Elisabeth Crawford - Nationalism and International ism in Science, 1880-1939, Four Studies of the Nob el Population (1992).jpg

All History - Elisabeth Crawford - Nationalism and Internationalism...1880-1939, Four Studies of the Nobel Population 1992.jpg

Elisabeth Crawford's new study departs from the commonly held notion that universalism and internationalism are inherent features of science. Showing how the rise of scientific organizations around the turn of the century had centered on national scientific enterprises, Dr. Crawford argues that scientific activities of the late-nineteenth century were an integral part of the emergence of the nation-state in Europe. Internationalism in science, both in theory and practice, began to hold sway over scientists only when economic relations, transportation and communication facilities began to transgress national boundaries. The founding of the Nobel Prize in 1901 confirmed the internationalization of science. The workings of the Nobel institution rested on an international community of scientists who forwarded candidates for the prizes. Along with the candidates and eventual prizewinners, they constituted the Nobel population, which in the fields of chemistry and physics between 1901 and 1939 numbered over one thousand scientists of greater and lesser renown from twenty-five countries. Dr. Crawford uses this Nobel population for biographical studies that shed new light on national and international science between 1901 and 1939. Her four studies examine critically the following problems: the upsurge of nationalism among scientists of warring nations during and after World War I and its consequences for internationalism in science; the existence of a scientific center and periphery in Central Europe; the elite conception of science in the United States and its role in the success of the national scientific enterprise; and the effective use of the Nobel prizes in an organization whose primary purpose was to further national science. Two introductions provide the necessary background for the studies by discussing research methodology and both national and international science between 1880 and 1914.

Jane Goodall - Performance and Evolution in the Ag e of Darwin, Out of the Natural Order (2002).jpg

Performance and Evolution in the Age of Darwin reveals the ways in which the major themes of evolution wre taken up in the performing arts during Darwin's adult lifetime and in the generation after his death. The period 1830-1900 was the formative period for evolutionary ideas. While scientists and theorists investigated the law and order of nature, show business was more concerned with what was out of the natural order. Missing links and throwbacks, freak taxonomies and exotic races were favorite subject matter for the burgeoning variety theatre movement. Focusing on popular theatre forms in London, New York and Paris, Jane Goodall shows how they were interwoven with the developing debate about human evolution. With this book, Goodall contributes an important new angle to the debates surrounding the history of evolution. She reveals that, far from creating widespread culture shock, Darwinian theory tapped into some of the long-standing themes of popular performance and was a source for diverse and sometimes hilarious explorations.

Manfred Malzahn - Germany 1945-1949, A Sourcebook (1991).jpg

The recent reunification of Germany has given rise to heated debate, inspiring new hopes and renewing old fears. But how many understand the critical post-war events which set the stage for today's events? Germany 1945-49: A Sourcebook examines the crucial post-war period when, as today, the German people were ready to break with the past and reassess what it means to be German. Malzahn uses numerous documents from the immediate post-war years to elucidate the political and social currents of the time and to illustrate how the Nazi state was dismantled and refashioned into two separate countries. The documents, many of which were previously unavailable in English, reflect life at all levels from politics to fashion, presenting the viewpoints of both the Allied forces and the Germans. Unprecedented in English, this comprehensively annotated and illustrated work shows the complex reality of post-war Germany, bringing that critical period alive once again.

Gregory Fremont-Barnes - The Encyclopedia of the F rench Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, A Politic al, Social, and Military History (2006).jpg

All History - Gregory Fremont-Barnes - The Encyclopedia of the Fren... Wars, A Political, Social, and Military History 2006.jpg

The focus of this set is the years from 1792 to 1815, and as the subtitle implies, it covers the far-reaching effects and consequences of the Napoleonic era. There are more than 800 alphabetically arranged entries focusing on prominent figures, noteworthy battles, and political and social change. A detailed chronology begins the set, starting with the death of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II and ending with the Second Treaty of Paris. Since military maneuvers are such an important part of the Napoleonic era, a helpful glossary of both military and naval terms is also included. Primary sources often conflict on the statistical information related to a given battle (soldiers involved, the killed and wounded, etc.), so entries rely on various sources from all over the world and in multiple languages. These sources are cited in the extensive further-reading lists placed at the end of each entry, after the generous list of see also references. A broad topic like Austrian army has 11 see also references and no less than 20 sources listed at its conclusion.
Ten "contextual essays," each approximately four to six pages in length, cover military operations, political ideology, literature, science, economy, and imperial expansion. Sixty-five helpful black-and-white maps are sprinkled throughout the volumes, some of them clearly delineating the expansion and contraction of the Napoleonic Empire. Most of the maps, however, are detailed depictions of battles, complete with terrain features, army formations, and troop placement and movement. Even important sea battles are not ignored, including ship movement and wind direction. Additional illustrations depict battles, while still others show important congresses, treaties, and personages.
A chronology and the glossaries of military and naval terms are repeated in each volume, as is the detailed index. Volume 3 contains a bibliography and 18 primary source documents.
Overall, this is a fantastic resource for anyone researching the period. It is straightforward and user-friendly enough to be helpful to the beginner, but the detail and extensive references will appeal to the more advanced and experienced researcher as well. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Rodney P. Carlisle - The Twenties (2008).jpg

Twentieth-century authors were profoundly influenced by changes in the way nations and states governed their citizens. The development of state administrative technologies allowed Western states to identify, track and regulate their populations in unprecedented ways. Patricia E. Chu argues that innovations of form and style developed by Anglo-American modernist writers chart anxieties about personal freedom in the face of increasing governmental controls. Chu examines a diverse set of texts and films, including works by T. S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield, Zora Neale Hurston and others, to explore how modernists perceived their work and their identities in relation to state power. Additionally, she sheds light on modernists' ideas about race, colonialism and the postcolonial, as race came increasingly to be seen as a political and governmental construct. This book offers a powerful critique of key themes for scholars of modernism, American literature and twentieth-century literature.

Antonio Calabria - The Cost of Empire, The Finance s of the Kingdom of Naples in the Time of Spanish Rule (1991).jpg

All History - Antonio Calabria - The Cost of Empire, The Finances o...he Kingdom of Naples in the Time of Spanish Rule 1991.jpg

This is a study of early modern government finance in the kingdom of Naples, one of the most important European dominions of the Spanish Empire. Professor Calabria focuses on the period from the mid-sixteenth century to the time of the Thirty Years' War. He connects fiscal developments to larger issues, such as the seventeenth-century crisis, the decline of Italy and Spain, and the economic and social significance of investments in government securities markets in early modern Europe. The Cost of Empire blends quantitative data on economic, fiscal, and financial affairs with non-quantitative material detailing attitudes, economic behaviour, and administrative practices. The quantitative material includes analyses of government budgets from 1550 to 1638 and a computer study of about 4,500 investors and their investments in state securities in the later sixteenth century. The work is unrivalled in the breadth, comprehensiveness, and sophistication of its analysis of an early modern fiscal system.

Mark Patton - Statements in Stone, Monuments and S ociety in Neolithic Europe (1993).jpg

Statements in Stone is the first detailed account of the megaliths, the great stone monuments of Western Europe. For centuries, the megaliths have excited the popular imagination and recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in megalithic studies, involving a shift away from traditional concerns with typology, chronology and "origins," towards an attempt to understand the social significance of megalithic monuments, as well as the cultural dimensions of monument construction and ritual. In any consideration of European megaliths, Britanny must be seen as a core area of study, distinguished by its density and diversity of monuments. This book places various megalithic traditions into a social context, relating them to changing structures in social organization. These megaliths cover a period of over 2000 years, from the Neolithic period to the beginning of the Bronze Age. Mark Patton shows how recent excavations have further contributed to our understanding of megaliths: the discovery of early complexes beneath passage graves for instance, have provided evidence for the multiphase construction of megalithic cairns and tombs. Statements in Stone is based on the most recent and controversial theoretical perspectives in archaeology and will be of great interest to students of this discipline, as well as those in the field of anthropology.

Stuart Woolf - Nationalism in Europe, 1850 to the Present (1995).jpg

Nationalism has become so integral a part of life in Europe today that it is virtually impossible not to identify oneself with a nation-state, and yet nationalism is historically a modern phenomenon. This reader of classic texts draws on authors spanning a broad chronological period and from a variety of European countries--including John Stuart Mill and Otto Bauer--to explore the theme of nationalism in Europe. This book provides texts long enough for comprehensive critical study and makes available the central building blocks for informed theoretical discussion. Contributors: Stuart Woolf, John Stuart Mill, Ernest Renan, Otto Bauer, Marcel Mauss, C. A. Macartney, Federico Chabod, John Breuilly, Joshua A. Fishman and Bruno Tobia.
