Michael Rice - The Archaeology of the Arabian Gulf (1994).jpg

The world's first great cities, built in the fertile lands of Mesopotamia, grew rich on trade. The great rivers which flowed down into the Gulf were navigable up to Babylon and beyond, into Syria. Ships carried goods from these cities to present-day Pakistan and probably to Egypt, thousands of miles away. But it is only in recent years that the extraordinary archaeological remains in the Gulf region have been revealed. The Archaeology of the Arabian Gulf provides the first comprehensive, accessible and up-to-date review of recent archaeological work in the area, which now comprises Kuwait, eastern Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Emirates and northern Oman. Through a detailed examination of the Gulf's archaeology Michael Rice reveals the extraordinary nature of the region's past. He shows that the Gulf has been a major channel of commerce for millenia, a tradition which continues to the present. No similarly wide-ranging book is currently available which deals with the antiquity of this area. It will be of great interest to the general reader who seeks to read of the past of the last unknown region of the ancient world.

Osprey - Elite 32 - Ian Knight - British Forces in Zululand 1879 (1990).jpg

On 4 March, 1878 at King William's Town, British Kaffraria, Gen. Sir Arthur Cunnynghame handed over supreme command of the British forces in southern Africa to his successor, Lt. Gen. Sir Frederic Thesiger. The High Commissioner, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, was convinced that one solution to the complex problems which beset the region was to overthrow the last powerful independent black kingdom bordering British possessions – the Zulu kingdom of King Cetshwayo KaMapande. However Cetshwayo had remained on the political defensive. This book descirbes the uniforms and equipment of the forces that Thesiger led across the border to wage war in Zululand.

Janet M. Theiss - Disgraceful Matters, The Politic s of Chastity in Eighteenth-Century China (2005).jpg

Looking beyond the familiar trappings of the cult of female chastity--such as hagiographies of widows and chastity shrines--in late imperial China, this book explores the cult's political significance and practical ramifications in everyday life during the eighteenth century. In the first full-length study of the subject, Janet Theiss examines a vast number of laws, legal cases, regulations, and policies to illustrate the social and political processes through which female virtue was defined, enforced, and contested. Along the way, she provides rich details of social life and cultural practices among ordinary Chinese people through narratives of criminal cases of sexual assault, harassment, adultery, and domestic violence.

Robert G. Moeller - War Stories, The Search for a Usable Past in the Federal Republic (1999).jpg

Robert G. Moeller powerfully conveys the complicated story of how West Germans recast the recent past after the Second World War. He rejects earlier characterizations of a postwar West Germany dominated by attitudes of "forgetting" or silence about the Nazi past. He instead demonstrates the "selective remembering" that took place among West Germans during the postwar years: in particular, they remembered crimes committed against Germans, crimes that--according to some contemporary accounts--were comparable to the crimes of Germans against Jews. Moeller draws on a wide range of U.S. and German government documents, political debates, film archives, letters, oral histories, and newspaper accounts.

Martin Blinkhorn, Ralph Gibson - Landownership and Power in Modern Europe (1991).jpg

In Landownership and Power in Modern Europe, a distinguished international team of twelve historians offers a fascinating --and unprecedented--comparative analysis of the relationship, in nineteenth and twentieth-century Europe, between the possession of land and the exercise of power in all its forms. The contributors, all experienced researchers in the area of rural/agrarian history, examine the workings of this relationship in several regions of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland. In considering their respective regions, the authors address such specific issues as the distribution of landownership and the wealth derived from it; patterns of agricultural exploitation (for example tenancy, sharecropping and direct labour); oppression, deference, patronage and clientelism in landowner-peasant relations; ideology and hegemony; landowners and the state; and the response of landowners to challenge from below.

Hans J. van de Ven - War and Nationalism in China, 1925-1945 (2003).jpg

In 1937, the Nationalists under Chiang Kaishek were leading the Chinese war effort against Japan and were lauded in the West for their efforts to transform China into an independent and modern nation; yet this image was quickly tarnished. The Nationalists were soon denounced as militarily incompetent, corrupt, and antidemocratic and Chiang Kaishek, the same.
In this book, van de Ven investigates the myths and truths of Nationalist resistance including issues such as:
* The role of the US in East Asia during the Second World War
* The achievements of Chiang Kaishek as Nationalist leader
* The respective contributions of the Nationalists and the Communists to the defeat of Japan
* The consequences of the Europe First strategy for Asia
War and Nationalism in China offers a major new interpretation of the Chinese Nationalists, placing their war of resistance against Japan in the context of their prolonged efforts to establish control over their own country and providing a critical reassessment of Allied Warfare in the region. This groundbreaking volume will interest students and researchers of Chinese History and Warfare.

C. Esdaile - French Wars 1792-1815 (2001).jpg

The French Wars, 1792-1875 is a highly original, critical introduction to the revolutionary and Neopleonic conflicts. It illuminates the less well-known areas of the subject, such as the changing attitude of the French people towards Napoleon, as well as providing a balanced account of the campaigns of Wellington and Napoleon.
Based on current historiography, this book discusses the expansion of France, the extent to which Napoleon was responsible for this success, and the events leading up to his subsequent exile. It also provides a clear examination of each of the coalitions which fought against France.

David Hinton - Archaeology, Economy and Society, E ngland From the Fifth to the Fifteenth Century (20 05).jpg

Many books have been written on particular aspects of medieval archaeology, or on particular parts of the period, but synthesis across the whole spectrum has not been attempted before. The aim of this book is to examine the contribution that archaeology can make to an understanding of the social, economic, religious and other developments that took place in England from the migrations of the fifth and sixth centuries to the beginning of the Renaissance, showing how society and economy evolved in that time-span. Drawing on the latest available material, the book takes a chronological approach to the archaeological material of the post-Roman period in order to emphasize the changes that can be observed in the physical evidence and some of the reasons for them that can be suggested. The environment in which people functioned and how they expressed themselves - for example in their houses and burial practices, their pottery and their clothes - show how they were constrained by social customs and economic pressures.

All History - Jenny Davidson - Hypocrisy and the Politics of Polite...iteness, Manners and Morals from Locke to Austen 2004.jpg

Jenny Davidson demonstrates how the arguments that define hypocrisy as a moral and political virtue thrived in eighteenth-century Britain's culture of politeness. However, Davidson also concludes that eighteenth-century writers from Locke to Austen believed that the public practice of vice was far more dangerous for society than discrepancies between what people say and what they do in private.

Vincent Barletta - Death in Babylon, Alexander the Great and Iberian Empire in the Muslim Orient (20 10).jpg

Though Alexander the Great lived more than seventeen centuries before the onset of Iberian expansion into Muslim Africa and Asia, he loomed large in the literature of late medieval and early modern Portugal and Spain. Exploring little-studied chronicles, chivalric romances, novels, travelogues, and crypto-Muslim texts, Vincent Barletta shows that the story of Alexander not only sowed the seeds of Iberian empire but foreshadowed the decline of Portuguese and Spanish influence in the centuries to come.
Death in Babylon depicts Alexander as a complex symbol of Western domination, immortality, dissolution, heroism, villainy, and death. But Barletta also shows that texts ostensibly celebrating the conqueror were haunted by failure. Examining literary and historical works in Aljamiado, Castilian, Catalan, Greek, Latin, and Portuguese, Death in Babylon develops a view of empire and modernity informed by the ethical metaphysics of French phenomenologist Emmanuel Levinas. A novel contribution to the literature of empire building, Death in Babylon provides a frame for the deep mortal anxiety that has infused and given shape to the spread of imperial Europe from its very beginning.

John Guy - The Reign of Elizabeth I, Court and Cul ture in the Last Decade (1996).jpg

This book is about the politics and political culture of the "last decade" of the reign of Elizabeth I, in effect the years 1585 to 1603. It takes a critical and provocative look at the declining Virgin Queen. Many teachers and their students have failed to consider the "last decade" in its own right, or have ignored it, having begun their accounts in 1558 and struggled on to the defeat of the Armada in 1588. Only two major political surveys have been attempted since 1926. Neither allots adequate space to Crown patronage, Puritanism and religion, society and the economy, political thought, and literature and drama. This book will be indispensable to a fuller understanding of the age.

All History - Richard Newhauser - The Early History of Greed, The S...varice in Early Medieval Thought and Literature 2000.jpg

In this full-length study of the early history of greed Richard Newhauser challenges the traditional view that avarice only became a dominant sin with the rise of a money economy. He shows that avaritia, the sin of greed for possessions, was dominant in a wide range of theological and literary texts from the first century CE, and that by the early Middle Ages avarice headed the list of vices for authors aiming to convert others from pagan materialism to Christian spirituality.

Eric Carlton - Occupation, The Policies and Practi ces of Military Conquerors (1995).jpg

In Occupation, Eric Carlton explores the methods employed by dominant powers to ensure their supremacy and considers the critical relationship between military authority and civilian population. In exploring this complex relationship, Carlton covers both the nature of control and its practical implementation. Working from the premise that the ideology of the occupying power conditions the exercise of power and that control is gained either by compulsion or persuasion, he examines the options available to the aggressor nation in maintaining authority. These, he suggests, include both the use of force and the implementation of forms of social control - legal, moral and religious precepts - as well as the utilisation of the social norms of the occupied nation. In order to demonstrate the wide variety of control policies used Dr. Carlton presents a spectrum of case studies, with examples ranging from the Roman Empire to British colonialism in India and the exploitation of Peru by the Spanish. Particular attention is given to the Nazi atrocities of the Second World War, and to the moral aspects of military repression. In the light of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which is discussed in a postscript, the relevance of an increased understanding of the nature of occupation is plain.

Lynn Abrams - Workers' Culture in Imperial Germany (1992).jpg

This book represents the first alternative approach to the study of workers' culture in Imperial Germany while at the same time providing the first comprehensive historical analysis of the emergence of Germany.s modern leisure industry. The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed Germany's transformation into a major industrial economy. The central concern of this book is the emergence of a distinct worker's culture which provided a disparate and heterogeneous working class with a focus of identity in an alien and hostile society. Focusing on the aspect of that culture--the leisure activities enjoyed by workers during their infrequent leisure time--and on two major cities, Bochum and Dusseldorf, this study traverses the gamut of popular amusements and recreations on offer from the popular festivals of the early industrial years, the pubs, Tingel-Tangles and dance-halls, the clubs and rational recreations, to the mass, commercial culture epitomized by the cinema shortly after the turn of the century.

All History - Sherman Cochran - Encountering Chinese Networks, West...se, and Chinese Corporations in China, 1880-1937 2000.jpg

Big businesses have faced a persistent dilemma in China since the nineteenth century: how to retain control over corporate hierarchies while adapting to local social networks. Sherman Cochran, in the first study to compare Western, Japanese, and Chinese businesses in Chinese history, shows how various businesses have struggled with this issue as they have adjusted to dramatic changes in Chinese society, politics, and foreign affairs. Cochran devotes a chapter each to six of the biggest business ventures in China before the Communist revolution: two Western-owned companies, Standard Oil and British-American Tobacco Company; two Japanese-owned companies, Mitsui Trading Company and Naigai Cotton Company; and two Chinese-owned firms, Shenxin Cotton Mills and China Match Company. In each case, he notes the businesses' efforts to introduce corporate hierarchies for managing the distribution of goods and the organization of factory workers, and he describes their encounters with a variety of Chinese social networks: tenacious factions of English-speaking compradors and powerful trade associations of non-English-speaking merchants channeling goods into the marketplace; and small cliques of independent labor bosses and big gangs of underworld figures controlling workers in the factories.

Gyan Pandey - Remembering Partition, Violence, Nat ionalism and History in India (2002).jpg

Gyan Pandey's latest book is a compelling examination of the violence that marked the partition of India in 1947, and how the preceding events have been documented. In the process, the author provides a critique of history-writing and nationalist myth-making. He also investigates how local forms of community are established by the way in which violent events are remembered and written about. The book will be of interest to historians of South Asia, to sociologists and to anyone concerned with the Indian subaltern story.
