examines the vast flows of money that surge round the world in daily volumes well in excess of the sum of all its economies. He looks at the cycles of boom and bust in the world's housing and stock markets and shows that periodic episodes of meltdown are not only inevitable in the capitalist system but essential to its survival. The essence of capitalism is its amorality and lawlessness and to talk of a regulated, ethical capitalism is to make an error of reasoning of the most fundamental kind. "The Enigma of Capital" considers how crises of the current sort can best be contained within the constraints of capitalism, and makes the case for a social order that would allow us to live within a system that really could be responsible, just, and humane.

David E. Campbell - A Matter of Faith, Religion in the 2004 Presidential Election (2007).jpg

"Moral values" dominated the postelection headlines in 2004. Analysts pointed to exit polls, strong turnout among evangelicals, and controversy over gay marriage as evidence that the election had been decided along religious lines. But other experts were quick to dispute this claim, arguing that views on more traditional issues such as the economy and the war in Iraq had carried the day. A Matter of Faith goes beyond the headlines to assess the role religion played in the 2004 election and explore its significance for future contests. The contributors evaluate the claim that moral values were decisive by examining the religious affiliations of ordinary voters and party elites. They also analyze the strategies used to mobilize religious conservatives, such as micro-targeting, and they examine the voting behavior of a broad range of groups, including evangelicals, African Americans, and the understudied religious left. This rich perspective on faith and politics is essential reading on a critical aspect of American politics. Contributors: John C. Green (University of Akron and Pew Forum on Religion in Public Life), James L. Guth (Furman University), D. Sunshine Hillygus (Harvard University), Laura S. Hussey (University of Baltimore), John S. Jackson (Southern Illinois University, emeritus), Scot Keeter (Pew Research Center for the People and the Press), Lyman A. Kellstedt (Wheaton College, emeritus), Geoffrey C. Anita Patterson - Race, American Literature and Tr ansnational Modernisms (2008).jpg

Modernist poetry crosses racial and national boundaries. The emergence of poetic modernism in the Americas was profoundly shaped by transatlantic contexts of empire-building and migration. In this ambitious book, Anita Patterson examines cross-currents of influence among a range of American, African American and Caribbean authors. Works by Whitman, Poe, Eliot, Pound and their avant-garde contemporaries served as a heritage for black poets in the US and elsewhere in the New World. In tracing these connections, Patterson argues for a renewed focus on intercultural and transnational dialogue in modernist studies. This bold and imaginative work of transnational literary and historical criticism sets canonical American figures in fascinating new contexts and opens up new readings of Langston Hughes, Derek Walcott, and Aime Cesaire. This book will be of interest to scholars of American and African American literature, modernism, postcolonial studies, and Caribbean literature.

Alexander Zaitchik - Common Nonsense, Glenn Beck a nd the Triumph of Ignorance (2010).jpg

Who is this guy and why are people listening? Forget Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hannity—Glenn Beck is the Right’s new media darling and the unofficial leader of the conservative grassroots. Lampooned by the Left and Lionized by the far Right, his bluster-and-tears brand of political commentary has commandeered attention on both sides of the aisle.

Glenn Beck has emerged over the last decade as a unique and bizarre conservative icon for the new century. He encourages his listeners to embrace a cynical paranoia that slides easily into a fantasyland filled with enemies that do not exist and solutions that are incoherent, at best. Since the election of President Barack Obama, Beck’s bombastic, conspiratorial, and often viciously personal approach to political combat has made him one of the most controversial figures in the history of American broadcasting.

In Common Nonsense, investigative reporter Alexander Zaitchik explores Beck's strange brew of ratings lust, boundless ego, conspiratorial hard-right politics, and gimmicky morning-radio entertainment chops.

* Separates the facts from the fiction, following Beck from his troubled childhood to his recent rise to the top of the conservative media heap
* Zaitchik's recent three-part series in Salon caused so much buzz, Beck felt the need to attack it on his show
* Based on Zaitchik's interviews with former Beck coworkers and review of countless Beck writings and television and radio shows
* Explains why Beck is always crying, why he has so many conservative enemies, why he's driven by conspiracy theories, and why he's dangerous to the health of the republic
* A contributing writer to Alternet, Zaitchik's reporting has appeared in the New Republic, the Nation, Salon, Wired, Reason, and the Believer

Beck, a perverse and high-impact media spectacle, has emerged as a leader in a conservative protest movement that raises troubling questions about the future of American politics.

Take this fully illustrated guide to the US and British Virgin Islands along for the perfect island getaway.

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea.
In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.
