In the 1970s, while politicians and activists outside prisons debated the proper response to crime, incarcerated people helped shape those debates though a broad range of remarkable political and literary writings.
Lee Bernstein explores the forces that sparked a dramatic "prison art renaissance," shedding light on how incarcerated people produced powerful works of writing, performance, and visual art. These included everything from George Jackson's revolutionary Soledad Brother to Miguel Piñero's acclaimed off-Broadway play and Hollywood film Short Eyes. An extraordinary range of prison programs--fine arts, theater, secondary education, and prisoner-run programs--allowed the voices of prisoners to influence the Black Arts Movement, the Nuyorican writers, "New Journalism," and political theater, among the most important aesthetic contributions of the decade.
By the 1980s and '90s, prisoners' educational and artistic programs were scaled back or eliminated as the "war on crime" escalated. But by then these prisoners' words had crossed over the wall, helping many Americans to rethink the meaning of the walls themselves and, ultimately, the meaning of the society that produced them.

Allan Maca, Jonathan Reyman, William Folan - Proph et, Pariah, and Pioneer, Walter W. Taylor and Diss ension in American Archaeology (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - Allan Maca, Jonathan Reyman, William Folan - Prophet,...W. Taylor and Dissension in American Archaeology 2010.jpg

In his 1948 work "A Study of Archaeology", recently minted Harvard Ph.D. Walter W Taylor delivered the strongest and most substantial critique of American archaeology ever published. He created many enemies with his dissection of the research programs of America's leading scholars, who took it as a personal affront. Taylor subsequently saw his ideas co-opted, his research pushed to the margins, and his students punished. Publicly humiliated at the 1985 Society for American Archaeology meeting, he suffered ridicule until his death in 1997. Nearly everyone in the archaeological community read Taylor's book at the time, and despite the negative reaction, many were influenced by it. Few young scholars dared to directly engage and build on his 'conjunctive approach', yet his suggested methods nevertheless began to be adopted and countless present-day authors highlight his impact on the 1960s formation of the 'New Archaeology'. In "Prophet, Pariah, and Pioneer", peers, colleagues, and former students offer a critical consideration of Taylor's influence and legacy. Neither a festschrift nor a mere analysis of his work, the book presents an array of voices exploring Taylor and his influence, sociologically and intellectually, as well as the culture of American archaeology in the second half of the twentieth century.

Donald E. Wolf - Crossing The Hudson, Historic Bri dges and Tunnels of the River (2010).jpg

Fog, tide, ice, and human error--before the American Revolution those who ventured to cross the vast Hudson Valley waterway did so on ferryboats powered by humans, animals, and even fierce winds. Before that war, not a single Hudson River bridge or tunnel had been built. It wasn't until Americans looked to the land in the fight for independence that the importance of crossing the river efficiently became a subject of serious interest, especially militarily. Later, the needs of a new transportation system became critical--when steam railroads first rolled along there was no practical way to get them across the water without bridges.
Crossing the Hudson continues this story soon after the end of the war, in 1805, when the first bridge was completed. Donald E. Wolf simultaneously tracks the founding of the towns and villages along the water's edge and the development of technologies such as steam and internal combustion that demanded new ways to cross the river. As a result, innovative engineering was created to pre for these resources.
From hybrid, timber arch, and truss bridges on stone piers to long-span suspension and cantilevered bridges, railroad tunnels, and improvements in iron and steel technology, the construction feats that cross the Hudson represent technical elegance and physical beauty. Crossing the Hudson reveals their often multileveled stories--a history of where, why, when, and how these structures were built; the social, political, and commercial forces that influenced decisions to erect them; the personalities of the planners and builders; the unique connection between a builder and his bridge; and the design and construction techniques that turned mythical goals into structures of utility and beauty.

Dana Allin, Steven Simon - The Sixth Crisis, Iran, Israel, America, and the Rumors of War (2010).jpg

There have been five central crises in America's post World War II encounter with the Middle East, and the Obama administration now faces a sixth. Iran's progress toward a nuclear weapons capability, and the prospect of Israel launching air strikes to stop it, are ingredients for a conflict that could ruin any residual hopes for fostering peace in the region.
The Sixth Crisis explores the fraught linkages between the Iranian nuclear challenge, the increasing likelihood of an Israeli preventive strike, the continuing Israel-Palestine tragedy, and President Barack Obama's efforts to recast America's relations with the world's Muslims. It is the first full account of the situation since Obama took office. The authors, a former senior official on President Clinton's National Security Council Staff and a leading authority on international politics, lay out in clear and accessible detail the technical and political dimensions of Iran's nuclear program, and the ongoing diplomacy to stop it. They show how Israel's panic about Iran's nuclear threat--combined with its policy toward the Palestinians--is undermining Jerusalem's alliance with America. Tehran, meanwhile, is exploiting tensions between Arab regimes fearful of a nuclear Iran and an Arab public that is both angry about the plight of the Palestinians and resentful of Israel's nuclear monopoly in the region. The Sixth Crisis iantly illuminates this fateful juncture. The status quo is on an incline to disaster, and the hopes that President Obama has inspired are threatened by the toxic mixture of Israeli-Palestinian stalemate and Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The time bomb of Iran's defiance and Israel's panic has the potential to spark a firestorm that would imperil US interests in the Middle East and engulf Obama's presidency. With the outcome of this unfolding crisis far from certain, The Sixth Crisis is required reading not only for policymakers, but also for anyone interested in world politics.

USA Books1 - Joe Mathews, Mark Paul - California Crackup, How Refo...orm Broke the Golden State and How We Can Fix It 2010.jpg

Is California beyond repair? A sizable number of Golden State citizens have concluded that it is. Incessant budget crises plus a government paralyzed by partisan gridlock have led to demands for reform, even a constitutional convention. But what, exactly, is wrong and how can we fix it? In California Crackup, Joe Mathews and Mark Paul provide clear and informed answers. Their fast-paced and often humorous narrative deftly exposes the constitutional origins of our current political and economic problems and furnishes a uniquely California fix: innovative solutions that allow Californians to debate their choices, settle on the best ones, hold elected officials accountable for results, and choose anew if something doesn't work.

Stephen G. Hannaford - Market Domination!, The Imp act of Industry Consolidation on Competition, Inno vation, and Consumer Choice (2007).jpg

USA Books1 - Stephen G. Hannaford - Market Domination, The Impact ... on Competition, Innovation, and Consumer Choice 2007.jpg

An oligopoly (from the Greek, few sellers) is a market that is dominated by a few large and powerful players. As Steve Hannaford documents with numerous examples, virtually every industry today—from medical equipment to airlines, toy retailing to oil—is trending in this direction, in the greatest movement toward industry consolidation since the turn of the 20th century. Charting the course of this trend around the world, Hannaford examines the motivations behind consolidation resulting from mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, and alliances; how companies exert political pressure to their advantage; and how the actions of the most dominant players—such as Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Viacom, Dell, ExxonMobil, Citigroup, and others—affect the choices we make at the supermarket, the drugs we are prescribed, and the movies we watch.

Everyone who reads the newspapers is aware of the dizzying pace of mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, and alliances, between big companies and small companies in every industry. Such deals, along with the growing social and political clout of the biggest companies, are critical issues for the economy and for our future as consumers.

Charting the course of this trend around the world, Hannaford examines the motivations behind consolidation into corporate empires, how companies exert political pressure to their advantage, and how the actions of the most dominant players, such as Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Viacom, Dell, ExxonMobil, Citigroup, and others, affect the choices we have at the supermarket, the drugs we are prescribed, and the movies we watch. Considering the implications of industry concentration on competition, technological innovation, business management, strategy, consumer behavior, and politics, Hannaford paints a provocative, but ultimately balanced, picture of big business and its impact on society.

Bruce E. Johansen, Barry M. Pritzker - Encyclopedi a of American Indian History (4 volume) (2008).jpg

This new four-volume encyclopedia is the most comprehensive and up-to-date resource available on the history of Native Americans, providing a lively, authoritative survey ranging from human origins to present-day controversies. The story of America's original inhabitants, their descendents, and the settlers who came after is one of cooperation and conflict, promise and compromise, tragedy and endurance. It is an essential, troubling undercurrent of America's evolution running the length of the nation's history and the breadth of the continent (the names of over 1/2 of the states in the U.S. have Native American origins). And from continuing debates over the origins of Native Americans to recent issues such as reparations, the provenance of artifacts, and sports team mascots, it is a story that continues to be written. From the origins of Native American cultures, through the years of colonialism and expansion, to the present, "Encyclopedia of American Indian History" brings the story of Native Americans to life like no other previous reference on the subject.

Featuring the work of many of the field's foremost scholars, it explores this fundamental aspect of the American experience with extraordinary depth, breadth, and currency, carefully balancing the perspectives of both Native and non-Native Americans. "The Encyclopedia of American Indian History" spans the centuries with three thematically organized volumes (covering the period from precontact through European colonization; the years of American expansion and Indian removal; and the modern era of reservations, reforms, and sovereignty). Each volume includes entries on key events, places, people, and issues. The fourth volume is an alphabetically organized resource providing histories of Native American nations, as well as an extensive chronology, topic finder, bibliography, and glossary. For students, historians, or anyone interested in the Native American experience, "Encyclopedia of American Indian History" brings that experience to life in an unprecedented way.

Jeff T. Hay - Greenhaven Encyclopedia of The Vietn am War (2004).jpg

Grade 9 Up-Alphabetical entries provide easy access to information on numerous topics including major battles and missions; significant persons such as generals, antiwar activists, leaders, and ambassadors; policies and initiatives; weapons; incidents; and more. Most articles range from a paragraph to a page but a number of topics are examined in longer entries (e.g., "Ho Chi Minh," "Battle of Hue," "Richard Nixon," etc.). Cross-references guide readers to related topics, helping to place the war within its larger historical and global context. Headings for articles are in bold type and there are guide words at the top of each page. Type size is generous. Average-quality, captioned black-and-white photos and maps throughout the book add interest and enhance understanding. An appended chronology begins with the year 1887 when France formed the Indochinese Union and ends with 1993 when the U.S. resumed formal diplomatic relations with Vietnam. A four-page annotated list for further reading includes both print and Web resources. Finally, there is a comprehensive index to further ease access to information. Spencer Tucker's three-volume Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War (ABC-CLIO, 1998) includes more and longer entries with references at the end of each article. However, libraries will find the easy-to-use Greenhaven title a satisfactory alternative.

Stanley Sandler - World War II in the Pacific, An Encyclopedia (2001).jpg

Busy reference librarians know there is a renewed interest in World War II history these days. Even our popular culture is paying attention to the generation who came of age between the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, and Japan's formal surrender aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. Therefore, it is fitting to view this source, part of the publisher's Military History of the United States Series, as both historical and contemporary in nature--historical because it deals with our past and contemporary because it presents a subject that has freshly grabbed our national attention.

In his thought-provoking introduction, Sandler, who also edited Garland's The Korean War: An Encyclopedia (1995), makes the case that the war in the Pacific cannot be understood without examining the unique and often conflicting cultural perspectives brought to the conflict by the Americans and Japanese. He explains, for example, how Japanese military behavior was influenced heavily by adherence to the medieval code of Bushido. Likewise, he discusses the American military's use of weaponry such as napalm flamethrowers in terms of its members' racial attitude toward Asians. His overall aim is to provide comprehensive coverage of events in the Pacific from the late 1930s to the Japanese surrender. Included are articles on military campaigns, weaponry, diplomacy, politics, and the social effects of the war. The role of major figures in the war is discussed throughout the volume, but this is not primarily a biographical source.

A major strength of the encyclopedia is that the articles are not limited to battles, generals, and places. These are adequately covered (e.g., Burma Road; Coral Sea, Battle of; LeMay, Curtis; MacArthur, Douglas; Palau), but along with them we are presented with articles on topics as disparate as African American troops; Film treatment of the Pacific War; Journalistic coverage of the Pacific War; Psychological warfare; and Stereotypes, Japanese and American.

Entries end with further readings and see also references. The publishers omitted several features that are standard with this type of reference work. There is no general bibliography. The list of contributors gives names only, with no identifying information (e.g., professional affiliation, job title), which does not help the reader gauge the credibility of the work. Also omitted is a comprehensive listing of entries, either alphabetical or by theme. Fortunately, there is an exhaustive 40-page index, and this provides easy quick reference to information in the articles. The text is not supplemented by illustrations, but a separate section of several dozen black-and-white captioned photos has been inserted.

Two other recent reference titles focus on the Pacific theater: The Pacific War Encyclopedia (Facts On File, 1998) and the third volume of The New Grolier Encyclopedia of World War II (1995). World War II in the Pacific is more scholarly and will provide academic and larger public libraries with solid reference coverage of the war. RBB

Tony Wagner - The Global Achievement Gap, Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Ski lls Our Children Need--And What We Can Do About It (2008).jpg

USA Books1 - Tony Wagner - The Global Achievement Gap, Why Even Our...s Our Children Need--And What We Can Do About It 2008.jpg

Despite the best efforts of educators, our nation’s schools are dangerously obsolete. Instead of teaching students to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers, we are asking them to memorize facts for multiple choice tests. This problem isn’t limited to low-income school districts: even our top schools aren’t teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy. Our teens leave school equipped to work only in the kinds of jobs that are fast disappearing from the American economy. Meanwhile, young adults in India and China are competing with our students for the most sought-after careers around the world.
Education expert Tony Wagner has conducted scores of interviews with business leaders and observed hundreds of classes in some of the nation’s most highly regarded public schools. He discovered a profound disconnect between what potential employers are looking for in young people today (critical thinking skills, creativity, and effective communication) and what our schools are providing (passive learning environments and uninspired lesson plans that focus on test preparation and reward memorization).

He explains how every American can work to overhaul our education system, and he shows us examples of dramatically different schools that teach all students new skills. In addition, through interviews with college graduates and people who work with them, Wagner discovers how teachers, parents, and employers can motivate the “net” generation to excellence.

An education manifesto for the twenty-first century, The Global Achievement Gap is provocative and inspiring. It is essential reading for parents, educators, business leaders, policy-makers, and anyone interested in seeing our young people succeed as employees and citizens.

USA Books1 - Gary R. Edgerton, Peter C. Rollins - Television Histor...ries, Shaping Collective Memory in the Media Age 2001.jpg

From Ken Burns's documentaries to historical dramas such as Roots, from A&E's Biography series to CNN's coverage of such events as the fall of the Berlin Wall, television has become the primary source for historical information for tens of millions of Americans today. Why has television become such a respected authority? What falsehoods enter our collective memory as truths? How is one to know what is real and what is imagined - or ignored - by producers, directors, or writers? Gary Edgerton and Peter Rollins have collected a group of essays that answer these and many other questions. The contributors examine the full spectrum of historical genres, as well as institutions such as the History Channel and production histories of such series as The Jack Benny Show, which ran for fifteen years. The authors explore the tensions between popular history and professional history and the tendency of some academics to declare the past "off limits" to nonscholars. Several of them point to the tendency for television histories to embed current concerns and priorities within the past, as in such popular shows as Quantum Leap and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The result is an insightful portrayal of the power television possesses to influence our culture.

Raymond Knapp - The American Musical and the Perfo rmance of Personal Identity (2009).jpg

Brainy [and] meticulous. . . . The bedrock idea in The American Musical and the Performance of Personal Identity is that the self is, on some level, a performance--and isn't a performance incomplete when there's no audience? Other people provide the receptivity and feedback that allow one to become a certain person, rather than another. Character is--to revert to that inspiring buzzword--collaboration. -- Celia Wren, American Theatre

The American Musical and the Performance of Personal Identity is an insightful contribution to current scholarship on musical theatre. It integrates theoretical approaches based in both musicology and audience reception, and applies these approaches across the media of film and theatre. In so doing, it offers a transferable, revealing methodology for similarly sophisticated analyses of the role of musical theatre in American culture. -- Diana Calderazzo, Theatre Journal
