The planning that allowed for the successful amphibious landings at the end of World War II actually began during the 1880s as the Marine Corps sought to define its role in the new Steel Navy. Officers braved skepticism, indifference and outright opposition to develop an amphibious warfare doctrine, with each service contributing. From the 1898 war with Spain through the disastrous 1915 Australian landing to the successful World War II assaults in the Pacific and northwest France, this chronological history explores the successes and failures pivotal to the concept of amphibious warfare through the lives and careers of fourteen officers instrumental to its development. Profiles include General George S. Patton, Jr.; Rear Admiral Walter C. Ansel, USN; Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, USMC; Admiral William Sims, USN; and Colonel Robert W. Huntington, USMC.

Samuel Truett - Fugitive Landscapes, The Forgotten History of the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands (2006).jpg

Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mexicans and Americans joined together to transform the U.S.–Mexico borderlands into a crossroads of modern economic development. This book reveals the forgotten story of their ambitious dreams and their ultimate failure to control this fugitive terrain.
Focusing on a mining region that spilled across the Arizona–Sonora border, this book shows how entrepreneurs, corporations, and statesmen tried to domesticate nature and society within a transnational context. Efforts to tame a “wild” frontier were stymied by labor struggles, social conflict, and revolution. Fugitive Landscapes explores the making and unmaking of the U.S.–Mexico border, telling how ordinary people resisted the domination of empires, nations, and corporations to shape transnational history on their own terms. By moving beyond traditional national narratives, it offers new lessons for our own border-crossing age.

Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi - The Worlds of Herman Kahn , The Intuitive Science of Thermonuclear War (2005 ).jpg

Herman Kahn was the only nuclear strategist in America who might have made a living as a standup comedian. Indeed, galumphing around stages across the country, joking his way through one grotesque thermonuclear scenario after another, he came frighteningly close. In telling the story of Herman Kahn, whose 1960 book On Thermonuclear War catapulted him into celebrity, Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi captures an era that is still very much with us--a time whose innocence, gruesome nuclear humor, and outrageous but deadly serious visions of annihilation have their echoes in the "known unknowns and unknown unknowns" that guide policymakers in our own embattled world.
Portraying a life that combined aspects of Lenny Bruce, Hitchcock, and Kubrick, Ghamari-Tabrizi presents not one Herman Kahn, but many--one who spoke the suffocatingly dry argot of the nuclear experts, another whose buffoonery conveyed the ingenious absurdity of it all, and countless others who capered before the public, ambiguous, baffling, always open to interpretation. This, then, is a story of one thoroughly strange and captivating man as well as a cultural history of our moment. In Herman Kahn's world is a critical lesson about how Cold War analysts learned to fill in the ciphers of strategic uncertainty, and thus how we as a nation learned to live with the peculiarly inventive quality of strategy, in which uncertainty generates extravagant threat scenarios.
Revealing the metaphysical behind the dryly deliberate, apparently practical discussion of nuclear strategy, this book depicts the creation of a world where clever men fashion Something out of Nothing--and establishes Herman Kahn as our first virtuoso of the unknown unknowns.

Bloom's Modern Critical Views - Harold Bloom - Ten nessee Williams (2007).jpg

Tennessee Williams is recognized as one of America's greatest dramatists, and as an innovator of post-World War II theater. He looked for a mechanism for portraying the truth in theater at a time when traditional approaches no longer worked. Bold with form as well as subject matter, Williams confronted audiences with what had been taboo topics - sexuality, societal constraints, alcoholism, and brutality. His notable contributions to literature include "The Glass Menagerie", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", and "A Streetcar Named Desire". This newly updated volume from the "Bloom's Modern Critical Views" series features essays that examine the life and legacy of this formidable storyteller, and serves as an excellent guide for students curious to learn how Williams innovatively presented his daring topics within a highly lyrical context.

Stephen D. Cohen - An Ocean Apart, Explaining Thre e Decades of U.S.-Japanese Trade Frictions (1998).jpg

Closing a critical gap in the literature examining the strained economic relationship between the U.S. and Japan, this book synthesizes the economic, political, historical, and cultural factors that have led these two nations, both practitioners of capitalism, along quite different paths in search of different goals. Taking an objective, multidisciplinary approach, the author argues that there is no single explanation for Japan's domestic economic or foreign trade successes. Rather, he explains, a systemic mismatch in the corporate strategy, economic policies, and attitudes of the U.S. and Japan created and is perpetuating three decades of bilateral economic frictions and disequilibria. The main conclusion the author draws is that as long as both the U.S. and Japan deal more with symptoms than causes, bilateral problems will persist.

Andrew Wiest, Jim Webb - Vietnam's Forgotten Army, Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN (2007).jpg

Vietnam’s Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN chronicles the lives of Pham Van Dinh and Tran Ngoc Hue, two of the brightest young stars in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Both men fought with valor in a war that seemed to have no end, exemplifying ARVN bravery and determination that is largely forgotten or ignored in the West. However, while Hue fought until he was captured by the North Vietnamese Army and then endured thirteen years of captivity, Dinh surrendered and defected to the enemy, for whom he served as a teacher in the reeducation of his former ARVN comrades.
An understanding of how two lives that were so similar diverged so dramatically pres a lens through which to understand the ARVN and South Vietnam’s complex relationship with Americas government and military. The lives of Dinh and Hue reflect the ARVNs battlefield successes, from the recapture of the Citadel in Hue City in the Tet Offensive of 1968, to Dinhs unheralded role in the seizure of Hamburger Hill a year later. However, their careers expose an ARVN that was over-politicized, tactically flawed, and dependent on American logistical and firepower support. Marginalized within an American war, ARVN faced a grim fate as U.S. forces began to exit the conflict. As the structure of the ARVN/U.S. alliance unraveled, Dinh and Hue were left alone to make the most difficult decisions of their lives.
Andrew Wiest weaves historical analysis with a compelling narrative, culled from extensive interviews with Dinh, Hue, and other key figures. Once both military superstars, Dinh is viewed by a traitor by many within the South Vietnamese community, while Hue, an expatriate living in northern Virginia, is seen as a hero who never let go of his ideals. Their experiences and legacies mirror that of the ARVNs rise and fall as well as the tragic history of South Vietnam.

Thomas F. O'Brien - Making the Americas, The Unite d States and Latin America from the Age of Revolut ions to the Era of Globalization (2007).jpg

USA Books1 - Thomas F. OBrien - Making the Americas, The United Sta...e Age of Revolutions to the Era of Globalization 2007.jpg

Americans' belief in their economic, political, and cultural superiority launched them on a mission to transform Latin America that has evolved into a global process of Americanization. From corporate and philanthropic initiatives to military interventions, Americans motivated by self-interest and idealism sought to reshape Latin America and gave birth to the American driven process of globalization.
Synthesizing a broad range of international relations scholarship, including perspectives from gender, race, and cultural studies, O'Brien offers a sweeping history of the Americas that ranges from the adventures of eighteenth-century whaling men to the contemporary struggle over globalization. As a part of this study, the author explains how the responses of Latin Americans to Americanization have varied from the vehement rejection of U.S. economic dominance to embracing as well as reconfiguring the icons of American consumer culture.
O'Brien's goal is to pre readers with a nuanced understanding of how the people of the Americas have shaped their own history, and influenced the development of U.S. economic, strategic, and cultural power in the world today.

After his expulsion from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1861, Cushing managed to get an appointment as a master's mate on one of the warships of a blockading squadron. Cushing's daring and exceptional performance in battle led to a spectacular rise in rank, responsibility, and reputation. His military career culminated in his torpedoing of the Confederate ironclad Albemarle on the Roanoke River in 1864, an operation he executed under heavy enemy fire. This new and fully annotated edition of Cushing's memoir, originally written in 1867/1868, conveys the excitement and drama of a truly extraordinary Civil War naval career.

Costume and Fashion Source Books - Anne McEvoy - T he 1920s and 1930s (2009).jpg

Although the 1920s and 1930s are often lumped together as the period “between the wars,” the two decades were quite different in character and styles of dress varied greatly.
The 1920s were the Jazz Age, a period of escapism after the horrors of World War I. The younger generation, especially, turned their backs on the formality and dark, buttoned-up clothing of the previous century. On both sides of the Atlantic, life was now fun, one seemingly endless party. With Europe still recovering from the war and repaying debts, the United States took the lead in new technology. Mass manufacturing made consumer goods cheaper and more accessible. New fabrics seemed to be invented every week - rayon, known as “art silk,” nylon, and many more.
In 1929, the Wall Street stock market crash brought the age of reckless partying to an abrupt end. The 1930s began with a widespread economic depression and unemployment and ended with the world at war again. It was a sober period, albeit with welcome touches of glamour for some.
This text brings together some of the most popular styles and dominant trends of the 1920s and 1930s and demonstrates how to achieve the look - from free-spirited flapper to Clark Gable look-alike. Some period pieces can still be found in thrift shops and secondhand sales. Others can be tracked down via the Internet, where auction sites often have vintage pieces selling for low prices. Other items you can make quite simply. Since the 1970s, there have been several revivals of elements of 1920s and 1930s fashions, and these more modern pieces make acceptable substitutes.

Costume and Fashion Source Books - Deirdre Clancy Steer - The 1980s and 1990s (2009).jpg

On January 20, 1981, the presidential candidate for the Republican Party, former movie actor Ronald Reagan, was sworn in as the fortieth president of the United States. Under Reagan, the country underwent a political and economic revolution characterized by deregulation (the lessening of government controls over the banking and industrial sectors) and large tax cuts. This political mood corresponded exactly to that of the then prime minister of Britain, Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher.
It may seem strange to preface a book on costume with a discussion about politics, but the way people dress is deeply influenced by the political climate in which they live. While liberal governments tend to inspire more adventurous, artistic styles of clothing, conservative governments, with their emphasis on the pre-eminence of the private sector, often produce fashions that reflect a sober, businesslike conformity.
This book examines the main costume and fashion trends in the United States and Europe during the 1980s and 1990s by drawing on the styles promoted by fashion designers and store catalogs and featured in movies and television programs of the time. It examines the world of couture - evident in fashion magazines such as Vogue and social picture magazines such as People - and, at the other end of the spectrum, the “street,” where young people reflected popular culture by dressing in styles they created themselves. Theater and fashion students, re-enactors, and those interested in amateur dramatics will find inspiration here - whether costuming a group of 1980s “power dressers” or a 1990s “grunge” band.

Eric P. Kaufmann - The Rise and Fall of Anglo-Amer ica (2004).jpg

As the 2000 census resoundingly demonstrated, the Anglo-Protestant ethnic core of the United States has all but dissolved. In a country founded and settled by their ancestors, British Protestants now make up less than a fifth of the population. This demographic shift has spawned a "culture war" within white America. While liberals seek to diversify society toward a cosmopolitan endpoint, some conservatives strive to maintain an American ethno-national identity. Eric Kaufmann traces the roots of this culture war from the rise of WASP America after the Revolution to its fall in the 1960s, when social institutions finally began to reflect the nation's ethnic composition.
Kaufmann begins his account shortly after independence, when white Protestants with an Anglo-Saxon myth of descent established themselves as the dominant American ethnic group. But from the late 1890s to the 1930s, liberal and cosmopolitan ideological currents within white Anglo-Saxon Protestant America mounted a powerful challenge to WASP hegemony. This struggle against ethnic dominance was mounted not by subaltern immigrant groups but by Anglo-Saxon reformers, notably Jane Addams and John Dewey. It gathered social force by the 1920s, struggling against WASP dominance and achieving institutional breakthrough in the late 1960s, when America truly began to integrate ethnic minorities into mainstream culture.
